Arterberry Maresh and Tan Fruit

As the third-generation in his family to make wine, Jim crafts Grand Cru-level Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Arterberry Maresh’s prized position in the Dundee Hills. His releases are praised by critics and consumers alike. These are benchmark wines for the region that somehow capture Jim’s easy-going yet seriously-smart-under-the-skin personality.

That dualistic charm is doubled in his experimental side project dubbed ‘Tan Fruit’. Now, you could assume that these side-project wines are mere throwaway gags, but leave it to Jim to release top-scoring and boldly visionary Chardonnay.

The Head of the Cathedral: Graacher Domprobst 10-19-25

Graacher Domprobst Vineyard looking down towards Bernkastel-Kues

German wine is often one of the final frontiers of knowledge and mastery for enthusiastic wine drinkers. The amount of world class vineyards is overwhelming and akin to what one experiences in trying to master the crus of Burgundy, on top of the fact that these vineyards have challenging names which are usually interwoven with the name of the village in which they reside. The styles of wine from each site can vary immensely based on terroir and the wine making practices of each producer (Kabinett vs Spatlese, dry vs off dry, etc.). Over the next few Sundays we’re going to tackle this complexity head on by featuring a sale on a few of the most famous vineyards in German wine.

Karlsmühle

Karlsmühle is nestled in the Ruwer, formerly known as Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. It is one of the most unique of the Mosel sub-regions and is tiny, making up only 2% of the Mosel’s vineyard land.

Steep slopes rich in slate soil surround the small feeder streams of the Ruwer, representing some of the finest vineyard land in the region. The Karlsmühle winery sits at the bend of this tiny river, across the main road from one of the most internationally famous wineries of the region, Maximin Grunhaus.

Across the river from the Karlsmühle estate lies a massive slope bedecked in fine vineyard land. This are Lorenzhöf’s vineyards, which includes a monopole of the estate.

Want to experience the old-school style of Mosel Riesling? Let’s back up a sec: What IS an old-school style of Mosel Riesling? Before the heat waves of the past few decades became just your average summer swelter, before bone-dry Riesling became the preferred style in Germany and beyond, before the go big or go home points-chasing of high-ripeness/-alcohol/-extract/-everything became the norm, there was: delicacy.

A light touch in the vineyard and a hands-off approach in the cellar let the vintages, cooler as they were, speak for themselves. Wines leaned light in body and alcohol, and sugar, for that matter.

Emrich-Schönleber Sale

Emrich-Schönleber

What better argument can be said for you to try the wines of Emrich-Schönleber than to say they inspired Stephan Bitterolf to become a wine importer? Naturally, you might wonder who this Bitterolf guy is and why you should care – that’s valid. He’s the man, myth, and legend behind Vom Boden, the importer best known for bringing Keller to the USA. (Keller being THE cult wine producer of Germany.)

Yet, despite Bitterolf’s best efforts and despite the estate’s fame inside Germany, Emrich-Schonleber flies under the radar in the USA. These are spectacular wines—every bit the equal of Dönnhoff, their main competition in the Nahe.

Father and son team Werner and Frank Schönleber work with awe-inspiring sites, the most prominent being Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen.
