Charles Smith K Vintners CasaSmith Jack’s Vineyard Barbera, Walla Walla Valley 2012 750ML ($39.95) Buy Now: $33 special

Italian taste meets Washington muscle. Winemaker Charles Smith took Piedmont’s Barbera grape and made it boldly American in this wine. Brooding, deeply pigmented, and stuffed full of ripe red fruit, earth, and roses, the 2012 Jack’s Vineyard Barbera is almost a meal in itself. Aged 26 months on the lees in 40% new French oak: here’s a big Washington wine, from the rocky Walla Walla Valley, that speaks Italian, with an American accent. Any fan of Washington wine should taste this ode to Italia. – DanielRead the rest

sangTuscany’s famous grape meets Washington’s Wahluke Slope: Casa Smith Sangiovese is big enough to bridge continents, and flavorful enough to satisfy Old and New World tastes. Whole cluster fermentation breeds a wine with backbone, and 12 months in barrel (35% new oak) gives added depth and finesse to this Italian/Washingtonian stallion. Rich notes of cherry and earth carry across smooth tannins and just enough acidity, proving that Italy’s best grapes make for happy immigrants to the Evergreen State. DanielRead the rest

Wine of the Day: Owen Roe Chapel Block Syrah 2013 5-24-16

owenroesrahOwen Roe Red Willow Vineyard Chapel Block Syrah, Yakima Valley 2013 750ML ($59.95) Buy Now: $49 special

This new vintage of the Chapel Block Syrah from the Red Willow vineyard shows poise and balance.  There are overtones of dark chocolate and dark roast coffee layered with sweet spices and a hint of new leather on the finish.  Unabashedly New World, the palate offers ripe berry and floral notes with a lingering chocolate taste.  It has an excellent grippy texture to keep the rich body in check.  I would cellar for at least 2-3 years before opening, though ideally this baby could go for 7-10.  -Suzy

Winery note: “Aged in 44% new oak (100% French) for nearly 14 months.  The blend is comprised of 100% Red Willow Syrah from both East and West facing slopes, from the Yakima Valley AVA.”… Read the rest
