GD Vajra: Barolo Born of Family 7-6-25

The Vajra family embodies the beauty of the Langhe and the inseperable human history of its wines and culture. Founded in 1972 by Aldo Vajra, this estate was born out of a young man’s desire to reconnect with his family’s roots. At a time when many were leaving the countryside, Aldo went the other direction—back to his grandparents’ farm in Vergne, near Barolo village, to embrace a life of viticulture and stewardship. Today, with his wife Milena and their children Giuseppe, Isidoro, and Francesca fully involved, GD Vajra has become one of Piedmont’s most respected family-run estates.

The Vajra Family

GD Vajra’s Barolos are known for their purity, aromatics, and classical structure. The wines walk a line between tradition and clarity, blending long macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak with a modern sensibility toward freshness and finesse. The flagship estate Barolo bottling, simply labeled Barolo Albe, is a tribute to the sunrise across three vineyards—Coste di Vergne, Fossati, and La Volta—offering a beautifully accessible yet complex take on Nebbiolo. It’s a benchmark wine that captures the spirit of the house: respectful of history, but never bound by dogma. Doesn’t hurt that its both utterly delicious and the most screaming deal in the entire region at $39 on our shelf. Well….$35 if you take advantage of our sale through Wednesday!

The single vineyard Barolos from Vajra express the extraordinary diversity of terroir within the Barolo DOCG. Bricco delle Viole, the highest cru in the commune of Barolo, is the jewel in the crown. Its altitude, light soils, and cooling breezes produce a wine of uncommon lift, floral aromatics, and age-worthy elegance. Other acclaimed crus include Ravera – a favorite of mine – sourced from Novello and known for its structure and power, and Coste di Rose, which balances red fruit brightness with graceful tannins.

Vajra’s vineyards are farmed organically with a deep sensitivity to biodiversity. The family takes a holistic approach to viticulture—avoiding chemical treatments, encouraging native flora, and working every inch of soil by hand where possible.

Within the Vajra barrel room, colored sunlight filtering through stained glass windows ordained by a monk, one is invited into a contemplation that mirrors the experience invoked by the wines. A deep sense of the family’s humility and vision in every moment. Whether you’re cellaring Bricco delle Viole for a decade or enjoying the expressive Albe today, Vajra delivers the heart of Barolo in every bottle.

#9 Wine Spectator Top 100

“This effusive red displays cherry, raspberry, rose, iron, juniper and hay flavors, underscored by vibrant acidity. Harmonious and supple in texture, with a long aftertaste of red fruit, mineral and floral elements. Best from 2028 through 2049. 7,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported.”

G.D. Vajra Bricco delle Viole, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 25 bottles in stock now

“The 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, Vajra’s flagship, is very fine. Dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange, spice and lavender are nicely amplified. The 2020 is gracious and elegant, but its youthful Nebbiolo tannins will require some time to soften. The 2020 is another wine that captures my keen interests with its sublime balance. I would be thrilled to own it.”

G.D. Vajra Coste di Rose, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $64.50, that’s $61.27 at 5% off and $58.05 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now

“The 2018 Barolo Coste di Rose is a delicate, understated Barolo that will need a bit of time to fully emerge. There’s lovely purity to the fruit here, but also some angular contours that need to resolve. The 2018 is a mid-weight wine in the style of the vintage, and yet there is fine balance.”
James Suckling 92 points “Very clean red-berry fruit on the nose, together with citrus and cedar notes. Medium body with fine-grained tannins and a tight bead of fruit at the end. Sustainable. Best from 2024.”

G.D. Vajra Coste di Rose, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now

“Compared to Bricco delle Viole, Coste di Rose is distinguished by sandstone soils at lower elevations of 340 to 350 meters above sea level. There is a lot of variability in the soils, and as they change, Nebbiolo behaves differently, picking up new aromas and textural qualities along the way. The G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Coste di Rose shows a darker core of fruit with dusty earthy tones and campfire ash. The grape skins were quite thick in 2019, meaning that less work was done with submerged cap and other extractive methods. The beauty of this wine is the mouthfeel, which feels rich, tight and silky. Coste di Rose was first made in 2015.”

“A Barolo of remarkable elegance and complexity. Lifted aromas of mixed wild berries, candied rose petals, cinnamon, and whole clove, are accompanied by warm, earthy notes. Tart cherries and cranberries dominate the palate, with woodsy undertones and chewy tannins that provide heft without overpowering. Savory and medicinal herbs linger on the finish, making this a captivating expression of this renowned cru. Drink Now – 2045.”

G.D. Vajra Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now

“The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a powerful, tightly wound wine. Gravel, smoke, cured meats, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol emerge, but only with quite a bit of reticence. This deceptively mid-weight Barolo has a good bit of brawn. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges from behind the tannins.”

“The organic G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Ravera (with fruit from the most sought-after cru in the village of Novello) reveals gorgeous tonality and color. The wine shines bright with dark ruby and garnet gemstone. Healthy Nebbiolo colors like this can be admired across the 2019 vintage. Ravera represents a union of different geologies from Barolo and Castiglione Falletto. The site has shown extraordinary versatility, especially in the face of climate change, to make wines of both strength and elegance. It is softly textured but also strong in fiber, with silky sensations followed by dark fruit and concentration. Ravera has a character all its own, and the operative word here is power.”

“The Ravera cru, one of the estate’s prized holdings, is known for its calcareous soil and old vines that contribute to the wine’s depth and ageability. This Barolo showcases crushed raspberries and red currants intertwined with wild thyme and fresh laurel. Subtle notes of cinchona bark, whole cinnamon, and fresh porcini add complexity. On the palate, warmed mixed berry jam is dusted with crushed cloves, pepper, and earthy hints of truffle and underbrush. Fine and elegant tannins provide structure, while the well-balanced warmth envelops the senses like a comforting hug. Drink Now – 2045.”
