Leaving Beaune and heading toward Dijon, Nuits-Saint-Georges marks the gateway of the Côte-de-Nuits and is an appellation that includes some of the finest and best-known French Burgundy. The overwhelming majority of vines are planted in Pinot Noir, from which prized red Burgundy is made, but there are a few vines planted in Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc from which a small group of domaines, notably Domaine J-F. Mugnier, produce excellent Nuits-Saint-Georges Blanc. The Pinots are very robust. The fruit ranges from cherry to plum, but there is an emphasis on earthy/forest notes. Often reaching their prime in 5 to 10 years, these distinctive wines will age to sweeter fruit and chocolate richness. The wines are often capable of aging longer, with some Premier Cru wines able to keep evolving even for up to 20 years, a key factor in this appellation’s appeal.… Read the rest
