Goodfellow – Newest (And Greatest?) Releases & Sale 5-30-24

Goodfellow Family Cellars:

New Releases & Three-Day Discount

Marcus Goodfellow is one of the most talented winemakers in Oregon, joined by the equally talented and knowledgeable Megan Joy. Their wines showcase their microscopic understanding of the potential in the terroirs of the Willamette Valley. Together, they craft wines that continually improve—both in the cellar and vintage to vintage. We love the wines for their coiled power and Burgundian structure, and we stack them enthusiastically & abundantly in our own personal cellars to adore for decades to come.

Marcus Goodfellow and Megan Joy, from Goodfellow Family CellarsWe’re excited to announce their latest releases: sparkling wines that reflect their admiration for precise and mineral grower Champagne. The three Goodfellow sparkling wines have been highly anticipated among our staff for years (after a friend shared their secret). According to Marcus, they created sparkling wines partly for the challenge, partly because their proclivities for low-alcohol-yielding sites, and partly because of their love of grower Champagne. Production began with the 2019 vintage, with grapes from select parcels within the Whistling Ridge, Temperance Hill, Durant, and Tsai vineyards. The wines are all multi-vintage with significant portions of reserve wines that aged on the lees for up to almost three years. These are terroir-driven works of art from two of the Valley’s finest winemakers.

Don’t miss the releases from Tsai Vineyard, a new-to-the-winery vineyard in the north-western part of the Yamhill-Carlton. Surrounded by forest and orchards, this vineyard was planted on volcanic soils, which is unusual for the AVA. It is dry farmed, LIVE certified, transitioning to organic, and is home to some of the oldest own-rooted vines in the Willamette Valley.

“Marcus Goodfellow is sourcing fruit from some of the finest vineyards in Willamette… dry farmed and from old vineyards planted to an array of clones. We visited the old, gnarled vines at Durant vineyard in Dundee Hills, planted with Pinot Noir in 1973 and with Chardonnay in 1993, and the Whistling Ridge Vineyard in Ribbon Ridge, planted in 1990. ‘Old vines are still the trump card,’ he says. ‘The vines situate themselves to the site. The old vines give wines that are ethereal, elegant, layered and don’t speak too loud.’ The wines combine layers of pure, ripe fruit, earth and amaro-like aromatics.” -Erin Brooks, writing for the Wine Advocate

“Marcus Goodfellow makes some of the most elegant and precise New World Pinot Noirs that I know of… The Pinots (and Chardonnays) are distinctly taut and precise, and they rarely hit above 13.5% alcohol. I cannot recommend them highly enough to readers who prize this style.” -the late Josh Raynolds, writing for Vinous Media

Sparkling Wines Arriving Today:

Goodfellow Family Cellars Willamette Valley Extra Brut NV 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 34 bottles available
Winery note
“Comprised of 67% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Noir, from vintages 2019-2022. Elevage is a range of larger format French oak and Acacia puncheons. This is an early disgorgement, but the wine contains a significant percentage of reserve wines aged 30 months or longer on lees in puncheon. My favorite things about this wine are its refinement, layering, and integration. It is both light bodied and ethereal, but with excellent texture and suppleness. It moves through a range of aromatics, stony, citrusy, with touches of yeast esters, a bit of stoniness, it’s both brightly fresh and yet texturally mature. Light in the mouth at 12.2%, it covers mineral notes, mandarins, and pastry dough. The polished elegance and refinement is balanced by a lovely freshness in the acidity. The bottle disappears quite quickly.”
Tech data “62 cases disgorged 4/2/24. 2.5 g/l dosage, 68% Chardonnay/32% Pinot Noir, from a range of older cooperage from 820L puncheons down to 225L barrels. Fruit from the Tsai, Durant, Whistling Ridge, and Temperance Hill Vineyards.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Durant Vineyard Blanc de Blancs NV 750ml Displayed Price: $56, that’s $53.20 at 5% off and $50.40 at 10% off, 24 bottles available
Winery note
“100% Chardonnay from volcanic clay soils. Durant is East facing, and the bulk of this wine is from older vines (1993) planted at the foot of the hill. Cool air pools in the block, keeping acids high and slowing sugar accumulation as the fruit ripens leading to an optimal situation for sparkling wine. Elevage is all in larger barrels from vintages 2019 and 2021 (55%/45%), tirage 4/2022. Aromatically, this wine jumps from the glass. Lemon curd, wheat fields, pastry dough, toasted hazelnuts, apple pie, and grilled bread. In the palate it is tranquil and smooth, staying with citrus notes and river stones. Lots of suppleness and movement, and a layer of density up from the Willamette Valley, that all flows down the palate into a lovely balanced finish. While this has two years in bottle on the lees, it also has significant amounts of reserve wines that spent more than 30 months on the lees in puncheon, so the development is exceptional for this age.”
Tech data “162 cases disgorged on 4/1/24, 100% Chardonnay, .5 g/l dosage, 2021/2019 base wines. Elevage was in 820L and 500L used oak barrels, 100% Durant fruit on volcanic soils. The lower planting of Chardonnay at Durant is at the foot of the hill and cool air sits down in the block cooling the vines and allowing them to hold acidity longer and slowing sugar accumulation. It allows us to pick ripe fruit at the correct acid and sugar levels for sparkling wines.”

Whistling Ridge Vyd, from Goodfellow Family Cellars
Goodfellow Family Cellars Whistling Ridge Vineyard Blanc de Blancs NV 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 23 bottles available
Winery note
“100% Chardonnay grown on sedimentary soils on top of Ribbon Ridge. Vintages 2019-2021. The original multi-clonal Chardonnay planting of Whistling Ridge together with the vines we top-grafted over to cuttings from Cameron’s Clos Electrique. More than 10 different known clones between them (including a section of the old Mt. Eden massale block brought to Oregon by John Paul of Cameron winery in the 80s.) Skins are thicker and the shallow soils offer intensely flavored fruit and high acidity, at low Brix. Aromatics are flinty in nature, seawater, oyster shells, stony, struck match and more oceanic qualities. In the mouth, more stones, kaffir lime curd, mandarin peel, steel, and star fruit. This is the densest of the wines, and perhaps the most youthful/energetic in the palate (we bottled two Blanc de Blancs cuvees from Whistling Ridge in the first round of tirage and the other will sleep in bottle a few more years). It’s bursting with flavor, and there is the signature youthful cut, astringency, and drive of Whistling Ridge. As much as this cuvee also has a big percentage of wine with more than 30 months on lees prior to going to bottle for two more years, there is a distinct feel of a punk rock attitude here. The wine is best consumed over as many hours as you can give it…just like every other Whistling Ridge wine.”
Tech data “121 cases all disgorged 4/1/24. 100% Chardonnay, no dosage, base wines from 2019/2020/2021. Elevage was from older 820L, and one 600L, puncheon. Shallow sedimentary soils, little topsoil moisture, and regular wind give Chardonnay from Whistling Ridge a very specific flavor profile and this wine has the saline, seaspray, and orchard fruit typical of the vineyard.“

Goodfellow Family Cellars Tsai Vineyard Pinot Blanc, Yamhill-Carlton 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 26 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“I love this wine…it’s my perfect combination of weightless, supple, and zingy. So refreshing…like fresh squeezed lemonade but add in bright aromas of pear and orchard fruit, along with a hint of pastry dough. The palate is bright, light-bodied, it wants to be snappy so badly but Pinot Blanc just has to be supple and textural…so. If Pinot Blanc were grown in Chablis this is what it would taste like. Perfect with simply prepared shellfish: oysters on the halfshell, scallops, crab, even lobster. 113 cases produced.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Whistling Ridge Vineyard Riesling, Ribbon Ridge 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $28, that’s $26.60 at 5% off and $25.20 at 10% off, 30 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Lime peel, stone fruit, tangerine, rainier cherry, and river stones. Raised in an old 820L Acacia puncheon, this is textural and tranquil in the attack, then unfolds like a flower blossom in the palate with soft fruit and florals which give way to juicy, lingering acidity. Tasting this is entertaining, the original tranquility and supple texture suggests one direction, and then the explosion of nuance in the mid-palate reverses course, the acidity is soft and juicy but somehow sustains much longer than one would expect. This is one of my favorite versions of this wine. 11.1% abv and 86 cases produced.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars “Vin Soif” Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Yellow apple, pear, lime flower and peel, almonds, hints of tarragon and pastry dough. In the mouth, it’s more yellow apples and pear, underripe nectarine, lime peel, and a distinct stoniness. Bottled a year early from our normal Chardonnay program, the impetus for this wine was to push for a pretty, nervy, and slightly less lees inflected wine for everyday enjoyment. 12.0% abv and 198 cases produced.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay, Yamhill-Carlton 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $28, that’s $26.60 at 5% off and $25.20 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“The 2021 Yamhill-Carlton Chardonnay is a puncheon from the Tsai Vineyard. The vines were planted in 2001, and the vineyard is on Jory soils, unusual in the Y-C AVA, and faces due south. The deeper soils match well with no till farming, and keeps the fruit balanced between ripening flavors without quick sugar accumulation leading to a very classic style of Chardonnay. It’s a native ferment, and the wine has an excellent length and weight. There is more minerality in the finish of the Y-C than the vineyard designate, but it is also a bit more rustic. I see this as a great match for white fish, like rockfish or sole, or flavorful chicken dishes.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Temperance Hill Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“The 2021 Chardonnay Temperance Hill is incredible in its aromatics for lovers of well-managed reduction. Bright golden-yellow, it’s flush with flint wet stones, vibrant citrus, and golden pineapple. Full-bodied, with a core of driving citrus and energetic acidity, it has a long and saline finish, with a weightless feel and elegant balance. It has a lovely, rounded edge to its acidity and does not come across as harsh. This is an outstanding and age-worthy wine to drink 2025-2035.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 94+ points “The 2021 Chardonnay Temperance Hill is intense, with a burst of flinty crushed stone, incense and savory herbs giving way to ginger-spiked yellow apples. This is round and soothing, showing its minerality up front, as a wave of ripe orchard fruits is complicated by a white pepper tinge. This was refined in 50% new oak, adding a lovely depth to the palate. Juicy acidity maintains balance as the 2021 leaves a tart lemon rind twang and hints of sour melon lingering throughout the lightly structured finale. While youthfully tense, time will unfurl the 2021 Temperance Hill’s depths of complexity.”
Winery note “The 2021 Temperance Hill shows aromatics of lemon oil and zest with mandarin, stone fruits, almond paste, white flowers and kaffir lime leaf. This wine marries the power and savory nature of Temperance Hill with the fruit intensity and cut of 2021. From Jancis Robinson: ‘Really edgy, precise ¬fruit. Crystalline. Exciting! Lightly smoky. Long.’”

Tsai Vineyard, from Goodfellow Family CellarsGoodfellow Family Cellars Tsai Vineyard Chardonnay, Yamhill-Carlton 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“The medium golden 2021 Chardonnay Tsai Vineyard is ripe with forward aromatics of preserved Meyer lemon, toasted spice, pineapple rind, and gunflint. Medium-bodied and silky on the palate, it has great balanced energy as well as a long, clean finish, with notes of lemon custard on the back palate. Drink 2024-2030.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 91 points “The 2021 Chardonnay Tsai Vineyard opens in the glass with a delicate blend of white flowers, spice and crushed yellow apples. It’s softly textured with brisk acidity and a cascade of mineral-tinged orchard fruits. This finishes savory and long, leaving hints of sour melon and a lingering tactile mineral sensation. The Tsai Vineyard Chardonnay gains in volume and depth the longer it sits in the glass.”
Winery note “The 2021 Tsai Vineyard is yellow fruited, floral with pear, apple skin, cream, pie crust and a minty hint of bright herb. Medium full on the palate this has weight and richness to it, but ultimately has a nervier presentation through the back end, and finishes with a mouthwatering acidity.”

“Peach blossoms, wild strawberries, star fruit, green melon, light florals. This is very pretty in the nose, light bodied with plenty of flavor, and brightly refreshing to drink. The bottle disappears quickly. Perfect for sunny days watching the hummingbirds, grilling chicken, and sushi. 82% direct press from the blanc de noir program and 18% saignee from100% whole cluster ferments of Whistling Ridge and Durant. 12.3% abv and 266 cases produced.”

Winery note
“The 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir shows aromatics of sweet dark strawberry, boysenberry and black cherry fruits. On the palate more dark black and red fruits, coffee, floral, and amaro notes, and an overlying savory, dark and wild spice and kitchen herb. Tannins are fine, but firm on the finish, and the palate is juicy and medium-light bodied . As with all of our Pinot Noirs, fermentations are 100% whole cluster, and relatively cool and slow, with native yeast in small 1.5 ton bins, and free run wine goes directly into barrel where it sits on the lees undisturbed for the duration of elevage. Cooperage is a mixture of new and used larger format (500L) puncheons, and neutral barriques.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Temperance Hill Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 28 bottles in stock now
Goodfellow wines, from the Deep Roots CoalitionEric Guido-Vinous 93+ points
“The remarkably pretty 2021 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill slowly evolves in the glass, wafting up with a bouquet of dried strawberries, cedar, crushed stone, and dusty rose. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied weight and crisp red fruits cascading across a core of brisk acidity. Tactile mineral tones mingle with a gentle layer of fine tannins as the 2021 finishes a spicy citrus twang, long and staining yet still remarkably fresh. 100% whole cluster.”
Winery note “Temperance Hill Vineyard is located in the Eola Amity Hills and faces directly into the Van Duzer Corridor, where the break in Oregon’s Coast Range allows the cool winds from the Pacific into the Willamette Valley. Vines grow here in primarily medium depth volcanic soils, and the winds are a constant influence in the West facing blocks (West Field and Chardonnay). Pumphouse faces SE is the highest elevation fruit we work with. First established in the early 80s, it is a classic grand terroir of Oregon.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Pumphouse Block Temperance Hill Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 92 points
“The 2021 Pinot Noir Pumphouse Block is sourced from the Temperance Hill Vineyard and pours a touch deeper ruby hue, with aromas of grenadine, violets, cinnamon, and forest herbs. Structured and medium-bodied, it has a gripping youthful texture, with loads of spice filling the palate and a bit of stemmy astringency throughout that will need time to potentially harmonize. It’s going to need time to see where this goes, but it has potential for sure. Drink 2025-2035. 118 cases were produced.”
Winery note “One to wait for, but absolutely worth it in the end. On first opening very tight, with tart red fruits and tannic structure on the palate that seems to overwhelm everything that came before. Then with a day or two open the wine blossoms: phenomenal texture and richness of weight, aromatics of lilac, five spice, cedar, cinnamon and rose petals, more cedar and cigar box, richer red fruits, wet stones…. hold for now, but the payout will be excellent. Drink 2027-2050.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 34 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 93 points
“The 2021 Pinot Noir Whistling Ridge is spicy and savory in the glass, leading with a rich blend of steeped plums, cola and rose petals giving way to hints of clove. This is lifted and finessed with pretty red berries and suggestions of cocoa and inner florals, all guided by fresh acidity. The 2021 tapers off with medium length and a crunchy sensation, leaving just a tinge of fine tannin framing the experience beautifully. Of note, the Whistling Ridge took three hours to blossom, and it was worth the wait.”
Winery note “Whistling Ridge Vineyard is the reason that we make wine. Wild, with sedimentary soils that dry out quickly in the summer months. The vineyard is located right above Beaux Freres Estate, and next to the top of Patricia Greene, in the Ribbon Ridge AVA. Exposed on the ridge top, a strong wind blows in from the north and cools the vines every day in the late afternoon. In 2021 the only moisture of the summer pelted down right in the middle of bloom, rinsing off pollen and insuring a small set throughout the vineyard.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Heritage No. 19, Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $66.50, that’s $63.18 at 5% off and $59.85 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“Coming from the Whistling Ridge and pouring a deeper ruby hue, the 2021 Pinot Noir Heritage No. 19 is floral, ripe, and spicy with aromas of grenadine, violets, licorice candy, and sage. Medium-bodied and spicy, with stemmy forest herbs, dried orange peel, and smoky earth, it has gripping structure and a savory finish. Drink 2025-2035.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Heritage No. 17, Durant Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Deeper red hues and spice on the nose, black cherry, boysenberry, violets, cardamom, balsam, enveloping and textural with juicy, lovely acidity, firm tannins on opening that integrate over several days as the weight and texture of the wine fills in. Aromatically, the high point seems to really arrive after being open for about 48 hours, and the seamless interplay between fruit, baking spice, loamy earth, and hints of kitchen herbs is dramatic and superlative. In the zone the nose here is absolutely intoxicating.”

Kopke & Legendary Colheita Ports

Your Three-Day Discount Starts Now

Some of the world’s oldest wineries are still quietly making some of the most profound wines for their region. These estates have been loved and sought-after for generations. Think of Saint Cosme in Gigondas, Schloss Gobelsburg in the Kamptal region of Austria, Karthäuserhof in the Mosel, Ricasoli and Antinori in Tuscany, and Kopke in the Douro.

A view of the vineyards of KopkeKopke, founded in 1638, makes what might be the most vibrant and long-lived port wines available. They have been through adverse times in their nearly 400-year history, seeing dramatic shifts in the climate, swings in the popularity of their product, and the rise and fall of populist dictators. Through all of this, they’ve been consistent in their commitment to making the greatest Tawny and Colheita (vintage Tawny) Port available.

We’re fortunate to have a tremendous lineup available with additional stock that just landed, including Colheita vintages dating back to 1957, and a 30-year and 40-year Tawny. The unbelievably youthful vintage Colheitas are perfect examples of how age adds concentration and depth, with the traditional Kopke freshness that keeps these so vibrant. All of our selections will continue to show their highlights and develop rich spice and dried fruit characteristics for years to come.

Although the main focus of Kopke has always been its Colheita and Tawnies, they also craft exceptional Vintage Port. In 1922, the Port House acquired the Quinta de São Luiz, recognized as one of the most important estates in the Douro due to the quality of its vineyards and its history. You can experience two Vintage Ports from this estate, the 2015 and 2019.

Kopke 30 Year Old Tawny Port 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“A very inviting, open style, with butterscotch and caramel notes framing the core of glazed pear, caramelized peach, golden raisin and warm fig flavors. The lush finish lets crème brûlée and ginger cream details hang, showing a flash of honeysuckle for lift. Drink now. 200 cases imported.”
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 93 points “The NV 30 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork and 130 grams per liter of residual sugar. The last release I saw of this was pretty fine. So, too, here. This adds a layer of depth and more complexity to the Burmester, although it lacks the Burmester’s elegance and sex appeal. While the finish here is bigger and more gripping, it is no more flavorful (actually, less so). Still, as this rolls around the mouth, it is impressive, not necessarily more exciting than the Burmester, but definitely different stylistically. They are good examples of the diversity you can get in one portfolio. As always, these last indefinitely, barring cork failures, but they are not really meant to be held.”

Kopke 40 Year Old Tawny Port 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“This offers a dreamy mix of caramelized pear, fig and peach flavors at the core, while caramel, sesame oil and date notes fill in through the expansive finish. At first glance this is quite lush, but the finish lingers with cut and drive. Drink now. 200 cases imported.”
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 93 points “The NV 40 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2016 with a bar top cork and 145 grams per liter of residual sugar. This adds a bit more brandy as a nuance on the finish to the 30, reviewed this issue, but it still seems much like the 30 Year Old, surprisingly fresh and easy, beautifully balanced and on the lighter side in terms of mid-palate concentration. It is a lovely tawny on its own terms–I’m just not sure it delivers enough of an uptick to justify the price spike from the 30 (or, perhaps even the 20). On its own, though, it won’t disappoint. The price references a 750 milliliter bottle.”

Kopke Colheita Tawny Port 1957 750ml Displayed Price: $489, that’s $464.55 at 5% off and $440.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Harriet Kininmonth-IWSC 98 points
“Still showing elegance and incredible complexity when considering the age. Soft and mellow, loaded with ripe soft stone fruit. Harmonious yet still has austere delights to savour. Still has development to come.”
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 1957 Colheita Tawny Port was seen before, but it’s worth revisiting in the USA, since it’s a great wine. This is also the new 2015 bottling. It has 127 grams per liter of residual sugar. It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavors that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit flavor and seems to linger indefinitely. When I first saw this, it was tasted next to even more brilliant Colheitas and a bit overshadowed. On its own, it is even more stunning. It was pretty fine next to some other greats here as well.”
Roger Voss-Wine Enthusiast 95 points “There is a great balance between acidity and impressively fresh fruit considering the age of this venerable Port. Of course there are many flavors from the wood aging, but they are combined with orange marmalade, fig and raisin flavors in a riot of complex flavors that have created a very great wine. It comes from a year that was not generally declared as a vintage. -Roger Voss”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Baked pear, dried apricot and roasted apple flavors dominate in this mature yet fresh-tasting version. White pepper and lightly smoky notes show on the fresh finish. Rich and complex. Drink now. 200 cases imported. — KM”

Kopke Colheita 1966 bottleKopke Colheita Tawny Port 1966 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 1966 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 126.3 grams per liter of residual sugar, and comes with a bar top cork (as is typical here). As we start getting seriously old in the lineup from Sogevinus this issue, this shows what you get with increasing age: the superb concentration of flavor, the long, intense finishes and the complex medley of flavors that old Tawnies deliver effortlessly. That, to me, is what makes them worth the extra bucks. If some of the youngsters lean more to caramel, this adds more molasses with a touch of Brandy in the background. The concentrated flavors linger more or less endlessly, driven into the palate by the wine’s power and acidity. You can smell and taste this for a long time. The graceful mid-palate is deceptively friendly at first. It sure does grip the palate at the end, though, finishing with juicy bursts of fruit and sugar. Over several days, it acquired a bit more harmony and shed a touch of aggression. The alcohol, speaking relatively, is not as well integrated here as with the 1965, also reviewed, but that is relative. I tended to like this just slightly better anyway for its complexity and concentration on several fronts. The freshness on the 1965 is quite enticing, though. It tastes younger. It depends on what you want: that old-wine complexity and depth or a livelier feel. They both have plenty of power on the finish. You can’t go wrong, really.”

Kopke Colheita Tawny Port 1967 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 1967 Colheita Tawny Port comes in with 142 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a nice step up compared to the younger parts of the lineup, elegant and focused, with a precise finish, a fresh feel, little discernible brandy and a long, long finish. The classic old tawny flavors of molasses and caramel wash over the palate. This isn’t big and thick, but some may very well prefer its elegant and brighter feel. In many ways, it is fresher than the 1981 or 1999 reviewed this issue, and it is better balanced than the 1937. It is very pretty.”

Kopke Vintage Port Quinta de São Luiz 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 92 points
“A flattering style, with a generous feel to the mix of raspberry, boysenberry and blackberry puree flavors that glide through. Light fruitcake and red licorice accents infuse the finish, which has a nice kick of freshness. Best from 2028 through 2045. 200 cases imported. — JM”
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 90-92 points “The 2015 Vintage Port Quinta S. Luiz is a single-quinta Porto that is a 50/50 blend of Touriga Nacional and a field blend from old vines (over 50 years old). It comes in at 102 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is elegant and shows excellent finesse. There’s not a lot of concentration, perhaps, but this delicious Kopke does have fine structure. It finishes with tension and increasingly assertive tannins as it airs out. Nicely done overall, this shows the potential to age well and improve in the cellar. This single-quinta Porto is more or less as good as its declared vintage sibling (the Cálem, this issue, also from Sogevinus). This is a bit pricier, though, and the styles are rather different, that Cálem feeling fuller in the mouth, while this feels harder edged. This was a tank sample, out of barrel and the final blend, when tasted.”

Kopke Vintage Port Quinta de São Luiz 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“This has some flash, with bright cassis, plum and boysenberry purée flavors that have a nice, caressing feel. Loads of anise, red tea, fruitcake and melted licorice notes entwine themselves to the fruit, leading to a seductive finish. Best from 2040 through 2060. 350 cases made, 10 cases imported. — JM”

Kopke Vintage Port 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Roger Voss-Wine Enthusiast 96 points
“This is a luscious wine, with tannins that are cushioned by the ripe plum and prune fruits. That doesn’t mean it is likely to develop too quickly, but is ready to take its time, bringing out the opulent character of the wine as well as its structure. Drink from 2028.”

Domaine Grand Veneur

Alain Jaume’s Domaine Grand Veneur is a trailblazer in Chateauneuf-du-Pape that continues to make some of the finest wines in the appellation. The family-owned estate crafts some of the most dramatic and opulent bottlings in the Southern Rhone, and their prices make them a steal compared to their nearest competitors. The 2017 Les Origines hails from the very north of the appellation in a vineyard strewn with rocks and soils rich in red clay. The wine is deeply complex and powerful with a long drinking window.

Grand Veneur winesJeb Dunnuck 95+ points “The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Origines takes things up a notch on the serious scale and has a much more concentrated, focused, structured style. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah that saw 50% new barrels, it offers a rich, concentrated, focused texture, notes of black raspberries, roasted garrigue, pepper, and tons of minerality, building tannins, and outstanding length. The new oak is beautifully integrated, it’s perfectly balanced, and it’s one of those wines that has a kiss of modern character yet stays firmly planted in the Southern Rhône.”
Anna Lee C. Iijima-Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Cellar Selection. In contrast to the sun-drenched red fruit of this producer’s other special cuvée, the Vieilles Vignes, Les Origines is the darker, more sultry sibling. Flavors of crème de cassis and spiced black plums are densely concentrated, almost languorous in mouthfeel, but edged by lifting tones of crushed earth and smoky minerals. It’s still a bit closed in character but should open from 2022 and improve further well through 2030.”

Extremely limited!

Unlike 1976’s infamous Judgement of Paris, this wine is a celebration of transatlantic winemaking collaboration rather than a competition. When two of the world’s most famous winemakers, Bordeaux’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Napa’s Robert Mondavi, joined forces to create a unique masterpiece in 1979, this new winemaking legend was born.

Opus One, Napa Valley, USA 2017 750ml $358 special, 2 bottles available
Decanter 96 Points ” A fist of late summer cherries, raspberry and bilberry fruits set out their stall, all with the juicy character that confirms, even in a hot vintage like 2017, Opus can deliver balance and sculpted elegance. Beautiful grip, creamy texture with a strikingly powerful tannic frame. As the wine stays in the glass the floral aromatics begin to bloom up. A brilliant Opus. 20 days maceration – around half what it would have been a decade ago. 54% native yeast, as part of their native yeast project. 5% Merlot and 1% Malbec complete the blend. Harvest spread out over September 5 to October 8, just before the fires, by which time they had less than 10% of the fruit still out on the vines.”

Arnaud Lambert.

While soft-spoken and humble, Arnaud Lambert is a leading voice in the natural wine movement in the appellations of Saumur and Saumur-Champigny. His goal is to re-discover each individual terroir and its potential through organic viticulture and less-is-more, precision based winemaking. Arnaud strives for consistent methods in the cellar, so that the terroir of each of his five crus is what shines through.

Arnaud Lambert ‘Breze’ Saumur Blanc Clos de Midi, Loire, France 2022 750ml $23.50 special, 36 bottles available
No reviews for the 2022 vintage. Recent review provided for reference.
Wine Spectator 93 Points “This offers an expressive mix of yellow apple, persimmon and Meyer lemon flavors infused with light notes of hazelnut and hints of smoke. The acidity is electric, giving this plenty of verve and carrying all the elements to the long and seductive, lightly floral finish. Best from 2022 through 2034.”

Arnaud Lambert ‘Breze’ Saumur Rouge Clos Mazurique, Loire, France 2022 750ml $21.90 special, 12 bottles available
Importer Notes “There are few wines in the world that carry this level of class, sophistication and low price. Straight out of the gates this Cabernet Franc overflows with perfumes of red and dark cherry, persian mulberry, persimmon, mandarin orange, strongly-scented red and white flowers, gravel, wet forest and minerals. Yes, this little guy is extremely complex!

Arnaud Lambert Saumur Blanc La Coulee de Saint-Cyr, Loire, France 2020 750ml $41.90 special, 15 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 Points “From an east-facing 1.7-hectare plot (Les Perriéres) on top of the SCB hill, the 2018 Saumur Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg Coulée de St-Cyr opens with a deep, pure, yet intense and complex bouquet of ripe fruits intertwined with notes of crushed limestone and popcorn. Pure, refined and salty on the palate, this is a full-bodied, quite rich yet tight, fresh and persistently salty Chenin with fine yet sustainable tannins and a lot of nervy lime juice, salt and tension. This is a fantastic Chenin from limestone terroir (topped with a 50-centimeter layer of clay and salt) that is normally used for Cabernet Franc. I tasted the wine from the same bottle over 14 days, and I’d say the wine got finer and finer.”

Thibaud Boudignon.

“Thibaud Boudignon is unquestionably one of the most exciting figures in wine today. Originally from Bordeaux, he honed his winemaking craft while working at Philipe Charlopin in Gevrey-Chambertin during the early 2000s…It is wines like these that make us remember why we love this business. Just when you think you’ve had the best a region has to offer, a new discovery comes along to rock your world. Boudignon is such a discovery, with wines that speak so clearly of their place of origin.” -Skurnik Wines

Thibaud Boudignon Rose de Loire, France 2023 750ml $26 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Notes “A noble, supremely saline rosé with an exquisitely delicate texture. Made like a white wine to preserve minerality and structure. The wine is full of bright flacors of wild raspberries, blood orange zest, and red currant, all in a refreshingly silky package.””A noble, supremely saline rosé with an exquisitely delicate texture. SPAIN

Lopez Heredia.

Lopez de Heredia’s wines follow the path started by Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Lopez almost 150 years ago, using only estate grown fruit, including the famous Tondonia vineyard, which produces many of the most coveted wines in all of Rioja. These bottles are as classic as they come, representative of the accumulated wisdom of many generations of Spanish and French wine masters. This Tondonia Reserva features an incredible 6 years of barrel aging before being clarified with egg whites to ensure the purity and longevity of the wines without filtration.

R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva, Rioja DOCa, Spain 2011 1.5L $119 special, 5 magnums available
James Suckling 95 Points “A traditional beauty that effuses iron, warm earth and savory tobacco leaves, together with plums, spices and orange zest. This is juicy and still tight, with firm but savory tannins. Medium-weight and quite zesty in texture, as is the case with the other López de Heredia reds tasted this session. Drink now or hold.”
Wine Advocate 94 Points “The 2011 Viña Tondonia Reserva is darker and shows riper fruit, a rounder palate and some dusty tannins. A year of ripeness, concentration and tannin, the wine is powerful with the finesse of Tondonia. Tasting this next to the textbook 2010 Tondonia revealed how this has more muscle and a wider back and the 2010 epitomizes the finesse and elegance.”

“For us vignerons, these are great years, because everything got ripe, Seventeen is very good. I’m super happy with that year. And ’18 is also good—maybe a little more showy young.” He compared them to 2009 and 2015 but noted those years were more tannic. ‘The 2009s are starting to drink well now, but who waits 10 years?’ ” –Stephane Robert, as reported by the Wine Advocate

In the Rhône Valley, where Domaines often trace their history for centuries, Stephane Robert’s winery is still spoken of like a newcomer despite having been around for 30 years. In 1994, Robert founded Domaine du Tunnel, starting with 2.5 hectares of vines on the right bank of the Rhône, in Cornas, Saint-Péray and Saint-Joseph. After several successful vintages, Stéphane rehabilitated an abandoned, underground train tunnel which became his winery and cellar.

Although very little of his wines reach our shores, savvy customers know to snap them up whenever available. They are a pure, but powerful representation of what the Rhône can offer.

Stephane Robert Domaine du Tunnel Cornas, Rhone, France 2018 750ml $69 special, 15 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 95-97 Points “Readers looking for the essence of Cornas would do well to pick up a case of the 2018 Cornas. Deep purple, with a heavenly bouquet of blueberries, raspberries, crushed violets, olives, ground pepper, and gamey meats, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a balanced, classy texture, building yet polished tannins, and a great finish. It’s a winner.”

Jeb Dunnuck 94-95 points
“There is a more pronounced mineral and delicately spiced character to the 2019 Barbaresco, with notes of wet asphalt and kirsch and vibrant purity. It has elegant concentration, with fine coiled tannins in its hints of tea leaves, bergamot, and ripe wild raspberry, and has a more pronounced structure. This is a fantastic expression. Drink 2024-2040.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 25 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“…quite potent. A rush of raspberry jam, wild flowers, white pepper and mint make a strong opening statement. Succulent and yet also structured, the Muncagota has so much to offer. It should be one of the first wines in this range to start opening up, although when that will happen exactly is hard to say.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “…Of these various wines, this is the most salty and savory. There is less primary fruit intensity here. The bouquet is laced with grilled rosemary and wild sage… The mouthfeel is characterized by dry tannins and very long, balsam-like persistence. Dried ginger and herbs appear on the menthol-like finish.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“Balsamic notes of juniper, eucalyptus and pine align with floral, cherry and black currant flavors in this supple, well-structured red. Balanced and long, with a lingering aftertaste of rose, cherry and mineral…”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94+ points “… Rich, deep and super-expressive, the 2016 hits all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice emerge, but only with great reluctance… [it] clearly needs time.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points
“…all power, tension and nerve. Even so, the 2013 is remarkably civilized and much less austere than young Ovello Barbarescos usually are. Scents of cranberry, white pepper and mint give the wine its signature high-toned aromatics. The Ovello has a Volnay-like purity to its fruit, with Nebbiolo tannins and structure, of course. If that sounds appealing, well, it is. Vivid, sculpted and impossibly beautiful, the Ovello is simply magnificent.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95+ points “…one of my favorite expressions overall. The Ovello vineyard site sees a greater presence of limestone in its soil composition, and this factor helps to develop the tannic structure and consistency of the wine…”

Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $85, that’s $80.75 at 5% off and $76.50 at 10% off, 29 bottles in stock now
Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 1.5L Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 6 magnums in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“…All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “…a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Pajè, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“…impressive on all fronts, but especially in terms of aromas. There’s so much brightness here with red and purple fruits, rust and a dark note of clove or exotic spice. No element is out of place, but together they help to build the intensity of this balanced wine. It shows a soft, velvety texture, and perhaps there is a little more ripeness overall in this warm vintage.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “… a fine choice for readers who enjoy wines of freshness, verve and energy. Dark fruit, menthol, spice, pine and crushed rocks are beautifully delineated. This is an especially chiseled wine in the range of 2017 Riservas. I very much like the balance of richness and vibrancy. In a word: classic.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2014 750ml Displayed Price: $66, that’s $62.70 at 5% off and $59.40 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“…a dark, sensual beauty. Deeply spiced and balsamic, with tremendous textural richness, the Pora is utterly beguiling. I can’t remember a Pora with this much depth, textural resonance and brooding intensity. The 2014 needs at least a few years to be at its best, but it is superb even in the early going. I won’t be surprised if the 2014 turns out to be better than this note suggests.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $75, that’s $71.25 at 5% off and $67.50 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“…a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fruit with a little more blackberry and plum compared to previous editions. The tannic strength of the wine is also more elaborate. Pora works very well in 2017.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Rabajà, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $85, that’s $80.75 at 5% off and $76.50 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now
Produttori del Barbaresco Rabajà, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 1.5L Displayed Price: $189, that’s $179.55 at 5% off and $170.10 at 10% off, 6 magnums in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96+ points
“…another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. That impressive track record includes this wine that delivers extreme focus, depth and integrity. The bouquet is very clear cut with dark cherry, tart plum, spice and blood orange, but it is also complex and fluid. It offers new perspectives with each swirl of the glass. From a hot vintage, the Rabajà is smooth, powerful and balanced. I would bet on long aging for this bottle.”

Highlights Arriving Friday:

Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 29 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“…a very pretty, silky wine that shows all the signatures of this site in its refined, mid-weight personality. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cedar, mint and tobacco all grace this classy Barbaresco. The 2019 is classic Asili, with firm tannins from the year.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $85, that’s $80.75 at 5% off and $76.50 at 10% off, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93+ points
“…one of the most searingly tannic wines in the range. Readers will have to be patient with the 2019, as it is going to need time. As always, Montefico is a Barbaresco built on linear intensity more than size. In 2019, the qualities are quite accented. Time in the glass opens the bouquet nicely, but the 2019 remains quite closed. “

Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles available
Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“…perhaps the most complete of the 2019 Riservas at this stage. It offers fine depth, plenty of tannin and nascent emerging inner sweetness to tie it all together. A wine of stature and textural depth, the Montestefano is my early favorite in this lineup.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles available
Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 5 magnums available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“…powerful, savory and intensely linear, in classico Ovello style, and yet it appears to have enough fruit behind its imposing tannins to develop well over the coming years. In this tasting, the Ovello feels pretty closed post bottling, but its inherent balance and qualities are there. Clean saline notes extend the finish in promising fashion.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“…a pretty tightly wound wine, certainly moreso than is typically the case for this Barbaresco, which is often much more engaging in the early going. Dried herbs, tobacco, cedar and earthiness lend notable savory nuance in this decidedly nervy, somber Pora. There’s good fruit intensity and plenty of character that makes me want to revisit this in a few months’ time.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Rabajà, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles available
Produttori del Barbaresco Rabajà, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 4 magnums available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“…redolent of dark fruit, crushed rocks, graphite, sage, menthol and lavender all race across the palate, supported by bracing, young Rabajà tannins that make themselves felt. This mid-weight, powerhouse Barbaresco packs quite a punch.”
The Gimonnet wines are pure, classical Blanc de Blancs Champagne. At their best, Gimonnet seems to have a quiet resonance, like a beautiful bell struck in a quiet stone hallway. They draw you in, not with bombast or noise, but with a clear directness and purity. Even the most basic of Gimonnet’s cuvees have such elements, and that pursuit of beauty and elegance makes them a perpetually top grower in Champagne.

The estate has been on a real roll over the last few years, keeping overall production unchanged but bottling a greater number of wines. The fractalization of their lineup has seemed to give each individual wine a greater identity and stronger personality, resulting in one of the most compelling sets of Blanc de Blancs in Champagne. Even the basic NV bottling has greater purity and poise than it used to—and it’s always been one of the best values in Champagne. It’s a can’t miss producer.

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Blanc de Blancs Cuis Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $54.50 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 92 points
“[Reviewed May 2024] Subtle aromas of citrus fruit, pear, lemon curd and chalk. Fresh and crisp on the medium-bodied palate, with mineral notes and fine bubbles. Clean and balanced with a lot of freshness and vibrancy. Delicate, creamy aftertaste. Drink now.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Cuvée Oenophile Non-Dosé Premier Cru, Champagne 2018 750ml $84.50 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2018 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Oenophile Non-Dosé is a blend from the Grand Crus of Cramant, Chouilly and Oger and then Cuis, which is a 1er Cru. The 2018 offers lovely complexity in the vintage’s relatively soft, understated style but displays good depth and creaminess that add balance. Citrus confit, spice, hazelnut and dried flowers all meld together effortlessly. The non-dosé style is not especially evident, as the wine’s balance is impeccable.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 93 points “For the extremely warm year this is remarkably fresh with very pure lemon blossom and white flower character. A thread of delicate chalky minerality runs through the focused palate, which the fine mousse accents beautifully. A cuvee of wines that are 45% from Cramant, 30% Chouilly, 22% Cuis and 3% Oger. Disgorged in February 2023. Drink or hold.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Oger Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $69 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“[Reviewed Nov 2023] The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Oger Grand Cru is laced with crushed rocks, chalk, white flowers, lemon peel and dried herbs. Intensely mineral and saline, this is a super-classic Gimonnet Champagne. Low dosage (5 grams per liter) adds to an impression of tension that gives the wine its overall shape.”

Nikolaihof is a giant of Austrian wine—a producer whose history and quality are unrivaled even in a country full of great producers. As Austria’s oldest operating winery, that history dates back to Roman times. Records first note winemaking occurring at the estate in 470, and the Saahs family has run the property for well over a century.

Much like how estates operated in previous centuries, Nikolaihof is farmed under polyculture, producing everything from honey to cut flowers in addition to wine. It was the first winery in the world to fully convert to farming biodynamically, having done so in the 1970s, a surprisingly easy task as no modern farming chemicals have touched the estate’s vines.

The wines are bright, precise and mineral-drenched with the power and density of the Wachau. The family produces wines of deep resonant flavors with a core of vinosity, especially from their top vineyards, Im Weingebirge (the first named vineyard in Europe), Vom Stein, and Steiner Hund. Across their holdings, vines average 47 years in age.

The estate maintains a sense of restlessness and invention about them while being strong tied to ancient practices, best described by importer Rare Wine Company as combining perfectionism with arch-traditionalism. Nothing is done hastily. Whether that’s using a centuries old wooden press, aging wines for years on the lees, or reimagining what wine from the Wachau can be through extended cask aging in their 700-year-old cellar, they incorporate very traditional techniques to give us a beautifully refracted image of Austrian wine.

To taste a wine from Nikolaihof is to taste the history of wine. These wines transcend vintages and varieties to offer a rare glimpse of time itself. These are the heights of Austrian wine from a producer that will outlive us all.

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“Bottled with 13% alcohol at the end of July 2019 but filtered in early 2017, the 2016 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a fascinatingly clear, fresh and coolish apricot aroma intermixed with morel/mushroom aromas and flinty notes of crushed stones. Full-bodied, round and fleshy on the palate, this is a generous and mouth-filling wine with rather delicate acidity and a slightly bitter, well-structured finish with lingering salinity and mineral freshness. Very promising. Tasted from lot 1420619 at the Nikolaihof in September 2019.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd, Wachau 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“Bottled in April this year, the 2017 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is fascinatingly deep and refined on the complex, fresh, elegant and remarkably complex nose with its crystalline stone notes. On the palate, the wine reveals great finesse and elegance combined with substance, grip and sustainability. It is a full-bodied, powerful, rich and almost sweet, concentrated and tensioned terroir wine that is still young and ready to go a long distance. 13% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Riesling Federspiel, Wachau 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points
“This youthful Wachau dry riesling is a complex swirl of flint, Amalfi-lemon, white-pear and wild-herb aromas. Sleek, cool and mineral palate with enormous energy, this is fascinating now, but has an even more exciting future ahead of it. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Late-Bottled Riesling Federspiel, Wachau 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 94 points
“If you ever wondered what a Wachau dry riesling tasted like a century or more ago, then here is the answer. Expansive nose of caramelized apple, dried peach and flint. For a medium-bodied dry white this is very delicate in flavor, but also intensely stony and flinty. A unique wine! Bottled in June 2022 after almost six years in large barrels of neutral oak. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Steiner Hund Riesling 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“Another stunning Steiner Hund dry riesling from Nikolaihof! Deep and complex nose with a ton of flint, but also crushed-rock, quince and pomelo aromas. For the very warm vintage this is astonishingly cool and restrained, with beautiful wet-stone minerality intertwined with the elegant acidity. Very long, silky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Steinriesler Riesling, Wachau 2007 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“Bottled in June 2019 after 12 years in a large oak vat, the 2007 Riesling Steinriesler is from the Vom Stein [vineyard] in Mautern and exhibits an intense and matured bouquet with caramel and leathery/feral as well as concentrated fruit but also crystalline, stony aromas. Deep, coolish and elegant. On the palate, this is a crystalline, refined and pure, very complex and concentrated wine with a great and complex finish that is structured, still tannic and seriously biting but with the right concentration and power for a long-distance run. It is mouth-watering, enormously tensioned and pushing on the finish. A great dry Riesling for real Riesling lovers. The wine should be decanted for maybe a day or two. 12% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Riesling vom Stein Smaragd, Wachau 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Bottled in April this year, the 2016 Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd is perfectly ripe and concentrated on the precise, coolish and flinty nose that reveals apricot and white peach aromas. Full-bodied, round and crystalline, this is a fresh, very elegant and textural Vom Stein in a linear and classic style. The finish is intense and reveals firm tannins and makes this an excellent gastronomic wine. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Riesling vom Stein Smaragd, Wachau 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Riesling vom Stein Smaragd, Wachau 2017 1.5L Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The Mautern 2017 Riesling Ried Vom Stein Smaragd offers a pure, refined and finely oxidative bouquet of bright, ripe fruits intermingled with smoky and saline terroir notes as well as some delicate oak. Round and intense on the palate, with fine, playful and persistently saline acidity, this is a full-bodied, dense and very elegant Riesling with striking intensity and finesse. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2022.”
James Suckling 94 points “A unique style of Wachau dry riesling! Very smoky nose, in fact it’s almost smoked bacon. Complex dried-herb character on the sleek but very structured palate. Impressive depth at the long finish, where notes of caramelized quince and crushed-stone minerality mingle. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Neuburger, Wachau 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2021 vintage. 2020 review provided for reference.
James Suckling 91 points “Although this Wachau neuburger is on the lighter side, the intense grapefruit and yellow-apple aromas leap out of the glass. More power and crisper acidity than is normal for the wines of this grape in this category. Good length. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Gelber Muskateller, Wachau 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off and $40.05 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 89 points
“This Austrian dry muscat has restrained aromas and is on the lean and tart side. Very straight and clean, but lacks a bit of the expressiveness we associate with this grape and producer. Might improve with a bit more bottle age. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Arriving in Mid-June from Nikolaihof:

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Vinothek Riesling, Wachau 2002 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 97 points
“A teasing, flinty whiff of reduction beckons from the glass before the taut, fresh, poised but juicy palate hits you. The flavor is reminiscent both of baked and fresh apple, with a smooth lanolin tone. This is not only and elixir but a whole fountain of youth, a full-flavored jewel of a wine. Still slender, still vivid and like balm for the soul. If only we could age so gracefully. “

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Vinothek Fass Severin Riesling, Wachau 1997 1.5L Displayed Price: $569, that’s $540.55 at 5% off and $512.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums available
James Suckling 98 points
“Welcome to the wine time machine! Although there are deep, mature aromas that range from an old library to quince paste and beeswax, after a little aeration some remarkably fresh citrus character emerges. Great concentration and restrained power on the wonderfully harmonious palate. Very long, bone-dry finish. Bottled in early 2022 after 25 years maturing in a large barrel of neutral oak. The barrel name, Fass Severin, is on the label. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96+ points “The 1997 Riesling Vinothek Severin Fass was aged for 25 years in a large, traditional oak cask (filtered, though not on the lees) and opens with an intense yet pure, fresh and spicy, finely oaky bouquet with a deep, mineral tone of crushed stones. On the palate, this is a very intense and complex Riesling slowly building up and revealing great finesse and balanced juiciness. The wine develops a sustainable, aromatic and structured finish with great finesse, lingering salinity and fine tannin grip. A fabulous, intense and elegant Riesling that is incredibly young in terms of freshness but ageless and immortal by its structure and fruit intensity. Natural cork.”

John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 94 points
“The 2018 Felsenberg GG is also absolutely outstanding this year. The bouquet is impressively expressive at this early stage, soaring from the glass in a blaze of pear, tart orange, a beautiful base of slate minerality, wild yeasts, a touch of fleur de sel and a potpourri of floral scents in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and seamless, with outstanding mid-palate depth, powerful mineral drive and great cut and grip on the long, perfectly balanced and youthful finish. This will be show stopping juice in the fullness of time. 2028-2070. 94.”

Weingut Donnhoff Krotenpfuhl Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2018 750ml Was $59, Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 93 points
“The 2018 Krötenpfuhl GG is absolutely superb this year. The wine is very pure on the both the nose and palate, with the bouquet delivering a lovely mix of pink grapefruit, tart orange, salty minerality, a touch of wild yeasts and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very well-balanced, with a lovely core, ripe, vibrant acids and great focus and grip on the long, nascently complex and very elegant finish. Superb juice. 2026-2060. 93.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2018 750ml Was $45, Displayed Price: $38, that’s $36.10 at 5% off and $34.20 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Decanter 95 points
“The 1.1ha vineyard of Brücke is a monopole of the estate. The vines are planted in loess loam soils over a slate bedrock, and its sheltered location down by the river is perfect for producing spätlese. The 2018 has a ripe green apple character on the nose, joined by notes of white flowers and a touch of honey. The palate is incredibly intense and limey, sweet yet elegant and balanced. It almost appears to be drier than the Leistenberg Kabinett at this early stage, such is its impeccable harmony, absorbing its 85g/l of residual sugar effortlessly. Snap this up when you can, but don’t touch it for a good six years or more. Barrel sample.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2018 750ml Was $69, Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2018 375ml Was $39, Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 17 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife’s edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Beerenauslese, Nahe 2015 375ml Was $138, Displayed Price: $125, that’s $118.75 at 5% off and $112.50 at 10% off, 9 half-bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 95 points
“The 2015 Hermannshöhle BA is still a baby and was in its primary stage of development, but this will clearly be a great wine as well. The bouquet offers up scents of baked apple, tangerine, a touch of papaya, gentle smokiness, orange oil and honey. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, bright and very, very deep, with great focus and grip, a very long, perfectly balanced and nascently complex finish. This will of course be approachable from the moment that it is released, but I would strongly suggest giving it at least four or five years in the cellar to allow it to start to really blossom and show some of the secondary layers of complexity that will come with bottle age. 2016-2075+.”
