Wines of Sicily
The island of Sicily boasts exciting winemaking based on 2,500 year old traditions.  Its warm, Mediterranean climate combined with rich, volcanic soils host a multitude of grape varieties both native and newly imported.  In recent decades, Sicily has cast off its reputation for cheap wine produced from high yielding vines.  Since the 1980s, numerous local producers have made strides in refocusing the region on native varietals and high-quality international varietals that take advantage of the long ripening season and mineral-rich soils.Sicily is known for several varieties grown almost exclusively on the island including Nero d’Avola, Grecanico and Frappato.  For centuries, native Nero d’Avola has been Sicily’s most important and widely planted red grape.  Its name means Black of Avola and is named after a coastal town that was a center of trade in the Middle Ages.

Vinopolpick Weekend – Barbaresco Trio

The Italian wine region of Barbaresco in Piedmont is home to the Cantina del Pino estate.  The original winery and vineyard, the famous Ovello vineyard, was founded over a century ago by Domizio Cavazza, the director of the Royal Enological School in Alba from 1888 – 1913. He planted the Mediterranean pine for which the estate currently is named.  After his death, the vineyard was purchased by the Vacca family, who have owned and farmed it for generations since.Today, the estate is managed by the fourth generation winemaker Renato Vacca, although his parents, aunts, uncles and friends all help with production.  Until 1997, their grapes were entirely sold to the Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative; Renatto’s better known cousin, Aldo Vacca, manages the Produttori del Barbaresco.

Ribera del Duero 
Located in north-central Spain, to the southwest of Rioja, the high plain of Ribera del Duero is Tempranillo country. As a region, Ribera del Duero came to prominence in the 1980s for its deeply colored, boldy fruity and tannic reds from its own more structured Tinta del País or Tinto Fino (local names for Tempranillo). Though, as with Rioja, the DO also allows for the use of other grape varieies in the blending process, most of the Ribera del Duero wines are made solely from the old vine Tempranillo that grows here.Ribera del Duero sits on the elevated northern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, divided by the Duero River, which provides the local vineyards with a much-needed water supply.
