Alzinger:

The Insider’s Ticket to the Wonder of the Wachau

The beauty of Austria is something to experience, but there is one area that truly stands out, both for its charm and the amazing wine: the Wachau. This is where you’ll find legends like F.X Pichler and Weingut Knoll within strolling distance of one another. And there is little doubt that having Knoll across the street, creating one of the most iconic white wines in the world, inspired a young Leo Alzinger.

Representing the second generation of winemaking in the Alzinger family, Leo developed a style reflecting his analytical and precise nature that allowed each parcel to shine through individually.

California Zinfandel Sale

Red Zinfandels are hearty reds stuffed full of spicy flavor and impactful, jammy fruit. The grape might as well be considered a Californian variety – it certainly boasts an impressive number of old and ancient vines. Plantings date back over 150 years, with some ancient vines still in production. Additional plantings began in earnest in the 1970s when an off-dry rosé style known as “blush” or “white Zinfandel” exploded in popularity.

We have those 1970s plantings to thank for why dry red Zins are so delicious yet still affordable. Dozens of heritage sites are still producing, preventing scarcity from inflating prices.

That New Spanish Magic

Envinate

The wines of Envínate buzz with energy, capturing the terroir of their respective regions as if by magic. But it’s no trick to what makes these wines superb: it’s hard work in the vines and low intervention in the winery that result in such spellbinding cuvées.

The methods of this group of winemakers, friends Alfonso Torrente, José Ángel Martínez, Laura Ramos, and Roberto Santana, are low-intervention in the winery and ultra-traditional (read: minimalist) in the vineyards. The vineyards see no chemical treatments, the vines are grown according to near-ancient practices, the grapes are hand-harvested and foot-trodden, and the juice ferments with indigenous yeasts only.

Though less individually famous than the other leading figures in this new Spanish winemaking movement, such as Daniel Landi or Raúl Pérez, the impact of Envínate has been profound.
