In the wine region of Wachau in Austria, Weingut Knoll occupies some of the country’s most celebrated vineyards. As a leading member of the Wachau Nobilis Districtus (an illustrious organization of the top Wachau winemakers), the winery is heralded by critics, somms, and collectors as one of the finest. Quality is the focus to best capture the individual expressions of their famed parcels along the Danube River.

Across fifteen hectares, Riesling and Grüner Veltiner vines are cultivated by third-generation members of the Knoll family: Emmerich III oversees the cellar and August is head of vineyard work. The family’s history growing grapes in the region dates as far back as 1379.

The estate produces over twenty-five cuvees each year to highlight the unique microclimates. Rieslings are planted mostly on granite bedrock, while Grüner plantings tend to be found higher up the banks of the Danube on granite and loess soils.

On the technical side, if you’re less familiar with Austrian wine classification systems, know that “Ried” indicates a single vineyard and comes before the name of the vineyard on the label (ie: Ried Loibenberg). “Federspiel” indicates a wine with between 11.5% and 12.5% alcohol. This style tends to be lighter in body and can be less concentrated. “Smaragd” wines have at least 12.5% alcohol. Though all of these wines are dry, Smaragd wines tend to have a fuller body, richer texture, and more impact. Smaragd is the highest quality level under the Wachau classification.

The wines of Knoll are marked with beautiful textural qualities and layered aromatics. They represent some of Austria’s finest and one of the best values in the world for distinguished whites. Guy Charlemagne

Situated in the most famous village in the Côte des Blancs (Mesnil-sur-Oger) is the grower Champagne house of Guy Charlemagne. This producer is special, turning out artisanal, traditionally structured and refined Champagnes using ancient vines grown in some of the most sought-after terroir in the world.

The Charlemagne family has been making wine in Mesnil-sur-Oger since 1892, five generations bringing new breath to their land, while continuing the tradition of producing world class Champagne. Per Peter Liem, this is a grower to hunt for, especially their top bottling, Mesnillésime, which is “a vintage-dated blanc de blancs from Charlemagne’s oldest vines in Le Mesnil: like all of his wines, it’s brisk and racy, although it has a layered depth of fruit and a prominent chalkiness to counter its high acidity.” This cuvee is made from 100% Chardonnay hand-harvested from sixty-year-old vines grown in the chalky, limestone soil of Mesnil-sur-Oger. Champagne expert and author Richard Juhlin writes that the “Mesnillésime is a wine for every serious collector,” and goes on to note that Guy Charlemagne “is a grower to watch with the greatest respect in the future.”

We’re lucky to have a strong connection with a local importer that simply adores the Champagne estate as much as we do. We have just a smidge left of the 2014 vintage, a charming year just entering its prime drinking window, per Anne Krebiehl MW, of Vinous, whose recent review underscores its food-friendly and delicious nature.

Notes of dried corn husk and salty maize meal on the nose take turns with yellow apple on the nose. The oak is apparent in savoriness rather than vanilla and a certain roundness on the body, beautifully handled. The mousse is still bright and sprightly, highlighting saltiness and fresh apple equally. This has an assertive personality, and comes across as a muscular, toned blanc de blancs, bracing at first, then relaxing into a warm smile. The umami finish can absolutely take on food.”

Mount Veeder is the coldest of Napa’s growing regions, ensuring naturally small yields of thick-skinned, high acid grapes that produce racy and lithe wines. Traditionally farmed, the expressive Barolos of Brovia have wowed insiders for decades. Ever since the 2015 vintage, we’ve been writing about how surprised we are that these wines don’t fly off the shelves. They seem to have it all: perfectionist vineyard management (organic without certification, careful pruning, and hand harvesting), superb and distinctive holdings (see for reference: Villero), unapologetically old-school winemaking (long and slow fermentation and long aging in large barrels and, subsequently, in bottle), and consistently excellent releases (see for reference: their reviews). A long, solid list of reasons why you should take note.

So, given their traditionalist stance and indifference to the whims of modern preferences, what could be bringing the limelight to this small producer? Climate change. Their normal style is lean and coiled, so the extra warmth of recent vintages, beginning in force with 2015, pushed the wines to be a little grander than usual. And collectors have started to notice.

These are all wines that are shaping up to be epics. One day, you’ll look back on and wish you had bought more. There’s no going down from here, in price, points, or popularity. So don’t miss this chance.

While its composition varies slightly each year depending on yields, it always comprises the following sources: (1) From their holdings in Castiglione Falletto, Brovia produces but one single cask of each cru-designated wine per vintage, directing any extra volume into the Barolo “Brovia.” Accounting for 20-30% of the wine’s final blend, this spillover comes from vines exceeding 50 years of age in the crus of Rocche di Castiglione, Villero, and Garblet Sue. (2) 70-80% of the Barolo “Brovia” comes from holdings in Serralunga d’Alba, primarily in the cru of Brea with smaller amounts (beginning in 2020) in Gianetto, an east-facing cru which is a natural extension of Brea and yields a wine of similar character. These vines are 20 to 30 years of age on average, the oldest parcels of Brea being used for the single-cru bottling. The Barolo “Brovia” undergoes spontaneous fermentation in a variety of vessels—cement, open-top wood, and stainless steel—and is raised 24 to 30 months in oak botti between 30 and 100 hectoliters in capacity. Afterward, the wine is assembled in a combination of steel and wood for an additional year, being bottled no sooner than 40 months after harvest. This aging process, which is longer than that of the crus (aged solely in 30- to 40-hectoliter casks and bottled after 30 months), allows for a wine slightly more open-knit upon release by design.”

The 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a darker, broader expression that stands on its own thanks to that special intensity. This expression veers toward dark fruit and black cherry, and there is a lot of iron ore or rusty nail at the back. The wine is almost sanguine in character, but in a manner that enhances all the other beautiful characteristics on hand. The mouthfeel is slightly more open-knit and rich, making this a better pairing partner to hearty meat dishes. Production is 5,000 bottles.”

Back-Vintage Jadot Burgundy at a Budget

Burgundy is the most complicated wine region in the entire world and attempting to understand it is a task that knows no end. The main reason for this complexity is the overwhelming number of vineyard sites with entirely unique expressions. The formation of these plots can trace their history back to the early ecclesiastical land holdings of the Catholic Church, and subsequent discovery and parcelization by monks. As these vineyard sites gained renown and increased in value, wealthy French nobles purchased vast swathes of land on which to form prestigious domaines. This was not to last though, as the French Revolution in the 18th century forced the vineyard land from the hands of the wealthy and into the possession of newer and more modest owners.

What you were left with in Burgundy after this period of rapid change was a multitude of new land owners with relatively little winemaking and viticultural expertise. This situation was compounded by the fact that the Napoleonic Code (which followed the Revolution) mandated that land be divided among all the heirs of a family; effectively further subdividing the vineyards at an exponential rate. An individual heir might come into possession of a single row of vines in a prestigious vineyard and have no personal capacity to develop a wine from it. This problem demanded a solution.

Enter: The Negociant. A winemaking operation whose concept revolved around purchasing the grapes of land owners all around Burgundy and vinifying them into distinct wines fit for the market. This relationship came with deep expertise into the villages and wine styles of the entire region, and substantial means through which to make make wine on a large scale.

Enter: Louis Jadot. If there is one negociant you must know from Burgundy, it is absolutely this estate. They’ve been producing top quality wine from the best sites in Burgundy since their founding in 1859. Over the last few hundred years the Jadot family significantly expanded their influence and demonstrated an unmatched ability to express the nuances of pinot noir, chardonnay, and gamay from diverse crus and vineyard locations. In the 20th Century the Jadot family increasingly realized the potential for scaling their personal land ownership and owning the vine to wine process from end to end. Today they have over 260 hectares of vineyard land and the winemaking operation has never been more sophisticated. The wines are honest expressions of the top Crus and offer significant value in comparison to the prices of hard to find cult producers. They have become collectible in their own right for those that love classic Burgundy delivered with amazing consistency vintage to vintage.

G.D. Vajra is responsible for some of the finest Barolos we offer and also excels with their more entry-level options. The lineup as a whole is simply the best in Piedmont today. At all price points, they craft benchmark wines against which all others are judged.

As we climb the ladder, there are small-production wines from rare grapes (Freisa) and the cellar-defender Langhe Nebbiolos and village-level Barolos. At the top end, we find single-vineyard Barolos including the Ravera, which goes for triple digits from others addresses. The Bricco delle Viole is the highest vineyard in Barolo, named for the violets that blossom across its southern exposure. In its position above the thick fogs, it receives the most sunlight with the earliest sunrise and latest sunset, as well as a wildly dramatic diurnal temperature swing. The wines are lifted with refined tannins and minerality. Coste di Rose is home to a wide range of soil types, including sandstone. Per Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate, this results in unique aromatics and a darker fruit profile than the Bricco delle Viole.

In 2009, G.D. Vajra was entrusted by Luigi and Fiorina Baudana to carry on the legacy of their cherished garagiste operation upon their retirement. The estate’s holdings are less than seven acres, making them one of the smallest wineries in Piedmont. As a result, these unique, old-vine wines are made in highly limited qualities. The wines under G.D. Vajra’s care live up to their heritage. The offerings are perfumed, mineral- and fruit-driven expressions of Nebbiolo with plenty of aging potential.
