Introducing Quinta da Muradella:

Obscure Yet Highly Rated Spanish Wines

Tucked within remote mountains in the Spanish region of Galicia is the emerging appellation of Monterrei. If there is one name to know, it is José Luis Mateo. Mateo founded his winery, Quinta da Muradella, in 1990, working with ancient vines and obscure varieties from his father’s parcel and neighbors. By 1999, he had purchased his own vineyard, from which he now crafts the “Muradella,” a single-vineyard eponymous wine.

Inspired by Raúl Pérez, Mateo works organically with the goal of achieving balance in the wines to best express the rugged terroirs. You’ll not find new oak or high ABVs here; these are fresh wines with energy and uniqueness. He’s constantly experimenting with the indigenous and otherwise grape varieties found in this region, which borders Portugal and boasts hot summers and icy winters.

The region boasts a wide variety of soil types, from granite, sand, schist, limestone, and iron-rich clay. The diversity of these terroirs is reflected in the regional “Candea” bottlings and the single-village “Alanda” wines. Grapes for the red (a blend of Mencia, Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera) and white (a blend of Treixadura; Doña Blanco; Blanco Lexitimo, Verdello) Candea bottlings are sourced from an old friend. These are the entry-level wines of the estate, which are excellent for the money. Both are on the lighter side, with expressive fruit and herb notes.

Moving up, the village Alanda white is a similar blend to the Candea. The soils are sandy slate with clay and some small pockets of granite and limestone. The wine is made progressively, as each variety is harvested, the grapes are added to the stainless-steel fermentation vats before aging in steel and old oak foudres. The red is crafted from Mencia, Arauxa (Tempranillo), Garnacha Tintorera and Mouraton, and is fermented whole cluster before aging for fifteen months in a mix of concrete, steel, and oak foudres.

At the top of the line, we have the single-vineyard red and white from the estate Muradella vineyard. The vines are heirloom cuttings from the region, massale selections, planted in 1999. The soil is iron-rich clay over granite and slate. The white is aged on the fine lees for at least fifteen months, sans malo, before aging for an additional year in steel. The red is a blend of Mencia, Zamarrica, Bastardo, Caino Redondo and Brancellao, all destemmed and cofermented in concrete over several months. The resulting wine is aged in old oak foudres and barrels.

We’re proud to share these unique wines with you, as one of the few shops in the country to carry the lineup of current releases. Though we stocked up, especially after reading Luis Gutiérrez of the Wine Advocate’s insight, these are highly limited, so act now!

“José Luis Mateo is the name behind Quinta da Muradella, the quality leader of Monterrei in Galicia. He’s constantly trying to find ways to improve, studying his soils, even reducing the surface of vineyards he works (some 15 hectares, all owned by him, all worked organically and certified organic since 2005, despite the fact that the wines do not carry certifications) and restructuring his range to achieve more reflection of the terroir in his wines. They are amazingly fresh and focused, especially the whites, quite a challenge in a warm region. The future of his range will be regional wines (Alanda), single-vineyard ones (Gorvia, Quinta da Muradella and El Pliegue) and varietal, experimental and one-off wines. His production averages 35,000 bottles per vintage. Highly recommended.” –Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

We offer six wines from Quinta da Muradella, including:

Quinta da Muradella Candea Blanco, Monterrei 2022 750ml $21.90 special, 24 bottles in stock
No review for the 2022. Recent review provided for reference.
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 92 points “Even the entry-level white 2020 Candea Blanco, a regional blend of equal parts of Dona Blanca, Verdello and Treixadura fermented and kept with lees in stainless steel for one year, shows character, cleanliness, precision and freshness beyond the price point, and it transcends appellation and vintage and is offered with some time in bottle. It has only 12.5% alcohol and an expressive nose of herbs and flowers, and it is balanced, harmonious and elegant and finishes dry and long with a tasty and salty twist. A bargain.”

Quinta da Muradella Candea Tinto, Monterrei 2020 750ml $21.90 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 92 points
“I love the simplicity of the red blend 2020 Candea Tinto, which is straightforward, tasty, juicy and balanced, without any excess or makeup, raw and authentic, with note of wild berries, flowers and herbs and a medium-bodied palate with moderate alcohol and nice balance. Highly drinkable. 14,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2022.”

Quinta da Muradella Alanda Blanco, Monterrei 2021 750ml $49 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2021 Alanda Blanco is a village wine from Monterrei, a blend of Dona Blanca, Treixadura and Verdello that reflects the diversity of soils, altitudes and expositions. The varieties fermented together, being added to the vat progressively, and 1,500-liters matured in a used French oak foudre for 15 months and the rest was kept in stainless steel. It’s pale, young and austere, more about soil and rocks than fruit, with notions of wet granite and dry flowers. It has contained ripeness, 13% alcohol, very good acidity, freshness and balance, with a sense of purity and transparency that is common to all whites here. It has depth, energy and light and extra vibrancy this year. It could very well be the finest white Alanda to date. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.”

Quinta da Muradella Alanda Tinto, Monterrei 2018 750ml $44.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The characterful 2018 Alanda Tinto was produced with a blend of Mencía, Bastardo and Garnacha Tintorera from their vineyards with different soils (slate, sand and clay) in different parts within Monterrei. It fermented together with one-third full clusters in stainless steel and concrete and matured in barrique, stainless steel and concrete vats for 15 months; then it was blended and put back in stainless steel for one more year. It has very good freshness, purity of aroma and flavors and a medium-bodied palate, with moderate alcohol and very fine tannins. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2022.”

Quinta da Muradella ‘Muradella’ Blanco, Monterrei 2019 750ml $89 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 96+ points
“Next to the very young 2021, I also had the chance to taste the 2019 Quinta da Muradella Blanco, which has developed further complexity with time in bottle and now feels very flinty and mineral. The color is incredibly pale and bright; it looks like a young wine from 2023, almost transparent, but the nose has amazing complexity and the palate is pungent and full of energy and light. It’s vibrant, has moderate alcohol and notable freshness and acidity that make you salivate. This is developing even better than anticipated. I wonder if I’m still underestimating some of these amazing whites… 2,500 numbered bottles produced.”

Quinta da Muradella ‘Muradella’ Tinto, Monterrei 2018 750ml $79 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“I love the elegant, complex and subtle nose of the 2018 Quinta da Muradella Tinto, produced with 23-year-old vines planted on three different soils: sand, slate and clay with lots of iron. It has a sense of purity and balance that is touching. There is a sense of innocence and simplicity that is difficult to achieve. It’s subtle and balanced, with very fine tannins and a beautiful mouthfeel. It’s a co-fermentation of Mencía, Zamarrica, Bastardo, Caíño Redondo and Albarello fermented destemmed in concrete with a soft extraction and a long maceration. The wine decanted in stainless steel for six months and then matured in foudre and one 500-liter barrel. 3,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2021.”

Ovum Winery’s Champagne-Style Riesling

Creators of the wildly popular “Big Salt” white, Ksenija and John House make gorgeous and unexpected, low-intervention wines. Primarily working with Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat and Pinot Blanc they are fantastic at demonstrating the versatility of the component grapes, further demonstrated by their multifaceted vinification practices. They produce wines evocative of what Alsace, Central Europe, and Northern Italy created prior to 19th century industrialization.

On tap, we offer their blanc de blancs sparkler, a Champagne-method Riesling sparkler loaded with as much personality as we’ve come to expect from this dynamic duo. We have just over a case remaining of this dry, crisp bubbly on sale now ‘til it’s gone.

In Stock & On Sale Now:

Ovum Rare Form ‘Day Moon’ Sparkling, Meyer Vineyard, Dundee Hills NV 750ml Was $59, Now $49 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Wine & Spirits 94 points “From a vineyard in the Dundee Hills, this is organically grown riesling fermented in amphorae and aged in old barrels for a year, then two years in bottle. It’s a thought-provoking wine, subtle in a variety of ways—subtle lees notes, subtle oxidative notes, the flavors hinting at lemon, apple, Georgian savor. this stayed fresh for five days despite the intentional low pressure of its bubbles. It’s a wine to ponder with a grand plateau.”
Winery note “Day Moon is inspired by aged Blanc de Blanc Champagne. Striking straw gold color with a modest, fine mousse. An inviting nose of fresh brioche with a small pad of salted butter and lemon confit. Dried wildflower, straw and ginger follow. Pure energy races as the palate unfolds elegant layers of dried flowers and minerals. The restrained mousse is in harmony with the noticeably long, nutty finish. Native fermentation is completed in amphora, where it is then racked to age in neutral French oak for 1-2 years. Ksenija uses Riesling juice to build a yeast population that she will use to tirage the base wine at a specific atmosphere of pressure designed to match the vinosity of the wine (Day Moon: 3 bar). Minimum 18 months of bottle age on less, additional 6 months age post disgorgement. Brut Nature – 2gL dosage made from aged Riesling. *No added sulfites.”

Generations of Excellence:

The Wines of Domaine Hubert Lignier.

“We aspire to make authentic and sensual wines that express their own terroir.” -Laurent Lignier

What is it that sets apart the wines of Domaine Lignier?

In the 1880s, when the Phylloxera blight was destroying vineyards across France, Jacques Lignier, a viticulturist from Morey-St-Denis, saw opportunity. He purchased a neglected, run-down estate – a bargain thanks to the blight—and with his sons by his side, Jacques started the long process of restoring these desiccated vines to life.

With Generations of hard work, they expanded, acquiring prized plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, and Nuit St Georges. Finally, under the leadership of Hubert Lignier, the Domaine blossomed. Hubert started estate bottling, and the wines we know and love today were born.

Now, with the torch passed to Hubert’s son, Laurent, the winemaking and viticulture represent generations worth of accumulated wisdom and practice guided by “Lutte Raisonee” — “sensible combat” in French. This means minimal intervention: nourishing the vines with organic compost. Tilling replaces herbicides, and green harvest pruning ensures only the best grapes make it into the final blend. In addition, they use a cold soak maceration technique, resulting in wines with incredible concentration and structure.

These are wines crafted with patience and a deep respect for the land – a testament to the enduring legacy of the Lignier family.

We are truly excited to share them with you!

Arriving May 10th:

Domaine Hubert Lignier Bourgogne Aligote ‘Aux Poirelots’, France 2022 750ml $49 special, 5 bottles available
Winery Notes “Vines covering 40 acres planted in 1943-1944! This crisp, dry white wine can be enjoyed as an aperitif, on its own or in a Kir with Burgundy Crème de Cassis, and can also pair well with seafood or charcuterie.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Bourgogne Pinot Noir Grand Chaliot, Burgundy, France 2022 750ml $59 special, 6 bottles available
Rosenthal Wine Merchant’s Notes “The Grand Chaliot vineyard is situated just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and the Ligniers work 1.25 hectares of 30-year-old vines there. Given its proximity to Nuits-Saint-Georges, this wine possesses a seriousness and complexity uncommon in a Bourgogne Rouge. As with the Passetoutgrain, this is raised in used barrels and bottled just prior to the following harvest.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussieres, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $189 special, 4 bottles available
Charles Curtis MW- Decanter 93 Points “The blended premier cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’ at Hubert Lignier is always the last wine tasted before the grand crus. The grapes come from eighty-year-old vines in the lieu-dit Les Faconnières that run down into the next lieu-dit downslope called Les Chenevery. Both are below Clos de la Roche; Laurent Lignier calls the wine his ‘little Clos de la Roche’. The wine shows ripe plummy fruit with a firm underpinning of earth, mineral, smoke and cigar leaf. The texture is tannic and dense, and the length is impressive.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $599 special, 2 bottles available
Winery Notes “Soil deeper than in Clos de la Roche and composed of clay-limestone and sand. The vineyards are located next to Les Combottes, to the south of Charmes Chambertin. The wines are characterized by floral scents, they are often elegant and delicate yet also possess the power and length on the palate worthy of a rather charming Grand Cru.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin Regnard, Cotes de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $119 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Notes Vines are facing South, leading to beautiful ripeness. The result is a pleasant, deliciously fruity wine. Generous when young, they also have good cellar-ageing potential.

Domaine Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $135 special, 3 bottles available
Rosenthal Wine Merchant’s Notes “Les Seuvrées sits just below the grand cru Mazoyeres-Chambertin on the slope, bordering the northern edge of Morey-Saint-Denis. The Ligniers own a hectare of very old vines here, planted between 1938 and 1966, and this cuvée displays a darker, more rugged side of the appellation, with meaty depth and intense concentration. Laurent employs approximately 20% new barrels for the élevage here.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier La Riotte, Morey St Denis Premier Cru, France 2021 750ml $219 special, 3 bottles available
Charles Curtis MW-Decanter 92 Points “Yields in the premier cru La Riotte were particularly low – just 25% of a normal harvest. This is doubly unfortunate since this was among the best of the premier crus in the cellar in 2021. The ripe, supple blackberry and plum fruit aromas were open and accessible, with notes of violets and earth. This early-ripening site was among those most severely damaged by frost in 2021. However, the concentrated wine it produced will doubtless stand the test of time.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Vieilles Vignes, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $289 special, 2 bottles available
Charles Curtis MW-Decanter 93 Points “The blended premier cru ‘Vieilles Vignes’ at Hubert Lignier is always the last wine tasted before the grand crus.

Domaine Hubert Lignier Les Chaffots, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, France 2021 750ml $219 special, 2 bottles available
Winery Notes “Located just above the Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, at 330 metres altitude, on a hillside with a east-southeast incline. The vineyards receive an exceptional amount of sunlight as well as freshness due to the altitude and the nearby valley. The wine is among the strongest-coloured of the domaine’s wines and nicely balanced with a pure, taut character and mature tannins. Excellent cellar-ageing potential.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis Tres Girard, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $119 special, 3 bottles available
Decanter 93 Points “The fruit character here is ripe, if somewhat rustic, with more black fruit than red. The palate has plenty of tannic grip and satisfying length at this level. It should drink well on release, but it will improve with short- to mid-term cellaring. The wine is made from purchased grapes from this site at the base of the village, mostly destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in cask.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $135 special, 2 bottles available
Rosenthal Wine Merchant’s Notes “Lignier’s “Trilogie” is produced from small holdings of very old plantings in three different Morey-Saint-Denis lieux-dits: Chenevery, Clos Solon, and Porroux, with vines planted between 1936 and 1972. There is good intensity of structure to this wine, with a deep mineral thrust and a wild spice element, yet it preserves a sense of lift and drive.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Bourgogne Passetoutgrain ‘Aux Poirelots’, Burgundy, France 2022 750ml $39 special, 3 bottles available
Rosenthal Wine Merchant’s Notes “Lignier’s Passetoutgrain is benchmark of its category, offering the finesse of far loftier appellations and embodying the authoritative depth of the house style in miniature form. The wine comprises 0.4 hectares worth of vines: 60% Gamay (from 1960) and 40% Pinot Noir (from 1998), planted within the confines of Morey-Saint-Denis proper in a site called Aux Poirelots. Aged entirely in used barrels, this cuvée is bottled without fining or filtration just before the next harvest.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Pommard En Brescul, Cote de Beaune, France 2021 750ml $135 special, 2 bottles available
Winery Notes “Vines planted in 1997, acquired in 2014. Covering an area of 41 ares, this terraced parcel on the north side of Pommard overlooks the town of Beaune and the Clos des Mouches. The vines are planted on 3 terraces due to the strong slopes on this area. Weakened by three years of hail (2012, 2013, 2014), its youth and vigour were able to give it new life and hope. The wines express minerality and freshness.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Saint-Romain Sous Le Chateau, Cote de Beaune, Burgundy 2022 750ml $75 special, 3 bottles available
Rosenthal Wine Merchant’s Notes “Hubert and Laurent began producing a Saint-Romain Blanc in 2004, the year Romain passed away, and they continue to make it in his honor today, sourcing the fruit from a 0.3-hectare parcel in the steep, southeast-facing Sous le Chateau vineyard. This site’s stony, poor-soiled terrain yields a wine of notable minerality, framed by luscious pit fruits and a tense acidity typical of the appellation. This cuvée undergoes alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel (20% new), and rests on its fine lees for 15 months with minimal batonnage before bottling.”

“Baron’s wines are among the best of the best.” —Tim Fish, Wine Spectator

“The Cayuse wines continue to set the benchmark for Rhône varieties in Washington State…” —Eric Guido, Vinous

“While the ship has long since sailed with regards to getting on the mailing list, these are singular wines well worth the effort to track down on the secondary market… As I’ve said numerous times, Christophe Baron and assistant winemaker Elizabeth Bourcier produce some of the most singular and impressive wines out there.” —Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate

It’s no secret that we’ve long adored the wines from Christophe Baron. This Champagnois-turned-Oregonian more or less put The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater on the map. His Walla Walla portfolio now includes Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet, and red blends sourced from Oregon and Washington. Representing the pinnacle of the region’s reds, we’re never surprised when top notch scores are released, just pleased as punch that we continue to be able to offer you these mailing list-mostly gems.

Not satisfied with crafting some of the most famous and sought-after wines in Walla Walla for roughly twenty years, Christophe returned to the Marne Valley of Champagne to craft exquisitely mineral Champagnes from his family’s vines. We at the shop weren’t terribly surprised by this new project given penchant for Pinot Meunier-based Champagnes from other growers in the region. Nor were we surprised at the obscene quality when he excitedly shared a magnum of the inaugural release with us.

The soils in the Marne Valley where Christophe’s grapes grow are particularly suited for Pinot Meunier being comprised of calcareous clay over pure chalk. Meunier is famed for contributing earthy spice flavors to champagne blends and is gaining prominence as a single varietal, particularly amongst grower producers.

Those looking to stock their cellar with beloved cuvées or dip their toes in the myriad options would do well to shop now while our three-day sale is on.

Medium-bodied yet round and succulent, the palate explodes with energy and a beautiful balance between dark fruit skin and earth. A food-friendly, tannic grip holds through the long, lingering, ever-evolving finish that has me coming back for more. The wine rested a year and a half in 30% new and neutral French oak barrels.”

“Enticing aromas of black cherries, blackberries, licorice, cloves, green chilis and dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Beautifully deep, fleshy and inky, with excellent freshness, too. Spicy and attention-grabbing. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 95 points
“Admittedly, I’m a lover of Tempranillo from Spain. While this is nothing close to the Rioja expression, the 2021 Impulsivo does have plenty of admirable qualities, possessing a generous profile of dusty, dark red fruit, with aromas that slowly release from the glass with elements of beef broth and sour plum reduction. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shows considerable weight and texture before displaying silky tannins with a delightful umami essence. After last year’s vintage, I’m happy to say this bottling is back on track and firing on all cylinders. The wine aged 18 months in 50% new and neutral French oak demi-muids, foudre and barrels. 4,824 bottles produced.”

The nose is aromatic and floral, with dense notes of salami, black peppercorn spice and expressive herbals intertwined with turned-earth aromas. It offers additional nuances of baked earth, savory herbs and peppercorn spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate unfolds with juicy, succulent and fresh characteristics, showcasing elegance alongside fine-grained tannins of this food-friendly Syrah.”

“A slightly darker, meatier wine, offering a Jamet-like bouquet of blackberries, ground pepper, black olive, bloody meat, crushed rocks, and violets. “Ripe black raspberries, iodine, spring flowers, gamey meats, and pepper all emerge from the 2020 Syrah En Chamberlin Vineyard, a deeper, broader, medium to full-bodied Syrah with ripe, rounded tannins, a great mid-palate, and outstanding length. This meaty, gamey, complex, classic Cayuse Syrah is already approachable today but will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15+.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2017 Brut Nature Les Hautes Blanches Vignes (Magnum) is a rich, burnished wine. Deep in color and intensity from tiny yields, the Hautes Blanches is a rich Champagne endowed with notable textural breadth and energy. Orange peel, hazelnut, dried flowers, chamomile, tangerine oil and light oxidative notes build in this powerhouse Meunier. The red fruit character of Meunier is so expressive. This is an especially vinous style, even for Christophe Baron. The Hautes Blanches Vignes is just as much wine as it is Champagne. Disgorged: May 2021.”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017 Brut Nature Les Alouettes is excellent, bursting with aromas of golden orchard fruit, warm spices, honeycomb, plums and toasted bread. Full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, it’s rich and sapid, with a layered core of fruit, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. Seamless and complete, this bottling is particularly strong this year.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2017 Brut Nature Les Alouettes (Magnum) is the most potent and tightly wound of these three Champagnes from Christophe Baron. It offers up a beguiling mix of graphite, orange confit, dried flowers, earthiness, chamomile and spice, all in a dense, inward style that demands cellaring. The Alouttes shows the more earthy, savory side of Meunier. Disgorged: May, 2021.”

Horsepower Vineyards High Contrast Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Showing with a deep ruby core that fades to a purple edge, the 2017 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard explodes from the glass with pronounced smoky aromas that waft with delicate notes of dark chocolate-covered blackberries, then show hints of roasted coffee bean, notions of petrichor, baked earth and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is elegantly powerful, showcasing a balanced chassis of youthful tannins that evolve with the complex nature of the wine. There is a velvety firmness to the mid-palate before moving onto an elongated finish that grows in complexity and amplitude as the expression resonates harmoniously, confirming yet another blockbuster Syrah from the ever-so-talented Christophe Baron. Only 386 cases made.”

Horsepower Vineyards The Tribe Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97+ points
“The 2016 Syrah The Tribe is largely in the same mold with a gamy, meaty, backward profile. Smoked meats, earthy dark fruits, ground pepper, and wood smoke are all present in this medium to full-bodied, concentrated Syrah that’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years.”

Horsepower Vineyards The Tribe Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2019 Syrah The Tribe Vineyard starts with a stemmy, fresh and savory nose with a delightful meaty aroma and dusty florals before wafting with a succulent raspberry skin essence. Medium to full-bodied, the Syrah displays a vibrant mineral tension and spicy mouthfeel before subtle flavors of dried herbs sway with a firm tannic structure. The wine continues to evolve and unpack over the long, lingering finish with a pleasing smoky nuance and persistent peppery note. Give it a few more years in the bottle before opening. Bravo!”

No Girls La Placiencia Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $125, that’s $118.75 at 5% off and $112.50 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 94 points
“Bright medium red. Highly perfumed scents of red raspberry, strawberry, flint, iodine and iron, plus a hint of orange peel that Christophe Baron attributes to magnesium in the soil. Not a particularly fleshy style but compellingly aromatic and precise, offering Côte-Rôtie-like notes of flint, black olive and violet and a lightly balsamic quality. Finishes with harmonious tannins and excellent length. This is already utterly captivating.”

No Girls La Placiencia Vineyard Tempranillo, Walla Walla Valley 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“Similarly colored, the 2016 Tempranillo La Paciencia Vineyard offers an exotic bouquet of black cherries, violets, chocolate, tobacco, smoke, and candied orange rind. It’s deep, beautiful, savory, and full-bodied, with a thrilling texture. It’s another incredibly elegant, singular wine from this estate. 321 cases.”

Familia Nin-Ortiz

“[Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz] make characterful wines, among the best in Priorat.” -Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Familia Nin-Ortiz is one of the leading lights of “New Priorat”. Both Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz are renowned viticulturists (Ester, notably, was the vineyard guru behind Clos i Terrasses/Clos Erasmus and previously worked at Mas Martinet). They were some of the earliest proponents of biodynamics in Priorat, but what they’re doing together on the winery side is stunning indeed.

They combined their personal purchases of esteemed vineyards in Priorat, Nin bought a small parcel of old-vine “Garnatxa Negre, Peluda, and Carinyena in Mas d’En Caçador– the famed vineyard on the border between Porrera and Gratallops” in 2004, per European Cellars, and Ortiz purchased “nearly 5 hectares of vineyard land outside Porrera called Finca Les Planetes.” Their mutual passion for biodynamics led to them combining forces to create Familia Nin-Ortiz. With their deep understanding of the land and their deeply thoughtful farming methods, it’s no surprise that their wines are some of the most compelling in Priorat. Their wines combine the power inherent in the terroir with a stunning sense of energy and vitality coaxed from the mostly old-vines.

Familia Nin-Ortiz ‘Planetes de Nin’, Priorat DOCa 2017 750ml Was $49, Now $44.50 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017 Planetes de Nin comes from the four hectares of 20-year-old Garnacha and 11-year-old Cariñena in the Planetes vineyard in Porrera at 450 meters in altitude. It’s 60% Garnacha (some of it Peluda) and the rest Cariñena, harvested early. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 3,200-liter oak vats and one 1,000-liter amphora for 17 months. It has depth and harmony, and the vines are getting older and seem to be better and better balanced. This is not that different from the 2016; it feels quite stable and has its style and character, especially since the 2015 vintage. 9,704 bottles were filled in April 2019.”

Familia Nin-Ortiz ‘Nit de Nin’ Mas d’en Cacador, Priorat DOCa 2017 750ml Was $99, Now $89 special, 21 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“The 2017 Nit de Nin Mas d’en Caçador is a vintage they talk about like this: “We will remember this vintage as one of the most extreme of the decade, along with that of 2012. It is in years like these that the work we do in the field is rewarded. In spite of the climatic exceptionality, we have acidity and pH that seem like a miracle to us. Our vines did not suffer the severe frosts of this 2017.” The wine has lower alcohol than the 2016 but the same pH of 3.3; insultingly young and tender, it doesn’t feel like the wine had a long élevage in oak. It has kept very good freshness and great balance. It’s tasty, pungent and long, with power and elegance and all the components to develop nicely in bottle. 1,440 bottles were filled in April 2019.”

Founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, this is a deeply historic estate. Einaudi rose to fame as a politician, eventually becoming the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Italy in 1948. He purchased the estate while working as a university professor and never missed a harvest regardless of what titles he held. He sold his grapes at first, waiting nearly twenty years before building a winery.

Today, the estate is still highly respected. It owns over 60 hectares of vines spread across twelve properties. Although the bulk of production are Dogliani Dolcettos, the Barolos are where the craft winemaking shines. The original property is at the Terlo ccru, where the single-vineyard Costa Grimaldi Barolo is sourced from. This site is almost 1,000 feet above sea level with soils rich in carlcareous marl. Their holdings in the cru of Cannubi also produce shining examples of Barolo admired for their longevity in the cellar.

“Intensely fragrant, this offers enticing scents of iris, violet and rose that mix with perfumed berry and botanical herbs. It’s loaded with finesse and flavor, doling out raspberry compote, crushed Morello cherry, licorice and a hint of mocha while taut, fine-grained tannins provide support. Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points
“The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is another terrific wine in this range from Einaudi. There is an effortless, gracious quality to the Cannubi that is impossible to miss. Expressive aromatics meld into a core of creamy, exquisitely layered Cannubi red-toned fruit. Sweet red cherry, red plum, rose petal, mint and blood orange emerge, but only with great reluctance. The 2018 is pretty closed right now, but that won’t be an issue in another few years’ time.”

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Compared to the Cannubi cru, the 2015 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is much more structured and rich. At 45 years old, these are the estate’s oldest vines at work (the youngest ones are used for the Barolo Ludo), producing a tannic but nicely balanced and approachable Barolo. There are strongly present earth tones in this vintage, such as freshly tilled soil, and as it opens you’ll discover more sweet spice and chocolate as well.”
James Suckling 94 points “There’s a wealth of ripe and rich fruit here that makes a convincing impression on the nose with red to darker cherries, plums and an array of fresh leaves and herbs. The palate has seamless, finely grained tannins that carry a smooth array of fresh and juicy red-cherry flavor. Really holds the finish well. Try from 2021.”

Wine Spectator 94 points
“Macerated cherry, black currant and tar flavors predominate, with accents of eucalyptus, tobacco and rose hip tea. Toned and graceful like an athlete, with plenty of innate power, showing terrific balance and length. Best from 2024 through 2050. 200 cases imported.”

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“With fruit from old, southeast-facing vines, the Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2017 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi shows very nicely in this hot vintage. The positioning of the vines and the age of the deeply furrowed roots surely play a big role toward achieving the balance and pretty intensity offered here. The wine is streamlined and tight, with no loose ends, held firmly together by fresh Nebbiolo acidity and well-managed tannins. There is a lot of power built up in this Terlo fruit, but the wine also reveals austerity and sharp lines. This wine is more about structure than it is fruit, and with an ample 11,266 bottles made, you can put a few of those aside for extra cellar aging.”

Charles Ellner Champagne

Considering the market dominance formerly held by the Grand Marques, there is much to be said about smaller negociants. Often combining their family’s holdings with purchased fruit from other vineyards, negociant champagne represents the juxtaposition of art and science that is assemblage. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of this expertise than the Charles Ellner portfolio. Originally working as a riddler for the other houses, Charles Ellner decided to hold back some of his family’s production for his own project.

Charles Ellner’s began as a passion project and grew as he purchased small vineyards. Today, about half of the grapes are sourced from estate vines. Their commitment to quality does not stop in the vineyard: the minimum time his Champagnes receive on the lees is double the required time. The resulting wines capture the beauty and depth of long lees aging with the freshness of non-malolactic fermentation.

International Wine Review 93 points
“The 2007 ‘Seduction’ is a lovely showing from this house. This begins to impress with inviting aromas of baked apples, pears and lemon oil with hints of toast and chalky mineral nuances all taking shape. On the palate this displays a wonderful elegant side, but with plenty of energy from the underlying acidity which drives this wine through the complex finish. Overall this is a fantastic bottle of Champagne that is drinking beautifully today and still has a few more years of drinking pleasure ahead.”

Marietta Cellars ‘Christo’ Red Blend, California, USA 2021 750ml $21.90 special, 24 bottles available
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 93 Points “The 2021 Christo is a blend of 68% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 8% Petite Sirah and 4% Viognier. The nose features fresh blackcurrant and blueberry aromas with tones of cast iron, violet, sagebrush and conifer. The full-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing with restrained, mineral-driven fruit and a long, perfumed finish. Give it 2-3 years in bottle or a couple hours in a decanter.”
STAFF PICK  Hannah “This wine is packed with French grape varietals, made by a classic California producer. On the palate it tastes of full and ripe blackberry, is rounded out with notes of pepper, licorice, and violets. The structure and tannins are full, with tons of smoothness and resolve. It will age for days (let’s be clear here, years), or can be opened and decanted to pair with a grilled meat of your choice.

Marietta Cellars Arme, Sonoma – Mendocino County, USA 2021 750ml $26 special, 11 bottles available
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 93 Points “The 2021 Armé Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with 10% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It has pretty tones of blueberries and black cherries with nuances of lavender, thyme and underbrush. The palate is medium-bodied, chalky and refreshing, with surprising depth of crunchy fruit and floral sparks across the long, juicy finish.”

CHAMPAGNE

Pierre Paillard ‘Les Parcelles’ Bouzy Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne, France NV 750ml $49 special, 36 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Points ” Made from 80% Pinot and 20% Chardonnay, with the base 2019 and the rest reserve wine from the past couple of years, the NV Champagne Grand Cru Bouzy Les Parcelles is expressive and fruit-forward on opening, with notes of cherry blossom, fresh peach, and honeycomb. With zero grams per liter dosage, there’s no lacking for ripeness and freshness. Long on the palate and quite inviting, it’s going to be wonderful drinking over the coming 8-10 years.”

Andre Clouet Grande Reserve Brut, Champagne, France NV 750ml $39 special, 26 bottles available
Decanter 92 Points [Reviewed 2021] “Incredible value for a blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir) grower Champagne from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy. It shows gorgeous aromas of stone fruit, citrus and strawberry, with complex brioche nuances, remarkable balance, ongoing elegance and a rich, refined, persistent finish.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 91 Points [Reviewed Apr 2021] “The NV Brut Grand Réserve Grand Cru is a pure Pinot Noir from Bouzy. It’s pure, fresh, fine and aromatic on the nose and round and delicate on the palate. The fruit-intense finish is chalky-mineral and stimulatingly fresh in its salty finesse and elegant yeastiness. Nice lemon juice flavors give an extra kick of refreshment. This is a picture-book NV Brut. No indication of disgorgement given.”

Andre Clouet Brut Nature Silver, Champagne, France NV 750ml $39 special, 13 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92+ Points [Reviewed Apr 2021] “Clouet’s NV Silver Brut Nature Grand Cru is a pure Bouzy Pinot Noir that was disgorged without any dosage. This disgorgement displays a medium intense golden color and a complex and refined bouquet of ripe and pureed apples and discreet chalky as well as brioche aromas. The palate is elegant, straight and fresh, very pure and salty on the finish. This is a challenging Brut Nature that needs to be aged for two or three years to gain complexity and finesse and to smooth its current edges. The finish is mineral, limestone and salty but also a bit drying at this moment.”

FRANCE

Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, France 2021 750ml $95 special, 24 bottles available

Full-bodied and layered, ever-so-velvety tannins wrap this elegant-to-the-core polished red, before concluding with a bright finish.”
Wine Spectator 94 Points “Toasty, meaty and inviting, this fresh red shows an understated, savory side, with notes of singed spices, mesquite, wet earth and fresh tobacco leaf flanking a silky range of plum and warm cherry compote flavors. This channels its terroir, with a round feel held in check by refined tannins, while the finish is lined with cool minerality and heavy iron. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Terret Blanc, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul de Pinet, Bourboulenc, Picardan and Roussanne.”

Vietti Tre Vigne Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy 2021 750ml $26 special, 20 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 Points “The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Tre Vigne is a fabulous, explosive wine. Sumptuous dark cherry, ripe plum, mocha, licorice and new leather are all dialed up to the maximum. This racy, deep Barbera is tremendous. For its quality-to-price ratio, the Alba Tre Vigne might be the wine of the year at Vietti.”
James Suckling 92 Points “Notes of ripe plums and blackberries with dark spicy chocolate, moist bark and wet asphalt. Juicy and racy on the palate with medium to full body and vivid acidity. Tense with dusty tannins and a seamless, lengthy finish.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 Points “The 2021 Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne is a fabulous, explosive wine. Sumptuous dark cherry, ripe plum, mocha, licorice and new leather are all dialed up to the maximum. This racy, deep Barbera is tremendous. For its quality-to-price ratio, the Asti Tre Vigne might be the wine of the year at Vietti.”

Vinous 92 Points “The 2021 Chianti Classico is an absolute joy. Fragrant, silky and superexpressive, the 2021 captures all the finesse of Radda. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, orange peel and mint are all beautifully delineated in a vibrant, mid-weight Chianti Classico that has so much to offer. This is a fine showing.”

Chateau de Rouanne Vinsobres, Rhone, France 2020 750ml $26 special, 36+ bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 92 Points “A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, the classic 2020 Vinsobres from this château is beautiful and has a round, supple, elegant, medium to full-bodied style as well as textbook blackberry and black raspberry fruits, some peppery herb and floral nuances, remarkable purity, and a great finish. Kumeu River Rays Road Chardonnay, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand 2022 750ml $39 special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 94 Points “Lemony and crisp with a stone and seashell undertone to the pretty fruit. Medium body, firm phenolics that tighten the wine on the palate. Racy and intense on the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
Erin Larken-Wine Advocate 93 Points “The 2022 Rays Road Chardonnay is fine and spicy, with a tense line of acidity and phenolics—they feel linear and interwoven—that stream through the fruit. This is a very pretty, pithy Chardonnay with ground white pepper, white flesh peach, crushed shells, layers of juniper berry and star anise/cut fennel inflections. I like the staying power of the fruit in the mouth. It is persistent and long.”

Racines Grand Reserve Sparkling Chardonnay, Sta Rita Hills, USA NV 750ml $66 special, 5 bottles available
Decanter 96 Points “This is the best American sparkling wine I’ve ever tasted. The 2019 vintage base also includes 25% reserve wines from the 2017 and 2018 harvests. This Grand Reserve Chardonnay made from the cool Sta Rita Hills is crafted with a Champagne pedigree, and it shows. This Blanc de Blancs from across renowned Sta Rita Hills vineyards has undeniable Old World charm and sophistication. The aromatics boast ample toasted biscuit notes and great yeasty complexity from the 30 months on lees. The palate has a fantastic depth of fruit, spiced pear, cardamom, nutmeg and bruised apples. There is a subtlety of savoury biscuits and hints of almond cream. Elegant, yet bold and wildly delicious.”
