Decanter 94 points “This Arnot Roberts Syrah blends three distinct coastal sites: Solas, Baker Lane, and their flagship vineyard, Que Syrah. The wine makes a bold statement from the start, showcasing a deep purple colour in the glass that fits its powerful aromas and flavours like a glove. Expect rich black and blue fruit notes of blackberries, currants, and plums, with floral aromas of violets and lavender and a classic fresh grind of pepper with a slightly herbal, savoury finish. The tannins are a bit grippy, but it’s a delicious wine overall. (Drink between 2025-2030).”

Decanter 95 points “This fragrant Syrah is sourced from two sites in the chilly coastal pocket of the Bien Nacido vineyard in the Santa Maria valley: the X block planted in 1973 and the higher elevation Z block planted in 1990. Despite its lean frame, it’s a glistening, lipsmacking wine with cutting blackberry and cassis flavours. Nervy and revitalising, with a cool, granitic undertow. (Drink between 2024-2036).”

Jeb Dunnuck 97+ points “One of the bigger, richer wines in the lineup, the 2021 Syrah Armada Vineyard comes from a high-density vineyard located just beside the cellar and was brought up all in demi-muids. This deeper ruby/plum-hued Syrah boasts a big, masculine bouquet of smoked red and black fruits, sauteed mushrooms, cured meats, iron, and cold fireplace nuances (it almost has a Graves-like character) that flows to a medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated Syrah with terrific overall balance, ripe tannins, and a great finish. As with the other 2021s here, it needs lots of air to show at its best and will ideally be given 4-5 years in the cellar. It’s going to hit its 20th birthday in fine form.”

Smoked meat, black olives, crushed violets and thyme are layered with blackberries and a hint of iodine. The palate is deep and structured, balancing juicy acidity with fine but broad and dusty tannins. The savory finish lingers, showing cracked pepper and turned earth. Stored for 15 months in all neutral oak barrels, this opens with suggestions of black tea, Mandarin orange zest and exotic spices alongside beef brisket, Kalamata olive, charcuterie and smoldering stones. The palate is plush and soft with a pillowy texture and beautiful underlying acidity. Salty and savory, enjoy this beauty now and over the next eight years.”

Hoisin sauce and BBQ beef rib aromatics parade with shades of lavender, bay leaf and rich boysenberry fruits on the nose. The palate is polished and soft with a seamless texture and excellent sense of weight despite the coolness of the vintage. Concentrated and intense, enjoy this heady version of ‘The Tribe’ now and over the next eight to ten years.”
