Weekend Vinopolpick– February 8

Chablis
 
Chablis is the northernmost sub-region in Burgundy located about 60 miles northwest of the Cote de Nuits.  The Romans first established vineyards in Chablis, but the Cistercian Monks of the Abbey of Pontigny integrated viticulture into the culture of the rural communities and most likely introduced the Chardonnay grape.  It is the coolest of major Burgundy regions, where sun exposure is critical to ripeness.  It is closer in proximity to the region of Champagne actually, and its high quality wines share a mineral character due in part to the two regions similar soil type and cold climate.  Wines from the AOC are 100% Chardonnay and in general see little to no new oak; however in more recent times, some of the highest quality wines can see more significant amounts, adding further complexity.

Vinopolpick Thursday – February 6th

Gevrey Chambertin, one of the northernmost villages in the Cote de Nuit of Northern Burgundy, is home to two well respected wine makers that share both a last name and a passion for purity of expression from their old vines.  Although the AOC of Gevrey Chambertin was designated in 1939, the region boasts over nine centuries of being world-renowned for its rich, earthy and structured wines.  Bernard Dugat, owner and wine maker of Domaine Dugat-Py and his cousin Claude Dugat, owner of Domaine Claude Dugat, come from a family with an extraordinarily long history of grape growing and wine making in the region.

Georges Duboeuf is controversial in fine wine circles; mostly because of his million cases or so of frivolous Beaujolais Nouveau rushed to world-wide markets annually. Yes, he pretty much invented that genre of wine, and even more certainly has been the key commercial force behind it. But Monsieur Duboeuf also knows the upside of Beaujolais involving the Cru vineyards and discarding the candified winemaking, and his best is absolutely among Beaujolais’ best.  We had the good fortune to taste these wines six months ago, and have been awaiting their arrival here ever since. 2011 in Beaujolais yielded generally softer wines at even some of the Burgundy inspired addresses; we were so impressed that while these wines are certainly big bodied and big fruited, they are have a ‘just right’ black tea- like tannic structure.

Vinopolpick Thursday – Jan 30

Below, we feature two historic French wine estates that are leaders from their quite differing regions.  From Champagne’s Cote des Blanc, we explore the grower-producer estate of Pierre Gimonnet, a champion of their home village of Cuis.  Their style can best be described as fresh and feminine, and is evident thoughout their collection.  From Bandol in Provence, we explore the historic Domaine Tempier estate, family owned for over 100 years.  They are a driving force in promoting both their AOC and its quintessential grape: Mourvèdre.  Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne, France
