Sicilian Wines
Italy’s Sicily seems to have it all for wine: fun and fruity Frappato, serious and volcanic-influenced Nerellos from the slopes of Mount Etna, iconic dessert wines, and just about everything in between. With the recent, island-wide push for quality all across the price spectrum, there has never been a better time to explore these wines.
For lovers of volcanic-influenced wines, Sicily’s Mount Etna is a cherished place. Home to the Burgundy-esque varieties of Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, these are gorgeous, terroir-driven wines. The two grapes offer layers of spice and high acidity, partly due to being grown on the highest vineyards in all of Europe.
One of the finest producers on this volcano is Terre Nere, a domain that offers multiple single-vineyard wines. We have its proprietor, Marc De Grazia, to thank for bringing international attention to this stunning region. He founded Tenuta delle Terre Nere over twenty years ago after falling in love with the unique terroir created (and continually recreated) by the still-active volcano.
Calabretta is also one of our favorites, if tragically overlooked. Their commitment to chemical free farming, stewarding old vines, and meticulous winemaking is evident in every bottle of wine they craft from grapes grown along the slopes of Mount Etna. The wines have a rustic and savory feel that evokes a perfectly-cellared Pinot Noir. The high elevation, intense sunshine and marginal soils create incredible wines filled to the brim with flavor.
Those looking for serious options outside of Mount Etna should look to the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG. This appellation marries the dark fruit and earth of Nero d’Avola with the pretty, red-toned flavors of Frappato. The results show intriguing combinations of lifted acidity and fruit with a rich, savory backbone.

Calabretta Nerello Cappuccio Terre Siciliane IGT 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 89 points “The 2019 Nerello Cappuccio is incredibly pretty, with a bouquet of musky cherry and raspberry complemented by stemmed roses and flowery undergrowth. This is silky yet lifted, leaning more toward the savory spectrum on the palate, as woodland berries mingle with saline-minerals under an air of inner florals. It’s a bit shorter than anticipated yet fresh, leaving nuances of waxy red fruits.”
Cusumano Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $14.50, that’s $13.78 at 5% off and $13.05 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 90 points “A fruity nero d’avola with typical dark cherries, black plums and blackberry fruit. Juicy and round on the palate with a medium body and supple tannins. Easy, fruity finish with bright acidity. Drink now. Glass stopper.”

Benanti Serra della Contessa ‘Particella No. 587’ Etna Rosso Riserva 2016 1.5L Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 magnums in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 95 points “The 2016 Etna Rosso Serra della Contessa Particella No. 587 Riserva is dark and savory in the glass, grumbling up with notes of crushed rocks and ash that evolve further to reveal musky black currants, hints of licorice and dried violets. This is velvety-smooth, yet not weighty in feel. Instead, the 2016 seems to glide effortlessly across the palate, yet what it leaves behind is a saturation of primary fruit and mineral tones, as well as silky tannins that penetrate deeply. The Serra della Contessa finishes structured yet long and unexpectedly fresh, with balsam herbs and a touch of salted licorice that slowly fades. This Etna Rosso is a powerhouse, but it is in need of cellaring to reveal all of its charms.”

Gurrieri Frappato Terre Siciliane IGT 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $21.90, that’s $20.81 at 5% off and $19.71 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: Lighter in profile, Gurrieri’s Frappato is a fantastic red wine to drink in the summer months, especially as a beverage while you grill. You see Siciliy is not just a viticultural hotspot, the Southern end of the island is in the same latitude as North Africa. It’s easy to bake under the Sun there. Chill this wine down to see a Sicilian farmer’s favorite way to beat the heat!
Arianna Occhipinti Il Frappato Terre Siciliane IGT 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now

Decanter 93 points “You can feel all of Arianna Occhipinti’s tremendous energy and passion in her wines. The 2023 Il Frappato marks the 20th vintage of this landmark wine for the region. A dark cherry fragrance predominates, while the tight and bright palate is wound around a sapid core with gentle phenolic grip, balanced by breezy herbs and a hint of strawberry on the finish. Pure class. Organic.”
Arianna Occhipinti SP68 Sicilia Rosso IGT 2024 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 28 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2024 vintage. 2023 review provided for reference.
Eric Guido-Vinous 91 points “The 2023 Rosso SP68 is pretty and perfumed, with a blend of crushed roses and violets accentuating blackberries, white smoke and wet stones. It washes across the palate with a liquid floral concentration and tart wild berry fruits, all guided by a core of brisk acidity. The 2023 leaves the mouth salivating as a tart cranberry crunchiness resonates and hints of blood orange slowly fade. resonates and hints of blood orange slowly fade. “
Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Bellacolonna’ 20th Anniversary Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points ‘This is a special bottling for the 20th anniversary of the estate. It has depth and intensity with a medium to full body, a creamy stone and basalt texture, red fruits and a mushroom and bark undertone. The linear, vivid finish goes on and on. Needs time to open. Be patient.”
Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 96+ points “The 2023 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana is dreamy, with a perfumed bouquet of rose, violet, smoke and sour citrus. This is wildly energetic and spry, with crisp red berry fruits and crunchy mineral tones that create an amazing tactile feel as sweet spice tones resonate throughout. The 2023 closes down hard through the finish, as expected in its youthful state. A saturation of crushed wild blueberry and lavender fades slowly.”
Tenuta delle Terre Nere Prephylloxera ‘La Vigna di Don Peppino’ Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $165, that’s $156.75 at 5% off and $148.50 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 96 points “Darkly alluring and youthfully backward, the 2022 Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Calderara Sottana smolders up with a blend of sweet spices, dusty violets and ash, giving way to dried black cherries, sage and cloves. This is velvety yet finessed, with a polished wave of ripe red and blue fruit that flows across a juicy stream of acidity. Hints of sour citrus add contrast toward the close. It finishes remarkably fresh and energetic, still tannic but lively, as crunchy tannins resonate and an air of lavender slowly fades. This is an elegant and genuinely harmonious edition of this cuvée. Simply stunning.”

Feudo Montoni Passito Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT NV 375ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 16 half-bottles in stock now
Ian D’Agata-Vinous 94 points “Bright deep red with an orange rim. The nose really opens with aeration to offer sweet red plum, dehydrated red cherry, cinnamon and raisins. Then similar flavors to the aromas lifted by juicy, harmonious acidity. Finishes very long and suave with saline nuances and repeating notes of raisins. Lovely, light on its feet dessert wine that seems less sweet than it really is thanks to its piercing acidity. One of the best sweet wines I have tasted so far this year. This is a blend of air-dried Nero d’Avola and Perricone aged in wood barrels for seven months and then twelve months in bottle prior to going on sale.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife’s edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019.”

Falkenstein Krettnacher Ober Schäfershaus Riesling Spätlese Trocken AP18 2023 750ml $39 special, 28 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points ‘The 2023er Krettnacher Ober Schäfershaus Riesling Spätlese Trocken comes 60-year-old vines planted in the similarly name Lieu-Dit in the Altenberg vineyard underpinned by Diabas elements. It offers a superb nose of greengage, bergamot, smoke, wet stone, and grapefruit zest sorbet. The wine is racy but beautifully playful on the bone-dry tasting palate and leaves a superbly feel of menthol in the long finish. 2033-2048.”

Weingut Karlsmuhle Kaseler Nies’chen Kabinett Riesling, Mosel 2019 750ml Was $19, Now $16 special, 15 bottles in stock now
No reviews available for the 2019 vintage. 2018 review provided for reference.
David Schildknecht-Vinous 90 points “Pear, apple, quince, white currant and lime signal on the nose that this wine originated with crunchier and higher-acid Riesling berries than did the corresponding Kabinett feinherb. That is confirmed by a bright, tangy palate impression, though buoyancy is accompanied by quite pronounced sweetness, which generates a bit of edgy tension with the wine’s tart and tangy aspects. A lovely thread of honeysuckle perfume runs through this whole performance. And the aforementioned tension proves reasonably productive, inasmuch as the lightly sweet-sour finish is invigoratingly nippy in its evocations of apple skin and currant seeds. It’s also lusciously fruity and admirably clear. You could certainly mount a convincing case that this wine is Spätlese-typical, but then, that’s true about a great many vintage 2018 Rieslings that are labeled “Kabinett,” including some truly delicious ones. (Drink between 2020-2030).”

Weingut Kunstler Kostheimer Weiss Erd Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheingau 2020 750ml Was $49, Now $42.50 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 97 points “A masterpiece from an almost unknown vineyard site. The cool and deep nose pulls you into this very concentrated and supple dry riesling GG that has so much power, packed into a sleek silhouette. Long, silky and chalky finish. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Uralte Reben Grosses Gewachs, Mosel 2018 750ml $39 special, 29 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 91+ points “The 2018er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken Uralte Reben GG was made in traditional Fuder cask from over 100 year-old un-grafted vines in the Brück part of the vineyard. It offers an intense nose made of grapefruit bitter, anise, herbs and some white flowers. The wine develops a rather intense but quite structured feel of lemon zest, camphor, herbs and fine spices on the palate. The finish is quite powerful and hugely tart. 2021-2028.”

Weingut Alfred Merkelbach ‘Urgluck’ Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese, Mosel 2018 750ml $39 special, 30 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 94 points “The Urglück section of the Würzgarten is the Merkelbachs’ filet section, still planted with ungrafted old vines. The 2018 Urglück Auslese from Weingut Merkelbach is an utterly refined and effortless example of the vintage. The bouquet is the epitome of elegance, wafting from the glass in a blend of pear, apple, strawberry chiffon, bee pollen, lovely minerality, lime blossoms and hints of the honeycomb to come with bottle age. On the palate the wine is pure, bright and fullish, with lovely filigree and focus, a fine core, good mineral undertow and a long, nascently complex and simply superb finish. This is not flashy, but the one more pays attention to it, the further one is drawn into its bottomless sense of beauty. 2026-2065. 94.”

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 92 points “Very fresh lemon-balm and blossom nose with no hint of the opulence of the vintage. Excellent balance of bright lemon and white-peach fruit with silky acidity and a whisker of unfermented grape sweetness that smoothes the touch of tannin. Drink or hold.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 91+ points “The 2018 Riesling (Gimmeldinger) Mandelgarten “VDP. Erste Lage” is pure, fresh and fine but also ripe and aromatic on the nose. The palate is pure, fresh and straight, less juicy now than the 2017 but nuanced and stimulating due to an earlier harvest. Stimulatingly salty and piquant on the finish. Tasted in Haardt, December 2019.”

Weingut Prinz Hendelberg Riesling Trocken, Rheingau 2020 750ml $28 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points “Quite funky nose that needs some air to open up, then ripe-quince, apricot and lilac notes develop. Weingut Daniel Vollenweider ‘Felsenfest’ Riesling Trocken, Mosel 2022 750ml $28 special, 34 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 93 points “A remarkable dry riesling for this humble category with stacks of crisp pear and fresh herb character plus plenty of leesiness. Stacks of slate and wild herb character at the very well-structured finish. Still a bit on the shy side, but this only needs a bit more time in the bottle. Most of this cuvee comes from the Steffensberg site and all of it comes from steep sites with slate soil. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.”
