Emrich-Schönleber
On a recent trip to Germany, I had few priorities beyond being able to visit the Nahe and see first-hand the small but wondrous region that is producing some of the country’s finest wines. Crafting a tasting schedule is never easy, and one is always forced to make hard decisions on which vintners to visit and which to reserve for a future date. Emrich-Schönleber was at the very top of my list.
The little town of Monzingen is tucked right alongside the Highway 41 as you cruise your way through the Nahe and stay tight to the river itself. It’s not flashy, it doesn’t boast immense architecture or wave bright signs in order to make you pull off the road and pull our your tourist dollars. It rests peacefully…quiet streets drawing the knowledgeable inward toward a stately but discreet winery lurking a few blocks down the lane. Could this really be the source of some of the finest dry Riesling on the planet? Well, one afternoon tasting with Frank Schönleber had me convinced that these might be some of the finest dry white wines period…..white burgundy be damned.
It’s hard to convey precisely just how good the wines are coming out of this estate. The Schönleber family has been crafting Rieslings of remarkable purity and poise with meticulous vineyard work and an unwavering commitment to expressing the character of their steep, slate- and quartzite-laced slopes. The wines, shaped by the confluence of cool nights, stony soils, and restrained cellar work, are paragons of clarity—each bottling a vivid snapshot of place.
The heart of the estate lies in two of Germany’s greatest vineyards: Monzinger Halenberg and Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen. Though neighboring sites, they produce profoundly different wines. Halenberg, with its blue slate and quartzite, gives Rieslings of depth and density—structured, powerful, and etched with saline minerality. These wines are built for the long haul, often taut and reserved in youth before unfurling with age into layers of stone fruit, herbs, and smoky complexity. Frühlingsplätzchen, by contrast, lives up to its name (“little place of spring”) with more open, floral aromatics, supple texture, and a sense of joyful lift.
Under the guidance of Werner and Frank Schönleber, the estate has achieved a reputation for near-perfect balance. Every step in the vineyard and cellar reflects an obsession with precision—from hand harvesting at peak ripeness to minimal intervention in fermentation. The resulting wines are seamless: crystalline fruit, lightning-bright acidity, and a minerality that hums rather than shouts. In dry form (GG bottlings), the wines show laser focus and quiet intensity; in off-dry and sweet styles, they radiate charm and purity without a hint of heaviness.
The 2022 and 2023 vintages in particular have underscored the estate’s mastery of balance. Even in warmer years, the Schönlebers manage to preserve extraordinary freshness, capturing that elusive interplay of ripeness and restraint. Each bottle feels alive—brimming with tension and energy that only the Nahe’s unique geology can provide. Collectors and newcomers alike should pay close attention: these wines remain some of the most underpriced among Germany’s elite.

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 92 points “Still very youthful with plenty of leesy character and a touch of flint, this is very mineral for an entry-level dry riesling. A wide spectrum of red-apple, white-peach andmandarin-orange aromas on the sleek, medium-bodied palate. With aeration some floral nuances develop. Long, focused, stony finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Halgans Riesling Trocken 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off, $40.05 at 10% off, and $37.82 at 15% off, 10 bottles in stock now

Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off, $80.10 at 10% off, and $75.65 at 15% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 95 points “Complex nose of pink and yellow grapefruit, peach and spring flowers. A super-elegant, dry Nahe riesling that marries plenty of juicy fruit with excellent concentration and vibrant minerality that leaps out at you. A slew of wild-berry and rose-hip character adds to the excitement at the dangerously crisp, wet-stone finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.”
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off, $107.10 at 10% off, and $101.15 at 15% off, 5 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points “The gigantic smoky and crushed rock nose of this astonishing dry riesling is an announcement of intent and determination. Incredibly complex candied and fresh citrus fruit slowly emerges from within this masterpiece, but the whole composition never changes its fundamental shape or direction. Either you’re strong enough for this radical wine, or it’s stronger than you. Drink from release.”
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off, $80.10 at 10% off, and $75.65 at 15% off, 7 bottles in stock now

Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 93-95 points “The 2022 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs comes with a timid nose. A subtle tropical top note and a serene aroma of iced mint appear teasingly, captivating in its shimmering and subtle aromatic spectrum. The palate has this cool aspect, too. Freshness is buffered by a gentle yeasty creaminess that verges into a soft white citrus pith. The 2022 is smooth, slender, elegant, beautifully textured and vivid. The finish is incisive and elegant, with lasting lemon length. (Bone-dry).”

James Suckling 95 points “The aroma of this wine is like a beautifully ripe white peach, but its freshness is closer to that of an Amalfi lemon. Very crystalline and pure, with terrific mineral acidity that drives it over the medium-bodied palate at a very brisk clip. I love the zestiness and succulence at the bold and subtle finish. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Riesling Kabinett 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off, $28.71 at 10% off, and $27.11 at 15% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “Predominantly from a late-ripening plot of the Niederberg, the 2020 Monzinger Riesling Kabinett is clear, bright, fresh and piquant on the flinty, attractively reductive and finely fruity nose. Piquant and fresh on the palate, this is a bright, lush and slatey, crystalline Riesling with a stimulatingly salty and piquant finish. Absolutely fabulous. 9% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021.”
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Spätlese 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off, $37.71 at 10% off, and $35.61 at 15% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 98 points “A giant Spätlese that’s packed to the gills with peach and berryfruit, salty minerality and supernaturally vibrant acidity. Such complexity that it’s hard to express in such a string of adjectives. Breathtaking freshness at the finish. Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Auslese 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $66, that’s $62.70 at 5% of, $59.40 at 10% off, and $56.10 at 15% off, 20 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 98 points “Very intense, candied yellow-grapefruit nose. Super-concentrated, but the most important thing about this Auslese is the incredibly tight focus on the palate and the purity of the dried apricot and mango. Super-succulent and vibrant finish that doesn’t want to stop. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2018 375ml Was $299, Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off, $224.10 at 10% off, and $254.15 at 15% off, 14 half-bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht-Vinous 97 points “Peach jam and orange marmalade are prominent in the bittersweet, cooked-fruit but zesty personality of this super-concentrate from a mere hundred liters’ worth of tightly shriveled berries gathered over an extended period and pressed with great difficulty. A white-bread-like aura of yeastiness serves as a noble aromatic expression of botrytis, while an influx of caramel further highlights the impression of botrytis ennoblement, complemented by a feel that is strikingly creamy as well as viscous. An aromatic evocation of sea breeze anticipates the mouthwatering salinity that, along with bright, juicy lemon and orange – testimony to the 13 grams of acidity that have, as it were, been held in reserve – informs this elixir’s superbly sustained finish. One’s mouth is left at once creamily coated and tingling as if from a lightning strike.”
