Viñedos de Páganos’ El Puntido Gran Reserva:
A Monumental Rioja
“Established in 1998 as a micro-project of the Eguren family’s Viñedos Sierra Cantabria, this bodega produces single-site wines from two vineyards, El Puntido and La Nieta, which are in the tiny village of Páganos. This is clearly a labor of love as the vineyards, mostly old Tempranillo, are impeccably maintained. Readers who appreciate more subtle oak influence might not be impressed with the wines when they are young, but I have found that patience yields great rewards when it comes to bringing things into harmony.” -Josh Raynolds, Vinous
Viñedos de Páganos El Puntido Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2013 750ml $89 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2013 El Puntido Gran Reserva started very shy and closed; it took time to open up to slowly unfurl the more tertiary notes, despite its youth. It reveals great complexity and nuance. It’s a triumph over the adverse conditions of a challenging year like 2013, a year with a lot of rain and a cold summer with lots of cloudy days when people thought the grapes were not going to ripen. It has a classical nose with notes of cherries in liqueur, cigar ash, decayed leaves and truffles with the spiciness from the 28 months in new French oak barrels and a lactic touch. The palate is polished, sleek and elegant. In 2018, they changed the fermentation vessels from stainless steel to concrete, but we’ll have to wait a few years to see that… 5,000 bottles produced. It has been in bottle since March 2016. It should be long lived and make old bones.”
Joaquín Hidalgo-Vinous 95 points “The 2013 Gran Reserva El Puntido comes from a 1976 vineyard in Páganos, Laguardia. Elegantly evolved, it offers dried cherry, integrated aging notes, soft spices and a trace of menthol floating over delicate tertiary aromas. On the palate, fine-grained and active tannins create a framework for the fruit and juiciness to spread over, with firm grip and sustained freshness. This speaks clearly of its home, combining purity, structure and identity. Long-lasting and supple, it sets a compelling benchmark for Rioja’s aging potential.”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points “Saturated crimson. Spice-accented cherry, dark berry, vanilla and floral pastille scents take on smoky mineral and baking spice qualities with air. Shows fine definition and spicy lift on the palate, which offers appealingly sweet cherry cola, mulberry, candied rose and spicecake flavors that fan out slowly through the back half. The floral note returns on the impressively long, subtly tannic finish, which shows firm tension and repeating florality. 30% whole clusters and 40% new French oak.”

Rutherford Hill AJT Collection Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 2023 750ml $21.90 special, 11 bottles in stock now
“Made in a mix of new and used French oak and stainless steel, the 2023 AJT Collection Sauvignon Blanc includes a substantial 13% Sauvignon Gris. Marked by scents of grapefruit, pear and fig, with just a hint of garden peas, it’s medium-bodied, plump and soft. While it lacks a bit of energy and drive, especially from a 2023, it’s very gulpable.” Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate

Tommasi Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore, Veneto 2021 750ml $26.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Ned Goodwin MW-James Suckling 92 points “A delicious Ripasso that demonstrates less is more when it comes to the use of Amarone pomace and its dried-fruit influence on the style. Tightly wound, detailed and nobly bitter, this mid-weighted and exceptionally savory expression challenges those clumsy examples that resemble ersatz Amarone. Alpine hints, bitter red cherries, licorice root and oranges. Dusty oak tannins compress the seams nicely. Fresh, lithe and ready for the sophisticated table. Textbook. Drink or hold.”

A thread of herbal tannins guide the flavors to an effortless, almost guilty pleasure, accentuated by a noble bitterness at the finish. Thrills with a chill! No revews for 2022 vintage. 2021 review provided for reference.
Tim Atkin 95 points “Vivid garnet color. Juicy and spicy on the palate with red fruit and black and white pepper flavors. Accents of coffee and minerality. Elegant, fine, and delicate, but supported by firm tannins.”
Dominio de Pingus ‘PSI’, Ribera del Duero 2022 750ml $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93-95 points “The 2022 PSI is clean, expressive and open, much more approachable than the more reductive 2021 that I tasted next to it. It’s primary, fruit-driven and precise. “The fruit selection was better in 2022,” explained Sisseck. It has contained ripeness and a polished texture and is sleek and elegant, with fine tannins. It feels like a step up from 2021. This was also the final blend waiting to be bottled-clarified, sulfur added and everything, so pretty much the wine that is going to be bottled.”

Clos Mogador Gratallops, Priorat DOCa 2022 750ml $99 special, 25 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 97 points “Their single-vineyard 2022 Clos Mogador, they flagship wine, was produced with a blend of grapes, mostly Garnacha and Cariñena but also some Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (less and less, as they are regrafting most of them). It fermented with 40% full clusters and matured in 2,000- and 2,500-liter oak foudres; some are old barriques, to avoid having too much new oak, and some lots finish aging in concrete to complete some 20 months. They have implemented some changes, moving toward larger volumes, abandoning the barriques and moving to foudre (with the low volumes in 2024, the wine will be only in foudre). It has a very Mediterranean nose with plenty of dry hay and straw notes, the classical wet slate notes, very Priorat too, and it has a round palate and very fine, chalky tannins. It’s serious and harmonious and feels relaxed, without any excess. It comes in at 14% alcohol with 5.4 grams of acidity and a bone-dry finish. None of the 2022s showed excess heat or ripeness. The alcohol is contained and integrated, and the wines are balanced and harmonious but with a more Mediterranean profile. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.”

Espectacle del Montsant, Montsant 2022 750ml $136 special, 22 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 98 points “The 2022 Espectacle del Montsant was produced exclusively with Garnacha from an ancient plot in the village of La Figuera in Montsant at more than 600 meters above sea level on limestone and clay soils. The clusters were stored at cool temperature for 24 hours, put through a sorting table and destemmed. The grapes fermented in a new 4,000-liter French oak vat, where it had numerous pump-overs and punch-downs and a four-to-five-week maceration. After pressing, it matured in that same oak vat for 14 to 16 months. This is always a ripe and powerful wine, and in the warm and dry 2022, it’s no exception; it hits 15% alcohol and has a pH of 3.68. Despite everything, the wine has a pale, bright ruby color and the spectacular nose of flowers, wild berries and aromatic herbs. It’s hedonistic, showy and decadent, incredibly fine-boned and elegant, with a fragile characteristic, energetic and profound. You don’t notice the ripeness or alcohol at all. Always explosive and showy, this is a wine that makes heads turn. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024. Since 2023, this vineyard has been cultivated by Christian Barbier, once the grower that used to cultivate it, Joan Anguera, retired.”

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 91 points “This is such a joyful expression of the gamay grape with effusive summer berry fruit, including a good amount of raspberries. Juicy and zesty with so much vibrancy on the light- to medium-bodied palate. Surprising depth and length considering the the sleek frame of this wine. From organically grown grapes grown in Lancie, which is part of the Beaujolais-Villages appellation. Drink now.”
Jean-Paul Brun Domaine des Terres Dorees Beaujolais l’Ancien 2023 750ml $21.90 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Winemaker Note “Made from Jean-Paul’s oldest vines, which grow in tighter bunches with fewer and smaller, thicker-skinned berries, yielding more concentrated flavor. The grapes are harvested late with a naturally high sugar level. The wine is vinified using traditional Burgundy techniques. Deeply colored with rich red-fruit aroma and flavor and soft tannins.”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Fleurie 2022 750ml $31.90 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “This wine is a blend made from the great parcels owned within the appellation by the Chāteau des Jacques, namely Bel Air, Grille-Midi and Cercillon. They are located at an altitude above 300 m on a winding place. The pink granite varies from one vineyard parcel to another (depth and alteration), lending the wine complexity…With a beautiful deep cherry colour, red fruits flesh and flowers aromas, this Fleurie is rich, delicate and smooth. It is a very lush and voluptuous wine.”

Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin-a-Vent 2022 750ml $31.90 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 91 points “The 2022 Moulin-à-Vent has a sapid, marine-tinged bouquet, hints of shucked oyster shell infusing the dark berry fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly furry tannins, spicier than the Morgon, with a little more edginess and pepperiness on the finish. Very fine. (Drink between 2024-2032).”
Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue ‘Cailloux’ 2022 750ml $41.90 special, 31 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 94 points “The Bellevue “Cailloux” bottling from Domaine Bouland is made from vines that are over sixty years of age in this climat age and planted on granitic soils. The 2022 Bellevue “Cailloux” is nicely ripe in the style of the vintage, coming in at fourteen percent octane, but vibrant and utterly pure on both the nose and palate. The beautiful bouquet delivers an aromatic constellation of sweet dark berries, black cherries, woodsmoke, spit-roasted pigeon, black tea, fresh thyme and a superb base of granitic minerality. On the palate the wine is bright, focused and full-bodied, with a rock solid core of fruit, great mineral undertow and grip, ripe, firm tannins and excellent balance on the long, nascently complex and very promising finish. This is a classic bottle of young Morgon from a great vintage and will demand plenty of cellaring time before it softens up to drink. It will be very long-lived and a great wine once the tannins start to peel away. 2033-2085.”
Daniel Bouland Morgon Les Delys Vieilles Vignes 2022 750ml $46.50 special, 20 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 96 points “The 2022 vintage of Daniel Bouland’s Morgon “Delys 1926″ is a brilliant young Cru Beaujolais. The wine comes in at an even fourteen percent in this vintage and offers up truly stunning depth of fruit on both the nose and palate, as these ancient vines have dug deep into the subterranean water sources to keep maturity progressing flawlessly in this dry growing season. The wine wafts from the glass in a complex and sappy blend of sweet dark berries, black cherries, pomegranate, grilled pigeon, dark soil tones, espresso woodsmoke and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is pure, sappy and full-bodied, with a bottomless core of old vine fruit, fine-grained, buried tannins, great focus and grip and a long, seamlessly balanced and very complex finish. This is one of the greatest young bottles of Morgon I have ever had the pleasure to taste and it would be insane not to allow it at least some time in the cellar to unlock its secondary and tertiary layers of complexity. 2029-2085.”

Stunning concentration and a wonderfully creamy texture on the medium-bodied palate. Extremely long and silky finish with fabulous balance and precision. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

Schloss Gobelsburg, a Cistercian monastic estate, is one of the oldest wineries in the Austrian Danube area. Its documented history dates back to 1171. Centuries of experience in the vineyards that surround the Gobelsburg castle have led to intimate knowledge of the soils and microclimates that influence the characteristics of their Gruner Veltliner and Riesling.
The house style emphasizes the character of the terroir in a way that respects the winemaking tradition of the monks that previously managed the estate. They don’t use modern winemaking technology like pumps, instead favoring traditional tools such as the massive neutral oak casks for aging.
Beyond their historical pedigree, this is a benchmark producer with an incredibly diverse portfolio. The style is complex and vivacious while still offering some of the best values in the wine world. These are simply in a class above and apart from all others, as striking in their elegance and complexity as they are in their ability to move both your mind and soul.

Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Riesling, Kamptal DAC 2024 750ml $26 pre-arrival special, 24 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2024 Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Kamptal Riesling is coolish, precise and spicy on the terroir-driven nose. Unmistakably Kamptal Riesling, it has bright and juicy fruit, delicate spice and irresistible charm. On the palate, it is initially youthful and racy, then turns elegantly juicy, savory and delicately bitter, and it has textured length with fine, almost peppery tannins. This is an authentic, saline and classy Riesling for little money. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in April 2025.”
Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner, Kamptal DAC 2024 750ml $24 pre-arrival special, 24 bottles available
“The 2024 Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Kamptal Grüner Veltliner opens with an intense and vinous bouquet of yellow seed fruits intermingled with saline notes of crushed rocks and green leaves. The wine is round and charming on the textural palate and more supple than the Domæne Veltiner. This is a medium-bodied Kamptal with quite intense and persistent fruit and tender minerality. Fine tannins and bitters make this an excellent, textured food wine. 12.5% stated alcohol.” – Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate

Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Cistercien Rosé, Niederosterreich 2024 750ml $24 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles available
Billy Norris-Vinous 90 points “The 2024 Rosé Cistercien is a deeply mineral wine. Acids here are driving and persistent, cutting like a tornado across a cornfield. The intensely chalky, rocky minerality is the main attraction, as there’s not much fruit or aromatic expression to speak of. That said, I like this for its distinctiveness and particularly terroir-driven feel–something that is highly unique in the world of Rosé.”
