In Barolo, an estate offering both high quality and affordable pricing is a rarity. One such estate is Paolo Scavino. With access to some of Barolo’s most prized vineyards and a winemaking team that embraces the best of both modern and traditional techniques, the Scavino wines are arguably the smartest buys in Barolo today.
Rich and powerful in their youth, the wines are built to age. Their true greatness develops after time in the cellar – something that can’t be said about all of Scavino’s modernist peers.
Today, his daughters, Elisa and Enrica, oversee the winery, ensuring its continued legacy of quality. They vinify each parcel separately and age the Barolos in large casks. Any grapes or wine that don’t meet their high standards are sold off in bulk, which can be up to 30% of their production in a given vintage.
The 2021s just landed and are worth thoughtful consideration. The Wine Advocate describes the 2021 vintage in Barolo as “extraordinary,” ranking it as on par with the notable 2016 vintage. If you’ve been waiting for a top vintage to invest, now is the time.
It would be difficult to find a Barolo producer that offers a better value: Paolo Scavino’s rigorous quality standards seem ludicrous when the costs are considered, especially during our three-day sale.

Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “Located in Roddi, the 2017 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is marked by perfume of chalky earth, violets, and kirsch. The palate moves into dark fruits, with ripe currant, sweet tobacco, and tannins that emerge on the finish. Hold for 2-4 years and drink 2024-2042. Helmed by fourth generation winemaker Elisa Scavino, the estate owns and manages 30 hectares spanning eight of the 11 communes of the Barolo region and is based in Castiglione Falletto. Since 2007, they have implemented the use of a netted, submerged cap cylindrical system developed by Elisa’s father, Enrico, which achieves a delicate extraction during fermentation. They have moved to slower, longer fermentation periods, and as of 2018 will only be utilizing large casks. In the vineyard, there is great attention to the compression of the soils, creating a healthy ecosystem rich in oxygen and microorganisms and a sustainable approach.”
Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points “This is more open than other single vineyard releases from Scavino with plum, raspberry and black cherry aromas with hints of honeysuckle. Some wet earth. Full-bodied with chewy tannins on the palate. Hints of citrus skin. Pure. Needs time to soften. “
Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2020 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is a complex, alluring wine. Dried herbs, menthol, licorice, sage, mocha and lavender play off a core of purplish/black fruit. Dark and sensual, but not at all heavy, the 2020 has a ton to offer in a plush, immediate style. This is a very sexy Barolo.”
Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points “This shows balsamic, sandalwood, rose petals and a touch of red fruit on the nose. The palate is tight, with precise chewy tannins, tight fruit and a compact finish. A solid, exceptional Barolo that will need about three years to soften.”

Paolo Scavino Bric del Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $94.50, that’s $89.78 at 5% off and $85.05 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Paolo Scavino Bric del Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points “The 2019 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is the hallmark wine of the estate, and it shows. Taking on more concentration, it is pure and generous with kirsch, star anise, nutmeg, and menthol and moves impressively to the palate with ease and nobility. It offers fantastic depth while remaining true to the vintage and propels forward through an arch of acidity, while having grounded notes of Earl Grey tea, black cherry, and crushed stones as well as ripe tannins. Drink 2026-2046.”
Paolo Scavino Bric del Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $115, that’s $109.25 at 5% off and $103.50 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Decanter 97 points “With holdings in Fiasco since 1910, the Scavino family considers this wine their flagbearer. First produced separately in 1978, it is crafted from three southwest-facing plots on a mix of sandstone and limestone. A profound, mineral-laden nose brings in supporting accents of pepper and raspberry. Elegant in weight yet commanding in delivery, enveloping tannins suggest some richness with an innate sense of balance prevailing. Coming together admirably, this is captivating and energetic through to the crushed stone and iron finish. (Drink between 2028-2043).”

Paolo Scavino Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $66, that’s $62.70 at 5% off and $59.40 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2017 Barolo Monvigliero is classy and polished right out of the gate. Sweet dark cherry, rose petal, mint and cinnamon are some of the nuances that open in the glass. Even with all of its immediacy, the 2017 has plenty of tannin. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years. The 2017 is undoubtedly an attractive wine, but its best days lie ahead.”
Paolo Scavino Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “Scavino’s 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is bright and aromatically effusive, as Barolos from this site tend to be, but on the palate, it is quite a bit more reserved – Dried fruit, tobacco, mint and worn-in leather linger. Ideally, I would like to see more Monvigliero sensuality here.”
Paolo Scavino Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points “This has aromas of tar, violets, cherries, orange rind and a touch of aniseed. Medium- to full-bodied with a firm tannin structure that seems to recede toward the finish. The fruit is juicy, tender, pretty and refined. It should be more evident once the tannins mellow out. Exciting. Better from 2030.”
Paolo Scavino Prapo, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2020 Barolo Prapò is another impressive wine from the Scavino family in this vintage. Dark and somber, with plenty of Serralunga tannin, the 2020 impresses with its superb balance and class. Dark fruit, iron, leather, menthol and espresso build as this dramatic, wonderfully resonant Barolo shows off its stylish personality. Elegance and power.”
Paolo Scavino Prapo, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $85, that’s $80.75 at 5% off and $76.50 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2021 Barolo Prapò is fabulous. It offers up an exotic mix of dark fruit, lavender, graphite, plum and scorched earth, with firm, muscular Serralunga tannins to back it all up. Readers will have to be patient with the 2021. It’s a superb wine in the making, but very much a Serralunga Barolo that needs time to blossom. (Drink between 2028-2041).”

Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2017 Barolo Ravera is dazzling. Deep, potent and virile, the 2017 has a lot to say, but it won’t be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, smoke, game, lavender and licorice convey a real impression of gravitas that is reinforced by the wine’s overall feel. This powerhouse Barolo is magnificent today in a sort of old-school meets new-school style.”

Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points “Moving over to Novello, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Ravera is slightly more simplistic in this vintage with a tart cherry element that opens loud over the bouquet. You might also notice crushed white pepper, salty limestone and crushed earth. The wine remains subtle in texture with silky tannins and medium weight. Some 6,500 bottles were made.”
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $75, that’s $71.25 at 5% off and $67.50 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “Aromatically more expressive and ripe with red flowers and fruits, the 2019 Barolo Ravera is more exuberant and open at this stage, with candied cherry, menthol, and sweet balsamic herbs. The palate takes a more savory and coiled stance at this youthful stage, with iron-rich earth, grenadine, and salted orange. Building tannins are in concert with a persistent spine of acidity that will need time to loosen its grip, but this is a fantastic wine to hold and drink 2026-2046.”
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94+ points “The 2020 Barolo Ravera is sleek, elegant and polished. It offers a captivating mix of the savory/mineral intensity of this site and the slightly smaller-scaled structure of the year. Black cherry, lavender, sage, coffee, mint and gravel abound. Elisa Scavino has done a terrific job softening the potent Ravera tannins. I can’t wait to see how this ages.”
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $85, that’s $80.75 at 5% off and $76.50 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 96 points “The 2021 Barolo Ravera has a jeweled ruby hue and is gorgeous and pure on the nose, with aromas of raspberry liqueur, sweet tea leaf, pressed flowers, and fresh sage. It’s elegant and refined on the palate, with a seamless and even feel, silky, ripe tannins, refreshing acidity, and a long, graceful finish. It’s a fabulous wine to taste now but offers a wide window for enjoyment over the coming 20 or so years. (Drink between 2025-2045).”

Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva DOCG 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $299, that’s $284.05 at 5% off and $269.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2016 Barolo Riserva is a dense, dark, towering wine. A rush of plum, pomegranate, spice, espresso, cloves and licorice saturates the palate. This sumptuous, full-throttle Barolo has a ton to offer. The interplay of textural richness and structure is compelling. This is a fabulous wine with great purity of fruit, depth and intensity. Scavino lovers will be delighted.”

Paolo Scavino Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva was released in January of 2019, and once again it looks to be a top prize. Licorice and flowers dominate the bouquet, and its beautiful red fruit is generous throughout. This wine has always been a beauty and consistently has had a high price tag to reflect that quality, going back to the first vintages of the 1990s. It has regularly sold for about $200 every year for the last decade. These vines are old, some of them very old (reaching the ripe age of 60 years old in 1990s, when many of them were replanted with carefully selected clones), producing an elegance and concentration that brings intensity and a high standard of aromas. This Barolo without a doubt shows its pedigree and a quality of noble perfumes that demonstrate characteristics of the greatest Nebbiolo vintages, all delivered with excellent concentration. The magic lingers on the palate, right up to the finish.”

Paolo Scavino Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $135, that’s $128.25 at 5% off and $121.50 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a new wine in the range. It takes the place of the Carobric, which was a blend of Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. A few years ago the Scavinos lost their lease on Cannubi, which impacted their ability to continue to make Carobric with the customary blend. That may have turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the new Rocche di Castiglione is off the charts. Silky, aromatic and pliant, with striking textural depth, the 2020 is immediately captivating. The purity of flavors is just breathtaking. What a wine!”
Lopez de Heredia is one of the world’s elite wine estates. Perched on a bend in the Rio Ebro, in the town of Haro, Bodegas Lopez de Heredia reigns over the heart of Spain’s Rioja wine region and its traditions. Founded in 1877, Lopez de Heredia boasts classic late-19th century architecture, but the dug-out cellars below impress even more. Here, Tempranillo and other grapes ferment in giant oak vats before ageing for several years in American and French oak. The estate holds the wines in bottle for many more years, building the complexity only time can offer. Finesse, fragrance, balance, and beauty like this can only be achieved with patience and experience.
Still a family-run operation (now managed by Maria José and Mercedes Lopez de Heredia), Lopez de Heredia continues to produce some of Spain’s, and the world’s, most extraordinary wines. The reds drink like the Bordeaux and Burgundies of before: lighter in body than most of today’s Rioja, extremely aromatic, capable of long cellaring, and uniquely individual. Anyone with a love for Riojan wine, or for Spanish history, ought to snag a few bottles of Lopez de Heredia.

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2011 Viña Tondonia Reserva is darker and shows riper fruit, a rounder palate and some dusty tannins. A year of ripeness, concentration and tannin, the wine is powerful with the finesse of Tondonia. Tasting this next to the textbook 2010 Tondonia revealed how this has more muscle and a wider back and the 2010 epitomizes the finesse and elegance. 270,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.”

R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Bosconia Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2004 750ml $199 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 98 points “The 2004 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva is very open, expressive and aromatic right away–as soon as it was poured into the glass–while the Tondonia took time to open up. This has a very elegant nose, and despite having less Garnacha than the Tondonia, it has a more Garnacha nose, a little heady with notes of cherries in liqueur and iodine (think Rayas). It has an elegant texture, very fine tannins and pungent flavors, and it’s persistent and powerful while keeping balance and freshness. The Bosconia Vineyard is a cooler vineyard that delivers fresher wines; the grapes were picked quite late, from the 20th of October, later than the ones from the Tondonia vineyard. Only 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019. Some of these vintages have had a much longer élevage, though not necessarily all in barrel, as the wines also spent time in the ancient oak vats.”
