John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 94 points “The Bellevue “Cailloux” bottling from Domaine Bouland is made from vines that are over sixty years of age in this climat age and planted on granitic soils. The 2022 Bellevue “Cailloux” is nicely ripe in the style of the vintage, coming in at fourteen percent octane, but vibrant and utterly pure on both the nose and palate. The beautiful bouquet delivers an aromatic constellation of sweet dark berries, black cherries, woodsmoke, spit-roasted pigeon, black tea, fresh thyme and a superb base of granitic minerality. On the palate the wine is bright, focused and full-bodied, with a rock solid core of fruit, great mineral undertow and grip, ripe, firm tannins and excellent balance on the long, nascently complex and very promising finish. This is a classic bottle of young Morgon from a great vintage and will demand plenty of cellaring time before it softens up to drink. It will be very long-lived and a great wine once the tannins start to peel away. 2033-2085.”

John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 96 points “The 2022 vintage of Daniel Bouland’s Morgon “Delys 1926″ is a brilliant young Cru Beaujolais. The wine comes in at an even fourteen percent in this vintage and offers up truly stunning depth of fruit on both the nose and palate, as these ancient vines have dug deep into the subterranean water sources to keep maturity progressing flawlessly in this dry growing season. The wine wafts from the glass in a complex and sappy blend of sweet dark berries, black cherries, pomegranate, grilled pigeon, dark soil tones, espresso woodsmoke and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is pure, sappy and full-bodied, with a bottomless core of old vine fruit, fine-grained, buried tannins, great focus and grip and a long, seamlessly balanced and very complex finish. This is one of the greatest young bottles of Morgon I have ever had the pleasure to taste and it would be insane not to allow it at least some time in the cellar to unlock its secondary and tertiary layers of complexity. 2029-2085.”

Matured in large neutral oak foudre barrels and smaller barrels that are at least five years old.”

Winery Note “As ‘la Roche’ means, this vineyard is situated under the windmill (Moulin-A-Vent) on the mother rock old of 320 million years Only the Gamay grape is able to prosper on such soils almost without any water reserve throughout the year. Vinification: Picked and sorted by hand, then often de-stemmed, the grapes macerate slowly over the course of three to four weeks. Both pigeage and pumping over takes place during fermentation depending on the vintage. Winemaking and bottling: The wines are aged in our historic cellar for 10 months, a period spent in oak barrels, partly new and partly one, two and three vinages old.. The oak used to make the barrels comes from the French forests of Allier, Limousin and Nivernais. Tasting / Food pairing: La Roche is a wine of great tension, with lots of minerality and precision. It is very linear in style, a characteristic that makes it a particularly apt match for complex and refined dishes.”

Compact core of fine tannins, which drive the very long finish, where there’s a wonderful mineral freshness. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Dal Forno
 
For over thirty years, the Dal Forno family has been crafting deeply concentrated expressions of Valpolicella and Amarone. Their name practically defines the style of wines from this northeastern portion of the Veneto.
 
Established in 1983 by Romano Dal Forno, the estate vaulted to the heights of perfection in the Venato. The family employs traditional winemaking techniques, such as extended drying of the grapes before pressing, to craft their serious and seriously concentrated wines.
 
Vines hail from the foothills at around 1,000 feet above sea level. Here, the family’s 65 acres are planted to indigenous varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, grown and pruned according to ancient traditions.
 
So, what’s a wine lover to do? Our suggestion: embrace the concentration and richness inherent in Dal Forno wines. For no one matches the sheer hedonistic bombast of Dal Forno. Crave impact. EXPERIENCE power. Seek wines that whisper of the Old and Ancient mysteries of this world.

A dense, layered mouthfeel makes for a full-bodied palate that’s explosive yet somehow so refined and pretty all at the same time. The finish goes on and on. Incredible now, but better to wait for this giant to settle well into 2020.”

James Suckling 100 points “This is black as pitch in the glass and, yes, there’s a light, tarry edge to the super-concentrated prune, date and currant fruit. But even more interesting are the complex notes of bitter-orange liqueur, aged balsamic, fresh roasting herbs, cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, black tea and licorice. The more you decant in advance, the more nuances will emerge. It’s full-boded with huge concentration and lots of chewy tannin that is managing to hold the fruit back for now. This needs plenty of time to develop in the bottle. Just superb. One of the greatest Dal Forno’s ever.”

James Suckling 98 points “The current release. A tour de force, despite the sheer morass of palate-staining fruit. The malty oak is evident, yet operates as a welcome adjunct to corral and compress the swashbuckle of coffee grinds, beef bouillon, mint, leather varnish and saturated dark cherry liqueur, into a sheath of tension as much as sheer power. Grapes are dried for 70-80 days. This may seem obvious initially, but as one works it out in the glass and across the inner gums, the multitudinous layers become evident. A wine that shape-shifts and beguiles, as much it wrestles with the senses. Excellent. Drink or hold.”

Delve into one of the world’s oldest wineries…
 
There are wineries that have lasted centuries. These estates have been loved and sought-after for generations. Think of Saint Cosme in Gigondas, Schloss Gobelsburg in the Kamptal region of Austria, Karthäuserhof in the Mosel, Ricasoli and Antinori in Tuscany, and Kopke, the oldest Port House in the Douro or the world.
 
Kopke, founded in 1638, makes what might be the most vibrant and long-lived port wines available. They have been through adverse times in their nearly 400-year history, seeing dramatic shifts in the climate, swings in the popularity of their product, and the rise and fall of wars and dictators. Through all of this, they’ve been making the greatest Tawny and Colheita (vintage Tawny) Ports available.
 
In 1922, the Port House acquired the Quinta de São Luiz, recognized as one of the most important estates in the Douro due to the quality of its vineyards and its history. You can experience the 2015 tonight.

The acidity enlivens this, though, making it both lighter and brighter than a typical Tawny. It has a refreshing quality that is appealing to go with its complexity. There’s also power and grip, but it always tastes great. The finish goes on forever. This is a great white.”

Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 1934 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled March 2022 with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Of the many Sogevinus Tawnies that the producer showed over its various houses, this was the oldest and tasted like it. Yet, like all of the producer’s oldies, they do a great job in producing complexity without the fruit seeming too old. I’m told it is never topped off too. There are only about 450 liters left for the future. It is a bit darker, leaning a little more to molasses, but it’s surprisingly fresh for its age. It has fine concentration and an endless finish. It is certainly special, not automatically a lot better than, say, a 50 Year, but a very different experience.”

On the palate it is delicate, its sweetness perfectly matching its tannins and acidity, making it a balanced wine. A long and appealing finish. Served chilled, it reveals all its finesse and sophistication, especially when drunk with desserts made with caramel, dried fruit and spice, such as caramel fondant with apple and ginger jelly, tarte tatin, crème brulée and medium-strength cheeses. Best served at a temperature between 12 and 14°C.”

Kopke Quinta Sao Luiz Vintage Port 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 90-92 points “The 2015 Vintage Port Quinta S. Luiz is a single-quinta Porto that is a 50/50 blend of Touriga Nacional and a field blend from old vines (over 50 years old). It comes in at 102 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is elegant and shows excellent finesse. There’s not a lot of concentration, perhaps, but this delicious Kopke does have fine structure. It finishes with tension and increasingly assertive tannins as it airs out. Nicely done overall, this shows the potential to age well and improve in the cellar. This single-quinta Porto is more or less as good as its declared vintage sibling (the Cálem, this issue, also from Sogevinus). This is a bit pricier, though, and the styles are rather different, that Cálem feeling fuller in the mouth, while this feels harder edged. This was a tank sample, out of barrel and the final blend, when tasted.”

The rich palate is loaded with an awesome texture and notes of lemon curd, grapefruit and peaches. This is a nuanced, flavorful and food-friendly white. On the nose and palate, you’ll notice notes of pear, citrus, almond, and kaffir lime with a hint of flintiness and balanced acidity. Drink it with just about anything including sushi, grilled vegetables, chicken, and all sorts of seafood dishes. Only two barrels made, so quite limited.”

Winery Note “We start with Abbey Ridge Pinot Gris, which is farmed naturally without irrigation or noxious chemicals, throw the fruit into clay amphorae and allow it to do its thing naturally with wild ambient yeast. After fermentation is complete, we tighten down the amphorae lids and let it macerate for 6-7 weeks, then age the wine in neutral natural barrique for 18 months before bottling. And voila, we have Cameron Supernatural, a light red wine asking to be chilled and consumed au natural in the warm summer months!”

We love the lighter-than-typical body and balancing acidity, making this wine perfect for lighter fare and long, coastal sunsets.

Importer Note “Le Puy’s main-production wine ‘Emilien’ is comprised of 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Carmenère. After spontaneous fermentation in cement vats, it is transferred to 50-hectoliter foudres for one year, then to old 225-liter barriques for an additional year, before being bottled without fining or filtering. There is a harmony of elements in the wines of Le Puy–a weaving together of acid, fruit, tannin, mineral and earth–that is spellbinding. The ‘Emilien’ offers a succulence of sappy red fruit as well as a driving, tunneling palate of remarkable energy. A subtle but irresistible umami pervades the palate and grounds some of the wine’s higher tones with its savory pull.”

Nikolaihof is a giant of Austrian wine—a producer whose history and quality are unrivaled even in a country full of great producers. The wines are bright, precise and mineral-drenched with the power and density of the Wachau. The family produces wines of deep resonant flavors with a core of vinosity, especially from their top vineyards, Im Weingebirge (the first named vineyard in Europe), Vom Stein and Steiner Hund. Across their holdings, vines average around 50 years in age.
 
The estate maintains a sense of restlessness and invention about them while being strong tied to ancient practices, best described by importer Rare Wine Company as combining perfectionism with arch-traditionalism. Nothing is done hastily. Whether that’s using a centuries old wooden press, aging for years on the lees, or reimagining what wine from the Wachau can be through extended cask aging in their 700-year-old cellar, they take very traditional techniques to occasionally give us a beautifully refracted image of Austrian wine.
 
To taste a wine from Nikolaihof is to taste the history of wine. These wines transcend vintages and varieties to offer a rare glimpse of time itself. These are the heights of Austrian wine from a producer that will outlive us all.

Despite the love of diehard fans, Austrian wines don’t receive the attention they deserve. Were these from France, these biodynamic, single-vineyard, Grand Cru, food-friendly, cellar-worthy, and ridiculously underpriced gems from thousand-year-old wineries would be three times as expensive. These are the best value in luxury whites in the world.
 
The Kamptal region in Austrian is the slightly less famous brother to the Wachau . As a result, their best wines are an even better value. The quality is on par, so the wines from the likes of Bründlmayer end up being the best deals across the Old World. (The bottlings from the Heiligenstein vineyard, likely the Kamptal’s most famous, are in a class by themselves.)
 
Bründlmayer’s wines are somewhere in the middle between the fruit-forward style of Hirsch and the heft and contemplative nature of Gobelsburg. These are probably the most subtle when young, but blossom with age. The wines reward attention and pairings with food: with the flexibility and complexity of Chardonnay, yet with aromatics that seem to beg for harder-to-pair dishes that contain onions, asparagus, or charring. Few estates capture the depth and elegance of dry Riesling quite like Dr. Bürklin-Wolf. Nestled in the sun-soaked hills of the Pfalz, this historic German winery has been perfecting the art of Riesling since 1597. Over four centuries later, the estate remains family-owned and proudly independent, now led by Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze, who has turned it into one of the world’s benchmarks for terroir-driven, biodynamic wine.

The Bürklin-Wolf estate sits in Wachenheim, a village long prized for its gently sloping vineyards and warm, dry climate. That sunshine — more similar to Alsace than the cooler Mosel — gives their Rieslings a fuller body and riper fruit, while preserving the signature German precision and minerality. Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze has carried the family’s vision into the modern era by converting the entire estate to biodynamic farming, one of the first major producers in Germany to do so. The result is wines that feel alive: vibrant, pure, and deeply expressive of place.

After studying wine in Germany, the late Russ Raney founded the Evesham Wood winery in 1986. He took his inspiration from Burgundy and Alsace, planting Pinot Noir and aromatic white varieties. He was an inspiring figure in the Valley who influenced many folks in the industry.
 
After working with the founder and winemaker of Evesham Wood for several years, Erin Nuccio took over as winemaker and owner in 2010 while developing his own original label, Haden Fig. Under Erin’s stewardship, the already topnotch winery has continued to improve, showcasing the profound terroir of the land.
 
The estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, is planted on an east facing slope with iron-rich soils overlooking the Willamette River. It is certified organic and, as a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition, is dry farmed. The winery is certified organic, too.
 
While the Evesham Wood wines tend toward elegance and the Haden Fig wines towards more fruit-forward notes, both are expressive examples of their (all dry-farmed) vineyards. Erin’s aim is to continue in the style of minimal intervention at optimal (not over-) ripeness and reduced yields to allow vineyards to express themselves.
