Italy’s Sicily seems to have it all for wine: fun and fruity Frappato, serious and volcanic-influenced Nerellos from the slopes of Mount Etna, iconic dessert wines, and just about everything in between. With the recent, island-wide push for quality all across the price spectrum, there has never been a better time to explore these wines.
 
For lovers of volcanic-influenced wines, Sicily’s Mount Etna is a cherished place. Home to the Burgundy-esque varieties of Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, these are gorgeous, terroir-driven wines. The two grapes offer layers of spice and high acidity, partly due to being grown on the highest vineyards in all of Europe.
 
One of the finest producers on this volcano is Terre Nere, a domain that offers multiple single-vineyard wines. We have its proprietor, Marc De Grazia, to thank for bringing international attention to this stunning region. He founded Tenuta delle Terre Nere over twenty years ago after falling in love with the unique terroir created (and continually recreated) by the still-active volcano.
 
Calabretta is also one of our favorites, if tragically overlooked. Their commitment to chemical free farming, stewarding old vines, and meticulous winemaking is evident in every bottle of wine they craft from grapes grown along the slopes of Mount Etna. The wines have a rustic and savory feel that evokes a perfectly-cellared Pinot Noir. The high elevation, intense sunshine and marginal soils create incredible wines filled to the brim with flavor.
 
Those looking for serious options outside of Mount Etna should look to the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG. This appellation marries the dark fruit and earth of Nero d’Avola with the pretty, red-toned flavors of Frappato. The results show intriguing combinations of lifted acidity and fruit with a rich, savory backbone.

Instead, the 2016 seems to glide effortlessly across the palate, yet what it leaves behind is a saturation of primary fruit and mineral tones, as well as silky tannins that penetrate deeply. The Serra della Contessa finishes structured yet long and unexpectedly fresh, with balsam herbs and a touch of salted licorice that slowly fades. This Etna Rosso is a powerhouse, but it is in need of cellaring to reveal all of its charms.”

Then similar flavors to the aromas lifted by juicy, harmonious acidity. Finishes very long and suave with saline nuances and repeating notes of raisins. Lovely, light on its feet dessert wine that seems less sweet than it really is thanks to its piercing acidity. One of the best sweet wines I have tasted so far this year. This is a blend of air-dried Nero d’Avola and Perricone aged in wood barrels for seven months and then twelve months in bottle prior to going on sale.”

The wine is racy but beautifully playful on the bone-dry tasting palate and leaves a superbly feel of menthol in the long finish. 2033-2048.”

David Schildknecht-Vinous 90 points “Pear, apple, quince, white currant and lime signal on the nose that this wine originated with crunchier and higher-acid Riesling berries than did the corresponding Kabinett feinherb. That is confirmed by a bright, tangy palate impression, though buoyancy is accompanied by quite pronounced sweetness, which generates a bit of edgy tension with the wine’s tart and tangy aspects. A lovely thread of honeysuckle perfume runs through this whole performance. And the aforementioned tension proves reasonably productive, inasmuch as the lightly sweet-sour finish is invigoratingly nippy in its evocations of apple skin and currant seeds. It’s also lusciously fruity and admirably clear. You could certainly mount a convincing case that this wine is Spätlese-typical, but then, that’s true about a great many vintage 2018 Rieslings that are labeled “Kabinett,” including some truly delicious ones. (Drink between 2020-2030).”

The bouquet is the epitome of elegance, wafting from the glass in a blend of pear, apple, strawberry chiffon, bee pollen, lovely minerality, lime blossoms and hints of the honeycomb to come with bottle age. On the palate the wine is pure, bright and fullish, with lovely filigree and focus, a fine core, good mineral undertow and a long, nascently complex and simply superb finish. This is not flashy, but the one more pays attention to it, the further one is drawn into its bottomless sense of beauty. 2026-2065. 94.”

Smells amazing, cooling blueberries with fragrant blackcurrants, edges of florality – totally inviting scents. Full and filling in the mouth, this is ample with such a layered effect, super vertical and elongated. Tight and a little tense but it really works – such balance between black fruit, dried herbs, high acidity and a profound structure. Refined and beautifully presented. So much life, so much energy – this is pure class. A wine you don’t want to put down. Feels hands off despite such concentration and power. Ends salty with sticky liquorice, mint and cooling wet stones. You could definitely drink this now but it will age too! 1% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot complete the blend. One of the final few vintages with Rodrigo Soto at the helm – he stepped down last year to concentrate on his family project Far Mountain in Sonoma Valley which is worth following. Now in bottle, it has a vivacious, quite floral, almost Margaux-like bouquet that bursts from the glass, featuring raspberry, rooibos and black currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with good concentration, a little spicier than I remember and a little softer in the finish, yet with good length and admirable harmony. It should drink nicely after a couple of years. 14.3% alcohol.”

The medium-bodied palate is fresh, vibrant and grippy, with slightly chalky tannins and a saline, persistent finish. Quite structured and broody, this Moulis deserves ample time in bottle.”

It has a very focused bouquet of black fruit infused with graphite/pencil lead scents, a touch of brine emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture that belies a firm backbone. Quite stern at the moment – maybe it’s just closed up as the winter descends – but I admire its marine-tinged finish. Crafted from Clairette planted in 2016 in the lieu-dit Hominis Fides on sandy, chalky soils, it was vinified and matured for 10 months on the lees. Kudos.”

On a recent trip to Germany, I had few priorities beyond being able to visit the Nahe and see first-hand the small but wondrous region that is producing some of the country’s finest wines. Crafting a tasting schedule is never easy, and one is always forced to make hard decisions on which vintners to visit and which to reserve for a future date. Emrich-Schönleber was at the very top of my list.

The little town of Monzingen is tucked right alongside the Highway 41 as you cruise your way through the Nahe and stay tight to the river itself. It’s not flashy, it doesn’t boast immense architecture or wave bright signs in order to make you pull off the road and pull our your tourist dollars. It rests peacefully…quiet streets drawing the knowledgeable inward toward a stately but discreet winery lurking a few blocks down the lane. Could this really be the source of some of the finest dry Riesling on the planet? Well, one afternoon tasting with Frank Schönleber had me convinced that these might be some of the finest dry white wines period…..white burgundy be damned.

It’s hard to convey precisely just how good the wines are coming out of this estate. The Schönleber family has been crafting Rieslings of remarkable purity and poise with meticulous vineyard work and an unwavering commitment to expressing the character of their steep, slate- and quartzite-laced slopes. The wines, shaped by the confluence of cool nights, stony soils, and restrained cellar work, are paragons of clarity—each bottling a vivid snapshot of place.

The heart of the estate lies in two of Germany’s greatest vineyards: Monzinger Halenberg and Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen. Though neighboring sites, they produce profoundly different wines. Halenberg, with its blue slate and quartzite, gives Rieslings of depth and density—structured, powerful, and etched with saline minerality. These wines are built for the long haul, often taut and reserved in youth before unfurling with age into layers of stone fruit, herbs, and smoky complexity. Frühlingsplätzchen, by contrast, lives up to its name (“little place of spring”) with more open, floral aromatics, supple texture, and a sense of joyful lift.

Under the guidance of Werner and Frank Schönleber, the estate has achieved a reputation for near-perfect balance. Every step in the vineyard and cellar reflects an obsession with precision—from hand harvesting at peak ripeness to minimal intervention in fermentation. The resulting wines are seamless: crystalline fruit, lightning-bright acidity, and a minerality that hums rather than shouts. In dry form (GG bottlings), the wines show laser focus and quiet intensity; in off-dry and sweet styles, they radiate charm and purity without a hint of heaviness.

The 2022 and 2023 vintages in particular have underscored the estate’s mastery of balance. Even in warmer years, the Schönlebers manage to preserve extraordinary freshness, capturing that elusive interplay of ripeness and restraint. Each bottle feels alive—brimming with tension and energy that only the Nahe’s unique geology can provide. The Blood Lust is Upon Us!
 
Red Zinfandels are dense, succulent reds oozing with spicy flavor and bold, jammy fruit. Despite its Transylvanian, sorry, Croatian roots, this devastatingly dark and tempting grape might as well be considered a Californian variety – it certainly boasts an impressive number of ancient vines. Plantings date back over 150 years, with some of these timeless vines still in production. Additional plantings began in earnest in the 1970s when an off-dry rosé style known as “blush” or “white Zinfandel” exploded in popularity.
 
We have those 1970s plantings to thank for why dry red Zins are so delicious yet still affordable. Dozens of heritage sites are still producing, preventing scarcity from inflating prices. Those roughly 50-year-old vines offer concentration and complexity not found in young vine plantings.

Winery Note “In the spring of 2012, our friends Tegan and Olivia Passalacqua purchased an incredible old vineyard east of Lodi in the tiny town of Victor, California named Kirschenmann. The site is located on an oxbow of the Mokelumne River, which over centuries has deposited loads of fine, sandy, granitic loam from erosion of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the East. The vineyard was planted in 1915 on its own roots and is primarily Zinfandel, with a little Carignane, Cinsault and Mondeuse Noir spread throughout the block. The old, twisted, dry-farmed vines are thriving under the watchful eye of Tegan, one of the foremost experts on old vines in California. Tegan also produces his own wine under the Sandlands label and is the current winemaker for Turley Vineyards in Napa. We are lucky to be offered one ton of this fruit per year allowing us to vinify just 2-3 barrels annually.”
