Your Three-Day Discount Starts Now

Founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, this is a deeply historic estate. Einaudi rose to fame as a politician, eventually becoming the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Italy in 1948. He purchased the estate while working as a university professor and never missed a harvest regardless of what titles he held. He sold his grapes at first, waiting nearly twenty years before building a winery.

Today, the estate is still highly respected. It owns over 60 hectares of vines spread across twelve properties. Although the bulk of production are Dogliani Dolcettos, the Barolos are where the craft winemaking shines. The original property is at the Terlo ccru, where the single-vineyard Costa Grimaldi Barolo is sourced from. This site is almost 1,000 feet above sea level with soils rich in carlcareous marl. Their holdings in the cru of Cannubi also produce shining examples of Barolo admired for their longevity in the cellar.

“Intensely fragrant, this offers enticing scents of iris, violet and rose that mix with perfumed berry and botanical herbs. It’s loaded with finesse and flavor, doling out raspberry compote, crushed Morello cherry, licorice and a hint of mocha while taut, fine-grained tannins provide support. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2023–2035.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points
“The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is another terrific wine in this range from Einaudi. There is an effortless, gracious quality to the Cannubi that is impossible to miss. Expressive aromatics meld into a core of creamy, exquisitely layered Cannubi red-toned fruit. Sweet red cherry, red plum, rose petal, mint and blood orange emerge, but only with great reluctance. The 2018 is pretty closed right now, but that won’t be an issue in another few years’ time.”

Poderi Luigi Einaudi Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Compared to the Cannubi cru, the 2015 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is much more structured and rich. At 45 years old, these are the estate’s oldest vines at work (the youngest ones are used for the Barolo Ludo), producing a tannic but nicely balanced and approachable Barolo. There are strongly present earth tones in this vintage, such as freshly tilled soil, and as it opens you’ll discover more sweet spice and chocolate as well.”
James Suckling 94 points “There’s a wealth of ripe and rich fruit here that makes a convincing impression on the nose with red to darker cherries, plums and an array of fresh leaves and herbs. The palate has seamless, finely grained tannins that carry a smooth array of fresh and juicy red-cherry flavor. Really holds the finish well. Try from 2021.”

Poderi Luigi Einaudi Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“Macerated cherry, black currant and tar flavors predominate, with accents of eucalyptus, tobacco and rose hip tea. Toned and graceful like an athlete, with plenty of innate power, showing terrific balance and length. Best from 2024 through 2050. 200 cases imported.”

Poderi Luigi Einaudi Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“With fruit from old, southeast-facing vines, the Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2017 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi shows very nicely in this hot vintage. The positioning of the vines and the age of the deeply furrowed roots surely play a big role toward achieving the balance and pretty intensity offered here. The wine is streamlined and tight, with no loose ends, held firmly together by fresh Nebbiolo acidity and well-managed tannins. There is a lot of power built up in this Terlo fruit, but the wine also reveals austerity and sharp lines. This wine is more about structure than it is fruit, and with an ample 11,266 bottles made, you can put a few of those aside for extra cellar aging.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:

Charles Ellner Champagne

Considering the market dominance formerly held by the Grand Marques, there is much to be said about smaller negociants. Often combining their family’s holdings with purchased fruit from other vineyards, negociant champagne represents the juxtaposition of art and science that is assemblage. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of this expertise than the Charles Ellner portfolio. Originally working as a riddler for the other houses, Charles Ellner decided to hold back some of his family’s production for his own project.

Charles Ellner’s began as a passion project and grew as he purchased small vineyards. Today, about half of the grapes are sourced from estate vines. Their commitment to quality does not stop in the vineyard: the minimum time his Champagnes receive on the lees is double the required time. The resulting wines capture the beauty and depth of long lees aging with the freshness of non-malolactic fermentation.

Charles Ellner Seduction Brut Millesime 2007 750ml Was $69, Now $59, 16 bottles in stock now
International Wine Review 93 points
“The 2007 ‘Seduction’ is a lovely showing from this house. This begins to impress with inviting aromas of baked apples, pears and lemon oil with hints of toast and chalky mineral nuances all taking shape. On the palate this displays a wonderful elegant side, but with plenty of energy from the underlying acidity which drives this wine through the complex finish. Overall this is a fantastic bottle of Champagne that is drinking beautifully today and still has a few more years of drinking pleasure ahead.”
