James Suckling 94 points
“Decadent aromas of flor, nuts and creamy cheese, as well as honey and dried lemon and apple. Focused and precise, with a dense, compact palate and a flavorful finish. Nutty and spicy at the end. Bottled in a hock bottle, which is different and fun and from the Miraflores area. Drink and enjoy.”

In Italy’s far northeastern corner, Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of the country’s great hidden gems. Framed by the Alps to the north, Slovenia to the east, and the Adriatic Sea to the south, it’s a cultural crossroads where Latin, Slavic, and Germanic influences converge. This mix of history and geography gives Friuli’s wines their unmistakable edge—wines that are expressive, textured, and unlike anything made elsewhere in Italy.

Friuli is best known for its whites, often ranked among the finest in the country. Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, and Malvasia Istriana shine with purity and mineral drive, while Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay take on a distinctive Friulian character thanks to the region’s gravelly plains and hillside vineyards.

Dönnhoff

The Nahe is one of Germany’s most compelling wine regions. Combining the heft of the Rheingau with the elegance and minerality inherent in the Mosel, the region offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. Anyone who knows the wines knows that praise is well deserved.

Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers.  They excel with both dry and off-dry wines, producing some of the top dozen Rieslings in nearly every vintage. Their privileged location in the Nahe, includes some of the finest and most geologically diverse vineyards in all of Germany. The other part is the exceptional drive and focus of this father and son duo, who will stop at nothing to produce the best wines in Germany.

Envinate

Envínate has drawn international praise and attention, with particular notice from Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate and multiple reviewers at James Suckling. Their wines are highly sought-after by collectors for their authenticity and ability to capture the terroir of these less-well-known regions. These are fascinating, age-worthy expressions of “New Spain” wines that are not to be missed, especially not at these prices.

The wines buzz with energy, capturing the terroir of their respective regions as if by magic. But it’s no trick to what makes these wines superb: it’s hard work in the vines and low intervention in the winery that result in such spellbinding cuvées.

Arnaud Lambert

Arnaud Lambert makes being one of the most important producers in the coveted Saumur wines regions of Brézé and Saint-Cyr-En-Bourg look easy. While the famous (and infamously expensive) Clos Rougeard’s cult classic blanc comes from Brézé, Lambert offers us access to this special place without the three-digit entry fee.

Brézé is geologically diverse, but characterized by the airy limestone that dots the finest vineyards in this part of the Loire. The wines, therefore, have a mineral-edge and delicate tone to them that’s unique.

By contrast, Saint-Cyr-En-Bourg has more clay in the topsoil, which produces wines of more overt power and structure. Both the reds and whites here seem to have an earthiness and weight about them that sets them apart from their Brézé neighbors.
