A. Margaine Special Club Brut 2008 ($79.95) $69 special  9 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92 points
“(aged for four years on its lees and disgorged in July of 2013): Green-tinged yellow. Sexy aromas of candied lemon and orange, white flowers and ginger. Wine Spectator 93 points
“Backed by intense and mouthwatering acidity, this firm version offers tightly knit flavors of lemon meringue, poached pear, pastry, with hints of hazelnut and coconut. Shows fine texture, and a smoky, mineral-driven base. Drink now through 2020”

Alfred Gratien Millesime 1997 ($199.95) $149 special 7 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points
“Gratien’s 1997 Brut Millesime impresses for its direct, frank personality and huge fruit. An infant today, the 1997 is surprising for its youth. The aromas and flavors remain quite primary in this rich, vibrant Champagne. Frankly, I am amazed the 1997 is so backward. I would never have expected it. Readers should drink the 1999 and 1998 before looking to the 1997 for pleasure. I can’t wait to see how the 1997 develops. Today it is flat-out striking. The 1997 is 66% Chardonnay, 24% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. ”

Alfred Gratien Millesime 1998 ($199.95) $159 special 7 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points
“A relatively rich, broad shouldered wine, the 1998 Brut Millesime is showing beautifully. Here the aromas and flavors have begun to develop the early hints of tertiary complexity, making the 1998 a great choice for drinking today. Suggestions of white truffles, apricot jam, hazelnuts, hard candy and dried flowers wrap around the gorgeous, striking finish. The 1998 is 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.”

Benoit Lahaye Jardin Grosse Pierre NV [2009] ($149.95) $119 special 8 bottles available
Importer notes
“100% Bouzy Grand Cru. Field blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Arbanne, Chasselas, Petit Meslier , Gros Plant, Teinturier and other varieties. This cuvée is named after the single parcel of the same name. The oldest vines were planted in 1923 by Benoit’s great grandfather, at a time when vineyards were inexpensive. The vines in Champagne usually average 30 year old and it is a rarity to have vines that are as old as 90 years. In 1952, Benoit’s grandfather replaced some dead vines by other varieties, some unknown or now forgotten. Combined with the age of the vines, this diversity gives the wine a great complexity and rare aromas. Until 2009, the wine made from this parcel was blended with wine from other parcels. After tasting it separately, Benoit recognized its unique character and decided to make a special cuvée from it. The 2009 vintage was aged for 10 months in 225l old barrels, bottled in July 2010 without filtration, then kept an extra 28 months in bottles before release. No Dosage. 140 cases made.”

Bereche Blanc De Blancs Cote NV ($89.95) $79 special 2 bottles available

“100% Chardonnay from Montagne de Reims and Vallee de la Marne; 40+ year old vines.  The wine is based on the Les Beaux Regards parcel, which has been in the family for 3 generations.”

Bereche Brut Reserve NV ($49.95) $39 special 12+ bottles available
Wine Spectator 92 points
“Firm and sleek, with crisp acidity structuring flavors of Gala apple, raisin bread, quince paste and almond cream. Well-knit, with a fine bead and fresh finish.”

Bereche Reflet D’Antan Brut NV [2008] ($119.95) $99 special 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The NV (2008) Reflet d’Antan is incredibly delicious. At once rich yet weightless, it embodies a sense of pure aesthetic beauty that is hard to do justice to with mere words. Rich, burnished overtones develop in the glass, giving the wine additional volume, yet the Reflet d’Antan remains gracious and impeccably polished. Hints of almond, spice and orange peel add elements of exoticism. Bérèche’s Reflet d’Antan remains one of the most unique and compelling wines in Champagne. Reflet d’Antan is a perpetual solera, based on the 2008 vintage in this release. This bottle was disgorged in October 2012. Dosage was 6 grams per liter.”

Bereche Vallee Marne Rive Gauche Extra Brut NV [2010] ($99.95) $89 special 3 bottles available
Peter Liem
: “… It’s an outstanding non-vintage champagne, demonstrating all of the class and character of its base vintage, and compared to earlier disgorgements, it shows the same cut and intensity, adding even more nuance and length on the finish. It remains exceptionally primary and pure in flavor, its richly-textured depth pinned firmly in place by racy acidity, and while it’s delicious now, it will only get better with time in the cellar…”

Boizel Joyau De France Brut 1996 ($119.95) $99 special 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points
“60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay Roasted hazelnuts and biscuity aromas, quite a bit of earthy character, chalk, wet pebbles, a little bit of wild strawberries. Crisp, fine bubs, great intensity. Long minerally finish.”

Wine Spectator 93 points
“This is firm and tightly knit, with a backbone of steely acidity, showing a fine, creamy texture that imparts an overall sense of finesse to the layers of poached apple, mille-feuille, black currant, kumquat and honey, showing hints of ground spice and smoky mineral. Drink now through 2020.”

Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut 2002 ($399.95) $333 special 9 bottles available
Vinopolnotes
“The R.D. stands for “recently disgorged” and it was Madame Bollinger’s answer to the call for a new prestige cuvee in the 1960s. “Bollinger’s chef de cave, Gilles Descotes, told Decanter.com it was ‘quite an easy decision’ to make an RD from the 2002 vintage, which he described as a great year.” From the winery: “Aromas of stewed ripe fruit, particularly quince, but also a discreet note of honey. These are followed by roasted notes and cocoa, which give way to flavours of star anise and nutmeg. Full-bodied attack. Powerful but well-balanced, with persistent flavour. Mineral finish with touches of lemon revealinng a pleasing bitterness.”

Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Heurtebise Blanc de Blancs NV 2008 ($79.95) $69 special 4 bottles available
Terry Thiese-
-“The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Heurtebise is one of the more virile, imposing wines in this lineup. Smoke, pastry, spices, honey and candied fruit are some of the many notes that flow from the glass. The Heurtebise has plenty of power, but less in the way of finesse. Still, it is an intriguing Chardonnay loaded with personality and character.”

De Sousa Cuvee Des Caudalies NV ($79.95) $49 special   3 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 94 points
“A blend of 13 vintages, beautifully ripe and round, even with some maturity. Fresh citric fruit cuts through the richness and flavors of pineapple. There is a tang in the texture, an almost chewy structure. Age this wine for a year or two.”

De Sousa Cuvee Des Caudalies 2006 ($219.95) $119 special 8 bottles available

Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Light, bright straw.  Lemon zest, green apple and chalky minerals on the fragrant nose.  Dry and precise, offering energetic citrus and orchard fruit flavors that pick up anise and honeysuckle nuances with air.  Closes stony and long, with lingering floral and iodine notes.”

Deutz Brut Rose 2008 ($74.95) $57 special 4 bottles available
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media 93 points
“”Readers who want to understand why 2008 is such a fabulous vintage for Champagne should check out Deutz’s 2008 Brut Rosé. A tense, brilliant wine, the 2008 impresses for its energy, cut and pure crystalline focus. Even with all the mineral-infused cut, the 2008 is gorgeous and accessible today. Sweet floral notes add lift on the finish, but ultimately, the 2008 Rosé is really a wine of texture.”

Deutz Cuvee William Deutz 2000 ($145.95) $115 special 10 bottles available

Deutz Cuvee William Rose 2000 ($269.95) $219 special 5 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 93 points
“Bright pink. Pungent, expansive aromas of dried red berries and cherry, with a brighter suggestion of blood orange and a hint of anise. Deeply pitched citrus and red berry flavors are complicated by notes of candied rose and white pepper and gain spiciness with air. Finishes on a refreshingly bitter citrus pith note, with excellent persistence. Seems fully mature but there’s no rush to drink this.”

Dom Perignon 2004 ($179.95) $149 special 6 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2004 Dom Pérignon continues to develop beautifully. A vibrant, focused Champagne, the 2004 clearly reflects the personality of the year. Freshly cut flowers, white peaches and pears are woven together in a Champagne that impresses for its focus and energy. Chiseled saline note support the crystalline finish. I imagine the 2004 will always remain relatively bright and linear, but at the same time, each time I have tasted it over the last two years the 2004 seems to have a little more body and broader shoulders. The 2004 will appeal most to readers who find the 2002 and 2003 too exuberant. There is a lot to like in the glass.”

Dom Perignon Rose Brut 2003 ($349.95) $259 special 5 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 points
“The whole is greater than the sum of the parts in this harmonious version. A delicate bead caresses the mouth, while flavors of currant pâte de fruit, dried apricot, pastry and pickled ginger expand on the palate. Subtly floral, with a fine frame of acidity driving this to the mouthwatering finish of smoky mineral and dried fruit. Drink now through 2030.”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2003 Dom Pérignon Rosé is another wine that has come together quite nicely over the last few months. Given the exuberance and sheer vinosity of the 2000 and the 2002, along with the ripeness of the year, and the heft of the 2003 Blanc, I expected the 2003 Rosé to be a much bigger wine. Instead, it is surprisingly delicate and medium in body. Dried flowers, crushed raspberries and sweet herbs waft from the glass in a Rosé that is all about sensuality. With time in the glass, the richness of the fruit becomes more pronounced, while the tannin from the red grapes is also noticeable.”

Dom Perignon Rose Jeff Koons 2003 ($349.95) $299 special 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni 93 points

Fleury Champagne Brut Cepages Blanc 2004 ($79.95) $69 special 12+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points
“Another gorgeous wine, the 2004 Brut Cepages Blancs (Chardonnay) is stunningly beautiful. Rich, deep and layered, the 2004 comes alive in the glass. Lemon, dried flowers and hazelnuts wrap around the palate as this complex, utterly beguiling wine shows off its considerable personality and pedigree. Chalky notes frame the finish. This is without question one of the very best wines I have ever tasted from Fleury.”

Spreads out nicely on the palate, offering lively citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a touch of bitter quinine. Closes smooth and long, with echoing minerality and a touch of bitter pear skin. There’s very good depth here, as well as verve.”

Henri Goutorbe Brut Rose NV ($59.95) $49 special 12+ bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92 points
“(all Ay fruit and all from 2009; aged on its lees for two years and disgorged in January, 2013):  Pale orange. Sexy, smoke-tinged aromas of raspberry, orange zest and potpourri.  Silky in texture and impressively pure, offering sappy red berry and brioche flavors and suave floral pastille and spicecake accents. Antonio Galloni 95 points
“I had been dying to drink – not taste – Jacquesson’s Brut Cuvee 736, follwing my visit to the domaine a few months ago. The bottle was every bit as great as I remembered. Built on a base of 2008, the 736 was brilliant, focused and chiseled from the very first taste. What a wine!”

Jacquesson Brut Dizy Corne Bautray 2004 ($279.95) $219 special 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95 points
“The 2004 Brut Dizy Corne Bautray is remarkable for many reasons. One of those is just how vivid the flavors are. An utterly seamless wine, the 2004 Corne Bautray impresses for its exceptional overall balance. Almonds, lemon oil, chalk, sage and light pastry notes develop as this utterly beguiling Champagne shows off its superb pedigree. The 2004 was bottled with no dosage, but that isn’t even evident in the least. A wine of notable vibrancy and energy, the 2004 is a wine built on focus and persistence.”

Moet Chandon Grand Vintage Brut 2004 ($79.95) $59 special 8 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“Pear, spices, yellow stone fruits and smoke meld together in the Brut Grand Vintage. Rich and ample on the palate, the 2004 impresses for its balance, richness and volume. This bottle is quite a bit fresher and more vibrant than the bottle I reviewed last year. Early signs of development are just now starting to appear, but the flavors remain on the bright side for a ten year-old Champagne. If anything, the 2004 needs a bit more time to fully come together. Overall. this is a terrific showing. The blend is 38% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 29% Pinot Meunier”

Moet Chandon Grand Vintage Brut 2006 ($69.95) $49 special 12+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“Moët’s 2006 Brut Grand Vintage is beautiful, finessed and expressive. Smoke, slate, apricot and pastry notes emerge as the wine gradually unfolds. Rich and textured on the palate, yet beautifully supported by veins of minerality, the 2006 is simply impeccable from the very first taste. The richer, honeyed notes typical of Chardonnay in this vintage are particularly evident today while the Meunier, which has higher acidity, keeps things bright, although it plays a lesser part in the overall blend than in years past. The 2006 is 42% Chardonnay, 39% Pinot Noir and 19% Pinot Meunier. Dosage is 5 grams/liter.”

Moet Chandon Grand Vintage Brut Rose 2004 ($89.95) $59 special 12+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“Much more typical of the year, 2004 Brut Grand Vintage Rosé is pure chalk, rhubarb, pomegranate and rose petals. The flavors possess striking delineation and nuance in a style that is all about tension. I very much like the sense of energy here. Stylistically, the Rosé is quite a bit more focused than the Blanc in 2004, with fewer oxidative overtones and plenty of drive. This is a hugely appealing Champagne from Moët Chandon. 2014 – 2024.”

“Bright yellow-gold.  Sexy, pungent aromas of dried orchard fruits, melon, raspberry and potpourri, with a spicy quality that gains strength with air.  Lush, sappy and penetrating, with very good depth to its spice-accented pear and red berry flavors.  Shows a touch of orange marmalade on the finish, which lingers with impressive tenacity and length.  This complex Champagne has the vivacity to work with lighter foods but the heft to handle richly sauced dishes as well.”

Pierre Peters Cuvee Reserve Blanc De Blancs NV 375($37.95) $27 special  8 half bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points
“The NV Brut Cuvee de Reserve is striking. It shows fabulous cut and definition in its fruit, expressive aromatics all backed up by plenty of underlying structure. A bright, mineral laced finish rounds things out in style. This is superb entry-level wine from one of Champagne’s top producers. The Cuvee Reserve is 100% Chardonnay. This year’s release is based on 2008 (60%), with reserve wines going back to 1988, precisely 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1995-2007 (except 1999 and 2003). ”

Each bottle comes packed in its own individual gift carton and has a special label, featuring holograms of ‘bouncing footballs’ in place of the standard ‘bubble’ design.”

Vilmart Coeur De Cuvee Brut 2005 ($179.95) $119 special 12+ bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 93 points
“(made from a blend of 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir; aged on its less for 78 months and disgorged in December 2012):  Bright yellow.  Sexy, smoke-tinged aromas of ripe citrus fruits, poached pear and candied ginger.  Spicy, penetrating and pure, offering intense Meyer lemon and bitter pear skin flavors plus hints of honeysuckle and chamomile.  Shows impressive urgency and focus on the finish, with the floral note echoing.” ST
Wine Advocate 93 points “Named for its being derived solely from the heart of the pressing, Vilmart’s 2005 Brut Coeur de Cuvee – aged in small barrels one-third each new, once- and twice-previously used and only disgorged after 7 years – opens with an expressive bouquet of iris, gentian, and hyacinth, behind which come intimations of the noble mushrooms, oyster liquor, and nut oils that go on to inform an at once satiny and vivacious palate. White pepper and crystalline mineral impingements in the mouthwateringly mineral and umami-rich finish testify to a transparency, clarity and buoyancy seldom found in the often problematically earthy and diffuse Champagnes of this vintage. Feel free to follow this for several more years.”

Vincent Couche Blanc De Blancs Nacre X-Brut ($59.95) $49 special 9 bottles available
Vinopolnotes
“100% Chardonnay from the Biodynamically-farmed estate parcel in Montgeux, just outside of Troyes. Based on the 2004, 2003 & 2002 harvests – this beauty spent 9 years on the lees prior to disgorgement on January 5, 2012 with 6 grams dosage. Limestone, minerals, and brioche dominate the nose, with precise flavors and a fresh, creamy texture on the palate. “Perle de Nacre” is French for “mother of pearl.””

“100% Chardonnay from a small plot of young vines in Biaunes. Slow ripening vines on chalky, Kimmeridgian soil gives this wine strong and focused minerality.”

Cedric Bouchard

Cedric Bouchard developed a passion for natural winemaking after tasting the results from small Champagne producers.  He took over a small area of vineyard land from his father and quickly developed a reputation for producing revolutionary wine.  He prefers producing single vineyard-, single variety-, single vintage-wines, each from the first pressing of hand-harvested grapes.  The wines undergo long, slow fermentations with indigenous yeasts to develop finer mousse and enhanced vinosity.

Jean Milan

Caroline Milan and her brother Jean-Charles are the fourth generation owners of this estate in the Grand cru commune of Oger within the Cote des Blancs.  Vineyards are in a warm bowl between the hills of Mesnil and Cramant.  Their six hectares of 40+ year old Chardonnay vines are planted in Belimnite chalk soil, imparting elegance and finesse to these wines that are known for their longevity.

Jean Milan Brut Blanc de Blancs Grande Reserve 1864 NV ($99.95) $79 special 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points
“The NV Brut Grand Reserve 1864 is another hauntingly beautiful wine great with exquisite inner perfume and lovely softness in its fruit. Aging in oak gives the wine a little more inner sweetness and spiciness, but the oak is very well balanced. Mirabelle plums, kirsch and jasmine are some of the nuances that linger on the haunting finish. The current release is a blend of vintages 2000 and 2001. This bottle was disgorged on July 12, 2011. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018.”

Stephen Tanzer 93 points
“Light gold. Ripe tangerine and melon on the nose, with exotic floral and spicecake notes expanding with air. Spicy and energetic, displaying dense orchard fruit, Meyer lemon and honeydew flavors and sneaky power. The broad, sappy finish shows excellent tenacity and leaves sweet citrus fruit and poached pear notes in its wake”

Jean Milan Terres Noel VV Brut Blanc de Blancs 2009 ($99.95) $75 special 12 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 93 points
“(made from a single plot of 72-year-old vines and aged for around 40 months on its lees; disgorged June, 2013):  Light yellow-gold.  Highly perfumed lemon, orange and toasted nut scents are complicated by a suave floral quality.  Smoky and dry, offering intense lemon pith, orange and buttered toast flavors and a hint of hazelnut.  Becomes creamier with air and finishes with excellent clarity and smoky persistence.”

Phillipponnat

One of the last remaining Champagne houses to be run by a member of the founding family, Phillipponnat is house that holds on strongly to its roots. Charles Philipponnat was meant for a life in Chmapgne, descended from winemakers, cellarmasters and growers dating back nearly 600 years. Under Charles, Philipponnat’s wines aren’t just more intense, they’re also fresher. To maximize their character, the non-vintage wines age for 3 years en tirage, while the vintage cuvées spend from 5 to 10 years on the lees. Through great technical skill and a long history to live up to, Charles has created a range of Champagnes with few peers for quality and character, the Clos des Goisses called by Peter Liem “arguably the greatest vineyard site in all of Champagne.” From its first vintage in 1935, Clos des Goisses has been a cherished vineyard in Champagne, and one of the first single vineyard Champagnes bottled, rather than a blend of vineyards has had been done for centuries in the region. Charles’ Champagnes use this prized vineyard to its full extent, and the resulting wines are a one of a kind experience.

Philipponnat Clos Des Goisses Brut 2001 ($249.95) $149 special   10 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93+ points
“The 2001 Brut Clos des Goisses has begun to take on attractive early tertiary nuances. A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2001 has gorgeous depth but not quite the finesse of the very best years. Even with all of the intense fruit and rich, palate-staining finish, some slightly rough edges remain. Dried apricots, spices, licorice, sweet herbs and tobacco add elements of exoticism on the finish. A spell of cold weather and rain during the harvest appears to have marked the 2001. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow, although I don’t think it will reach the heights of the 2002. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2041.”

Philipponnat Clos Des Goisses Brut 2002 ($279.95) $249 special   3 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 points
“The flagship 2002 Brut Clos des Goisses is simply stunning in this vintage. Seamless, ripe and beguiling, the 2002 is pure harmony in the glass. Dried pears, apricots, flowers, red berries and spices are some of the many notes that inform this towering, aristocratic wine. At once vertical yet endowed with serious length, the 2002 stands out for its breathtaking balance and overall sense of harmony. Layers of fruit built to the huge, creamy finish. This is a great showing from Philipponnat.”

“(65% pinot nor and 35% chardonnay; disgorged May, 2013):  Vivid yellow.  Heady, mineral-driven scents of fresh citrus and orchard fruits, white flowers, anise and iodine, with toasty lees and herbal notes coming up with air.  Densely packed Meyer lemon and bitter pear skin flavors become sweeter with air and show excellent focus.  The smoke and floral qualities come back on the mineral-dominated finish, which lingers with outstanding tenacity.  I’ll bet that this superbly balanced Champagne will reward many years of cellaring.”

Ulysse Collin

“I create nothing. I accompany the forces of nature.”
 -Olivier Collin

Olivier focuses on three different parcels, each with their own individual personalities, but with the same resonating spirit.  Working the soils is the one example where he can ‘biologically see the results’ of his labor. His strong beliefs include maintaining a steady stimulation within the soils microbiological activity. Never using a tractor after harvest supports this, allowing the summer grass to naturally detoxify the soil. The parcels of ‘Les Roises’ and ‘Les Perrières ’ contain a thick layer of chalk lying on the surface mixed with black Silex, a carbonated flint and rare geological combination in Champagne.   ‘Les Maillons’ does not contain any silex, being about a 30 minute drive from the other vineyards, but has a mixture of both chalk and clay, creating his Blanc de Noirs. Minimal intervention in the cellar with naturally long fermentations, Collin’s vinification process is an attempt to reveal in his words, the “true personalities of each parcel in function of its history.”

Floral notes develop later, adding lift and freshness, but this remains a rich, full-bodied wine endowed with stunning power and plenty of unbridled intensity. “The 2002 Extra Brut Millesime is a rich, broad shouldered wine graced with tons of fruit. Vinification in French oak barriques gives the wine considerable depth, volume and spiciness. Layers of ripe, expressive varietal fruit flow from this rich, dramatic Champagne. A caressing, multi-dimensional finish rounds things out in style. As good as this is – and it is outstanding – I prefer Geoffroy’s wines made in steel. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier, with 2 grams per liter of dosage”

“The 2006 Brut Cuvee Grand Cellier d’Or is a striking wine endowed with tons of class and sheer depth. It shows considerable power in its freshly cut flowers, spices and rich Chardonnay fruit. All of the aromas and flavors build effortlessly to a creamy finish layered with smoke, minerals and ash. This is a fabulous wine in every way, but it will require at least a few more years in bottle. The 2006 is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir from Les Blanches Voies Bas. “(made from 90% chardonnay and 10% pinot noir, with 32 g/l dosage; this has the same vintage breakdown as the Traditionelle Brut bottling; disgorged July, 2012):  Light gold.  A pungent bouquet displays scents of honey, poached pear, peach nectar and blonde tobacco.  Sappy and gently sweet citrus and pit fruit flavors are given lift by gentle acidity and pick up marzipan and floral qualities with air.  The pit fruit and floral notes linger on a long, spicy, clinging finish.  This would be a great Champagne to serve alongside strong-smelling or salty cheeses.” ST
Wine Advocate 90 points “The NV Demi-Sec offers lively richness from the additional dosage (31 grams/liter) yet never loses its essential minerality and sheer brilliance. White flowers, spices, pears and citrus notes are layered into the generous, inviting finish. This is another strong showing from Margaine. The Demi-Sec is the same blend as the Cuvee Traditionelle, which is to say 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir, 52% 2008 juice plus reserves spanning 2007 (20%), 2005 (8%), 2004 (12%), and 2000 (8%), the only difference is the dosage.”

Pierre Gimonnet

In 1935, Pierre Gimonnet began bottling his own estate Champagnes in the village of Cuis in the Cote des Blanc.  The family produces a distinctive and fresh house style based on Chardonnay, and four important practices help them achieve this goal: thorough knowledge of their vineyards, controlled yields, high average vine age and the inclusion of Cuis base wine in many of their blends.  The estate’s vines are on average older than most in the region.  Over 70% of the vines are at least 30 years old, 40% are over 40 years old, and in two lieux-dits in Cramant, Le Fond du Bateau and Buisson, the vines are over 100 years old.  Old vines produce wines great complexity.

The brothers use the Chardonnay base wine from Cuis for many of their blends.  Cuis, the coolest village in the Cote des Blancs, provides the blends with a fresh and lively essence of acidity, lightness and finesse.  Thus, Cuis provides the underlying core of freshness, acidity and delicacy that gives the Pierre Gimonnet Champagnes much of their distinctive character.  The base wines are stored between vintages in magnums instead of tanks to preserve their delicacy and fresh aromas.

“80% 2010 wine, 10% 2009, 4% 2008, 5% 2007 and 1% 2002; disgorged in May, 2013 after 30 months on its lees):  Green-tinged yellow.  Intense, mineral-accented aromas of orange zest, pear and white flowers, with an iodiney quality building in the glass.  Chewy in texture and nicely concentrated, offering precise citrus and bitter quinine flavors and a strong topnote of dusty minerals.  Finishes clean, bright and very long, with lingering chalkiness.  This would make a superb match with fresh oysters or crab.”

“Pale gold.  Smoky pear and nectarine aromas are brightened by zesty minerals and deepened by hints of toasty lees and iodine.  Intense orchard fruit and melon flavors stain the palate, picking up citrus pith and floral honey qualities with air.  Turns firmer and more minerally with air, finishing with excellent lift and smoky persistence.”

“The 2005 Brut Vintage Collection, tasted from magnum, is stunning. Intense, layered and drop-dead gorgeous, the 2005 covers every corner of the palate with layers of mineral-infused fruit. Smoke, slate, crushed rocks and flowers appear later, adding gorgeous dimensions of pure nuance. Still young, the 2005 appears to have a bright future. This is one of the best 2005 vintage Champagnes I have tasted. The 2005 is 100% Chardonnay from Cramant, Chouilly and Cuis. This bottle was disgorged in January 2013 after spending 84 months on its lees.”

Lassaigne Champagne

Jacques Lassaigne is a 4.7 hectare family vineyard located in Montgueux. The vineyards boast prime southeastern exposure & consist primarily of Chardonnay vines (94%) & the rest is made up of Pinot Noir (6%). The Montgueux vineyard sites were originally held for the Montrachet of Champagne & are located near the gates of Troyes—the former capital of Champagne. The terroir in Montgueux is nearly identical to the growing sites found further north in le Mesnil, as they share the same limestone vain —this is exceptional terroir for making great champagne. The non-vintage Blanc de Blanc is a blend of nine different vineyard sites & two successive vintages.

Lassaigne Millesime Brut Blanc de Blancs 2006 ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points
“Sourced from Le Cotet, La Grande Cote and Les Paluets–which last-named is southeast-facing and arguably the top site in Montgueux, opines Lassaigne–his 2006 Brut Nature is intriguingly and alluringly scented with fresh lemon and apricot, peony and narcissus, rowan and pistachio, along with sea breeze intimations and a pungency of struck flint. Startlingly silken and creamy, yet focused and vibrantly juicy this adds a sort of shimmering, crystalline sense of stoniness to an almost kaleidoscopically interactive finish. It ought to merit following for 6-8 years. Incidentally, Lassaigne believes that a purer expression of vintage character will always be achieved by maturing this cuvee in tank.”

Arriving in December

Maison Pol Roger is one of the last Great Houses of Champagne to remain family-owned. Pol Roger founded the house after selling his first wine in 1849. His father’s sudden illness thrust him into business at the age of 18. He produced his wine in the Brut style, which was much preferred by consumers in Great Britain, where it quickly established a strong base. His sons, Maurice and Georges, took over the business after his death in 1899. They oversaw the expansion of the brand despite a massive cellar collapse that destroyed several buildings, Prohibition in the US, and the two World Wars. In honor of their father, they changed their last name to Pol-Roger.

Today, the winery sources almost 50% of its fruit from 200 acres of estate vineyards. The rest is from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards rated 95 points or higher on the Echelle des Crus system, making their sourced grapes some of the highest quality available to the Grand Marques. Each lot is vinified and aged separately before the final blending takes place. The Vintage wines are made from at least 60% Pinot Noir. The Brut NV is a blend of all three major Champagne grape varietals. The base wines are at least 3 years old.
