Arterberry Maresh:

Grand Cru Oregon Wines

The Dundee Hills are a hallowed place in Oregon wine. Though we’d never attempt to pick favorites among the classic Willamette Valley AVAs, Dundee Hills holds a special place for good reasons. It’s home to some of the oldest Pinot Noir producers in the state and home to some of the finest vineyards in the entire United States. “It started here for a reason,” is their slogan, after all.

Though the AVA has only formally been on the books for twenty years, it holds over sixty of history. Abbey Ridge, Archery Summit, Domaine Drouhin, Durant, Résonance, White Rose… the list goes on. Even the road where many of these vineyards dot is famous: Warden Hill Road. You’ll find Cameron Winery here, Winderlea, Holloran, Alexana, Erath, and more. It’s a bustling place. But long before these folks stuck their shovels in the ground, there was Arterberry Maresh.

In 1959, the Maresh family purchased a hilltop farm a little west of downtown. Dundee was a tiny town and still is, despite the steady line of traffic on the state highway running through it. When the Maresh family bought up additional parcels of surrounding farmland, Dick Erath convinced them to plant some to Pinot Noir, and Oregon’s fifth-oldest vineyard was born.

Today the estate is run by third-generation owner and winemaker, Jim Maresh. And the wines “are some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere—not just in the US”, per Erin Brooks of the Wine Advocate. They’re classics with deep roots and old vines, but they’re as fresh and fascinating as any newcomer. These benchmark wines somehow capture Jim’s easy-going yet seriously-nerdy-under-the-skin personality. We love them, we love the prices, and we know you’ll love them, too.

Arterberry Maresh Old Vines Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml $54.50 special, 25 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points
“The 2022 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Old Vines is remarkably pretty, cascading up from the glass with a vibrant blend of minty herbs and crushed cherries complemented by hints of cola and spice. This has energy to spare, silken in feel with ripe red berry fruits that envelop the senses. It takes on a darker shade toward the close as tactile minerals saturate. A bump of juicy acidity enlivens the finish as sweet tannins tug at the senses and notes of blood orange slowly fade. The 2022 is like a well-muscled dancer. It’s already so likable that many collectors may not have the patience to watch it fully mature. The Dundee Hills Old Vines is sourced from vines that average 41 years old, all Pommard clones, sourced from 75% Maresh and 25% Weber Vineyard.”

Arterberry Maresh ‘Maresh Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2018 750ml $59 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The 2018 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard is an incredible wine. It opens slowly to an arresting perfume of dusty earth, dried rose petals, tea leaves, licorice and amaro with a wealth of bright red berry fruit at the core. The palate is elegant, supple and juicy, with an expansive fan of layered, spicy flavors and a very long finish. It’s hard to resist now, but it will have more to offer with time in bottle.”

Arterberry Maresh ‘Maresh Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 20 bottles in stock now
Decanter 97 points
“The Maresh is a combination of 1970 and 1974 planted vines. Mouthfuls of complexity and elegance. High-toned red fruits and forest-driven umami character, pine bough, blood orange and spice. Long hang times for 2022, the low alcohol is evocative of Old World Pinot Noir. There is a darkness and complexity of the wine, with an intensity of flavour, only 5% new oak, 20 months in barrel. Spiced cinnamon, fresh red strawberries, savoury clove and smoked sea salt, bring an intensity, and a crushed stone minerality finishes this beautiful wine. Silken elegance and intensity combine in a gorgeous wine.”

Arterberry Maresh Weber Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml $64.50 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“Out of curiosity, winemaker Jim Maresh and I re-tasted the 2019 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard to compare to the recently bottled 2021s. (Weber Vineyard was previously owned by Jim’s grandfather and part of the Maresh Vineyard.) It’s beginning to curl inward, taking plenty of time to blossom from touches of iodine and flint to wild blackberries, tea leaves, lavender, salted licorice and candied orange peel. The medium-bodied palate is powerful and refreshing, with youthfully latent fruit and a long, spicy finish. Purchasers can look forward to an exciting evolution as this matures over the next 10-15 years.”

Arterberry Maresh Weber Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 31 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points
“The 2022 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard bursts from the glass without even a swirl, displaying an exuberant bouquet of black cherry sauce, rum cake, autumnal spice and hints of balsam herbs. This is a beast, succulent and fleshy in feel yet elegant to the core, with depths of ripe red berry fruits that drench the palate in primary concentration. Minty herbs mix with steeped plums through the dramatically long finale, leaving a subtle collection of grippy tannins to linger on. There’s so much depth and power under the hood here. Although the 2022 has a more immediate feel, it also has a deep complexity that keeps me coming back.”

Molitor in Urzig

After 35 years at the helm of the family business, Markus Molitor remains one of the most respected winemakers in the world. With broad holdings, Molitor crafts dozens of wines each vintage. He believes that every single sub-parcel and selective pick should be vinified to its utmost potential. What results is a deeply rewarding if sprawling portfolio.

Where to start other than the incomparable Ürziger Würzgarten? No other vineyard in the Mosel results in wines so intensely spicy, earthy and so richly tropical. The lightness and elegance of the fruit is impossible to replicate. The vineyard is famous for the high percentage of iron in the soil in addition to its blue and gray slate, contributing a spicy characteristic that proves its name (Ürziger Würzgarten translates to “the spice garden of Ürzig”). Molitor’s wines in particular rank among the best examples from the vineyard. His holdings include those of the former Jos. Christoffel Jr., whose estate dates to the 12th century.

Despite their sheer deliciousness of these wines in their youth, do try to be patient: the return on investment could not be greater. The citrus and honeyed white fruit, the pure mineral backbone, and the fountain of youth-like freshness that accompanies these bottles is without compare. Fortunately, for you, these wines are ridiculously undervalued and will provide decades of delight to come for such a small tariff.

The palate is very elegant, lush and ripe yet most of all vibrantly fresh and salty-piquant, revealing a salivating, firmly structured and tannic finish. Round, lush and elegant on the palate, this is a salty, piquant and textural Würzgarten with dramatic tension and grip. Very long and endlessly salty. Tasted in May 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92 points
“From the higher parts of the cru, the 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Golden Capsule) is clear, bright, intense and fruity on the elegant, slatey nose. The palate is lush, round and aromatic as well as refined, and the sweetness is balanced by the delicate, vivid, crystalline acidity. The finish is stimulatingly salty. A lovely wine that I would keep for some years, though the 2019 already drinks very well. Tasted in May 2021.”

“The 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese (Golden Capsule) is complex and mineral on the densely woven yet fresh and crunchy-herbal nose. It’s a dense, concentrated, piquant and structured Spätlese with lush and ripe fruit whose sweetness is nearly completely absorbed by the Würzgarten raciness and iron-rich terroir character. This is a fabulous Spätlese! Tasted in April 2019.”

Succulent yet refined and elegant on the superbly balanced and seamless palate, this is a generous yet refined Auslese with subtle yet sustainable mineral finesse and energy. Stimulatingly salty and crystalline on the airy finish. Tasted from AP 89 20 in May 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is a very intense and concentrated yet pure and fruity Auslese provided with refreshing crunchy, herbal and iron-rich, clayey slate aromas. This displays perfect botrytis on a bright, pure, fresh and delicate bouquet full of ripe stone and citrus fruits as well as notes of crushed stones. It is fascinatingly fresh and salty-piquant on the palate, with pronounced acidity; this is a sweet but weightless Auslese with acidity that cuts through fruit and slate and tickles the tongue. This is a highly stimulating and crystalline Auslese that is impossible to spit out. Simply amazing! Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is a really excellent, frisky and digestible BA for aperitifs, entrées and desserts. 6% alcohol. Tasted in May 2021.”

Rosenthal Wine Merchant Note
“Jean-Marc owns a parcel of Aligoté in the village of Remigny planted in 2000. Vinified and aged entirely in stainless steel, this humble Bourgogne delights with brisk acidity and pure, tensile flavors of preserved lemon, sage, and musk melon. Nimble and easy-drinking, it nonetheless displays a modest degree of complexity for its variety, as well as a mouthwatering saline edge.”

Domaine Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc 2021 750ml $149 special, 13 bottles in stock now
Burghound 87-90 points
“A deft but still easily perceptible dollop of wood sets off cool, airy and attractively fresh aromas of various white orchard fruit and just sliced lemon. There is excellent volume to the medium-bodied and sappy flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the beautifully long, balanced, dry and complex finale. This is an excellent and ageworthy Bourgogne and worth checking out.”

“The 2022 Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches has a more austere bouquet demanding some coaxing from the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a saline entry and fine weight in the mouth. Not complex per se, yet it feels quite long and spicy on the finish. Fine. Drink: 2023-2030. (Jan 2024)”

“A complex and generous wine, with a rare elegance. The colour is extraordinarily luminous. On the nose, a palette of interesting and varied aromas: syrup, grilled almond, preserved fruit. In the mouth, a silky and ample texture which does not exclude freshness or lightness. Long on the palate, with flavours recalling grilled bread and fruit jam. Always a consummate example of a white Burgundy, this wine is perfection!”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points “Pico produces his 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons from certified organic fruit in the climat of Séchet. Unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp green orchard fruit, almond paste, white flowers and orange oil, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with an ample core of fruit, chalky structuring extract and a long, saline finish.”

Domaine Pinson Freres Mont de Milieu, Chablis Premier Cru 2021 750ml $56.50 special, 22 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 91 points
“The 2021 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is the largest cuvée from Pinson thanks to their 4.5-hectares of vines planted between 18 and 40 years ago. Fermented in 10% new oak and then aged in barrel, it has an expressive bouquet, outlined with lemon peel, clementine and light pear aromas. The palate is well-defined with a crisp line of acidity, taut and fresh with a saline finish, I would just like a little more persistence to develop during its élevage. Fine.”

Louis Jadot Domaine des Heritiers Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016 750ml $249 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points
“Wow. This is so rich and exotic on the nose with green-mango, papaya, lemon and peach aromas. Full-bodied, layered and extremely powerful and dense. Deep and thought-provoking. Try after 2023, but already a joy to taste.”

Grape of the Week:

Muscat

Muscat seems to be a love it or hate it variety. Like Gewurztraminer it’s produced in a range of styles from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. Like Gewurztraminer, too, it has a powerfully heady perfume of fresh flowers and candied citrus. According to Wine-Searcher, Muscat has a “higher-than-average presence of monoterpenes (aroma compounds),” giving rise to the intense and distinctive aromatics.

It’s a bit confusing, too, since the term covers a range of cultivars with varying levels of quality (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is generally considered the finest), and the French (Muscat), Italian (Moscato), Spanish (Moscatel), and German (Muskateller) names are all commonly used.

But it’s worth a second chance. In its Moscato d’Asti form, you’ll find a lovely fragrant number with gentle sweetness and soft bubbles. It’s phenomenal with fruit-based desserts and custards. Prefer bone-dry? Take any of our German or Austrian selections for a test drive if you prefer light and restrained, or sample our Spanish Moscatel for intensity without the sugar. Prefer Muscat as a spice and not the main course? Cameron Winery has a gorgeous Friuli-inspired blend that pairs with just about any lighter fare.

It’s a flexible grape with fragrance to spare. So, set down your Chardonnay for now and give the explosively delicious Muscat a swirl!

Drink as an aperitif, perfect accompaniment to Pan-Asian cuisine and lobster as well as pastry, fruit based and creamy desserts and blue cheeses.”

Siro Pacenti

“Giancarlo Pacenti is by far the leading exponent of the modern school of Brunello di Montalcino.  No other producer has succeeded in crafting wines of this much textural beauty and refinement.” – Antonio Galloni

If you prefer your Tuscan reds to lean modern stylistically, think Altesino or Casanova di Neri, then we have a producer that deserves your attention. These are wines that have power and richness, but a deft hand in the cellar keeps the elegance of the Sangiovese grape intact. We offer three vintages of the old-vine bottling in stock. Sourced from 40- to 60-year-old vines from the Pelagrilli and Piancornello vineyard, these are concentrated beauties that will unfurl majestically in your cellar or decanter.

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The Siro Pacenti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne shows an extra degree of concentration and thickness thanks both to the vintage (this hot and dry growing season produced darker, more intense berries) and the older vines that also work toward greater fruit weight. The Vecchie Vigne shows lots of depth and textural weaving with dark berries and oak spice. In fact, the oak (and that big 15% alcohol) is more prominent in this 18,000-bottle release. It offers long-lasting notes of smoke, sweet cedar and woodshop.”

Siro Pacenti PS Vecchie Vigne, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml $99 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points
“The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne opens with hauntingly dark florals and balsamic tones, as swirling bring about hints of black currant and crushed stone. This is supremely soft-textured, yet lifted by cooling minerality and bright acidity that guides its crunchy wild berry fruits across the palate. It tapers off with amazing length and potency, drenching the senses with primary concentration, as a framework of fine tannins gently tug at the cheeks. The 2018 Vecchie Vigne is a radiant Brunello in need of cellaring to fully blossom. That said, I don’t remember ever tasting a VV from Siro Pacenti with this much energy. I’m very eager to taste this again with some bottle age. “

James Suckling 99 points
“Black cherries, lavender, black mushrooms, lead pencil and violets on the nose. Full-bodied with a powerful and polished tannin structure that follows through to the very end. Pure, silky texture. Fascinating aftertaste of ripe fruit, yet it’s fresh and tense. Some orange peel, too. Glorious at the end. So well crafted and pointed. This needs another three to five years to integrate but already extremely impressive.”
