Chateau le Puy
Chateau le Puy is a Merlot whisperer. From the high plateau where also sits Saint Emilion and Pomerol is this noble estate. The clay, silex, and limestone of their soils as well as the unusually high elevation for Bordeaux results in elegant and restrained Merlot-based epics. We love the lighter-than-typical body and balancing acidity, making this wine perfect for lighter fare and long, coastal sunsets.

Chateau le Puy Cuvee Emilien, Francs Cotes de Bordeaux 2022 750ml $49.50 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “Le Puy’s main-production wine ‘Emilien’ is comprised of 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Carmenère. After spontaneous fermentation in cement vats, it is transferred to 50-hectoliter foudres for one year, then to old 225-liter barriques for an additional year, before being bottled without fining or filtering. There is a harmony of elements in the wines of Le Puy–a weaving together of acid, fruit, tannin, mineral and earth–that is spellbinding. The ‘Emilien’ offers a succulence of sappy red fruit as well as a driving, tunneling palate of remarkable energy. A subtle but irresistible umami pervades the palate and grounds some of the wine’s higher tones with its savory pull.”

Complex and layered, it opens with red and black fruit, gentle herbal notes and a touch of jam. A slightly floral tone reflects the site’s character. Alexakis Winery Assyrtiko PGI Crete 2024 750ml $18 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Pam Roberto-Wine Review Online 91 points “Born on the volcanic slopes of Santorini, Assyrtiko’s ability to thrive in hot, arid climates has made it a favorite among winemakers across Greece. Outside of Santorini, Assyrtiko tends towards riper fruit and softer minerality, while still delivering its hallmark freshness. Alexakis’s 2024 release is a refreshing and easy-drinking example of this increasingly popular grape variety. Clean, bright, and cheerful on the nose, it brims with peaches, mandarins, sliced green apples, seashells, and a hint of petrol. Medium-bodied, the mouthwatering palate delivers juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a wet stone minerality that carries through the long finish.”

New Nikolaihof
Sip Into History
Nikolaihof is a giant of Austrian wine—a producer whose history and quality are unrivaled even in a country full of great producers. The wines are bright, precise and mineral-drenched with the power and density of the Wachau. The family produces wines of deep resonant flavors with a core of vinosity, especially from their top vineyards, Im Weingebirge (the first named vineyard in Europe), Vom Stein and Steiner Hund. Across their holdings, vines average around 50 years in age.
The estate maintains a sense of restlessness and invention about them while being strong tied to ancient practices, best described by importer Rare Wine Company as combining perfectionism with arch-traditionalism. Nothing is done hastily. Whether that’s using a centuries old wooden press, aging for years on the lees, or reimagining what wine from the Wachau can be through extended cask aging in their 700-year-old cellar, they take very traditional techniques to occasionally give us a beautifully refracted image of Austrian wine.
To taste a wine from Nikolaihof is to taste the history of wine. These wines transcend vintages and varieties to offer a rare glimpse of time itself. These are the heights of Austrian wine from a producer that will outlive us all.

Bründlmayer:
The Greatest Wines You Haven’t Tried
(And Won’t Break the Bank Doing So)
Despite the love of diehard fans, Austrian wines don’t receive the attention they deserve. Were these from France, these biodynamic, single-vineyard, Grand Cru, food-friendly, cellar-worthy, and ridiculously underpriced gems from thousand-year-old wineries would be three times as expensive. These are the best value in luxury whites in the world.
The Kamptal region in Austrian is the slightly less famous brother to the Wachau . As a result, their best wines are an even better value. The quality is on par, so the wines from the likes of Bründlmayer end up being the best deals across the Old World. (The bottlings from the Heiligenstein vineyard, likely the Kamptal’s most famous, are in a class by themselves.)
Bründlmayer’s wines are somewhere in the middle between the fruit-forward style of Hirsch and the heft and contemplative nature of Gobelsburg. These are probably the most subtle when young, but blossom with age. The wines reward attention and pairings with food: with the flexibility and complexity of Chardonnay, yet with aromatics that seem to beg for harder-to-pair dishes that contain onions, asparagus, or charring. Stock up for your next meal now!
Newly Arrived from Bründlmayer:
Weingut Bründlmayer Langenloiser Zweigelt Rosé 2024 750ml $27.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Beautiful light-weighted pink colour, intriguing aroma of fine red fruits (cherry, wild strawberries) accompanied by delicate floral hints (violets) and (youthful) yeasty notes. A refreshing front palate with lively acid elements, then a red-fruited mid-palate with a juicy profile, medium body, balanced, really much fun based, finely structured with a pleasant floral and slightly herbal finale.”

Weingut Bründlmayer Ried Steinmassl Riesling 1ÖTW, Kamptal 2019 750ml $37 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2019 Ried Steinmassel 1ÖTW Kamptal Riesling opens clear, intense and snappy on the nose, quite open and with floral fruit aromas but also a very ripe and dried raisin aroma intermingled with crystalline (para-gneiss and amphibolite) and black pepper notes. Dense and juicy on the palate, this is a concentrated, firmly structured, crystalline, very elegant and tensioned Riesling with a dried stone fruit aroma and very firm phenolics. A wine to age for at least 5-6 years. There are crunchy tannins on the finish that might come from the reduction rather than the pressing, which was whole clusters and pressed at 6 p.m. when they started to fill at 11 a.m. Picked on October 17th. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg in June 2021.”

Very tightly wound and energetic, this is a radically racy dry riesling for Austria. Very long, whiplash finish that will either turn you off or drive you wild, like us. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

David Schildknecht-Vinous 93 points “Buddleia, lemon blossom and ocean spray rush from the glass, then provide alluring inner-mouth perfume and mineral nuance on a luscious, surprisingly buoyant palate saturated with ripe white peach and lime. This finishes with vibrant tingling of crystalline mineral impingements, an invigoratingly reductive hint of struck flint, seductive liquid floral perfume and saliva-drawing salinity. 2017-2028.”

Weingut Bründlmayer Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 1ÖTW, Kamptal DAC 2016 750ml $99 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points “Although this is still very young it begins dramatically with an intensely herbal and white fruits nose. Mineral power kicks in on the palate and drives it forward at a brisk clip. A slightly austere finish, but one that’s full of stony character and is very long and bright. Drink now.”
Weingut Bründlmayer Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 1ÖTW, Kamptal DAC 2022 750ml $59 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96 points “The 2022 Riesling Heiligenstein is from core parcels of the site, where cool Waldviertel air meets the warm Pannonian influence. This 2022 vintage is the first where the Lyra- and Guyot-trained vines were co-harvested and co-fermented. The nose has a subtle note of cypress, with a touch of smokiness and a suspicion of green citrus peel. The palate adds a riper notion of juicy white peach, but remains framed with tingling citrus. Both elements together result in immense juiciness, showing a svelte exuberance that, for now, skips over stony minerality, which will take time to reveal itself. Weingut Bründlmayer Käferberg Grüner Veltliner, Kamptal DAC 2021 750ml $79 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2021 Grüner Veltliner Ried Käferberg 1ÖTW demonstrates immediately that loess terroir doesn’t necessarily mean it doesn’t bear mineral wines. This Veltliner is pure chalk, crystalline and Veltliner, so very authentic and, at least, exciting on the nose, which is deep, saline and rich yet pure and intermingling ripe pear with saline mineral notes. Vital, pure and saline, with a creamy-elegant texture built by sur lie aging in oak, this is a complex and elegant Käferberg with a remarkably dense, long and intense finish. This is a seriously structured wine doubtlessly from old vines and superb viticulture that is now certified organic. The finish is complex, saline and very long. There are not many wines that can stand up to a green curry, but this is one of them. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2024.”
Weingut Bründlmayer Kamptaler Terrassen Gruner Veltliner, Kamptal DAC 2024 750ml $31.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Juvenile bouquet, purely flavored with pome fruit (pear, apples) accompanied by fragrant notes of citrus and hay- & acacia flowers, still slightly yeasty; dry, fresh and fruity with a touch of appealing roundness, moderate body and a fine grip; again sappy pome and stone fruit tones; great harmony, hints of tea leaves, minerals and spice in the mouthwatering finish.”

Weingut Bründlmayer Ried Steinberg Chardonnay, Kamptal 2021 750ml $69 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Falstaff Magazine 95 points “Light golden yellow, silver reflections. Fine wood spice, a touch of caramel, blossom honey and orange peel, vanilla echo as well as some papaya and spicy nuances. Juicy, elegant, salty, white tropical fruit, tobacco finish, mineral echo, very good persistency, reductive finish, will benefit from bottle age.”

Weingut Bründlmayer Ried Steinmassl Riesling 1ÖTW, Kamptal 2021 750ml $37 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points “Eye-poppingly fresh nose of ferns and savory notes with underlying, lemony fruit. Very tightly wound and energetic, this is a radically racy dry riesling for Austria. Very long, whiplash finish that will either turn you off or drive you wild, like us. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Bründlmayer Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 1ÖTW, Kamptal DAC 2015 750ml $99 special, 5 bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht-Vinous 93 points “Buddleia, lemon blossom and ocean spray rush from the glass, then provide alluring inner-mouth perfume and mineral nuance on a luscious, surprisingly buoyant palate saturated with ripe white peach and lime.

This is beautiful, taut, long and serene. (Bone-dry).”

It was produced with Garnacha and 10% Tempranillo that they picked very early in a very warm summer to keep the alcohol to a moderate 13.5%. It’s nicely textured, and even if it’s not terribly complex, it’s approachable, clean and gives a lot of pleasure. 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023.”

Evodia Old Vines Garnacha, Calatayud 2020 750ml $13.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 91 points “The very young and juicy 2020 Evodia comes from a year with more rain than average and moderately warm temperatures that resulted in an early harvest of a generous crop that delivered wines of lower alcohol (14.5%) and more freshness. It fermented with some 20% full clusters and had a very soft vinification and extraction with no pump-overs. This is always very aromatic (it’s what the name means), and in 2020 it’s even paler and more ethereal then the 2019 that was already impressive and quite a change from previous vintages and other wines from the cooperative. Only 20% of the volume matured in oak and the wine is not oaky at all and has contained ripeness and very light extraction. This is bright and elegant, fresh and very pleasant to drink. Incredible for the price.”
Bodegas Breca Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines, Calatayud 2022 750ml $14 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “Always a great value, the 2022 Garnacha De Fuego (100% Garnacha) reveals a vivid ruby hue as well as a gorgeous perfume of red and black cherries, lavender, ground pepper, and leather, with a kiss of loamy earth and stony minerality. Medium-bodied, it’s a pure, balanced, elegant, seamless wine.”
