Goodfellow – Newest (And Greatest?) Releases & Sale 5-30-24

Marcus Goodfellow is one of the most talented winemakers in Oregon, joined by the equally talented and knowledgeable Megan Joy. Their wines showcase their microscopic understanding of the potential in the terroirs of the Willamette Valley. Together, they craft wines that continually improve—both in the cellar and vintage to vintage. We love the wines for their coiled power and Burgundian structure, and we stack them enthusiastically & abundantly in our own personal cellars to adore for decades to come.
 
We’re excited to announce their latest releases: sparkling wines that reflect their admiration for precise and mineral grower Champagne. The three Goodfellow sparkling wines have been highly anticipated among our staff for years (after a friend shared their secret). According to Marcus, they created sparkling wines partly for the challenge, partly because their proclivities for low-alcohol-yielding sites, and partly because of their love of grower Champagne. Production began with the 2019 vintage, with grapes from select parcels within the Whistling Ridge, Temperance Hill, Durant, and Tsai vineyards. The wines are all multi-vintage with significant portions of reserve wines that aged on the lees for up to almost three years. These are terroir-driven works of art from two of the Valley’s finest winemakers.
 
Don’t miss the releases from Tsai Vineyard, a new-to-the-winery vineyard in the north-western part of the Yamhill-Carlton. Surrounded by forest and orchards, this vineyard was planted on volcanic soils, which is unusual for the AVA. It is dry farmed, LIVE certified, transitioning to organic, and is home to some of the oldest own-rooted vines in the Willamette Valley.
 
“Marcus Goodfellow is sourcing fruit from some of the finest vineyards in Willamette… dry farmed and from old vineyards planted to an array of clones. We visited the old, gnarled vines at Durant vineyard in Dundee Hills, planted with Pinot Noir in 1973 and with Chardonnay in 1993, and the Whistling Ridge Vineyard in Ribbon Ridge, planted in 1990. ‘Old vines are still the trump card,’ he says. ‘The vines situate themselves to the site. The old vines give wines that are ethereal, elegant, layered and don’t speak too loud.’ The wines combine layers of pure, ripe fruit, earth and amaro-like aromatics.” -Erin Brooks, writing for the Wine Advocate

Winery note “Comprised of 67% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Noir, from vintages 2019-2022. Elevage is a range of larger format French oak and Acacia puncheons. This is an early disgorgement, but the wine contains a significant percentage of reserve wines aged 30 months or longer on lees in puncheon. My favorite things about this wine are its refinement, layering, and integration. It is both light bodied and ethereal, but with excellent texture and suppleness. It moves through a range of aromatics, stony, citrusy, with touches of yeast esters, a bit of stoniness, it’s both brightly fresh and yet texturally mature. Light in the mouth at 12.2%, it covers mineral notes, mandarins, and pastry dough. The polished elegance and refinement is balanced by a lovely freshness in the acidity. The bottle disappears quite quickly.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Durant Vineyard Blanc de Blancs NV 750ml Displayed Price: $56, that’s $53.20 at 5% off and $50.40 at 10% off, 24 bottles available
Winery note “100% Chardonnay from volcanic clay soils. Durant is East facing, and the bulk of this wine is from older vines (1993) planted at the foot of the hill. Cool air pools in the block, keeping acids high and slowing sugar accumulation as the fruit ripens leading to an optimal situation for sparkling wine. Elevage is all in larger barrels from vintages 2019 and 2021 (55%/45%), tirage 4/2022. Aromatically, this wine jumps from the glass. Lemon curd, wheat fields, pastry dough, toasted hazelnuts, apple pie, and grilled bread. In the palate it is tranquil and smooth, staying with citrus notes and river stones. Lots of suppleness and movement, and a layer of density up from the Willamette Valley, that all flows down the palate into a lovely balanced finish. While this has two years in bottle on the lees, it also has significant amounts of reserve wines that spent more than 30 months on the lees in puncheon, so the development is exceptional for this age.”
Tech data “162 cases disgorged on 4/1/24, 100% Chardonnay, .5 g/l dosage, 2021/2019 base wines. Elevage was in 820L and 500L used oak barrels, 100% Durant fruit on volcanic soils. The lower planting of Chardonnay at Durant is at the foot of the hill and cool air sits down in the block cooling the vines and allowing them to hold acidity longer and slowing sugar accumulation. It allows us to pick ripe fruit at the correct acid and sugar levels for sparkling wines.”

Winery note “100% Chardonnay grown on sedimentary soils on top of Ribbon Ridge. Vintages 2019-2021. The original multi-clonal Chardonnay planting of Whistling Ridge together with the vines we top-grafted over to cuttings from Cameron’s Clos Electrique. More than 10 different known clones between them (including a section of the old Mt. Eden massale block brought to Oregon by John Paul of Cameron winery in the 80s.) Skins are thicker and the shallow soils offer intensely flavored fruit and high acidity, at low Brix. Aromatics are flinty in nature, seawater, oyster shells, stony, struck match and more oceanic qualities. In the mouth, more stones, kaffir lime curd, mandarin peel, steel, and star fruit. This is the densest of the wines, and perhaps the most youthful/energetic in the palate (we bottled two Blanc de Blancs cuvees from Whistling Ridge in the first round of tirage and the other will sleep in bottle a few more years). It’s bursting with flavor, and there is the signature youthful cut, astringency, and drive of Whistling Ridge. As much as this cuvee also has a big percentage of wine with more than 30 months on lees prior to going to bottle for two more years, there is a distinct feel of a punk rock attitude here. The wine is best consumed over as many hours as you can give it…just like every other Whistling Ridge wine.”

Shallow sedimentary soils, little topsoil moisture, and regular wind give Chardonnay from Whistling Ridge a very specific flavor profile and this wine has the saline, seaspray, and orchard fruit typical of the vineyard.“

Winery note “I love this wine…it’s my perfect combination of weightless, supple, and zingy. So refreshing…like fresh squeezed lemonade but add in bright aromas of pear and orchard fruit, along with a hint of pastry dough. The palate is bright, light-bodied, it wants to be snappy so badly but Pinot Blanc just has to be supple and textural…so. If Pinot Blanc were grown in Chablis this is what it would taste like. Perfect with simply prepared shellfish: oysters on the halfshell, scallops, crab, even lobster. 113 cases produced.”

Winery note “Lime peel, stone fruit, tangerine, rainier cherry, and river stones. Raised in an old 820L Acacia puncheon, this is textural and tranquil in the attack, then unfolds like a flower blossom in the palate with soft fruit and florals which give way to juicy, lingering acidity. Tasting this is entertaining, the original tranquility and supple texture suggests one direction, and then the explosion of nuance in the mid-palate reverses course, the acidity is soft and juicy but somehow sustains much longer than one would expect. This is one of my favorite versions of this wine. 11.1% abv and 86 cases produced.”

Winery note “Yellow apple, pear, lime flower and peel, almonds, hints of tarragon and pastry dough. In the mouth, it’s more yellow apples and pear, underripe nectarine, lime peel, and a distinct stoniness. Bottled a year early from our normal Chardonnay program, the impetus for this wine was to push for a pretty, nervy, and slightly less lees inflected wine for everyday enjoyment. 12.0% abv and 198 cases produced.”

Winery note “The 2021 Yamhill-Carlton Chardonnay is a puncheon from the Tsai Vineyard. The vines were planted in 2001, and the vineyard is on Jory soils, unusual in the Y-C AVA, and faces due south. The deeper soils match well with no till farming, and keeps the fruit balanced between ripening flavors without quick sugar accumulation leading to a very classic style of Chardonnay. It’s a native ferment, and the wine has an excellent length and weight. There is more minerality in the finish of the Y-C than the vineyard designate, but it is also a bit more rustic. I see this as a great match for white fish, like rockfish or sole, or flavorful chicken dishes.”

Bright golden-yellow, it’s flush with flint wet stones, vibrant citrus, and golden pineapple. Full-bodied, with a core of driving citrus and energetic acidity, it has a long and saline finish, with a weightless feel and elegant balance. It has a lovely, rounded edge to its acidity and does not come across as harsh. This is an outstanding and age-worthy wine to drink 2025-2035.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 94+ points “The 2021 Chardonnay Temperance Hill is intense, with a burst of flinty crushed stone, incense and savory herbs giving way to ginger-spiked yellow apples. This is round and soothing, showing its minerality up front, as a wave of ripe orchard fruits is complicated by a white pepper tinge. This was refined in 50% new oak, adding a lovely depth to the palate. Juicy acidity maintains balance as the 2021 leaves a tart lemon rind twang and hints of sour melon lingering throughout the lightly structured finale. While youthfully tense, time will unfurl the 2021 Temperance Hill’s depths of complexity.”
Winery note “The 2021 Temperance Hill shows aromatics of lemon oil and zest with mandarin, stone fruits, almond paste, white flowers and kaffir lime leaf. This wine marries the power and savory nature of Temperance Hill with the fruit intensity and cut of 2021. From Jancis Robinson: ‘Really edgy, precise ¬fruit. Crystalline. Exciting! Lightly smoky. Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “The medium golden 2021 Chardonnay Tsai Vineyard is ripe with forward aromatics of preserved Meyer lemon, toasted spice, pineapple rind, and gunflint. Medium-bodied and silky on the palate, it has great balanced energy as well as a long, clean finish, with notes of lemon custard on the back palate. Drink 2024-2030.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 91 points “The 2021 Chardonnay Tsai Vineyard opens in the glass with a delicate blend of white flowers, spice and crushed yellow apples. It’s softly textured with brisk acidity and a cascade of mineral-tinged orchard fruits. This finishes savory and long, leaving hints of sour melon and a lingering tactile mineral sensation. The Tsai Vineyard Chardonnay gains in volume and depth the longer it sits in the glass.”
Winery note “The 2021 Tsai Vineyard is yellow fruited, floral with pear, apple skin, cream, pie crust and a minty hint of bright herb. Medium full on the palate this has weight and richness to it, but ultimately has a nervier presentation through the back end, and finishes with a mouthwatering acidity.”

Winery note “The 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir shows aromatics of sweet dark strawberry, boysenberry and black cherry fruits. On the palate more dark black and red fruits, coffee, floral, and amaro notes, and an overlying savory, dark and wild spice and kitchen herb. Tannins are fine, but firm on the finish, and the palate is juicy and medium-light bodied . As with all of our Pinot Noirs, fermentations are 100% whole cluster, and relatively cool and slow, with native yeast in small 1.5 ton bins, and free run wine goes directly into barrel where it sits on the lees undisturbed for the duration of elevage. Cooperage is a mixture of new and used larger format (500L) puncheons, and neutral barriques.”

Eric Guido-Vinous 93+ points “The remarkably pretty 2021 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill slowly evolves in the glass, wafting up with a bouquet of dried strawberries, cedar, crushed stone, and dusty rose. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied weight and crisp red fruits cascading across a core of brisk acidity. Tactile mineral tones mingle with a gentle layer of fine tannins as the 2021 finishes a spicy citrus twang, long and staining yet still remarkably fresh. 100% whole cluster.”
Winery note “Temperance Hill Vineyard is located in the Eola Amity Hills and faces directly into the Van Duzer Corridor, where the break in Oregon’s Coast Range allows the cool winds from the Pacific into the Willamette Valley. Vines grow here in primarily medium depth volcanic soils, and the winds are a constant influence in the West facing blocks (West Field and Chardonnay). Pumphouse faces SE is the highest elevation fruit we work with. First established in the early 80s, it is a classic grand terroir of Oregon.”

Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “The 2021 Pinot Noir Pumphouse Block is sourced from the Temperance Hill Vineyard and pours a touch deeper ruby hue, with aromas of grenadine, violets, cinnamon, and forest herbs. Structured and medium-bodied, it has a gripping youthful texture, with loads of spice filling the palate and a bit of stemmy astringency throughout that will need time to potentially harmonize. It’s going to need time to see where this goes, but it has potential for sure. Drink 2025-2035. 118 cases were produced.”
Winery note “One to wait for, but absolutely worth it in the end. On first opening very tight, with tart red fruits and tannic structure on the palate that seems to overwhelm everything that came before. Then with a day or two open the wine blossoms: phenomenal texture and richness of weight, aromatics of lilac, five spice, cedar, cinnamon and rose petals, more cedar and cigar box, richer red fruits, wet stones…. hold for now, but the payout will be excellent. Drink 2027-2050.”

Eric Guido-Vinous 93 points “The 2021 Pinot Noir Whistling Ridge is spicy and savory in the glass, leading with a rich blend of steeped plums, cola and rose petals giving way to hints of clove. This is lifted and finessed with pretty red berries and suggestions of cocoa and inner florals, all guided by fresh acidity. The 2021 tapers off with medium length and a crunchy sensation, leaving just a tinge of fine tannin framing the experience beautifully. Of note, the Whistling Ridge took three hours to blossom, and it was worth the wait.”
Winery note “Whistling Ridge Vineyard is the reason that we make wine. Wild, with sedimentary soils that dry out quickly in the summer months. The vineyard is located right above Beaux Freres Estate, and next to the top of Patricia Greene, in the Ribbon Ridge AVA. Exposed on the ridge top, a strong wind blows in from the north and cools the vines every day in the late afternoon. In 2021 the only moisture of the summer pelted down right in the middle of bloom, rinsing off pollen and insuring a small set throughout the vineyard.”

Winery note “Deeper red hues and spice on the nose, black cherry, boysenberry, violets, cardamom, balsam, enveloping and textural with juicy, lovely acidity, firm tannins on opening that integrate over several days as the weight and texture of the wine fills in. Aromatically, the high point seems to really arrive after being open for about 48 hours, and the seamless interplay between fruit, baking spice, loamy earth, and hints of kitchen herbs is dramatic and superlative. In the zone the nose here is absolutely intoxicating.”
