Bruno Giacosa’s Wines of Piedmont

Any discussion of Barolo and Barbaresco could begin and end with mention of Bruno Giacosa, undisputedly one of Italy’s most esteemed producers.

Born into the family wine firm, Bruno Giacosa started his career at the tender age of 15 as a grape buyer, sourcing fruit for his father and grandfather, and then for many of Barolo’s large houses. In 1960, he started his own company and, with a profound passion for Piemontese wine handed down for three generations, became famous for crafting some of the most prestigious single-vineyard Barolos and Barbarescos in all of Piedmont.

While Bruno was one of the first in the region to fully understand the importance of site selection – he began bottling his crus separately in 1967 – he didn’t own any property until the early 1980s.… Read the rest

Domaine de Ferrand

The Domaine de Ferrand is at least as old as the reign of Louis XIV, as both a map dating from the Napoleonic era documents its early existence. Just outside the borders of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Le Grès district of Orange, the winery was officially founded in 1960 by Charles Bravay and has remained a family-run winery ever since. While the domaine formerly sold exclusively to traders, Philippe Bravay launched bottling directly at the winery when he took over the domaine from his father in 1995, the first bottling under Domaine de Ferrand taking place in 1997. Extremely dedicated to preserving the unique traditions that Châteauneuf du Pâpe, Phillippe is dedicated to classic winemaking methods; yields from his small 51/2ha estate are extremely limited, traditional vinification practices such as open-top fermenters are used, and aging is, for the most part, done in large oak foudre with absolutely no use of new oak.

Though now famous for its role in the wine-centric movie “Sideways”, Sanford Winery was famous for its Santa Barbara Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays long before filming began. In Santa Barbara wine country, it all started with Sanford Winery. It was 1971 when wine pioneer Richard Sanford discovered an overlooked, grape-growing treasure in the Santa Rita Hills. The Santa Rita Hills AVA is 100 square miles of heaven for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, owing its magic to an unusual east-west mountain valley that runs from the vineyards to the Pacific Ocean; ideal for cool-climate varietals.  Recognizing an ideal combination of climate and soil conditions much like those in Burgundy, Richard was one of the first to begin planting Pinot Noir grapes in Santa Barbara, a grape the area is now famous for.
