Dönnhoff

Despite being one of the smallest growing regions in Germany, the Nahe is one of the most compelling. Combining the heft of the Rheingau with the elegance and minerality inherent in the Mosel, the region offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. That’s a lot of faith we hoist on the shoulders of this family, but anyone who knows the wines knows that it is well deserved.

Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers, and one we stock by the pallet-load. They excel with both dry and off-dry wines, producing some of the highest rated and most enthusiastically praised Rieslings in nearly every vintage.

Markus Molitor

There may be no more ambitious winemaker in the world than Markus Molitor. His determination and drive to make the best possible wines has made him a towering figure in the Mosel, with an impressive, modern winery and holdings in almost every important vineyard in the region.

This drive results in a wide variety of bottlings. Most winemakers would pick a vineyard once or twice and vinify the lots together—it’s easier and the wines are good. Molitor, though, asks what each parcel and pick would be like on its own—treated as if it were a wine of distinction rather than a blending component. The result is a dizzying number of bottlings that all strive toward perfection.

The Kingdom of Heaven: Graacher Himmelreich Sale

German wine is often one of the final frontiers of knowledge and mastery for enthusiastic wine drinkers. The amount of world class vineyards is overwhelming and akin to what one experiences in trying to master the crus of Burgundy, on top of the fact that these vineyards have challenging names which are usually interwoven with the name of the village in which they reside. The styles of wine from each site can vary immensely based on terroir and the wine making practices of each producer (Kabinett vs Spatlese, dry vs off dry, etc.). Over the next few Sundays we’re going to tackle this complexity head on by featuring a sale on a few of the most famous vineyards in German wine.

Bordeaux

The most esteemed of French wine regions, Bordeaux is home to age-worthy reds, luscious and unexpected whites, and some of the most famous desserts wines in the world.

Dry white wines are either single-varietal expressions of Sauvignon Blanc or Semillon, or are blends of the two, often with small additions of other aromatic grapes. Top releases age well, while entry-level picks are a refreshing and more neutral alternative to Sancerre or New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.

For reds, a major consideration is the appellation: those on the Right Bank tend to be Merlot-based with softer tannins and more approachable profile in their youth, but outstanding potential in the cellar. Appellations to know include Saint-Émilion (best known for its prestige and ageability) and Pomerol (the renege without a classification system that is nonetheless one of the most sought-after for its quality and exclusivity).
