The nose consists of ash, green pepper, blackcurrant and hints of sour cherry. Delivering full-bodied flavor in the mouth, with sour cherry especially prominent on the palate, it grows more vigorous and light-footed as it goes on with good freshness and a hint of chalk. The alcohol lends structure. The 2020 is an unusual wine in that it’s both ripe and very fresh. Drink: 2022-2034.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96-98 points “The 2019 Jesuitengarten GG displays an intense lemon color and opens with a rich, intense and refreshing bouquet of lemon oil intermixed with vanilla and yeasty aromas and notes of crushed stones and blossoming flowers. It is less fruity and aromatic than the Pechstein and even the Kirchenstück but subtle and very complex at the same time. Full-bodied, fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a crystalline, piquant and firmly structured yet highly refined Jesuitengarten with density, power, tension and a persistent tropical stone fruit aroma—think of mangos but also passion fruit and even ripe peaches. It is very salty and has a serious, very sustainable finish. A spectacular GG for von Wining yet leaner and tighter than the famous neighbors from the Pechstein and Kirchenstück. The finish is not just salty but also enormously long and vibrating.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95-96 points “The 2021 Kalkofen Riesling trocken VDP. Grosse Lage comes from the plateau above Deidesheim and owes its density and complexity to 65-year-old vines growing on sandstone and limestone. The must is fermented spontaneously in 500-liter oak barrels, and the wine is maturing on the lees. The brilliantly clear and radiant sample opens with a deep, intense and elegant, still oaky but complex and fruit-intense bouquet that gives rise to the highest hopes. Rich and intense but also fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, mineral and textured Kalkofen that obviously wants to be a Meursault or Montrachet yet with the weapons of Riesling and also Buntsandstein. Whatever it is, this is an excellent and promising Kalkofen whose development and capacity I’d love to follow for at least a decade. The wine is dense and tight but also fresh and juicy and provided with very fine tannins and sustainable mineral acidity. Highly promising indeed. Tasted as a barrel sample at the domaine in Deidesheim in November 2022.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93-95 points “The 2021 Kieselberg Riesling trocken VDP. Grosse Lage comes from a plateau above Deidesheim with sandstone and limestone in the soil. Fermented spontaneously in 500-liter oak vats and still maturing in them, the barrel sample shows a clear, elegant and savory nose of bright and ripe fruit aromas intertwined with oaky and yeasty notes. Creamy textured and very elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight and saline-finishing Riesling with fine and grippy tannins and lingering salinity and mineral tension. It’s still very young but worthy to be cellared for at least a decade. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. To be released sometime next year.”

The nose shows a brilliantly clear, fresh and flinty, very elegant GG with herbal and soil-driven, flinty-scented intensity and the coolish aromas of slow-ripening Riesling. Very elegant and refined on the palate, this is a round, lush and salty-savory Riesling classic that reveals a long, tight, saline and finely grippy finish. As per the vintage, this is a rather lean, straightforward but tensioned Riesling that will show its class in the years to come. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in November 2022. To be released sometime next year.”

Fermented spontaneously in 500-liter-oak barrels and aged on the lees for 1.5 years, the wine opens with a noble, intense and elegant bouquet with ripe citrus aromas and flinty notes. The wine is saline, fresh and vital, intense and linear and carried by fine acidity and delicate citrus aromas to a long and aromatic, very stimulating and lemony finish. It has 13% stated alcohol and lots of energy and mineral tension. Natural cork.”

Full-bodied, intense and fresh on the palate, this full-bodied, creamy-textured yet also vital and elegant Riesling is still reminiscent of von Winning’s Sauvignon Blanc 500 in terms of style. In any case, it’s a peculiar Ungeheuer in the Pfalz context due to the prominent use of oak. The astringency, however, is positive, and the wine will probably benefit from bottle age. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2024.”

Leonetti
 
Although Cayuse is probably the first name that comes to mind when discussing rare, cult Walla Walla wines, Leonetti is the harder-to-source prize. The produce supremely polished Bordeaux-inspired reds that dazzle professional reviewers every vintages. These elegant wines are reference point releases not to be missed.
 
There just isn’t much wine available (unless you like paying restaurant markups) and the wines are held in incredibly high esteem. The Cabernet is fantastic, the Merlot reminds you why people fell in love with the grape in the first place. Leonetti seems to have a magic touch. Jump on this now if you’re interested.

Jeb Dunnuck 97+ points “The classic 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from this reference point estate checks in as 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Malbec raised 22 months in once-filled oak and neutral oval botti. Its vivid purple hue is followed by a perfumed, youthful bouquet of cassis and blue fruits that give way to more graphite, chalky minerality, violets, and spicy oak. It’s deep, rich, and medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a gorgeous mid-palate, ripe, building, polished tannins, and fabulous length on the finish. This absolutely brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be forgotten for 2-4 years and will evolve gracefully over the following two decades. It’s another sensational wine from the talents of Chris Figgins.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 96 points “The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is intense, smoldering up with a dark blend of blackcurrants, crushed rocks, hints of graphite and sage. This is cool-toned and crisp, with crunchy red and black fruits that cascade across the palate as a saturation of primary concentration adds inner tension. A web of finegrained tannins penetrates deeply, yet the 2021 maintains a fresh persona, tapering off long, staining and truly classic. A mineral tinge lingers on the finish.”

Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “All Merlot aged in once-filled and neutral oak, the 2022 Merlot sports a vivid ruby/purple hue as well as solid aromatics of ripe black cherries, cedary herbs, dried flowers, and a kiss of background oak. It’s medium to full-bodied, has a pure, elegant mouthfeel, polished tannins, and a great finish. It will keep from 10-12 years with ease.”
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 93+ points “Deeply colored and extracted for a Merlot, the 2022 Walla Walla Merlot displays mocha notes with plum and blackberry compote with soft notions of brown baking spices that sway from the glass with a firm, mineral essence. Full-bodied, the palate is still tight with firm,. gripping tannins that will release with additional years in the cellar yet will remain food-friendly for the next decade. The wine spent 15 months in a mix of new and used French oak and neutral botti. 23,448 bottles were made.”

Cascina delle Rose
 
The Cascina delle Rose estate in Barbaresco crafts charming and soulful wines that are easy to love, drink, and enjoy. To be sure, the wines aren’t for everyone, especially if power and heft are your preferences. These lean, well, lean, but don’t scrimp on the aromatic complexity or beauty.
 
The winemaking here is extremely traditional, and the vineyard management fully organic. These are wines that are striving for beauty and achieve it without sacrificing their drinkability and the ability to satisfy. They offer soaring aromatics and beautiful textures—and are surprisingly age-worthy for such ethereal bottlings.
 
The Rizzolio family purchased the estate in the 1940s, but didn’t produce commercial releases until the 1980s when the vines were mature enough to offer consist and complex crops. Today, the estate is led by Giovanna Rizzolio alongside her partner, Italo Sobrino, and their sons, Riccardo and Davide.
 
As with most of the Piemonte, Cascina delle Rose has excelled in recent vintages, producing some of the best wines in the history of the winery. Lovers of boutique Piedmontese producers take note—this is a true family estate doing all the right things.

Winery Note “Arneis; 100% stainless steel. Mun Crü – in Piedmontese dialect, literally “raw bricks” – is the name that has always been used to indicate this particular area of Neive. As the production is very limited, it is always offered first to our historical customers. Sensory notes: Bright and intense yellow, with golden reflections. Elegant floral notes, jasmine, hints of sweet citrus peel, white peach and acacia honey. Intriguing structure, full of flavors. Round and balanced, savory and with a long finish.”

Importer Note “This rosé is vinified partially by direct press and partially by ‘saignée’, the juice is naturally clarified after a cold ‘débourbage’ of 24 hours, the wine ferments at temperature that never exceeds 16 degrees Celsius and then it is aged on the fine lees for four to six months before bottling. It is a blend of 50% Cinsault, 40% Grenache and 10% Syrah, all of which is planted to soils of clay, limestone and silex. Production is limited: we import approximately 6,000 bottles per annum for the US market.”

Importer Note “Around 50% Mourvèdre, 25% Cinsault and 25% Grenache, from vines planted on southwest facing hillsides, with clay/limestone soil. The grapes are hand-harvested, after which the bunches are cooled down to 50C for a two day cold soak in order to extract fruit, color and aromatics. The juice is then racked off and the grapes are pressed to stainless steel tanks. 10% of the wine is saignée, the rest come from grapes treated as for making white wine.”

Last year, they introduced some white Pardilla grapes in the blend that seem to have given it freshness and a kick in the palate, which is Mediterranean, with good freshness and a balanced mouthfeel. 67,000 bottles and 600 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2024.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94-96 points “I tasted a very promising barrel sample of the 2023 Lousas Viñas de Aldea, cropped from a more Atlantic, cooler and rainier year (especially when compared with the super warm and dry 2022). Right now, it’s super primary (the blend will have some 40% to 45% wine from concrete), and they are slowly introducing larger oak foudres (3,000 liters) and lowering the impact of the oak in the wine. This has very good freshness, purity and elegance, reminiscent of past vintages like 2021 or 2016. It has terrific balance. There will be around 32,000 bottles that should be filled in November 2024.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 99 points “It’s always an exciting moment tasting a new vintage of the wine from one of the most beautiful vineyards in Montsant, and the 2019 Espectacle del Montsant didn’t disappoint. It’s always Mediterranean, heady and ripe, decadent and hedonistic. 2019 was a warm and quite classical vintage in the zone, with good ripeness (the wine’s label lists 15.5% alcohol), and the wine is hedonistic, nuanced and complex, with very good acidity, which is one of the characteristics that makes this vintage so complete. Despite everything, the wine is medium to full-bodied and comes through as perfumed and ethereal. They do long macerations and long aging in foudre. 2019 is a very serious vintage for this wine; it’s a little closed and needs time in the glass, and it’s tight and seamless, a little austere for what this wine usually is. This is truly spectacular.”

All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It’s harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins. 110,000 bottles were filled in July 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The estate red 2016 Reserva comes from a late growing season and was produced with local varieties like Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and others from their 86 hectares of vineyards at 590 to 805 meters in altitude on limestone, sandstone and marl soils. The grapes were picked late with good ripeness and health and fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel and open-top oak vats and then matured in oak containers of different sizes for 20 to 21 months. These are more classical wines, with a more evolved nose, with high ripeness and some balsamic and medicinal notes. It has a dusty palate with Nebbiolo-like tannins. 300,000 bottles and 8,200 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2019.”

They produced more or less the same amount as in previous years, some 18 barriques; but in 2021, they introduced foudres for part of the wine, and in this first year, the foudre was newer (they used it to ferment a white before). They also started renewing their barrels, so the wines show a little more oak than usual. It has moderate alcohol and mellow acidity, and it seems like the longer cycle and the slow ripening burned some acidity.”

The 2018 Corral de los Altos is Zorzal’s own interpretation of a 45-year-old plot of 2.1 hectares of Garnacha planted on a north-facing stony part of the village. The grapes fermented in stainless steel with some 25% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in seven used (second and third use) 500-liter oak barrels. This has contained ripeness and a medium to full-bodied palate with the classical chalky tannins and texture from the limestone-rich soils and the length and tastiness they provide.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “Bollinger’s 2015 Brut Grand Année is an intriguing wine in that is clearly reflects the decision to pick on the later side in order to avoid vegetal notes derived from the mismatch of alcoholic and phenolic ripeness. “Balance was hard to achieve in 2015,” Chef de Cave Denis Bunner notes. “At 10% in sugar, the fruit was simply not ripe. We had to wait to reach the optimal window of ripeness.” Bunner also opted to increase the Chardonnay, so the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, as opposed to the more typical 70/30 blend, with more Verzenay than Aÿ in the Pinots. Dried citrus peel, sage, menthol, sage, tangerine peel and spice build with some coaxing. Light tropical overtones develop with aeration. There’s real density and textural richness here. This will be a fascinating vintage to follow. Stylistically, it is the complete opposite from the much more linear 2014 that precedes it. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2023. Drink: 2028-2040.”

Light yellow in color, it offers a lovely mix of ripe peach, mango and honeysuckle on the nose. The major difference is the oak; in 2018 it was American, whereas the oak in 2019 is French. The differences were subtle, but with time in the glass the 2019 displayed more finesse and complexity. It comes across as a pretty, elegant Malbec with spiced dark plum fruit and baking spice flavors, refined, smooth tannin and light oak. Overall, the 2019 has more polish and a potential to develop with short term cellaring.”

To distinguish it from the others, the winery went with the “Candives” name, said to be an alternate name for Syrah used in the tiny village of Chavanay in the Northern Rhone Valley. As fine as the other 2018s are, this is so dark, dense, and dramatic that the special name is certainly merited. Loaded with ripe black fruit, it also has layers of spice, hints of clove and violets, light leather, toast, and pepper that evolve in the glass. Ultra smooth and seamless, it is beautiful now but will also bring rewards with cellaring.”

After a cold soak and long fermentation, it was aged 19 months in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. As signaled by the dark purple color, this is a sturdy Syrah built for the long haul. As it sits in the glass it eventually unwinds to reveal aromas of ripe dark plum and blackberry with earthy, gamey background notes. As it continues to evolve, the flavors are focused on black fruit with clove and earthy spice presented in a medium full-bodied style. The mouthfeel is plush and the full throttle ripeness is nicely controlled by light tannin. Will age well for at least 5 years. The winery’s 2018 B-42 Syrah is made in a more accessible, ripe fruit-filled pretty style and is an excellent value. “B-42″ references the winemaking facility.”

Vie di Romans is one of the flagship wineries of Friuli—arguably the greatest white-wine producing region in Italy. Named for the ancient Roman road that defines one of their vineyards, they sit in the prestigious Isonzo section of the region, with a warmer micro-climate that makes developing powerful, rich whites easier.
 
Those whites are held back an extra year before release and age beautifully—a tribute to the fine balance between power and minerality that makes these some of the most intriguing, food-friendly bottles around.
 
They craft lush Chardonnays and complex Sauvignon Blancs. Their indigenous whites include the ‘Dolée’ Friulano and the Flors di Uis blend. The Dolée has fascinating aromatics of green herbs and ripe citrus, with a rich and decedent body. The Flors du Uis is a blend of Malvasia Istriana, Riesling (referred to as “Rhein Riesling”), and Friulano. This wine is exotic and aromatic, with beautiful richness and a dry finish.
 
Given the quality of the wines, we always expect their prices to be higher—but Friuli remains one of the last great bargains for exceptional bottles. If you’re a drinker of Sancerre, top-end California Chardonnay, or white Burgundy, you owe it to yourself to stock your cellar with these.

The palate is rich and powerful, firmly structured, very tight and still astringent on the finish, but there is so much finesse paired with power, concentration and fruit, which give the V6 a promising future. The wine just starts a bit slowly (like a rocket, which is pictured on the label), but it will most probably go very steep in a couple of years. I have ever had this cuvée before, so I can only guess, though.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2022 Laurel has the grapes from the younger vines but still not the ones from Manyetes that will contribute to this wine in 2023 for the first time. This is quite aromatic, young tender and peachy, attractive. She finds this to be a classical vintage, balanced and ripe without excess, and the tannins are polished and elegant. In 2022, they used a little less Cabernet, so the wine is mostly Garnacha, with almost 20% Syrah and perhaps 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It matured mostly in concrete, oak vats and some 30 barrels, but some 20% of the volume matured in amphorae. She’s not crazy about amphorae; she finds that they close the wines. It’s medium-bodied, has a fine texture and feels elegant and light with a lot of finesse. She doesn’t want too long macerations with the grapes from the younger vines, but it has clout. It comes in at 15% alcohol, has very fine tannins and comes through as balanced and civilized, quite approachable already with mellow acidity. She’s very careful that the tannins don’t have too much astringency. 23,000 bottles were filled in May 2024. Tasted 10 months after bottling, the wine is very drinkable. This is a young wine that is ever changing, with the new vines, and it will change even more in the coming years.”

Cristom is one of the hallowed names in Oregon. Since their inception in 1993, they’ve crafted reference point wines from their beautiful estate vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills. Much of the credit for their success goes to their vineyards—located just below Bethel Heights and Temperance Hill, truly Cristom is an American Grand Cru.
 
The rest of the credit goes to Steve Doerner, their winemaker since the beginning, who made a name for Calera in the ’80s before moving to Oregon and becoming a local legend. These are wines that have powerful personalities allied to a Burgundian sense of proportion and savor. Doerner loves to use a lot of whole clusters in fermentations and so the wines always have a grip and earthiness that grounds their deep fruit and rich textures.

Chardonnay was planted in the lower part of this site which was first planted back in 1993. It is nicely concentrated but also very nicely poised. Kumquat rind, Japanese pear and honeydew melon flavors combine with shades of hazelnut topped shortbread on the palate. Only 100 cases made of this brilliant Chardonnay.”

Medium to full-bodied, with great energy, it’s lush up front but has a great tension-driven core, with a touch of pithy texture and a bit of yellow floral tone on the finish. It’s going to drink well over the next 8-10 years.”

The site is usually picked a touch on the earlier side to harness the tannins of the Pinot Noir at this eastern-aspect location. Black florals and seaweed combine with shades of black licorice on the nose. The palate is plush and refined with serious weight and tension. Rich and refined, with serious texture and mouth-watering acidity, this really needs another year of bottle age to come together–but you can see the potential!”

This wine comes from the northern end at the Cristom Estate that was fist planted back in 2014. The nose is alluring with beautiful violets, menthol, wild blackberry and suggestions of cardamom. The palate is plush and soft with a refiled texture. Strangely this powerful wine is the most evolved of the single vineyards. A total stunner, enjoy over the next twenty years.”

Distinct and precise, the perfumed palate follows with a sweetness of strawberry gracefully enfolded in silky tannins. Tangy minerals and citrussy acidity amplify lightness and brightness.
