Hundred Suns:

For the Love of Oregon

Both Renée Saint-Amour and Grant Coulter were raised to appreciate Oregon wines, despite hailing from out of state. Their mutual interest and love of adventure brought them to the Valley. Grant worked with Hamacher and was winemaker at Beaux Freres and Flâneur, before committing full time to their own label: Hundred Suns.

Hundred Suns was named for the number of days between flowering and harvest, their Pinots drink like a love letter to the Willamette Valley. These are unique, from an assortment of some of the most interesting vineyards in the Willamette Valley including one of our favorites, Bednarik. This vineyard flies under the radar a bit, but Ken Wright fans from the 90’s know the site well. Renée and Grant’s version offers beautiful, crunchy structure allied to a beguiling mixture of black cherry fruit and savory overtones.

Suns. This project represents one of the most exciting new labels in the Willamette Valley. Lovers of Oregon wines, and Beaux Freres in particular, should stock up now before these become hard to find.

“The 2022 vintage really turned out to be something special, ‘a classic Oregon Vintage’ bright, refreshing but full personality.” –Grant Coulter

Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Black cherries, a hint of red currant, and a dusting of dark chocolate. The first sip shows a center point of sweetness that is buttressed by ripe tannins and a hint of nori that give the wine a serious edge. With air and time, the sappy spicy notes that come from partial whole cluster fermentation resonate on the finish, making this wine that will drink well now and over the next 10 years. The Old Eight Cut refers to a diamond cut dating back to the 1400s using simple tools and few cuts to enhance the natural brilliance of the stone without disguising its true nature.”

Hundred Suns Bednarik Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $59 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“One of our perennial favorites, this old, own-rooted site shows aromas of sour cherry, hibiscus tea, and tangerine. The palate of pure red fruit and the spine of tannins from marine sedimentary soils make this wine both serious and playful. Rooted in marine sedimentary soil deep in the cool coastal foothills, this 6-acre, own-rooted vineyard was planted in 1988 by William Bednarik to Pommard and Wädenswil clones of Pinot Noir. A late flowering and the cool conditions of this special site led us to pick this fruit almost two weeks after all our other pinot sites. The extended hang time created a stunning wine with pure Mt. Hood strawberries, cranberry sauce, and fresh, silky tannins. Fermented with natural yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered.”

Hundred Suns Carson Phillips Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml $59 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Candied cherries and raspberry preserve mix it up with a crazy aroma of…gummy peach rings. Really. The first sip delivers cherries dusted in cocoa powder with fruit that is present and full, and it carries a beautiful acid streak that is born from this cool vineyard in the northwest corner of the Dundee Hills. Planted 23 years ago, this site is farmed sustainably without the use of synthetic chemicals or herbicides. Dry-farmed and deep-rooted, the vines express the intensity of the volcanic soils from which they draw their nutrients and water. A cool spring and late bud break quickly transitioned to warm weather. Persistent summer heat allowed us to harvest fully ripe fruit on September 17th. Fermented with natural yeast and 25% whole cluster, this gorgeous wine layers dark cherry, candied strawberries and a rich palate. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.”

Hundred Suns Lone Feather Vineyard Pinot Noir, McMinnville 2023 750ml $59 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Clinging to western reaches of the McMinnville AVA, this old, own-rooted site once again set a meager crop, but the resulting wine is incredible. Marionberry and dark blueberry fruits mingle with tart cherries. Naturally a high acid site, the deep crimson color is a visual cue to what lies beneath: ripe and sweet on the palette the tannins from these thick skinned, tiny berries give the wine the structure to hold it all together. This wine will drink well now and deep into the future. The Lone Feather Vineyard is planted on rocky basalt soils on the edge the McMinnville AVA. Cool, coastal breezes and rocky volcanic soil help to focus the deep flavors of these own rooted vines established in the late 1980’s. Under the stewardship of Warren and Jennifer Feather, this site is meticulously farmed with the goal of sustaining this legacy vineyard for years to come. The warm growing season in 2023 gifted tiny berries with deep concentration of dark fruit. Paired with the site’s natural acidity, this wine will continue to grow in complexity and be delicious for years to come.”

Kopke

Considered the oldest Port house, Kopke has been through adverse times in its nearly 400-year history, seeing dramatic shifts in the climate, swings in the popularity of Port, and the rise and fall of populist dictators. Through all of this, Kopke has been consistent in their commitment to making the greatest Tawny and Colheita (vintage Tawny) Port available.

The unbelievably youthful vintage Colheitas are perfect examples of how age adds concentration and depth, with the traditional Kopke freshness that keeps these so vibrant. These wines are aged for at least a decade at Kopke, longer than the minimum requirements. All of our selections will continue to show their highlights and develop rich spice and dried fruit characteristics for years to come.

The resulting Colheitas are lighter in style than a typical Vintage Port, offering a more refreshing alternative that aligns more closely with today’s popular preferences. Although typically served as dessert wines, these Colheitas pair well with decadent savory dishes and appetizers such as caramelized onion tartlets, pâtés, fine cheeses, and confit.

Wine Spectator 95 points

Kopke Colheita Tawny Port 1934 750ml $899 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 1934 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled March 2022 with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Of the many Sogevinus Tawnies that the producer showed over its various houses, this was the oldest and tasted like it. Yet, like all of the producer’s oldies, they do a great job in producing complexity without the fruit seeming too old. I’m told it is never topped off too. There are only about 450 liters left for the future. It is a bit darker, leaning a little more to molasses, but it’s surprisingly fresh for its age. It has fine concentration and an endless finish. It is certainly special, not automatically a lot better than, say, a 50 Year, but a very different experience.”

Kopke Colheita Tawny Port 2008 750ml $49 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Golden-brown colour, with reddish hues. Intense and rich on the nose, with aromas of syrup fruit well-matched with notes of spice and dried fruit. On the palate it is delicate, its sweetness perfectly matching its tannins and acidity, making it a balanced wine. A long and appealing finish. Served chilled, it reveals all its finesse and sophistication, especially when drunk with desserts made with caramel, dried fruit and spice, such as caramel fondant with apple and ginger jelly, tarte tatin, crème brulée and medium-strength cheeses. Best served at a temperature between 12 and 14°C.”

Kopke Vintage Port 2016 750ml $89 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 96 points
“This is a luscious wine, with tannins that are cushioned by the ripe plum and prune fruits. That doesn’t mean it is likely to develop too quickly, but is ready to take its time, bringing out the opulent character of the wine as well as its structure. Drink from 2028. -Roger Voss”

Calabretta Nerello Cappuccio Terre Siciliane IGT 2019 750ml $33 special, 13 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 89 points
“The 2019 Nerello Cappuccio is incredibly pretty, with a bouquet of musky cherry and raspberry complemented by stemmed roses and flowery undergrowth. This is silky yet lifted, leaning more toward the savory spectrum on the palate, as woodland berries mingle with saline-minerals under an air of inner florals. It’s a bit shorter than anticipated yet fresh, leaving nuances of waxy red fruits.”

Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany 2022 750ml $28 special, 23 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 92 points
“A well-balanced, seductive and lively red with aromas of forest berries, red currants, warm herbs and some crushed peppercorns. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Juicy berry character with a lift of spices bringing energy and vitality on the palate and onto the tactile finish.”

Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT, Tuscany 2017 750ml $159 special, 30 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional textural elegance and finesse. It is a positively stellar wine.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2023 750ml $28 special, 29 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 92 points
“This wine was bottled approximately one month before I tasted it in October and was set to hit the market in November 2024. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo shows a shiny ruby appearance and offers crunchy fruit flavors with blueberry and tart raspberry. Fruit is collected from the sites and the warmer microclimates that don’t end up in the Barbaresco program, and the wine sees a shorter maceration time, lasting 21 days.”

G. B. Burlotto ‘Viridis’ Langhe Sauvignon, Piedmont 2023 750ml $39 special, 33 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“In ancient Rome, viridis was the color of the dress of the Naiads, nymphs of fresh waters. Here, however, the noble vine of the Loire distills the salt and soul of the sea from the land of Langa, the fragrant trace of herbs and wildflowers, the fresh juice of sour fruits. It is a white that, evoking all that is green, fascinates and surprises, affects and quenches one’s thirst.”

Winery Note
“A wine originating from a field blend of white varieties mostly planted side by side, harvested and vinified together. A brilliant light-yellow hue is enriched with floral and fruity aromas alongside mineral aromas at the end. Dry, warm, soft and savory on the palate, with a pungent and balanced freshness.”

Vie di Romans ‘Piere’ Sauvignon Friuli Isonzo, Friuli-Venezia Giulia 2021 750ml $49 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 92 points
“The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Piere is a spice bomb, holding my attention firm with a blast of ground ginger, cardamom, flint stone and curry before arriving at dried nectarines. It’s luxuriously silky yet lifted in style, with cooling minerality and acidity that motivates its floral-laced green citrus and melon tones. For all of its intensity, the 2021 finishes crisp and with a classically dry feel, as savory herbal tones resonate on. There is so much pleasure in this upfront, fruit-focused, yet truly seductive Sauvignon.”

Vie di Romans ‘Piere’ Sauvignon Friuli Isonzo, Friuli-Venezia Giulia 2022 750ml $44.50 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 93 points
“The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Piere is wildly fresh, with a vivid blend of crushed nectarines and lime zest complemented by hints of rosemary and crushed stone. It’s silky smooth yet full of zesty tension, with masses of mineral-drenched green apples and hints of spice propelled by vibrant acidity. The 2022 leaves the palate staining in primary concentration, youthfully intense and gently tannic, leaving a spicy sensation that lingers on and on. The balance here is otherworldly, as is its drinkability factor.”

Vie di Romans ‘Vieris’ Sauvignon Friuli Isonzo, Friuli-Venezia Giulia 2021 750ml $44.50 special, 25 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 94+ points
“The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Vieris opens slowly in the glass, holding back in its youthful state, with hints of lemon oil, rosemary and wet stone accentuated by sweet spice. This is seamlessly silky, almost oily in feel, with sapid yellow citrus and savory herbal tones enriched by vibrant acidity. It finishes potent and spicy, leaving the palate saturated in an intense staining of primary concentration. The potential here is off the charts, but today, the Vieris is one of the most backward wines out of the 2021 portfolio.”

Bollinger La Grande Année Brut, Champagne 2015 1.5L $419 special, 2 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points
“Bollinger’s 2015 Brut Grand Année is an intriguing wine in that is clearly reflects the decision to pick on the later side in order to avoid vegetal notes derived from the mismatch of alcoholic and phenolic ripeness. “Balance was hard to achieve in 2015,” Chef de Cave Denis Bunner notes. “At 10% in sugar, the fruit was simply not ripe. We had to wait to reach the optimal window of ripeness.” Bunner also opted to increase the Chardonnay, so the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, as opposed to the more typical 70/30 blend, with more Verzenay than Aÿ in the Pinots. Dried citrus peel, sage, menthol, sage, tangerine peel and spice build with some coaxing. Light tropical overtones develop with aeration. There’s real density and textural richness here. This will be a fascinating vintage to follow. Stylistically, it is the complete opposite from the much more linear 2014 that precedes it. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2023. Drink: 2028-2040.”

Bérêche et Fils Reflet d’Antan Brut, Champagne NV (2018-base) 1.5L $849 special, 1 magnum in stock now
Importer Note
“Arguably the most original of all in this lineup of singular Champagnes is the Reflet d’Antan, one-third each of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, drawn from a perpetual reserve of 600-liter barrels begun in 1985 by Raphae¨l’s and Vincent’s father, Jean- Pierre.”

Billecart-Salmon ‘Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon’ Brut Rosé Millésime, Champagne 2012 1.5L $469 special, 1 magnum in stock now
Yohan Castaing-Wine Advocate 97 points
“A blend of 45% Pinot Noir and 55% Chardonnay, the 2012 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon is a real success, wafting from the glass with aromas of red berries, rose, peony, orange blood and dried flowers. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and broad, it’s dense and deep with a multidimensional core of fruit, racy acids and a textural structure, concluding with a long, delicate, mouthwatering finish. This is one of the finest rosé I’ve tasted at this address. Kudos! Drink: 2024-2054.”

Benoît Déhu ‘La Rue des Noyers’, Champagne NV (2016-base) 1.5L $269 special, 6 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“Cuvée La Rue des Noyers Sparkling White) The NV (2016) Cuvée La Rue des Noyers, 100% Meunier, is bright, effusive and full of energy. In 2016, the Rue des Noyers is not as overt as it can be, but instead makes its case with energy and verve more than sheer power. I find it especially distinctive and elegant. Exotic dried flowers, ginger, apricot and spice linger. There is so much to like, and also so much to look forward to as the 2016 develops in the cellar. No dosage. Disgorged: May, 2021. (Drink between 2022-2030).”
