Turley Wine Cellars
Few wineries in California have shaped the modern understanding of Zinfandel as profoundly as Turley Wine Cellars. Founded in the early 1990s by Larry Turley, the estate began with a simple but radical idea: preserve California’s oldest vineyards and allow them to speak clearly, without cosmetic winemaking. At a time when many historic Zinfandel plantings were being pulled out or replanted, Turley committed to rescuing and farming these sites, setting the stage for one of the most distinctive portfolios in American wine.
Larry Turley’s path to wine was anything but conventional. A former emergency room physician, he brought an analytical mind and deep sense of purpose to viticulture, focusing on dry-farmed, head-trained vines, many of them planted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These old vines produce naturally low yields, resulting in wines of density and concentration without excess weight. More importantly, they carry the imprint of place with remarkable clarity, turning Zinfandel into a transparent lens for site rather than a single, monolithic style.
The torch was passed seamlessly to Tegan Passalacqua, now one of California’s most respected winemakers and viticulturists. Under Tegan’s guidance, Turley has doubled down on precision and restraint, refining extraction and emphasizing balance while preserving the power that defines the wines. Each vineyard is vinified separately, and that decision is central to Turley’s identity. From Paso Robles to Lodi, Amador County to Napa Valley, every bottling reflects a specific soil type, climate, and vine age, often from parcels exceeding 80 to 100 years old.
This is what makes Turley’s Zinfandels so singular. No two vineyards taste alike, and Turley embraces that diversity rather than smoothing it out. Some wines lean toward dark fruit and spice, others toward red berries, savory herbs, or iron-rich minerality. All share a common thread of vitality, depth, and authenticity that only old vines can deliver. These are wines that feel alive, rooted in history, and deeply expressive.
For lovers of Zinfandel, Turley stands apart not just as a producer, but as a steward of California’s vinous heritage. Each bottle is a snapshot of a disappearing vineyard and a reminder of what this grape can achieve when treated with respect and patience.

Turley Wine Cellars Old Vine Zinfandel 2022 750ml Displayed price $34.90, that’s $33.15 at 5% off, and $31.41 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now Wine Advocate 92 points “As with the Juvenile bottling, the 2022 Zinfandel Old Vines punches above its weight in this vintage. The nose is considerably deeper, fuller and more polished, opening with aromas of crushed plums, wild berry preserves, tobacco leaves and similar autumnal accents to its younger sibling. The palate is light- to medium-bodied, carrying through the polished quality of the nose and melds it with a subtly dusty tannin structure and bright acidity. The finish is straightforward and easy to drink, offering generous layers of fruit, spice and floral notes.”
