Dominus & Ulysses

Christian Moueix is an iconic winemaker best known for his legendary Bordeaux wines from Château Petrus in Pomerol. Moueix brought his expertise and French winemaking skills to Napa Valley, founding Dominus in Napa Valley and quickly began racking up 100-point reviews.

His vision has shaped Dominus into the force it is today. Despite its French heritage, the wine is defiantly California in tone and style, combining waves of rich fruit and beautiful aromatics with enough tannin to ground the wine. Practicing both dry and organic farming, Christian Moueix’s Dominus produces one of the most terroir expressive wines in the United States.

2018 Mosel Rieslings

Though not a classic vintage by any means, the long, dry, and warm 2018 provided us with delectable wines loaded with flavor and untouched by disease that require minimal cellaring to achieve their full potential. This is great news for anyone looking for wines ready to drink (or even to stock up on some cellar defenders).

Though the heat was a major player in 2018, it ironically helped rein in overripeness. Vines shut down ripening when stressed by the temperatures. David Schildknecht noted, too, that tartaric acid dominated, imparting a “welcome animation” to the riper styles on display. Proper canopy management seemed to help prevent the “baked or cooked aromas” found in the hot 2003 and 2011 vintages.

Saint Cosme somehow combines affordability, luxury, and over 600 years of history into some of the most remarkable wines in the Southern Rhône. Professionals and reviewers consider him one of the region’s greatest winemakers who offers consistently excellent quality and value across the entire portfolio.

Barroul crafts rich and powerful wines with undeniable terroir signatures. To highlight these varying terroirs, the estate bottles a handful of single-vineyard Gigondas, which are the most interesting and coveted wines in the portfolio.

The late Chris Bilbro is a hero of California wine. He founded Marietta Cellars in 1978, growing it into one of the finest producers of value-driven California wines. Chris sadly passed away in 2019, and today his son, Scot Bilbro, runs the winery. The lineup is as good as it’s ever been: full of delicious, gutsy wines that over-deliver at all prices (that max out at a mere $40). If these had “Napa” on the label, you wouldn’t blink if these were triple the price.

Château des Jacques: Jadot in Beaujolais

Louis Jadot purchased their Moulin-à-Vent estate in 1996, becoming one of the first major Burgundy houses with significant holdings in the region. Their vineyards including holdings in some of the most famous Beaujolais crus of Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, and Fleurie. These vineyards are notable for their pink granite soils, unique to the region, on which Gamay excels.

Since taking over the estate, Maison Jadot has added organic and biodynamic practices, less with a mind towards certification than towards the health and character of each parcel.

The hand harvested grapes are rigorously sorted and destemmed before undergoing Burgundian winemaking techniques such as long macerations, natural fermentation, and barrel maturation.
