Weingut Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers. We stock their wines by the pallet-load. And we’re not the only ones obsessed. Folks frequently tell us that a bottle of aged Hermannshohle GG (with its “Grand Canyon-like depths”) or the humble yet delicious Estate Trocken (“Fantastic brilliance”!) or the fiercely mineral and refined Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese was THE Riesling that sparked their passion for German terroir (it’s a bit like drinking Alpine snow).
Despite their extensive lineup, there’s rarely a wine made here that isn’t the finest of its type and terroir each vintage.
Even the entry-level wines are nothing to shrug at, offering unrivalled complexity for a modest entry fee. From there, they produce dozens of options from their vineyards ranging from bone dry to nobly sweet, ethereal to luscious, and austere to hedonistic. Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96-98 points “The 2023 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Felsentürmchen Grosses Gewächs is picked in the fully south-facing site of porphyry and melaphyr. Cornelius Dönnhoff says this is the most challenging site to work, simply because the stones are so hard and unforgiving, retaining almost no water. Thus, a year like 2023 was brilliant for this site. It is always the first GG site to be harvested because the rock retains heat from the day. Tender reduction still casts a flinty spell on the nose. Lovely savor implies crushed citrus foliage merged into iron oxide on the nose. The palate is taut, citric, bright with immense linearity, moving with absolute ease and direction, with energy and punch, towards a zesty, cool finish, long, sustained, all with savor and saltiness. The 2023 is a total joy of clarity, direction and stony poise. This is so elegant, so slender, so powerful, and no, this is not a contradiction. (Bone-dry).”

Dönnhoff says that for him, Auslese is merely a more concentrated Spätlese. He notes that passerillage also plays a part here. Slight smoke and Reine Claude plum compote on the nose continue straight to the palate, edged with beautiful lemon brightness. The 2023 shows gorgeous depth, deep lemon and gentle sweetness. Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96 points “The 2023 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Auslese is made from mostly highly ripe grapes with around 10-15% of botrytized fruit, all pressed in a basket press, slowly, over hours, drip by drip is extracted, without rupturing the grape skins. The tender nose is not obvious; it shows distant notions of iced Reine Claude compote with an overtone of passion fruit foliage; all is lemony and tender. The palate is sweet, bright and concentrated, but it has a slender, taut footprint. Extreme elegance is the name of the game, and the tenor is still of fresh lemon juice and zest. Restraint and elegance are exemplified here. (Sweet).”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “Pressed with whole bunches in a basket press for about five hours and vinified in a single halbstück (650 liter), the 2021 Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese is one of the rare botrytis wines of the vintage, and it opens with a clear, precise and aromatic bouquet with candied pink grapefruit aromas. Lush and round on the palate, this is an intense, generous and salty, piquant and delicate yet also rich and sweet but light and lifted Auslese with great balance and elegance. A fabulous, delicate and fine, juicy and filigreed Auslese. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”
The 2024 vintage has reviewers and producers excited. Though July and August brought the heat we’ve come to expect in our dry summers, September was usually cool. This slowed ripening, giving the grapes more time to develop those complex aromas we all seek out. The results are rich fruit and spice profiles with plenty of supporting acidity and fine tannins.
