Envinate

We’ve been madly in love with the terroir-driven Spanish wines of Envínate for years. The wines buzz with energy, capturing the terroir of their respective regions as if by magic. The methods of this group of winemakers, friends Alfonso Torrente, José Ángel Martínez, Laura Ramos, and Roberto Santana, are low-intervention in the winery and an ultra-traditional, minimalist approach in the vineyards. They are one of the forerunners of the “New Spanish” wine movement.

It’s worth emphasizing how profoundly this movement has impacted Spain’s image in the world of wine. Before, Rioja was essentially shorthand for Spanish wine and all other regions seemed to follow suit with big, ripe flavors, high alcohol, and so, so much oak.

Kelley Fox makes some of the most elegant and captivating wines in all of the Willamette Valley—fresh and delicate with a palate-pleasing intricacy. Oregon Chardonnay

What makes Oregon wine so special? What magic that lives in these lands can be captured in a bottle? Could it be the essence of its pioneering community-driven people, its strata of soil types and elevations planted mostly to Burgundian varieties? Maybe the majesty is only revealed when observed and imbibed by admirers—near and far. Or could it be some subtle alchemy that combines all of the above together to gift us something greater than the sum of its parts?

When we see the smile of a winemaker as he shares a sip from a treasured barrel or the grape grower stooping in the field to prune her cherished vines, we’re joining hands with the story of this humble paradise.

Burgundy on the Move

Faiveley

The modern incarnation of Faiveley began in 2007 when the seventh generation of Faiveleys took over management: siblings Eve and Erwan Faiveley. They have transformed the winemaking, retaining the age-worthiness that defined the domaine, while coaxing out more youthful charm.

The wines of Faiveley, while always of superlative quality, were more often described as concentrated, stern, and ageable instead of approachable and charming. It could be why they tended to capture the hearts in their native country than in America: the French people and restaurants have more patience and inclination for cellaring.

Even small changes to the style of a domaine dating back to 1825 is considered revolutionary in Burgundy, and there were a number of people who were afraid that the transition would ruin one of the anchors of the region.

Bründlmayer

Austrian wines rarely get the attention they deserve despite the dedicated love of wine nerds and sommeliers. If Austrians crafted their wines in France, these biodynamic, single-vineyard, Grand Cru, and food-friendly gems from thousand-year-old wineries would be three times as expensive. Instead, we get the best value high end whites in the world.

The Kamptal region in Austrian is the slightly less famous brother to the Wachau. As a result, the best wines are somehow an even better value. The quality is on par, so the wines from the likes of Bründlmayer end up being the best deals across the Old World.
