Winery Note “Limestone sand from the Miocene sea, in the ‘Hominis Fides’ named vineyard. Fermentation in used casks and ageing on fine lees for 10 months. Gunflint, anise, pear and quince. The young massal selection vines in Hominis Fides are growing, developing, putting down deep roots and producing beautiful fruit. Every year, we can see the identity of the vineyard asserting itself and differentiating itself from Le Poste. It is true that the Miocene sea sand offers a truly remarkable foundation both for Grenache and Clairette. We prune the vines as bush vines and lift them on stakes so that we never have to top the shoots in spring. I am against the use of topping in a Mediterranean climate – it makes no sense to use this mini-pruning technique and force vines to grow secondary buds just when they need their fruit to flower.”

Ripe black raspberries, blackberries, pepper, graphite, and smoke meat all define this medium to full-bodied 2022, which has velvety tannins and a great mid-palate. It’s a blockbuster of a Côte Rôtie that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age. While Gigondas’s Louis Barruol is well known for his reference point Gigondas releases, his terrific Northern Rhône releases are, unfortunately, less well known. As with his Southern Rhônes, Louis likes lots of stems and used barrels, and these wines all have classic profiles.”

Expansive, spice- and mineral-tinged black raspberry, kirsch and boysenberry aromas are complicated by suggestions of incense, lavender and smoky minerals. Alluringly sweet and focused in the mouth, offering densely packed red and blue fruit preserve, floral pastille and exotic spice flavors that smoothly balance weight and finesse. This wine shows superb finishing clarity and mineral lift on the penetrating and impressively long finish, which features polished tannins and resonating fruit, floral and mineral notes.”
The coastal village of Suvereto resides in one of the warmer micro-climates on the Tuscan coast just south of Bolgheri. Despite its long winemaking and farming history going back as far as 1000 AD, the Suvereto DOC was only officially recognized in 2000. Set in the fertile Val di Cornia, clay soils and proximity to the sea give intensity to the flavors, producing ripe and direct wines typically made from Cabernet, Merlot and Sangiovese.

In 1998, Fabio Chiarelotto purchased the Montepeloso estate. Though the vineyard was already well-renowned, Chiarelotto envisioned even greater potential. Retraining, pruning, and even re-grafting many vines, Fabio was committed to perfection, pulling up thousands of low-quality vines and replacing them with varieties more suited to the windy warmth of Suvereto. 

We’re featuring three wines from their collection: Gabbro, Eneo, and Nardo. Gabbro is composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and rivals plenty of Super Tuscans with its Italian signatures. Eneo includes many local and rare varieties such as Montepulciano (an indigenous Italian grape), Alicante Bouschet (a dark-red grape cultivated from Grenache and Petit Bouschet), and Marselan (a French cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache). Lastly, Nardo (Tuscan for lavender) is the crown jewel, a blend of the estate’s oldest and finest vines of indigenous Italian varieties.
 
Chairelotto has found a mix of varieties that he feels express the spirit of Suvereto and Montepeloso, and the results reflect his unending quest for perfection.

For the Love of Oregon
 
Both Renée Saint-Amour and Grant Coulter were raised to appreciate Oregon wines, despite hailing from out of state. Their mutual interest and love of adventure brought them to the Valley. Grant worked with Hamacher and was winemaker at Beaux Freres and Flâneur, before committing full time to their own label: Hundred Suns.
 
Hundred Suns was named for the number of days between flowering and harvest, their Pinots drink like a love letter to the Willamette Valley. These are unique, from an assortment of some of the most interesting vineyards in the Willamette Valley including one of our favorites, Bednarik. This vineyard flies under the radar a bit, but Ken Wright fans from the 90’s know the site well. Renée and Grant’s version offers beautiful, crunchy structure allied to a beguiling mixture of black cherry fruit and savory overtones.
 
Suns. This project represents one of the most exciting new labels in the Willamette Valley. Lovers of Oregon wines, and Beaux Freres in particular, should stock up now before these become hard to find.

The first sip shows a center point of sweetness that is buttressed by ripe tannins and a hint of nori that give the wine a serious edge. With air and time, the sappy spicy notes that come from partial whole cluster fermentation resonate on the finish, making this wine that will drink well now and over the next 10 years. The Old Eight Cut refers to a diamond cut dating back to the 1400s using simple tools and few cuts to enhance the natural brilliance of the stone without disguising its true nature.”

Winery Note “One of our perennial favorites, this old, own-rooted site shows aromas of sour cherry, hibiscus tea, and tangerine. The palate of pure red fruit and the spine of tannins from marine sedimentary soils make this wine both serious and playful. Rooted in marine sedimentary soil deep in the cool coastal foothills, this 6-acre, own-rooted vineyard was planted in 1988 by William Bednarik to Pommard and Wädenswil clones of Pinot Noir. A late flowering and the cool conditions of this special site led us to pick this fruit almost two weeks after all our other pinot sites. The extended hang time created a stunning wine with pure Mt. Hood strawberries, cranberry sauce, and fresh, silky tannins. Fermented with natural yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered.”

Hundred Suns Carson Phillips Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml $59 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Candied cherries and raspberry preserve mix it up with a crazy aroma of…gummy peach rings. Really. The first sip delivers cherries dusted in cocoa powder with fruit that is present and full, and it carries a beautiful acid streak that is born from this cool vineyard in the northwest corner of the Dundee Hills. Planted 23 years ago, this site is farmed sustainably without the use of synthetic chemicals or herbicides. Dry-farmed and deep-rooted, the vines express the intensity of the volcanic soils from which they draw their nutrients and water. A cool spring and late bud break quickly transitioned to warm weather. Persistent summer heat allowed us to harvest fully ripe fruit on September 17th. Fermented with natural yeast and 25% whole cluster, this gorgeous wine layers dark cherry, candied strawberries and a rich palate. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.”
 
Hundred Suns Lone Feather Vineyard Pinot Noir, McMinnville 2023 750ml $59 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Clinging to western reaches of the McMinnville AVA, this old, own-rooted site once again set a meager crop, but the resulting wine is incredible. Marionberry and dark blueberry fruits mingle with tart cherries. Naturally a high acid site, the deep crimson color is a visual cue to what lies beneath: ripe and sweet on the palette the tannins from these thick skinned, tiny berries give the wine the structure to hold it all together. This wine will drink well now and deep into the future. The Lone Feather Vineyard is planted on rocky basalt soils on the edge the McMinnville AVA. Cool, coastal breezes and rocky volcanic soil help to focus the deep flavors of these own rooted vines established in the late 1980’s. Under the stewardship of Warren and Jennifer Feather, this site is meticulously farmed with the goal of sustaining this legacy vineyard for years to come. The warm growing season in 2023 gifted tiny berries with deep concentration of dark fruit. Paired with the site’s natural acidity, this wine will continue to grow in complexity and be delicious for years to come.”

Kopke
 
Considered the oldest Port house, Kopke has been through adverse times in its nearly 400-year history, seeing dramatic shifts in the climate, swings in the popularity of Port, and the rise and fall of populist dictators. Through all of this, Kopke has been consistent in their commitment to making the greatest Tawny and Colheita (vintage Tawny) Port available.
 
The unbelievably youthful vintage Colheitas are perfect examples of how age adds concentration and depth, with the traditional Kopke freshness that keeps these so vibrant. These wines are aged for at least a decade at Kopke, longer than the minimum requirements. All of our selections will continue to show their highlights and develop rich spice and dried fruit characteristics for years to come.
 
The resulting Colheitas are lighter in style than a typical Vintage Port, offering a more refreshing alternative that aligns more closely with today’s popular preferences. Although typically served as dessert wines, these Colheitas pair well with decadent savory dishes and appetizers such as caramelized onion tartlets, pâtés, fine cheeses, and confit.

Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 1934 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled March 2022 with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Of the many Sogevinus Tawnies that the producer showed over its various houses, this was the oldest and tasted like it. Yet, like all of the producer’s oldies, they do a great job in producing complexity without the fruit seeming too old. I’m told it is never topped off too. There are only about 450 liters left for the future. It is a bit darker, leaning a little more to molasses, but it’s surprisingly fresh for its age. It has fine concentration and an endless finish. It is certainly special, not automatically a lot better than, say, a 50 Year, but a very different experience.”

Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional textural elegance and finesse. It is a positively stellar wine.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “Bollinger’s 2015 Brut Grand Année is an intriguing wine in that is clearly reflects the decision to pick on the later side in order to avoid vegetal notes derived from the mismatch of alcoholic and phenolic ripeness. “Balance was hard to achieve in 2015,” Chef de Cave Denis Bunner notes. “At 10% in sugar, the fruit was simply not ripe. We had to wait to reach the optimal window of ripeness.” Bunner also opted to increase the Chardonnay, so the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, as opposed to the more typical 70/30 blend, with more Verzenay than Aÿ in the Pinots. Dried citrus peel, sage, menthol, sage, tangerine peel and spice build with some coaxing. Light tropical overtones develop with aeration. There’s real density and textural richness here. This will be a fascinating vintage to follow. Stylistically, it is the complete opposite from the much more linear 2014 that precedes it. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2023. Drink: 2028-2040.”

Château des Jacques: Jadot in Beaujolais
 
Louis Jadot purchased their Moulin-à-Vent estate in 1996, becoming one of the first major Burgundy houses with significant holdings in the region. Their vineyards including holdings in some of the most famous Beaujolais crus of Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, and Fleurie. These vineyards are notable for their pink granite soils, unique to the region, on which Gamay excels.
 
Since taking over the estate, Maison Jadot has added organic and biodynamic practices, less with a mind towards certification than towards the health and character of each parcel.
 
The hand harvested grapes are rigorously sorted and destemmed before undergoing Burgundian winemaking techniques such as long macerations, natural fermentation, and barrel maturation. 2022 saw significantly smaller yields due to intense heat in July. The vines responded with smaller berries with intense concentration. The resulting wines are silky and deep, with excellent aging potential.
 
We’d say that these are surprisingly complex, but the secret is out about the quality of Beaujolais, especially from illustrious producers such as Jadot.

Winery Note “As ‘la Roche’ means, this vineyard is situated under the windmill (Moulin-A-Vent) on the mother rock old of 320 million years Only the Gamay grape is able to prosper on such soils almost without any water reserve throughout the year. Vinification: Picked and sorted by hand, then often de-stemmed, the grapes macerate slowly over the course of three to four weeks. Both pigeage and pumping over takes place during fermentation depending on the vintage. Winemaking and bottling: The wines are aged in our historic cellar for 10 months, a period spent in oak barrels, partly new and partly one, two and three vinages old.. The oak used to make the barrels comes from the French forests of Allier, Limousin and Nivernais. Tasting / Food pairing: La Roche is a wine of great tension, with lots of minerality and precision. It is very linear in style, a characteristic that makes it a particularly apt match for complex and refined dishes.”

The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It’s fleshy, but right at the finish, it is a tad sweeter than I would like, lacking a bit of sapidity and tension. Near, yet not quite there! That said, it remains a decent Moulin-à-Vent that will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. (Drink between 2025-2033).”

Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92 points “A blend of 76.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.8% Merlot, 3.5% Petit Verdot and 0.4% Malbec, Chimney Rock’s 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown Stags Leap District offers up some peppery-clove spice notes and hints of hickory layered atop blackberries and black cherries. It’s full-bodied, velvety and slightly open-knit but nicely concentrated, ending long, with hints of vanilla oak. Drink 2025-2035.”

The medium-bodied palate is elegantly structured, with firm yet fine tannins that have impressive staying power. It’s clearly a successful 2022 and has a great nose of ripe red and black fruits, chocolaty wood, tobacco, and cedar pencils. A classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s medium to full-bodied and has a round, plush mouthfeel and outstanding length. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle any time over the coming decade. It reminds me of the 2019. Hats off to winemaker Elizabeth Vianna for a brilliant classic cuvée in a challenging vintage. Drink 2025-2035.”

The Eyrie Vineyards
 
The Eyrie Vineyards is the original winery of the Dundee Hills. Founder David Lett selected his location after careful consideration, wanting to prove that cool-climate European varieties could thrive in the United States.
 
In 2005, his soft-spoken yet brilliant son, Jason Lett, took over as winemaker and vineyard manager. He explored new varieties, such as Trousseau, without compromising on quality. The winery produces about the same volume it always has, around 9,000 cases annually, keeping the focus on craft and quality. We adore these wines. They are precious beyond measure, a reflection of the Letts’ foresight, knowledge, and hard work.

Spring frost affected some varieties in 2022, but winemaker Jason Lett says these old Pinot Gris vines, planted in 1979, are located at higher elevations and didn’t suffer frost damage because the buds were not yet out. “The result is a higher proportion of old vines,” he says, of the fruit in this 2022. It has detailed scents of green pear and apple blossom, cashews and bread dough. The light-bodied palate is layered and floral, a touch of textural grip balanced by mouthwatering acidity, and it has a long, expressive finish.”

Ultra smooth and seamless, it is beautiful now but will also bring rewards with cellaring.”

Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 93 points “Predominantly Tibouren, with the balance of the blend being Grenache and Rolle, Peyrassol’s super pale 2019 Cotes de Provence Rose Le Clos Peyrassol offers up scents of crushed stone, garrigue, white peach and lime, all tinged with tart red berries. It’s medium-bodied on the palate, with a silky-wet stone feel and a lingering finish that seems to build in red fruit intensity while remaining citrusy and refreshing at the same time. One of the best wines in this year’s tasting, this is a limited-production cuvée from a walled vineyard located on the estate.”

Cooling and poised, yet still juicy on the palate, the 2022 finishes with admirable length, leaving green melon and inner florals to fade slowly.”

It’s electric on the palate, which is creamy yet structured and focused, with a fine bead of bubbles and a zesty, tangy backbone of acidity. Long and tense finish. 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay (all premier and grand cru), 10% of wines are vinified in oak casks. 10 years on lees. 3.8 g/L dosage. Disgorged in the second half of 2024. Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points “The 2009 Extra Brut Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is stellar. I can’t remember a young Clos Saint-Hilaire with this much sheer immediacy. Then again, we are talking about 2009. Blood orange, spice, gingerbread and new leather play off a core of vibrant, red-toned Pinot fruit. Blocking the malolactic fermentation further emphasizes energy. The 2009 finishes with mind-blowing purity and exceptional finesse. This is the first vintage with some of the production bottled in magnum. The essence of Pinot. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 2024. Drink: 2027-2044.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous “[Unscored per winery request] The 2020 Barolo Rupestris is an elegant, sculpted wine. It shows the mid-weight structure of the year nicely. Sweet red cherry fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper, orange peel and dried flowers open with some coaxing. I would leave this alone in the cellar for a few years, as time in bottle is essential here. I won’t be surprised if this fills out a bit over the coming years, as is often the case here. Many years ago Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR. (Drink between 2026-2045).”

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “This flight of three Biondi-Santi wines starts off on the right foot thanks to the pristine bouquet and lively fruit of the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino. This is the entry-level wine (although the price point certainly suggests otherwise). It shows very detailed and chiseled aromas of wild cherry, cassis, dried violet, rust and orange skin. The wine carries a strong structural frame; however, the mouthfeel is ethereal and light notwithstanding.”
