Gevrey-Chambertin

Six miles from Dijon, Gevrey Chambertin is the most northern village in our newsletter series tour of the Cote de Nuits.  In dramatic contrast to neighboring villages such as Chambolle-Musigny, the Gevrey-Chambertin village makes a surprisingly powerful and masculine style of Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is at its most intense in Gevrey-Chambertin. This is a wine for meat-eaters and mushroom lovers, its gamey notes giving it a particular affinity for meats such as steak or lamb and, when aged to its prime, has an unrivaled earthiness.

Gevrey-Chambertin’s long history in winemaking started with the founding of Gevrey’s most treasured vineyards, Clos de Beze and Chambertin. The Clos de Bèze vineyard was cleared and planted back in the seventh century by monks from the Abbey of Bèze, which owned the land for several ensuing centuries.… Read the rest

The wine region of Mosel, officially shortened from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer in August 2007, is home to the prestigious JJ Prum estate.  The Mosel has a long history as a winegrowing region, having been first planted by the Romans during the second century.  The region runs along the Mosel River and its Saar and Ruwer tributaries.

Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is all about energy and sheer power. The Montefico is quite virile, even in this vintage, with a certain austerity in the tannin that will require time in bottle to soften. Dark red fruit, leather, anise and spices are some of the notes that wrap around the insistent, pointed finish. There is plenty of nuance here, but not the early appeal of the year. This is a great showing, but readers will need to be patient.

Heading North from Nuits St Georges, Vosne-Romanee is a small commune in the Cote de Nuits district of Burgundy. Records suggest that Vosne certainly existed as a village in the sixth century though the spelling of ‘Vosne’ was often changed.The Abbey of Saint Vivant, which was founded in the 9th century, actually owned a large part of Vosne, including Flagey-Echezeaux which at that time had not yet been delineated.
The turmoil of the French Revolution would cause the demolition of the abbey, and a great amount of upheaval in the area. A wealthy family known as the Croonembourgs eventually came into possession of the vineyards that would eventually become Romanée-Conti.… Read the rest
