Negri, Rousseau and More!

Nino Negri
Located at the foothills of the Alps along the border of Switzerland, the Italian region of Valtellina offers challenging terroir and impressive wines.  Valtellina is sheltered from northern winds by the mountains and receives direct sunlight throughout the day.  It is composed of 25 miles of steeply terraced vineyards along the northern bank of the Adda River.  In all, there are 1,500 miles of walls that support these near-vertical terraces that line an amphitheater 2,400 to 3,000 feet in elevation.  For over 1,000, the region has been planted with Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca.  Today, all Valtellina DOCG wines must contain at least 90% of this varietal.Nino Negri is the top estate from this Lombardian region and was founded in 1897.

Forman Vineyard, based on Howell Mountain, was started by long time and well respected Napa vintner Ric Forman in 1978. After studying at UC Davis in the 1960s, Ric initially starting working in Napa at wineries including Robert Mondavi, Newton Vineyards, and Stony Hill. His first wine under his own label, released in 1983, exceeded anyone’s expectations, and Ric has maintained consistent high rankings for his age-worthy Cabernet and Chardonnay.

A very hands-on winemaker, Ric, aided by his son Toby, prefers to do even the most mundane winemaking tasks himself.… Read the rest
