Wine Enthusiast 92 Points “Editor’s Choice. Sourced once again from the biodynamic Momtazi vineyard, this exceptional wine is lightly tawny in color and scented with sweet straw and cocoa. In the mouth it’s rich and full-bodied, with apple fruit flavors that have an autumnal cast. The length and overall power are outstanding. Drink now and over the next three or four years. -Paul Gregutt”

Wine Enthusiast 93 Points “Biodynamically farmed fruit from this much-loved vineyard was fermented in 500 liter puncheons and aged in both puncheons and barrels. It’s earthy and complex, with scents of clover and brambly red berries. Highlights of citrus and punchy phenolic flavors reflect the sure touch of winemaker Thibaud Mandet in this, his second release following 13 years at WillaKenzie. -Paul Gregutt”

Wine & Spirits 92 Points “Owned by the Delon family of Chateau Leoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien, this small property has produced a dense wine. Chateau Saint Michel is winemaking at the pinnacle of technology. This medium-bodied red possesses a fine, silky texture and nice balance all the way through the finish. There is a lovely elegance to this wine made from 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc grape varieties. Simply fantastic.”

“Paolo Scavino”
“…Barolo bounces back with a stellar vintage in 2019 that could very well represent the beginning of a new cycle of strong, outstanding years for this historic appellation. The 2019s are potent, tightly wound wines that will thrill readers who appreciate the nuance, subtlety, and structure of Nebbiolo. Today, the 2019s show elements that, at times, recall vintages such as 2016, 2005, and 1995.”

Paolo Scavino Barolo 2019 1.5L $99 special, 6 magnum bottles available
Paolo Scavino Barolo 2019 375ml $24 special, 24 half-bottles available
Kerin O’keefe 96 Points “Absolutely gorgeous, the 2019 Barolo from Paolo Scavino stuns with its fragrance of perfumed berry, dark spice, Alpine herb and dog rose. One of best entry level Barolos from the vintage, it’s focused, vibrant and savory, delivering crushed mint, star anise, cranberry, red cherry and blood orange. Elegant and taut, it boasts polished tannins while bright acidity imparts vibrancy and tension
James Suckling 95 Points “The fresh flowers, like roses, really come through here. Perfumed. Sliced strawberry and citrus. Full-bodied with linear and tight tannins. Bright acidity gives it drive and focus. Give it four or five years to soften and come together.”

Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric Del Fiasc 2019 1.5L $249 special, 4 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Points “The 2019 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is the hallmark wine of the estate, and it shows. Taking on more concentration, it is pure and generous with kirsch, star anise, nutmeg, and menthol and moves impressively to the palate with ease and nobility. It offers fantastic depth while remaining true to the vintage and propels forward through an arch of acidity, while having grounded notes of Earl Grey tea, black cherry, and crushed stones as well as ripe tannins. Drink 2026-2046.”
James Suckling 97 Points “Aromas of strawberry, orange, white rose, and sandalwood follow through to a full body with very fine tannins that have a velvety texture that is focused and refined. Vivid acidity. Juicy and flavorful. Lovely depth and intensity. Give it five to six years of bottle age”
Wine Advocate 94 Points “With the gold label, the Paolo Scavino 2019 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is also a bit closed on first nose. I came back to this wine (and all the others in this flight) 24 hours later to monitor the progression of the bouquet. At this young stage, you get basic primary fruit with some light spice. The tannins are a bit more etched and prominent in this wine. You feel chalky minerality on the close.”

Château Pegau Chateauneuf De Pape Cuvee Reservee 2019 750ml $79 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95-97 Points “The 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée looks set to rival the best examples of this bottling. Made up of approximately 80% Grenache, with 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and smaller amounts of other permitted varieties, it’s impressively complex on the nose, with scents of black cherries, blackberries and black olives, plus mysterious wafts of violets and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long and velvety, a sure-fire bet for cellaring.”

Chateau Lassegue Les Cadrans De Lassegue GC 2020 750ml $29 special, 24 bottles available
Winemaker’s Note “Les Cadrans de Lassègue 2020 shows an intense and deep color. Black and red fruits abound on the nose, dominated by cherry, blackberry, and red currant, punctuated by nutmeg and rose petal. The palate is rich and fruit-forward, carried by silky tannins. The length, lively minerality, and persistent finish are the expression of the estate’s clay-limestone soils in an excellent vintage.”

Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay 2021 750ml $74.50 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 Points “This is made with fruit from the Sexton Vineyard, at 200 meters in altitude (80 meters higher than Tarraford). Within the vineyard, the clones are dominated by Gingin (brought over to Victoria by Phil Sexton), followed by Dijon clones, planted in the 1990s. The 2021 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay is composed of 60% Gingin. Twenty percent of the parcels went through malolactic fermentation—clone 277 and some of the 96. This is salty as anything—a very good thing in my book—and the sheer intensity of flavor in the mouth is mouthwatering. Preserved lemon and grapefruit pith lace the edges of the mid-palate. Very smart—it has the Yarra precision of acid and streamlined phenolics, but it brings concentration of flavor and thrilling phenolics. Super smart wine.”

Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $79 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Spectator 96 Points “Fragrant and expressive, with polished, creamy tannins setting the stage for blueberry, raspberry and cardamom flavors. Delivers details of palo santo, brown sugar, dried violet and sweet mint tea on the long, impressive finish. Drink now through 2034.”

La Jota W.S. Keyes Chardonnay 2020 750ml $109 special, 6 bottles available
Winemaker’s Note “The 2020 W.S. Keyes Chardonnay opens with a complimentary nose of white peach and other orchard fruit, jasmine, and almond. On the palate, a mineral-drenched core of red and green apples is complicated by maple butter, white pepper, and toast. The overarching compilation of fruit, floral, savory, and spice is remarkable, conveying both energy and richness in this complex bottle.”

The Wines of Alain Chabanon

“My vision of wine can be summed up in two words – finesse and elegance. I seek to make wines that are different, that have real personality.”

In his Château at Montpeyroux, located near the Limestone Plateau of Larzac, Alain Chabanon is making a reputation as one of the finest biodynamic vignerons and winemakers in The Languedoc. Beginning his career with a plan to raise heirloom Aubrac steers as beef cattle, his ranching dreams were derailed when he accepted a job in the fields of a winery in Bordeaux and fell in love with viticulture. With his previous bovine aspirations it’s no surprise then that his wines are exceptionally culinary in their balance and versatility, perfect for fine dining occasions both at home and abroad.

Alain Chabanon Campredon Llarzac Rouge 2020 750ml $24 special, 23 bottles available
“This is an absolutely wonderful Syrah-Mouvedre-Grenache blend from Montpeyroux. The tannins here are smooth enough to be almost undetectable, but this is not a thin wine, it’s bright with excellent fruit and minerality. A real crowd pleaser that will still appeal to old world aficionados.”

Alain Chabanon Petit Trelans Blanc 2022 750ml $28 special. 12 bottles available
“A very unique blend here—Chenin blanc and vermentino. There is lift here– citrus and acid with a round mouthfeel. This should appeal to fans of whites from Bordeaux and the Loire.”

Alain Chabanon L’esprit De Font Caude 2018 750ml $39 special, 36 bottles available
“As a more structured Syrah-Mouvedre-Grenache, this would be ideal for laying down in the cellar, but with its fine tannic structure could be drunk young with a meal of beef or lamb.”

Chateau Margilliere Bastide Provence Rose 2021 750ml WAS $16 NOW $14 special, 22 bottles available
Winery Note “A robe of very pale and attractive pink. Expressive of a wild strawberry, the nose reveals a hint of grapefruit. A large and delicate mouth for the pleasure of the buds, with aromas of raspberry and jasmine.” Certified organic.

Corsini Marsiliana Maremma Toscana 2015 750ml WAS $36 NOW $33 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 Points “Described as the “grand vin” of this estate, the 2015 Marsiliana is remarkable for its precision and definition. This limited-release Tuscan red is a well-structured blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The forest and floral notes are some of the fine details mirroring the vineyards of limestone earth nestled among the Maremma pines. Black fruit is matched seamlessly to savory nuances. The vintage is still young, as this wine is built for the long haul.”
James Suckling 94 Points “Beautiful clarity on the nose with tangerine peel, citrus, licorice, herbs and Chinese spices. Full-bodied and tight. Yet, there are caressing tannins and a mineral finish which carries itself long and succulent. Drink in 2020.”

Les Mesclances Romane Cotes De Provence Rose 2020 750ml WAS $24 NOW $19 special, 23 bottles available
Wine Advocate “The 2020 Cotes de Provence Rose Romane is a blend of 42% Grenache, 40% Cinsault and 18% Syrah. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, it’s a predictable pale salmon-hued wine, with vibrant notes of lime zest, alpine strawberries and hints of peach and melon. Medium-bodied, it’s crisp, clean and impeccably made, with a lasting finish. For the price, it’s a solid value.”

Macizo Ourensan Peixe De Estrada 2016 750ml WAS $24 NOW $19 special, 20 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 Points “In the initial vintage, the top of the range is the 2016 Peixes da Rocha, a blend of grapes from two extreme and cold plots, Santa Mariña de Froxais at 825 meters in altitude and the southeast-facing Bacelo da Cova in Punxeiro at 725 meters in altitude. The two plots have a field blend that includes red and white grapes, even if the main grape is Mencía. Production methods are similar for all three wines—fermentation with full clusters and indigenous yeasts and élevage in used 500-liter French barriques for some 12 months. It has a stony, flinty sensation and is aromatic and floral, with great elegance. It has a very intense palate with pungent flavors, very fine tannins and a mineral, almost salty sensation. 3,500 bottles were filled in February 2018.”

Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Spatlese #1 2017 750ml WAS $24 NOW $24 special, 30 bottles available
Vinous 91 Points “Very ripe Bartlett pear garlanded in honeysuckle features both on the nose and in the mouth. The midpalate combines delicacy and animation – appropriate to the inner-mouth florality and fruit juiciness on display – with creaminess and glossiness of texture. A squeeze of lime adds to the liveliness of a subtly sweet, buoyant, stone-lined and satisfyingly sustained finish. Water-color-like in its alliance of transparency with slight diffusion, this lovely Spätlese offers a delicate wash of flavors.”

Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Spatlese #2 2017 750ml WAS $28 NOW $24 special, 36+ bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines 92 Points “The 2017er Kinheimer Rosenberg Spätlese AP 2 was harvested at 88° Oechsle. It exhibits beautifully complex and refined aromatics blending floral elements with vineyard peach, grapefruit and spices. The wine is slightly reductive at first on the palate as it displays quite some racy acidity wrapped into a straight and pure structure. Notes of grapefruit, orange zest and spices emerge in the finish and lead to a slightly herbal and freshly tart feel in the after-taste. This is packed with quite some elements and only needs a couple of years to fully shine. 2025-2037.”

Migot Vin Gris Rose Cotes De Toul 2021 750ml WAS $26 NOW $21.90 special, 10 bottles available
Vom Boden importer note “The Mosel River begins in Alsace but spends most of its time running north through the Lorraine, the ignored little-brother of Alsace. This is the homeland of rosé, here called “Vin Gris.” For those looking for wines of finesse and delicacy, this is a thrilling region and there is no one better than the young Camille Migot: all hand-harvested, certified organic, all wild-yeast fermentations, NO chaptalization. SERIOUS. The Vin Gris is the calling card of the region, layered rosé that carries the nervous energy of the north.”

Monteillet Cote-Rotie Fortis 2014 750ml WAS $59 NOW $49 special, 7 bottles available
Vinous 92-93 Points “Dark purple. Spice-accented aromas of dark berry preserves and candied flowers gain a bright mineral nuance in the glass. Fresh and incisive on the palate, offering sappy blackberry and boysenberry flavors and hints of allspice and licorice. Fine-grained tannins give shape to a long, juicy, penetrating finish that emphatically echoes the floral note.”

Morgenster Lourens River Valley Red 2014 750ml WAS $21  NOW $18 special, 28 bottles available
Vinous 92 Points “The 2014 Lourens River Valley is a Bordeaux blend that offers light blackberry, tobacco and smoky scents on the nose; a hint of hickory develops with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and ripe, with supple tannins and a pinch of sour cherry and balsamic toward the finish. Quite mellow, so much so that you almost overlook the concentration here. Excellent.”

Mourat Collection Val De Loire Rose 2021 750ml WAS $18 NOW $14 special, 12 bottles available
Importer note “Organic. 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Gamay 40% Cabernet Franc grown on a mix of schist and rhyolite. Average age of the vines is 20 years. Hand-harvested, destemmed, pressed and settled with spontaneous fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel. Aged 5 months in tank before bottling.”

Mourat Grenouillere Negrette Rouge 2020 750ml WAS $29 NOW $21.90 special, 25 bottles available
80 year old Negrette vines

Mourat Ovni Val De Loire Rose 2021 750ml WAS $19 NOW $16 special, 13 bottles available
100% Grolleau Gris

Musto Carmelitano Aglianico Vulture Maschitano 2017 750ml WAS $19 NOW $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Vinous 92+ Points “The 2017 Aglianico del Vulture Maschitano Rosso lifts from the glass with a rich and darkly alluring mix of crushed plums and blackberries complemented by nuances of lavender, violets and a dusting of exotic spice. While silky, almost creamy in feel, there’s a core of saline-minerals and bright acidity that adds riveting tension, as tart wild berries mix with a twang of sour citrus and wild herbal tones. This thrilling, young Aglianico finishes long and lightly structured, keeping the energy high with a sweet-and-sour tug of dark fruits and hints of blood orange that linger impossibly long. The 2017 Maschitano Rosso is the total package, yet it comes from the youngest vines of the estate and represents the most accessible of the Musto Carmelitano portfolio.”

Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial Rioja 2018 750ml WAS $44 NOW $39 special, 79 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 Points “2018 was a cooler vintage, with a fairly long maturation, which made the wines somewhat fresher and less alcoholic, as showcased by the 2018 Selección Especial, a classical blend of the four red varieties from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano with contained ripeness (14.05% alcohol) and good freshness. It fermented in oak casks with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels, 40% of them new, for 26 months. They were not very happy with the vintage and had to sort and discard, but as they didn’t produce Prado Enea, Torre Muga or Haro, those grapes went into this wine. They are reluctant about 2018, but I think it was a vintage capable of the best and the worst, and this 2018 is floral, expressive and elegant. It’s medium to full- bodied, with very fine, chalky tannins, combining power and elegance. Amazing! 187,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021.”

Chablis

Known for its lively spark, that pop of acid and minerality that distinguishes Chablis from the rest of Burgundy. It’s lithe and racy, or as Jancis Robinson once said, it’s the “Little Black Dress” of white wine.

La Chablisienne Chablis L’homme Mort 1er Cru 2019 750ml $34.50 special, 26 bottles available
Vinous 90+ Points “The 2020 Chablis L’Homme Mort 1er Cru is the most reductive on the nose amongst La Chablisienne’s Premier Crus, though it opens with just 5-10 minutes in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced entry, modest depth, a fine edgy acidity that lends frisson towards the finish with quite a persistent, peppery aftertaste. Meliorates with aeration. Give it a year in bottle. Drink: 2024-2034. (Sep 2022)”

Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis Vielles Vignes 2020 $39 special, 35 bottles available
Winery Note “This cuvée is sourced from vines the age of which is between 45 and 70 years. A wine of exceptional concentration for a village level appellation, this wine is always a true expression of the kimmeridgian soils that make Chablis so distinctive. Aged for thirty months before release, Defaix’s old vines Chablis is richly dense with a classic flinty bouquet and long mineral-infused finish.”

Jean-Paul And Benoit Droin Chablis 2021 750ml $34.50 special, 32 bottles available
Decanter “Droin owns 10ha of AP Chablis. Much more interest here with a deeper hue in the glass and much more interest on the nose. Some greengage on the palate, together with a hint of pear and white peach. Pretty much a benchmark example of what village Chablis should be. Concentration and a lengthy mineral character to finish.”

Fevre Chablis Les Clos 2018 750ml $179 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 Points “The 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is another obvious success, mingling aromas of citrus and citrus confit with hints of beeswax, peach and pear in an inviting bouquet. Full-bodied, muscular and layered, it’s textural and fleshy, with a deep and tightly wound core, racy acids and a chalky finish. This is a fine effort that will improve with bottle age, but it is a bit more front-loaded out of the gates than the very fine 2017 rendition.”

Domaine Laroche Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru 2020 750ml $189 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 Points “This white starts out rich, with an incisive attack, displaying flavors of white flowers, white peach, lemon and mineral. Builds to a long aftertaste, gaining precision from beginning to end. Drink now through 2030.”

Domaine Laroche Chablis Blanchots Grand Cru 2020 750ml $149 special, 12 bottles available
Winery Note “The favourite Grand Cru of Domaine Laroche, offering much finesse and charm. Les Blanchots is a unique terroir made of a layer of white clay on Kimmeridgian limestone with ammonites. This is the ideal combination to keep the right amount of water for roots. The South-East exposure allows slow ripening and favours aroma development. Blanchots is delicate, silky and shows its charm after 5 years in bottle. At peak after 10 to 12 years.”

Lucien Le Moine Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru 2017 750ml $179 special, 2 bottles available
No reviews for 2017, 2016 review for reference.
Vinous 92-95 points “Musky scents of citrus fruits, gardenia, white rose, anise, smoke, fresh herbs and earth. Very dry, rich and thick, but with a remarkably sappy, penetrating quality to its citrus and floral flavors. The extremely slow-building, edge-free finish stains the palate with licorice and menthol. Utterly distinctive grand cru Chablis–but then this bottling has been consistently stunning since its inaugural 2012 vintage.”

Vietti, the Piedmont Standard

In the minds of most wine lovers, Vietti is what they think of when they think of Barolo. Proclaimed a Historical Brand of National Interest by Italy’s Minister of Economic Development Vietti represents Italian wine itself to its core: expressive, dramatic, and graceful with nearly infinite depth as it comes of age. 2019 is shaping up to be one of the finest vintages Barolo has seen in decades and so far, Vietti is leading the pack.

Vietti Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie 2019 750ml $128 special, 1 bottles available
Vinous 98 Points “The 2019 Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie is the best Barbaresco I have ever tasted from Vietti. Bright, translucent and full of energy, the 2019 is stunning from the very first taste, and it was poured after all the Barolos in the range. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, mint and orange peel all grace this exquisite, mind-blowing Barbaresco. The 2019 is pure and total finesse. For many years, the Barbaresco has been the hidden gem in this lineup. I am not sure how much longer that will last. The 2019 is outrageously beautiful. Don’t miss it!”

Vietti Barolo Monvigliero 2019 750ml $269 special, 9 bottles available
Vinous 97 Points “The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is stunning. What a wine. Rich, heady and explosive, the 2019 is a gorgeous, spherical Barolo that dazzles right out of the gate. Aromatically broad and expansive, the 2019 fleshes out beautifully in the glass. Bright red-toned fruit, orange zest, mint, spice and bright saline notes saturate the palate on the back end. The 2019 is a total stunner, even in this stage of youthful austerity. It comes across as a bit rustic compared to the 2018, but the final verdict on that won’t be evident for at least a number of years. This is the first vintage that includes a second parcel in Monvigliero. In the cellar, one lot saw submerged cap maceration, the other did not.”

Vietti Barolo Cerequio 2019 750ml $249 special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 98 Points “The 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a worthy follow up to the stellar 2018. Aromatic and deeply pitched, the 2019 races across the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. Crushed rted berry fruit, rose petal, mint, and cinnamon all open in the glass, but it is the wine’s silkiness and suppleness that impresses most. A kick of acids and tannins puts an exclamation point on the finish. This is a gorgeous Cerequio that takes all the finesse this site offers, and then turns up the volume. What a wine.”

Vietti Barolo Brunate 2019 750ml $259 special, 9 bottles available
Vinous 98 Points “The 2019 Barolo Brunate is a powerhouse. Black cherry, plum, spice, lavender, mocha, gravel and scorched earth all build as this virile, potent Barolo struts its stuff. The Brunate, is another super-impressive wine in this range. To be perfectly honest, the Brunate has never been one of my favorite wines here, but the 2019 is undeniably great. Perhaps the combination of parcels Vietti has today explains the multi-dimensional vibrancy that comes through. This is simply magnificent.”

Vietti Barolo Rocche Di Castiglione 2019 750ml $299 special, 6 bottles available
Vinous 99 Points “The 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is all class. Deep and sensual, the 2019 once again shows how magical this site is. A Barolo with no hard edges and tons of sensuality, the 2019 is positively stellar. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright red-toned fruit. The purity of the flavors is remarkable. Sweet floral and spice notes lend tons of lift as the Rocche gains in dimension with time in the glass. Resonant, expansive and sensual to the core, the Rocche will thrill Vietti fans.”

Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2019 750ml $239 special, 23 bottles available
Vinous 97 Points “The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. A Barolo of raw, unbridled power, the Lazzarito demands patience.”

Vietti Barolo Ravera 2019 750ml $299 special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 100 Points “The 2019 Barolo Brunate is a powerhouse.
