Weingut Künstler
Weingut Künstler is one of the Rheingau’s most compelling modern estates, rooted in history and driven by precision. The winery was founded in 1965 by Franz Künstler, who relocated his family to Germany from what is now the Czech Republic in the aftermath of World War II. Today, the estate is led by his son, Günter Künstler, a graduate of Geisenheim University whose focus on dry Riesling has helped redefine the reputation of the Rheingau for a new generation.
Based in Hochheim, Künstler farms vineyards in one of Germany’s most historically revered wine towns. Long before regions like the Mosel gained international fame, Hochheim and the broader Rheingau were celebrated for producing Rieslings of depth, power, and longevity. For centuries, these wines commanded extraordinary prestige, often fetching prices that rivaled or exceeded those of Bordeaux on early wine lists. Writers, statesmen, and poets alike — including Shakespeare, Thomas Jefferson, and Goethe — praised Rheingau wines for their distinction and nobility.
Today, Weingut Künstler plays a central role in restoring that legacy. The estate’s lineup of Grosses Gewächs Rieslings comes from top Rheingau sites and captures the region’s hallmark combination of mineral drive, precision, and generous fruit weight. These are wines that feel authoritative yet refined, reflecting a place where Riesling has always reached its most complete and expressive form. They are powerful without heaviness, structured yet finely balanced, and they age with the kind of grace that defined Rheingau’s greatest wines of the past. These are Rieslings that reward both immediate enjoyment and patient cellaring.
Right now, we’re excited to feature Weingut Künstler on sale, offering a rare opportunity to explore one of the Rheingau’s most respected estates at exceptional value. For drinkers who gravitate toward dry Riesling with substance, precision, and a strong sense of place, these wines belong firmly on your short list. Whether you’re discovering Künstler for the first time or revisiting a longtime favorite, this is an ideal moment to secure bottles that reflect both the heritage and the future of Germany’s original Riesling stronghold.

Then comes the full-bodied, densely packed palate that is still so clean. So much depth at the spectacular, wide-screen finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” Wine Advocate 92 points “The Riesling trocken 2020 Hochheimer Hölle Im Neuenberg VDP. Erste Lage opens with a deep, rich, intense, elegant and yeasty scented bouquet of ripe and dense but coolish Riesling fruits intertwined with earthy notes. Remarkably fine, fresh and elegant on the palate for a Hölle Riesling, this is a medium rather than full-bodied wine with refreshing, vivacious and finely racy acidity. Good grip on the mouthwatering finish. 12.5% stated alcohol.”
