What is one of the world’s most complex, age-worthy, terroir-driven, aromatically intense, and praised white wines? Vouvray, and its famous grape variety, Chenin Blanc. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more wildly expressive and flexible grape than Chenin. Esteemed for its profundity at all sweetness levels, its wines range from bone-dry (Sec), lightly- to medium-sweet (Demi-Sec), and dessert style (Moelleux).

Granted AOC status in 1936, this commune in the Loire Valley is home to Domaine Huet and Philippe Foreau, two of the finest producers within this glorious region.

They offer the pinnacle of quality for the appellation, though their styles and approaches differ.

Weingut Donnhoff

We at Vinopolis try not to play favorites but wineries like Donnhoff, our beloved jewel of the Nahe, make that a challenging endeavor. When customers come in looking to “get into Riesling,” this is usually the first winery that comes to mind. Yes, the world is a capricious place but year after year you can be sure that a Donnhoff wine will be as close to perfection as the vintage allows.

These Grosses Gewachs selections represent the best of the best wineries. These wines are so focused, so flavorful and complex, that they would be a bargain at twice the price.

Carl Loewen

In the 1980’s and 90’s when the German wine industry was still in terrible disarray, the Loewen family began buying up the steepest, most dilapidated, and unwanted vineyards in Mosel and rehabilitating them. In addition, many of these vineyards still retained super low-yielding, ungrafted, plantings up to 120 years old!

These wines present an authenticity that simply cannot be found from younger plantings or upstart wineries still trying to find their sea-legs.

This Riesling is named for the year of its vineyard’s planting, 1896, making these vines 127 years old when they were picked.

Stefan and Sammie Steinmetz’s excellent cuvees first landed on our shelves in 2022. As purveyors of one of the largest, deepest, and finest collection of German Rieslings in the United States, it’s pretty hard to impress us. But impress, they did.

Their wines are from incredibly steep terrain along the banks of the Mosel on vines grown without fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides. Their environmentally-friendly mindset is carried into the winery, where the wines are fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and without additives or animal proteins (often found in fining agents). Their commitment to organic viticulture on challenging, steep slopes and minimal intervention winemaking yields wines of extraordinary concentration and breathtaking character.
