Barolo is awash in famous names and infamously high pricing. Fortunately, several estates can still be found that offer the unusual combination of high quality and affordable pricing. One such estate is Paolo Scavino.
Enrico Scavino led the estate for over 70 years until his passing last year. He experimented with different techniques to find the best production methods while never compromising on fruit quality or the cleanliness of the winery. Today, his daughters, Elisa and Enrica, oversee the winery, ensuring its continued legacy of quality. They vinify each parcel separately and age the Barolos in large casks. Any grapes or wine that don’t meet their high standards are sold off in bulk, which can be up to 30% of their production in a given vintage.
With access to some of Barolo’s most prized vineyards and a winemaking team that embraces the best of both modern and traditional techniques, the Scavino wines are arguably the smartest buys in Barolo today. Rich and powerful in their youth, the wines are built to age. Their true greatness develops after time in the cellar – something that can’t be said about all of Scavino’s modernist peers.
It would be difficult to find a Barolo producer that offers a better value: Paolo Scavino’s rigorous quality standards seem ludicrous when the costs are considered, especially during our three-day sale.

“Enrico Scavino, of the celebrated Paolo Scavino winery, was among an elite group of winemakers who would later become known as the ‘Barolo Boys.’ This tight-knit group of visionaries raised the bar on quality by incorporating techniques from outside the Langhe (such as the use of barrique and rotofermenters). They traveled far and wide across the great wine regions of the world, and the information they brought back home would contribute to the rise of Barolo as one of the world’s most coveted wines.” -Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
We offer twenty in-stock Paolo Scavino options on sale now, including:
Paolo Scavino Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 91 points “The 2020 Barolo is seriously beautiful. Pliant and creamy, with terrific depth, the 2020 impresses with its bold, open-knit personality. A burst of dark red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, mint and spice lend notable character to this decidedly exuberant Barolo from the Scavino family.”
Paolo Scavino Bric dël Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ points “The 2017 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another gorgeous wine in the line up from the Scavino family. Readers will find a Barolo that is more nuanced and less bombastic than in the past. Bric del Fiasc has plenty of power on its own, so this style works so well. Dried rose petal, mint, spice, kirsch and iron all blossom with a bit of coaxing. I can’t wait to see how it ages.”
Paolo Scavino Bric dël Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $94.50, that’s $89.78 at 5% off and $85.05 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Paolo Scavino Bric dël Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points “The 2019 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is the hallmark wine of the estate, and it shows. Taking on more concentration, it is pure and generous with kirsch, star anise, nutmeg, and menthol and moves impressively to the palate with ease and nobility. It offers fantastic depth while remaining true to the vintage and propels forward through an arch of acidity, while having grounded notes of Earl Grey tea, black cherry, and crushed stones as well as ripe tannins. Drink 2026-2046.”
Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “Located in Roddi, the 2017 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is marked by perfume of chalky earth, violets, and kirsch. The palate moves into dark fruits, with ripe currant, sweet tobacco, and tannins that emerge on the finish. Hold for 2-4 years and drink 2024-2042. Helmed by fourth generation winemaker Elisa Scavino, the estate owns and manages 30 hectares spanning eight of the 11 communes of the Barolo region and is based in Castiglione Falletto. Since 2007, they have implemented the use of a netted, submerged cap cylindrical system developed by Elisa’s father, Enrico, which achieves a delicate extraction during fermentation. They have moved to slower, longer fermentation periods, and as of 2018 will only be utilizing large casks. In the vineyard, there is great attention to the compression of the soils, creating a healthy ecosystem rich in oxygen and microorganisms and a sustainable approach.”
Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points “This is more open than other single vineyard releases from Scavino with plum, raspberry and black cherry aromas with hints of honeysuckle. Some wet earth. Full-bodied with chewy tannins on the palate. Hints of citrus skin. Pure. Needs time to soften. “
Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2020 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is a complex, alluring wine. Dried herbs, menthol, licorice, sage, mocha and lavender play off a core of purplish/black fruit. Dark and sensual, but not at all heavy, the 2020 has a ton to offer in a plush, immediate style. This is a very sexy Barolo.”
Paolo Scavino Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $66, that’s $62.70 at 5% off and $59.40 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2017 Barolo Monvigliero is classy and polished right out of the gate. Sweet dark cherry, rose petal, mint and cinnamon are some of the nuances that open in the glass. Even with all of its immediacy, the 2017 has plenty of tannin. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years. The 2017 is undoubtedly an attractive wine, but its best days lie ahead.”
Paolo Scavino Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “Scavino’s 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is bright and aromatically effusive, as Barolos from this site tend to be, but on the palate, it is quite a bit more reserved – Dried fruit, tobacco, mint and worn-in leather linger. Ideally, I would like to see more Monvigliero sensuality here.”
Paolo Scavino Prapò, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $75, that’s $71.25 at 5% off and $67.50 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “Taking on a deeper profile, the 2019 Barolo Prapo exudes notes of kirsch, black licorice, polished leather, and lavender. Full-bodied and approachable, its refined, ripe tannins do well to accept the ripeness of the fruit that remains pure. It has a silkiness in its texture and fruit profile without losing structure and delivers notes of black tea, truffle, and blackberry as well as a long finish. Drink 2025-2045.”
Paolo Scavino Prapò, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2020 Barolo Prapò is another impressive wine from the Scavino family in this vintage. Dark and somber, with plenty of Serralunga tannin, the 2020 impresses with its superb balance and class. Dark fruit, iron, leather, menthol and espresso build as this dramatic, wonderfully resonant Barolo shows off its stylish personality. Elegance and power.”
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2017 Barolo Ravera is dazzling. Deep, potent and virile, the 2017 has a lot to say, but it won’t be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, smoke, game, lavender and licorice convey a real impression of gravitas that is reinforced by the wine’s overall feel. This powerhouse Barolo is magnificent today in a sort of old-school meets new-school style.”
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points “Moving over to Novello, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Ravera is slightly more simplistic in this vintage with a tart cherry element that opens loud over the bouquet. You might also notice crushed white pepper, salty limestone and crushed earth. The wine remains subtle in texture with silky tannins and medium weight. Some 6,500 bottles were made.”
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $75, that’s $71.25 at 5% off and $67.50 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “Aromatically more expressive and ripe with red flowers and fruits, the 2019 Barolo Ravera is more exuberant and open at this stage, with candied cherry, menthol, and sweet balsamic herbs. The palate takes a more savory and coiled stance at this youthful stage, with iron-rich earth, grenadine, and salted orange. Building tannins are in concert with a persistent spine of acidity that will need time to loosen its grip, but this is a fantastic wine to hold and drink 2026-2046.”
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94+ points “The 2020 Barolo Ravera is sleek, elegant and polished. It offers a captivating mix of the savory/mineral intensity of this site and the slightly smaller-scaled structure of the year. Black cherry, lavender, sage, coffee, mint and gravel abound. Elisa Scavino has done a terrific job softening the potent Ravera tannins. I can’t wait to see how this ages.”
Paolo Scavino Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $135, that’s $128.25 at 5% off and $121.50 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a new wine in the range. It takes the place of the Carobric, which was a blend of Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. A few years ago the Scavinos lost their lease on Cannubi, which impacted their ability to continue to make Carobric with the customary blend. That may have turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the new Rocche di Castiglione is off the charts. Silky, aromatic and pliant, with striking textural depth, the 2020 is immediately captivating. The purity of flavors is just breathtaking. What a wine!”
Paolo Scavino Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva was released in January of 2019, and once again it looks to be a top prize. Licorice and flowers dominate the bouquet, and its beautiful red fruit is generous throughout. This wine has always been a beauty and consistently has had a high price tag to reflect that quality, going back to the first vintages of the 1990s. It has regularly sold for about $200 every year for the last decade. These vines are old, some of them very old (reaching the ripe age of 60 years old in 1990s, when many of them were replanted with carefully selected clones), producing an elegance and concentration that brings intensity and a high standard of aromas. This Barolo without a doubt shows its pedigree and a quality of noble perfumes that demonstrate characteristics of the greatest Nebbiolo vintages, all delivered with excellent concentration. The magic lingers on the palate, right up to the finish.”

Grape of the Week
Albariño
Through the Lens of Do Ferreiro & Nanclares
The beautiful Spanish coastal region of Rias Baixas is famous for its delicious seafood, spectacular vistas, and exquisite white wines crafted from Albariño. Some of the finest vineyards lie close to the sea along the steep mountainsides. The ocean breezes and blankets of fog result in a cool growing area, creating the building blocks for an invigorating and savory wines with surprising aging potential.
Two of our favorite producers of high quality Albariño are Do Ferreiro and Nanclares. Working with old vines (up to 200 years old!) and traditional methods, these producers craft Albariño comparable with a fine Chablis or GG Riesling. If you love deeply soulful, mineral drenched whites, you owe it to yourself to pick some up and see the true potential of Albariño.

Do Ferreiro Adina Albariño, Rias Baixas 2022 750ml $59 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94+ points “The one Albariño that is different is the 2022 Adina, from gneiss soils and with a wider palate, despite having similar parameters to the others. It has pungent flavors, balsamic and herbal, with good ripeness and a bitter twist in the finish. 3,000 bottles.”
Do Ferreiro Albariño Cepas Vellas, Rias Baixas 2022 750ml $79 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2022 Albariño Cepas Vellas feels quite reductive and difficult to read on the nose. It took time to open up, but the palate showed the depth, balance and clout of the wine from minute one. It’s dense and intense, with crystalline purity and great length, leaving a strong rocky sensation like the old vines really feed on the granite.”
Nanclares Y Prieto O Bocoi Vello de Silvia Albariño, Rias Baixas 2021 750ml $39 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2021 O Bocoi Vello de Silvia comes from three vineyards and was foot trodden, then fermented and matured in a very old chestnut cask (“bocoi” is a large oak cask). It’s very perfumed and aromatic. It had some time with the skins early on, and that made it very expressive, with a little deeper color and nose. The palate is vibrant and sharp, with 11% alcohol and notable acidity, a little lighter than the 2022. There were 2,500 bottles produced.”
Nanclares y Prieto Porta Franca Aberta Albariño, Rias Baixas 2021 750ml $49 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points “The no-sulfur-added 2021 Porta Franca Aberta is Albariño from a vineyard in Dena. It is expressive and vibrant, with moderate alcohol (12%), very alive and fresh, tasty, with a salty twist. It was bottled directly from one 450-liter barrel that filled some 500 bottles.”
