Faiveley
The superlative wines of Faiveley, while always known for their quality, were not always known for immediate approachability. Concentrated, stern, and cellar-worthy were more apt descriptors. It could be why the wines are more likely to find a home in their native country: the French people and their restaurants have more patience and inclination for cellaring.
It took the new generation to ease the winery into approachability. The wines became softer while still offering the potential to age with grace.
This modern incarnation of Faiveley began in 2007 when Francois Faiveley retired and his children, Erwan and Eve Faiveley, became the seventh generation to manage the Domaine. The siblings have transformed the winemaking, retaining the age-worthiness that the domaine was known for, but also bringing out more youthful charm.
Even small changes to the style of a domaine that dates back to 1825 are considered revolutionary in Burgundy, and there were a number of people who were afraid that the transition would ruin one of the anchors of the region. Fortunately, when the first wines of the new generation started appearing, the results were reassuringly delicious, and the changes not nearly as drastic as anticipated.
In general, the whites are still simultaneously silky and muscular, the reds still exceptionally pure and elegant. And all the while many of the wines were showing heightened aromatics and a softer feel on the palate. Village level wines were easy to enjoy immediately, and even most Premier Cru wines were showing themselves well after a brief introduction of air. The Grand Cru holdings were still built for the long haul, perhaps not quite as dense as under François, but reds still powerful and with substantial silky tannins, and whites crammed full of intense minerality, floral notes and ripe fruits.
The siblings have also expanded their holdings and renovated the southern winery in Mercurey to bring the Côte Chalonnaise wines up to the quality standards of their more famous brethren in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The domaine added temperature-controlled fermentation vats and gravity flow for vinification, a gentler vinification process. Across the board, the overall quality levels are higher than ever, aided, too, by the shift to organic farming.
Today, they hold ten hectares of Grand Cru including the iconic monopole Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru, which the family has held since 1874. This makes Faiveley one of the largest and most important landowners in Burgundy.
From vintage to vintage you’ll find that Faiveley will make among the best examples available. When you find your favorites, buy with confidence. When we’re asked by new collectors who are looking for the Burgundies that they could stash away, yet not regret opening in a moment of weakness, we will turn to Faiveley more often than not. Elisabeth Pichler-Krutzler, daughter of Franz Xaver (F.X.) Pichler, married the highly-regarded Austrian winemaker Erich Krutzler. In 2007, the pair founded the estate of Pichler-Krutlzer. Their winery is based around the great vineyards of the Wachau and produces some of Austria’s most highly regarded wines.
The pair prefer brighter, fresher wines than the style classically produced at F.X. (which itself is increasingly tending towards lower ripeness and higher acidity). These wines tend to have a more versatility at the table. They’re breathtakingly complex, soulful wines that, like the remarkable wines of Selbach-Oster, are designed to be enjoyed with food and friends.

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2021 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg shows an intense yellow color and opens with a pure yet intense and slightly lactic (?) or yeasty bouquet of ripe and lush, yellow fruits intertwined with notes of crushed, crystalline stones and dark flinty notes. Round and mouth-filling on the palate, this an elegant, intense and textured, savory and finely tannic Loibenberg with a sustainable saline and crystalline finish. This is a fine and elegant, finely textured and fruit-intense Veltliner that fermented longer than the other wines (until the end of January), then aged in a 1,200-liter stück barrel and was bottled at the end of August this year with 13.5% stated alcohol. The wine doesn’t have the precision and finesse of the other Veltliners at this early stage, but it will find itself after years on the bottle. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022.”

The intensely citrus-colored wine shows a flinty, precise, fine and fresh bouquet with ripe stone fruit aromas and spices of crunchy crystalline stones. Creamy textured, ripe, lush and very elegant, with some attractive oak notes but fine tannins, this is a sensual, well-balanced and perfectly round Pfaffenberg that has to be marketed as Kremstal Reserve because the oak influence was too dominant for the DAC tasters in Krems. There is 14.5% alcohol, which you don’t feel due to the mineral freshness and elegance. Tasted at the domain in June 2021.”

The acidity is enormous here (9.4 grams per liter), and the piquancy is well interwoven here with the extract. This is a wine to be cellared for at least 3-4 years. 13.5% stated alcohol. This is a classic Dundee Hills site and is farmed by my friend George Hillberry. When I started this new project I was fortunate that George had a small block left and it beautifully complements my other Dundee Hills Pinot Noir wines. We have 1 acre of the Pommard clone and 1 acre of Wadenswil.”

Max Ferd. Richter
The first thing that jumps out about Max Ferd. Richter wines is the incredible real estate the winery holds. This is an ancient estate, dating back over 300 years and now under the helm of 10th-generation winemaker Constantin Richter. Vineyard management is focused on maximizing quality. Harvest is completely by hand with multiple, meticulous passes through the vineyard to ensure only the finest grapes are harvested. Botrytized grapes are hand-selected at the single berry level.
The Middle Mosel is where all the historic glory of German Riesling rests. Based on their holdings and the quality of their wines, Richter deserves to be a name on par with JJ Prum, Fritz Haag, Willi Schaefer, etc. but poor distribution has prevented them from reaching the level of fame that they deserve (which, frankly, is great for pricing).
In 2018, the Richters leaned in to what Mother Nature provided in the moderately warm and dry vintage. The results are utterly delicious now, but with sugar and acid levels that will do well in the cellar. To quote Mosel Fine Wines’ take on these 2018s, the wines are simply amped up versions of their classic style. These wines show “a touch more ripeness and roundness than usual, but also with the playful side that has made the success of their Estate over the years… All in all, Max Ferd. Richter took the vintage and produced utterly enjoyable and playful wines. One could nearly say: As usual.”

On the palate, this is a generously lush, refined and salty-piquant Auslese with a tight mineral structure and lingering salinity. This is highly refined and extremely stimulating. John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 93 points “The 2020 Haardt Riesling Trocken AP #3 from Weingut Müller-Catoir includes older vines in its constituent components than the Gimmeldingen bottling, as the oldest vines in this bottling are nearly forty-five years of age. It is just a touch lower in acidity as well, coming in at 6.9 grams per liter and carries 4.4 grams per liter of residual sugar and an octane level of 12.5 percent. The wine delivers a refined aromatic constellation of apple, sweet grapefruit, tart orange, a beautifully elegant base of minerality, a touch of wild yeasts, spring flowers, lemongrass and just a hint of beeswax in the upper register. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied and nascently complex, with an excellent core, superb soil undertow, zesty acids, laser-like focus and a long, zesty and extremely promising finish. This is more refined in personality than the slightly more powerful Gimmeldingen, though qualitatively, they are certainly equivalent. Fine juice in the making. 2028-2065. (Jan/Feb 2022).”

David Schildknecht-Vinous 97 points “Corresponding to the most desiccated (yet still virtually botrytis-free) berries picked out from the material that otherwise became this year’s Beerenauslese, here we have one of those phenomenally concentrated Müller-Catoir essays in Rieslaner’s unique dessert wine potential. Take the pear drops, honey and vanilla cream of the corresponding B.A. in all their aromatic intensity and glossy, glowing richness, and add almost buttery textural creaminess and enhanced viscosity set against a blazingly bright and invigorating evocation of fresh pineapple, clementine and lemon. The tension is, to say the least, productive…yet almost unbearable as you work the wine around in your mouth. Any sense of caramelization – such as was prominent in the corresponding Auslese – has been left behind (though perhaps some decades from now it will emerge). Smoky black tea and citrus peels lend piquant counterpoint to a mouth-shakingly vibrant, preternaturally persistent finish. The qualitative curve has in my long experience never before been this steep from Rieslaner Auslese to TBA. ‘If you could have seen how dramatically the grapes differed for each of them,’ noted Franzen, ‘then this wouldn’t surprise you.’”

Remelluri
Telmo Rodríguez is one of the most talented and well-respected winemakers in all of Spain. He spearheads several highly praised projects around the country, including Ladeiras do Xil, Pegaso, and Molino Real, but nothing compares to the wines of his family’s estate: Remelluri.
Originally founded in the 14th century, the estate was purchased by Rodríguez’s father in the 1960s. Telmo and his sister, Amaia Rodríguez Hernandorena, took over the estate in 2010, the same year the estate became fully organic. It’s located in Rioja Alavesa, the smallest subzone. Wines here are known for their intensity and power, which Rodríguez couples with his preference for French oak over American (which he finds too aggressive). To further showcase the fruit and terroir, he only uses sparing amounts of new oak.
The Lindes de Remelluri wines are a collaborative project with neighboring growers in the villages surrounding the Granja Remelluri estate. The project was developed to showcase the unique terroirs of the region. In the 2020 vintage, Telmo expanded the project to encompass six of Rioja’s most important villages: Labastida, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Ábalos, Peciña, Rivas de Tereso, and Salinillas de Buradón.
Labastida represents cooler, higher-elevation sites offering a lower-alcohol wine with complex layers of acidity, perfumed red fruit, and tannin. The Viñedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra is a rich and silky wine, offering a sumptuous red from the rocky soils. For the Ábalos wine, Telmo sourced fruit from the Marqués de Legarda estate. With its high proportion of Graciano, this organic red is stern and austere, promising a rewarding wine with some cellaring.
Peciña, to quote De Maision, offers “perfumed and floral aromatics with notes of Mediterranean herbs, taut acidity, and austere tannins from the high-altitude vineyards.” Rivas de Tereso is a remarkably small hamlet home to only 30 people. Here the limestone soils give a unique mineral impression on the herbal and floral profile. Lastly, Salinillas de Buradón offers up a stony profile from the bush-trained Garnacha and Tempranillo vines grown in the unique combination of quartz, iron-rich clay and blue marl soils.

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The serious and austere new 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Ábalos was produced with grapes on marl and limestone from the Marqués de Legarda, who is mentioned on the label. It’s a blend of 73% Tempranillo, 17% Graciano, 6% Garnacha and 4% other varieties, presented in a straight Bordeaux bottle. It reflects more the character of Haro than the Rioja Alavesa, wines with more Graciano. It’s medium to full-bodied with 14.17% alcohol and has fine-grained, chalky tannins. 13,205 bottles were filled in May 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points “The perfumed and floral 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Peciña is the smallest cuvée from a narrow amphitheater in the parish of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It’s a blend of Tempranillo with 25% Garnacha and therefore presented in a Burgundian bottle, reflecting the high percentage of Garnacha. It has notes of Mediterranean herbs, some coolness from the high altitude of the vineyards and some austerity in the tannins. 7,149 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “Rivas de Tereso are parishes of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, but the difference with the 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Rivas de Tereso is that the vineyards are at higher altitude and the percentage of Garnacha is much higher here (38%), so there’s more mountain character and more herbal notes in the wine. It has 57% Tempranillo and some 5% other varieties. Despite a moderate 13.95% alcohol, the nose shows good ripeness, and there is some wilderness here, perhaps a little more rusticity too. The soils are very stony and rich in limestone, and the altitude gives the wine an austere twist. 19,742 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Salinillas de Buradón, a parish of Labastida, was produced with a blend of 91% Tempranillo, 4% Garnacha and 5% other varieties from south-facing vineyards behind the Sierra de la Cantabria, the last vineyards that they recovered on quartz salt, gypsum and red clay soils. These are the last grapes to be picked, and the wine has 14.22% alcohol but doesn’t show any heat. It comes through as serious, shy and austere, a little closed at first. The tannins are a little rustic, but the wine has a strong mineral streak that made it my favorite from the lot. 20,114 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”
