Château des Jacques: Jadot in Beaujolais

Louis Jadot purchased their Moulin-à-Vent estate in 1996, becoming one of the first major Burgundy houses with significant holdings in the region. Their vineyards including holdings in some of the most famous Beaujolais crus of Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, and Fleurie. These vineyards are notable for their pink granite soils, unique to the region, on which Gamay excels.

Since taking over the estate, Maison Jadot has added organic and biodynamic practices, less with a mind towards certification than towards the health and character of each parcel.

The hand harvested grapes are rigorously sorted and destemmed before undergoing Burgundian winemaking techniques such as long macerations, natural fermentation, and barrel maturation. 2022 saw significantly smaller yields due to intense heat in July. The vines responded with smaller berries with intense concentration. The resulting wines are silky and deep, with excellent aging potential.

We’d say that these are surprisingly complex, but the secret is out about the quality of Beaujolais, especially from illustrious producers such as Jadot.

Winery Note
“This wine is a blend made from the great parcels owned within the appellation by the Chāteau des Jacques, namely Bel Air, Grille-Midi and Cercillon. They are located at an altitude above 300 m on a winding place. The pink granite varies from one vineyard parcel to another (depth and alteration), lending the wine complexity…With a beautiful deep cherry colour, red fruits flesh and flowers aromas, this Fleurie is rich, delicate and smooth. It is a very lush and voluptuous wine.”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 27 bottles in stock now

“The 2022 Moulin-à-Vent has a sapid, marine-tinged bouquet, hints of shucked oyster shell infusing the dark berry fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly furry tannins, spicier than the Morgon, with a little more edginess and pepperiness on the finish. Very fine. (Drink between 2024-2032).”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Morgon Cote du Py 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“An emblematic terroir composed of bluish rocks derived from an underwater volcano and whose origins are even more ancient than the pink granite of Moulin à Vent…The interesting aspect of Côte du PY originates from the blue rock which is richer than its neighbour planted on granite. It shows rich aromas of white pepper and blackberry together with full body. Its complexity will enhance a wide range of delicate dishes.”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent Clos du Grand Carquelin 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent Clos du Grand Carquelin 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Winery Note
“A few steps away from the windmill itself, and separated from the la Roche vineyard by a small road, the Clos du grand Carquelin faces a little bit more towards the south and offers a different personality. Here the soil is made of granitic sands and is deeper (60m) and more clayish…The Clos du Grand Carquelin is a particularly complex, delicate and elegant wine. It is appealing, lively and opens nicely once in a glass. This cru Beaujolais is a nice companion to delicately flavoured dishes.”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent La Roche 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“As ‘la Roche’ means, this vineyard is situated under the windmill (Moulin-A-Vent) on the mother rock old of 320 million years Only the Gamay grape is able to prosper on such soils almost without any water reserve throughout the year. Vinification: Picked and sorted by hand, then often de-stemmed, the grapes macerate slowly over the course of three to four weeks. Both pigeage and pumping over takes place during fermentation depending on the vintage. Winemaking and bottling: The wines are aged in our historic cellar for 10 months, a period spent in oak barrels, partly new and partly one, two and three vinages old.. The oak used to make the barrels comes from the French forests of Allier, Limousin and Nivernais. Tasting / Food pairing: La Roche is a wine of great tension, with lots of minerality and precision. It is very linear in style, a characteristic that makes it a particularly apt match for complex and refined dishes.”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent Clos des Thorins 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
Decanter 95 points
“Facing south, the 60-year-old vines at Clos des Thorins are located on deep granitic soils. 12 months maturation in oak post-fermentation. A fine Moulin-à-Vent with precision and focus on the palate. Violet notes, not over-sweet or heavy. Plenty of substance with floral character and black olive notes. Complex and beautifully constructed – a terroir driven wine.”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent Clos de Rochegres 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent Clos de Rochegres 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $106, that’s $100.70 at 5% off and $95.40 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 90 points
“The 2022 Moulin-à-Vent Clos de Rochegrès has more complexity on the nose compared to the regular cuvée: more floral, iris flower scents filtering through the dark berry fruit, and hints of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It’s fleshy, but right at the finish, it is a tad sweeter than I would like, lacking a bit of sapidity and tension. Near, yet not quite there! That said, it remains a decent Moulin-à-Vent that will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. (Drink between 2025-2033).”

“Discreet but not invisible wood influence sets off the markedly ripe yet still appealingly fresh aromas of black raspberry, dark cherry, spice and plenty of warm earth character. The succulent, dense and mouth coating big-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration while exhibiting excellent power and punch on the very firm but not really austere finale. This needs to add depth but I like the balance and vibrancy and this should amply repay extended cellaring.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 750ml Was $219, Now $189 special, 1 bottle in stock now

“This is presently quite firmly reduced so I would advise decanting it for 30 minutes or so first if you’re going to try and bottle young. Otherwise the medium weight, velvety and highly seductive flavors possess fine concentration thanks to the abundant sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a toasty and nicely complex finish that delivers sneaky good length. This acidulated bon bons effort should reward mid to even longer-term cellaring.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois La Combe Aux Moines, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2016 750ml Was $119, Now $99 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Burghound 91 points
“Outstanding. This too is very deeply hued. Liqueur-like and super-fresh aromas are composed by notes of red and dark currant, earth, violet and a hint of the sauvage. There is outstanding richness and volume to the caressing yet powerful middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent depth and persistence on the muscular, youthfully austere and moderately firm finish. This is a very good CAM and worth checking out.”

Burghound 90-92 points
“Here the wood treatment is quite toasty and cannot be described as subtle though it again stops short of completely overshadowing the otherwise cool and restrained liqueur-like aromas of dark berries and plenty of sauvage character. There is better density to the muscular and intense medium-bodied flavors that possess evident minerality on the toasty and youthfully austere finish. My sense is that the wood, while prominent today, will ultimately be successfully integrated though it may take a few years.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois Les Goulots, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2014 750ml Was $89, Now $79 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 89-92 points
“Here too there is a subtle touch of wood to the super-fresh array of various red berries, floral, earth and discreet sauvage wisps. There is a supple yet racy mouth feel to the relatively forward medium-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are notably fine and this adds to the sense of refinement on the stony, youthfully austere and solidly persistent finale. This is finer than the Gevrey villages but only slightly more complex.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois Les Goulots, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2017 750ml Was $99, Now $79 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Burghound 89-91 points
“The wood regimen is less subtle though it doesn’t dominate the black cherry, spice and earth-suffused aromas. Once again the mid-palate mouthfeel of the attractively vibrant medium weight flavors is quite supple, all wrapped in a lingering and delicious if not particularly dense finish. This is certainly pretty but not deep and is a wine that should drink well after only a few years.”
