Boulay 3 Day Sale! 5-26-24

We’ll get to Boulay, but first…..a few thoughts on Sancerre

It’s my belief that we’re witnessing a return to glory for the region of Sancerre. Not that the prestige ever quite went away, but wine drinking society certainly turned its back for a bit on what they perceived to be a region and a style that was almost too classic, too well understood. Part of the problem was that Sancerre experienced a major jump in production following the 90s and early 2000s that wasn’t always backed by top quality juice in the bottle. At its best, this region shows a wonderfully complex side of sauvignon blanc that no other place can. That steely lemon and grapefruit citrus, delicate white flowers, and subtle smoky aromas of gunflint. Where New Zealand SB is brash, bold, and obvious, Sancerre is tense and mysterious. And to me this difference is mirrored by the change that’s sweeping Western palates. Asian flavors are becoming a mainstay on the menus of many restaurants and preferences are shifting towards lighter, freshness focused dishes that showcase more vegetarian and vegan variations than ever before. The classic American diner food can still be found, but it’s playing second fiddle to the local Thai lunch spot.

Enter Boulay

What this means to the discerning wine drinker is that Sancerre may become more and more a part of your dining room experience, and the white you’re compelled to open. There are a whole host of new producers that are worth trying, but there are also the classic names that never stopped producing at the highest level. Gerard Boulay is one such name that stirs excitement in the tasting circle at a mere mention. The domaine which is located in Chavignol can trace its history back to 1380….yeah….that’s almost 700 years folks. Most of the vineyard lies on organically hand-farmed Kimmeridgian (terre blanche) soils which mimick the terroir of Chablis and bring immense freshness to the wine. Production is also classic, with wines fermented with natural yeast (huge for complexity) and aged in a mix of Foudres and used 300L barrels. Gerard is a patient and enigmatic figure that sees his obligation to the vines as one where he does not interfere, but rather allows the land and mother nature to express itself in a precise and crystalline form of Sancerre.

I’ve tasted Boulay side by side with some of the absolute best Sauvignon Blanc out there. Below is a photo from a recent SB focused tasting I did with some friends and family. While there were certainly stunning wines all over the flight, few had quite the unique combination of energy and finesse that the Boulay delivered. I was extremely impressed. Luckily for you we’ve got Boulay’s wines on sale now so that you can recreate your own experience. Inevitably though, you’re going to want a half case or more of this stuff as the weather and your palate demands it.

Available Bottlings of Boulay:

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Clos de Beaujeu 2022 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available
Importer Note “One of Chavignol’s most historic vineyards, Boulay’s parcel lies within the original Clos of the vineyard, established by the monks of Beaujeu in the Middle Ages. The walls of the Clos are no longer standing as they were originally built from clay and hay, and did not withstand the test of time. Boulay farms a 0.75 hectares plot of 30- to 60-year old vins where the soils are pebbly, lime-rich and strewn with fossils. Along with the 60% gradient for much of the vineyard, the rocky soils make this parcel very difficult to farm. Clos de Beaujeu is the source of some of Boulay’s deepest, most structured wines and savory, spicy examples of Chavignol that are built to last.”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Mont Damnes 2022 750ml $59 special, 22 bottles available
Gerard Boulay Sancerre Mont Damnes 2022 1.5L $119 special, 3 bottles available

Importer Note “Boulay began farming the steeply sloped Mont Damnés vineyard in 1982. His plot has an average vine age of 45 years. Mont Damnés’ reflective soils and south-facing exposition make it one of Chavi¬gnol’s warmest sites. Overall, Gerard Boulay’s “terre blanche” vineyards produce some of the most distinctive and soil-inflected Sauvignon Blancs in the Loire, with a delineation and minerality often reminiscent of a top Chablis. Boulay is certainly among the top examples of the appellation, including Boulay’s neighbors (Cotat Bros., Vatan). These are gorgeous, highly complex wines that are a clear step above “regular” Sancerre, and can age easily for 10-20 years or more. In fact, we have had them all the way back to the 1959 which was magnificent! They confirm Boulay’s place in the top ranks of Loire Valley vignerons.”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre La Cote 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 24 bottles available
Gerard Boulay Sancerre La Cote 2022 1.5L $64.50 special, 3 bottles available

Importer Note “Boulay’s parcel in “La Grande Côte,” which is partially owned and partically rented, is one of three designated Crus of Chavignol and is reputed for producing wines of incredible precision. Vintage 2010 was the inaugural release. Overall, Gerard Boulay’s “terre blanche” vineyards produce some of the most distinctive and soil-inflected Sauvignon Blancs in the Loire, with a delineation and minerality often reminiscent of a top Chablis. Gerard Boulay Sancerre Comtesse 2022 750ml $74.50 special, 21 bottles available
Gerard Boulay Sancerre Comtesse 2022 1.5L $149 special, 3 bottles available

Importer Note “From 50-75-year-old vines located in the sweet spot of the Mont Damnés vineyard (bottom of the slope, near Clos La Neore of Vatan), this is often the most powerful wine from Boulay’s lineup. Vintage 2005 was the inaugural release.”

Despite being one of the smallest growing regions in Germany, the Nahe is one of the most compelling. Combining the heft of the Rheingau with the elegance and minerality of the Mosel, the region offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. That’s a lot of faith we hoist on the shoulders of this family, but anyone who knows the wines knows that it is well deserved.

Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers, and one we stock by the pallet-load. They excel with both dry and off-dry wines, producing some of the highest rated and most enthusiastically praised Rieslings in nearly every vintage. Their privileged location in the Nahe, includes some of the finest and most geologically diverse vineyards in all of Germany. All this is backed by a father and son duo who will stop at nothing to produce the best wines in Germany.

Long-time favorites of our staff, even the entry-level wines are nothing to shrug at, offering unrivalled complexity in the under $25 range. From there, they produce dozens of options from their vineyards, from bone dry to nobly sweet, ethereal to luscious, and austere to hedonistic. The dry options top out at the GG, short for Grosses Gewächs, which is a powerful wine from one of Germany’s Grand Cru vineyards.

These are wines for any occasion, at prices that still suggest the producer inhabits that weird status of insider secret despite receiving heaps of praise (and massive scores) for over a decade. We just laugh, shake our heads, and share these with you on our three-day sale.

Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2018 750ml Was $69, Displayed Price: $56, that’s $53.20 at 5% off and $50.40 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 94 points
“The 2018 Felsenberg GG is also absolutely outstanding this year. The bouquet is impressively expressive at this early stage, soaring from the glass in a blaze of pear, tart orange, a beautiful base of slate minerality, wild yeasts, a touch of fleur de sel and a potpourri of floral scents in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and seamless, with outstanding mid-palate depth, powerful mineral drive and great cut and grip on the long, perfectly balanced and youthful finish. This will be show stopping juice in the fullness of time. 2028-2070. 94.”

Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2021 750ml Was $79, Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Dönnhoff’s 2021 Felsenberg GG is pure, bright and flinty on the deep, intense and iodine nose that also reveals phenolic complexity. Full-bodied but refined and elegant on the plate, this is a balanced and light-footed, rich and dense Felsenberg with juicy fruit and crystalline acidity, whereas the tannins step back compared to the Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg. The finish is rich yet refined and saline, with delicate lemon bitters and lush fruit. Although the 2021 is already charming, the wine needs some years on the bottle to show all its complexity and finesse without its youthful charm. This is not an austere wine that needs to soften its edges; it’s already dangerously good or even too good to cause patience. But the wine will reward those who can wait. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $95, that’s $90.25 at 5% off and $85.50 at 10% off, 30 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points
“What an exquisite stone fruit nose this super-fine and filigree dry riesling has! Yes, it is also very concentrated, but this and the power are completely underplayed. The result is an almost weightless palate that hangs like a white cloud in the still air. Extraordinary purity and precision at the almost endless finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 32 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points
“Ripe and concentrated, but also quite austere with stacks of spice and grapefruit character; everything from the juice to the pith and zest! A seriously dry riesling, but with moderate acidity. Long crushed rock finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $228, that’s $216.60 at 5% off and $205.20 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 99 points
“The restrained beauty of the peachiness in the nose is hard to describe, but easy to be overwhelmed by! On the compact palate this has staggering concentration yet still manages to be very light on its feet. The finish is blade-runner sharp, but the blade also flashes in the sun. Breathtaking drive and energy for the very warm and dry vintage. Then comes the remarkable wet-stone minerality and you can’t wait for the next sip. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Krotenpfuhl Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2018 750ml Was $59, Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 93 points
“The 2018 Krötenpfuhl GG is absolutely superb this year. The wine is very pure on the both the nose and palate, with the bouquet delivering a lovely mix of pink grapefruit, tart orange, salty minerality, a touch of wild yeasts and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very well-balanced, with a lovely core, ripe, vibrant acids and great focus and grip on the long, nascently complex and very elegant finish. Superb juice. 2026-2060. 93.”

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 27 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 92 points
“There is a whiff of pine that is followed by juicy nectarine and macerated apricot notes in this lush spätlese. It’s balanced and very expressive, with prominent acidity that flows authoritatively, but it is well merged with the rest of the elements. — Aleks Zecevic”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2018 750ml Was $45, Displayed Price: $38, that’s $36.10 at 5% off and $34.20 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Decanter 95 points
“The 1.1ha vineyard of Brücke is a monopole of the estate. The vines are planted in loess loam soils over a slate bedrock, and its sheltered location down by the river is perfect for producing spätlese. The 2018 has a ripe green apple character on the nose, joined by notes of white flowers and a touch of honey. The palate is incredibly intense and limey, sweet yet elegant and balanced. It almost appears to be drier than the Leistenberg Kabinett at this early stage, such is its impeccable harmony, absorbing its 85g/l of residual sugar effortlessly. Snap this up when you can, but don’t touch it for a good six years or more. Barrel sample.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points
“Wonderful white-peach, mandarin and orange-blossom nose that also has something dark and “earthy” behind all the charm. So much depth and energy that it makes your bones rattle! Staggering intensity at the vibrant, lemony finish. The grape sweetness is there, but way in the background. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Pure, precise and bright on the nose, with delicately flinty and spicy aromas, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is a fabulously piquant and stimulating Spätlese with mineral intensity, complexity, grip and tension, as if there were electric wires in this wine. It’s enormously vital and stimulating. 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2018 750ml Was $69, Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2018 375ml Was $39, Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 17 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife’s edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2020 750ml Was $99, Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2020 375ml Was $49, Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 24 half-bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points
“Such an exotic nose with a slew of passion fruit, mangosteen and King Alfonso mango. Compact and concentrated, but the more important things are the coolness and gracefulness of this moderately sweet Auslese that turns in a dark, “earthy” direction at the powerful finish. Very limited production. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2021 750ml Was $99, Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“Picked the same day as the GG and the Spätlese on November 8 but with finely shriveled botrytis berries, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese offers a clear and finely lemony bouquet with very fine botrytis tones, even though botrytis was less widely spread here than in the Felsenberg. On the palate, this is a rich and intense yet very precise and filigreed, refined and pure Auslese with an enormously saline and lively, long and energetic finish that shows piquant acidity. Superb. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Beerenauslese, Nahe 2015 375ml Was $138, Displayed Price: $125, that’s $118.75 at 5% off and $112.50 at 10% off, 9 half-bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 95 points
“The 2015 Hermannshöhle BA is still a baby and was in its primary stage of development, but this will clearly be a great wine as well. The bouquet offers up scents of baked apple, tangerine, a touch of papaya, gentle smokiness, orange oil and honey. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, bright and very, very deep, with great focus and grip, a very long, perfectly balanced and nascently complex finish. This will of course be approachable from the moment that it is released, but I would strongly suggest giving it at least four or five years in the cellar to allow it to start to really blossom and show some of the secondary layers of complexity that will come with bottle age. 2016-2075+.”

SPAIN

Alberto Nanclares y Prieto.

Some of the world’s greatest investments are happy accidents… just ask winery owner Alberto Nanclares. An economist who loved the sea, he moved with his wife to Castrelo, a small town near Spain’s Atlantic Coast, and began to take an interest in the Albarino vines planted on his new property. Interest turned to love which turned to obsession and in 1997 he decided to found his own winery.

While he began as a garagiste, his production expanded over time and he eventually hired his friend Silvia Prieto, a technician and enologist as a consultant, but she soon became an equal partner in the operation. The duo has become a phenomenon in the Spanish wine world, producing high quality Albarinos with the capability of aging beautifully for years. The essence of their approach is reverence for the vineyards, which includes a commitment to organic farming and native yeast fermentation.

Dandelion is an Albarino from a collection of top plots throughout Rias Baixes. The waves of flavor hit in waves: stony, salty, citrusy, tangy. The result is a true meal for the senses. This is top notch stuff.

Nanclares y Prieto ‘Dandelion’ Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain 2022 750ml $28 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 91 Points “The 2022 Dandelión shows mellow, round and polished, with integrated acidity, a classical profile and varietal notes. It’s vibrant and fresh, with the classical salty twist in the finish.”

That’s not all! We have more wines from Nanclares y Prieto to peruse on our webstore including their beauitiful and wholly unique Crisopa Orange wine and their only red wine.
We love these wines. And judging from the response to these newsletters, you do too! What Los Bermejos did for Natural sparkling wines in Spain, Envinate did for Spanish still wines… among other revolutionary producers like Comando G and Nanclares y Prieto, they have brought natural wine to the highest echelons of quality.

As our resident Envinate evangelist raves:

“Back in 2019 when I first tasted the wines of Envinate I was impressed but cautious with my enthusiasm. I told myself that these spicy, exotic red and white wines from the Canary Islands and smaller appellations in Spain would be a temporary moment in the zeitgeist of wine trends. A blip on the timeline for new wave wines coming out of Spain. I was wrong. These wines have continued to improve vintage after vintage and now represent the revolutionizing wine movement in Spain as its foremost exciting producer. The 2022 releases are profound with incredibly elegant acidity, smoky red & white fruits, and unbeatable food pairability.”

Enjoy these new bottlings of Envinate!

Envinate ‘Taganan’ Parcela Margalagua, Canary Islands, Spain 2022 750ml $89 special, 5 bottles available
Wine Advocate 98 Points “There’s a little more ripeness in the 2022 Táganan Parcela Margalagua, a jump in complexity and depth from the regular Táganan. It has fruit, elegance and a medium body with very fine tannins. It’s very harmonious and with an ethereal quality to it. It has a combination of dry flowers, crushed rocks, herbs and always a marine whiff that makes it quite distinct. It’s a very regular vineyard, but this is now a certified single-vineyard wine from the new Islas Canarias. – Tenerife appellation.”

Envinate ‘Palo Blanco’ Las Molinas, Canary Islands, Spain 2022 750ml $89 special, 10 bottles available
Wine Advocate 98+ Points “The 2022 Palo Blanco Las Molinas is a new white from Los Realejos, a large plot of some 1.2 hectares of vines … It’s fresh, floral and expressive with just a spicy twist. It has a vibrant palate and a long, tasty, almost salty finish. There is a plus of complexity and finesse here.”

Envinate ‘Lousas’ Parcela Seoane, Galicia, Spain 2022 750ml $99 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96-97 Points “This is a specific plot in the village of Doade with gneiss and quartz. It has the expressive nose of the zone, serious and mineral, but with a perfumed nose too, with a note of blood orange and the faint volatility that lifts up the nose. There’s a lot of energy here; it excels in 2022. It comes from very old vines planted in the 1930s.”

Envinate ‘Lousas’ Parcela Rosende, Galicia, Spain 2022 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available

Envinate Lousas ‘Doad,’ Galicia, Spain 2022 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-95 Points “The 2022 Doad Lousas is the second vintage of the village red. It comes from gneiss and schist soils from the traditional zone of the Sil and is warmer and riper, a textbook example of ripe Mencía fruit, an earlier zone with juicy wines.”
FRANCE

The Lafon Family.

“There are few growers anywhere in the world more committed to improving his vineyards with the aim of making ever better wine than Dominique Lafon. He tirelessly questions his and others’ methods, always looking to improve.” —Daniel Johnnes, Sommelier and writer.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon has a history of excellence dating back to 1865. Dominique Lafon took over in 1985. Dominique also began his own winery separate from the family’s other holdings in 2008.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Lafon family and their wines, well… you had better get working on that because you are missing out on one of Burgundy’s great visionaries and most scrupulous farmers.

Dominique Lafon Bourgogne Blanc, Burgundy, France 2021 750ml $44.50 special, 13 bottles available
Vinopolnote “A fantastic entry point for newcomers or an old standby for Fans de Lafon. This is a field blend of vines from Dominique’s Meursault “Les Grandes Coutures” and Puligny-Montrachet “Les Femelottes” lieu-dits. With an average vine age of 20-50 years, this is a wonderfully complex wine for a fantastic price.”

Dominique Lafon Volnay, Cote de Beaune, France 2021 750ml $95 special, 4 bottles available
Vinopolnote “A cool weather expression from the village-level lieu-dit of ‘Les Lurets.’ “

Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu, Volnay Premier Cru, France 2020 $219 special, 8 bottles available
Vinous 92-94 “The 2020 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru is very well defined on the nose with blackberry, boysenberry, crushed violets and light incense aromas, opulent yet controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with some oak to be subsumed on the entry, modest depth, sleek and sensual with a spicer finish than the Champans. Likewise, it will require 4-6 years in bottle before it is at full flight.”

(Not Reviewed yet, 2020 review provided for reference)
Vinous 90 Points Josh Raynolds “Translucent orange-pink. Lively and sharply focused on the nose, presenting ripe red berry and floral scents and a hint of botanical herbs. Smooth and broad on the palate, offering bitter cherry, red currant and candied rose flavors that firm up and become spicier with air. Closes long and silky, with resonating floral and spice notes and strong cling.”

Reverdy Sancerre Rose Terre de Maimbray 2023 750ml $24 special, 36 bottles available

St Damien Gigondas Rose 2023 750ml $26 special, 12 bottles available
Winemaker Notes “Organically farmed. From the lieu dit “La Moutte” this tiny production rosé is from mostly 45 year old Cinsault planted in 1970, and 10-15 year old Mourvèdre and Syrah. Cold maceration for 6 hours in the press and slow pneumatic pressing. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks with occasional lees stirring. Rose petal, honeydew melon, lychee, pineapple and garrigue. Surprisingly rich mouth feel. Hint of pepper and crushed rock on the finish.”
Ok Vietti, I have an honest question… how do you do it?

Vietti is simply one of the top producers in all of Piedmont if not all of Italy. Like 2019, 2020 is already proving to be an absolutely incredible vintage, with Barolos that display classic pedigree and endless ageability.

Perhaps the key to Vietti’s success has been their mastery over both modern and traditional approaches in winemaking. Rather than rest on the assumption that the old ways are best, or be seduced by the notion that new is always better, Vietti has chosen its own path. The wines are given traditional extended maceration in the winery to extract plentiful tannin and complex aroma from the Nebbiolo grape skins before they’re matured in a combination of both barrique and large oak vessels. The approach is never heavy handed but always done to achieve the perfect balance between finesse, aromatic intensity, and ample structure.

There isn’t a single bottle of Vietti that I’ve opened which hasn’t been a pleasure to drink. And trust me, the bottle doesn’t last long once it’s opened.

Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $219 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “Harmonious and seductive with endless counts of aromas in good depth. Strawberries, crushed raspberries, fresh lavender, tile, mineral and mild spices. Medium to full body with chalky, powerful tannins. Bright and tense at the center with extensive development with sour cherries, mineral, white pepper and grapefruit. The lengthy finish is focused, precise and taut.”

Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $219 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 94 Points “Racy and focused. I like the aromas of lavender, violet and white roses alongside strawberry, cranberry and stone. Medium body, with firm and fine tannins that are long and succulent. It’s fine and polished.”

Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $219 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “There is a little more savoriness here, showing contained power. Tar and dark minerality. Plenty of forest berries, dried orange peel, frozen grapefruit and raspberries. Very structured and full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins rendering the bold austere quality to the wine. But at the end, this is focused and taut, with a crunchy, spicy finish full of length.”

Vietti Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $219 special, 9 bottles available
James Suckling 99 Points “One of the palest and most perfumed Barolos from Vietti with a transparent, ruby-orange hue. This is a super nuanced, elegant, expressive and ethereal Monvigliero that grows on me, with enchanting notes of grilled grapefruit, thyme, frozen raspberries and mineral. A subtle splash of white pepper and mezcal-like smokiness … a big wow that deserves attention. Vegan. Best with a Burgundy glass. Can drink now or from 2027.”

Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $219 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “Perfumed, composed and agile with notes of cherries, wild strawberries, white pepper, frozen raspberries, dried flowers and some stones. Full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins and crisp acidity. Bright and vertical with controlled power throughout. Textural and subtle. Great tension and energy on the mid-palate and onto the long, focused finish.”

Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $219 special, 9 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 Points “The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here.”

Walk the moonscape of the Spanish island of Lanzarote, and you would never suspect the volcanic ash could support life of any kind. But grapevines, and in particular high-quality wine grapes, thrive in marginal conditions.

The few growers that remained on the island after volcanic eruptions in the 18th century carved hollows into the ash to help direct rain and dew towards the roots. The vines see half the average rainfall of typical wine regions. The ash provides unique protective properties, as it prevents phylloxera from taking hold. Grafting is unnecessary under traditional methods.

Ignacio Valdera founded Bodegas Los Bermejos in 2001. It quickly attained international acclaim for its expressive wines. Today, Daniel Martín is the head winemaker, as well as a grapegrower himself. He returned to his home region of Lanzarote after working for the iconic Vega Sicilia. The winery’s estate vineyard grows around 10% of the winery’s production; the rest is purchased from a network some 300 growers that practice sustainable methods.

Los Bermejos works with several grape varieties that are indigenous or unique to the island. Malvasía Volcánica, an indigenous white grape, is the most commonly planted variety overall on the island despite producing tiny yields. It was a spontaneous cross of Malvasía Aromatica and the indigenous Marmajuelo. Los Bermejos also works with the rare Diego grape variety, also known as Vijariego Blanco. This variety was wiped out on the mainland of Spain by phylloxera. According to the winery, it creates a dry wine with high acidity, is highly aromatic, and ages well. Of reds, Listán Negro is the most commonly planted and is used for rosés and reds. Though it can struggle to produce consistent yields, the wines are balanced and aromatic with gentle tannins and spice notes.

Importer note
“After a string of hard years of extreme drought for Bermejos, 2023 has turned out to be an incredible vintage for the Lanzarote pioneering winery and its marquee wine. It was an early harvest again due to the heat, but the crop was plentiful and the grapes balanced. The wine was directly pressed, with no maceration, and the wine has its classic pale color, with marked aromas of pomegranate, strawberries, and subtle flavors with refreshing acidity.”
No reviews for the 2023 vintage. Recent review provided for reference.
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92 points “Shimmering orange-pink. An expressive and complex bouquet displays an array of mineral-accented red berry and citrus fruit qualities, along with suave floral and spice topnotes. Nicely concentrated and taut, offering fresh strawberry and blood orange flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. The mineral note drives an impressively long, nervy finish that echoes the berry and floral notes.”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92 points “Ruby-red. Potent, mineral-accented cherry and cassis scents are complicated by suave floral and candied licorice nuances. The sappy, penetrating, smoky palate offers bitter cherry and dark berry flavors that spread out slowly on the back half. Concentrated yet lithe, with outstanding finishing power and silky, harmonious tannins adding shape and grip.”

Guy Charlemagne: Our Guy In Champagne

Situated in Mesnil-sur-Oger in the heart of Côte des Blancs is the grower Champagne house of Guy Charlemagne. This producer is special, turning out artisanal, traditionally structured and refined Champagnes using ancient vines grown in some of the most sought-after terroir in the world.

The Charlemagne family has been making wine in Mesnil-sur-Oger since 1892, five generations bringing new breath to their land, while continuing the tradition of producing world class Champagne. Per Peter Liem, this is a grower to hunt for, especially their top bottling, Mesnillésime, which is “a vintage-dated blanc de blancs from Charlemagne’s oldest vines in Le Mesnil: like all of his wines, it’s brisk and racy, although it has a layered depth of fruit and a prominent chalkiness to counter its high acidity.” This cuvee is made from 100% Chardonnay hand-harvested from sixty-year-old vines grown in the chalky, limestone soil of Mesnil-sur-Oger. Champagne expert and author Richard Juhlin writes that the “Mesnillésime is a wine for every serious collector,” and goes on to note that Guy Charlemagne “is a grower to watch with the greatest respect in the future.”

If you’re familiar with the producer, you’re probably aware of how difficult their wines are to find. We’re lucky to have a strong connection with a local importer that simply adores the Champagne estate as much as we do. We have just a smidge left of the 2014 vintage, a charming year just entering its prime drinking window, per Anne Krebiehl MW, of Vinous, whose recent review underscores its food-friendly and delicious nature.

Guy Charlemagne Mesnillésime Vieilles Vignes Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2014 750ml Was $119, Now $99 special, 25 bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 93 points
“The 2014 Extra Brut Mesnillésime Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from on average 60-year-old vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, vinified in oak with blocked malolactic fermentation. Notes of dried corn husk and salty maize meal on the nose take turns with yellow apple on the nose. The oak is apparent in savoriness rather than vanilla and a certain roundness on the body, beautifully handled. The mousse is still bright and sprightly, highlighting saltiness and fresh apple equally. This has an assertive personality, and comes across as a muscular, toned blanc de blancs, bracing at first, then relaxing into a warm smile. The umami finish can absolutely take on food.”
Winery note “A Grand Champagne with character from the Côte des Blancs terroir, specifically from Le Mesnil sur Oger (limestone parcels averaging 60 years of age). This champagne produced from first press of Le Mesnil sur Oger Grand Cru juices, highlights the exact characteristic of our village. Jewel of the Charlemagne house, this vintage wine combines both authenticity and the search for perfect quality. Elegantly presented with exceptional labelling, this Mesnillesime cuvee is produced with rigorous vinification, partially in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, and a very light dosage of 4 grams per liter. Matured for 6 years in our chalk underground cellars, this cuvee highlights the excellence of our production. Chardonnay, the only grape here, shows what balance, harmony and purity can mean. A rare champagne for unforgettable moments. Pale yellow with green hues. Persistent mousse with very fine bubbles. Powerful yet elegant nose dominated by acacia honey eventually shows notes of candied lemon, smoke and a blend of pepper. Unctuous, lightly oaked and complex on the palate, candied fruit and citrus aromas pave the way to a fresh, vanilla finish.”

Your Guide to Goodfellow Family Cellars

Closeout Roses from Commanderie de Peyrassol

Arriving Friday

Vincent Paris.

The wines of Vincent Paris are often described as bold, but what does it mean to be bold? For the soft-spoken Vincent, one of the Rhône’s fastest rising stars, he would prefer to let his stunningly focused and evocative wines do the talking. And they are wines that beg to be noticed.

Vincent prunes his branches to just 4 bunches of grapes per vine (versus a typical five to seven bunches) which encourages a dense and powerful concentration in the fruit, but these are not heavy-handed. Quite the opposite, these are wines with a lift and freshness that complements the bolder aspects of the wine’s expression without tamping down its largesse. We really don’t know how he does it, how his wines walk the tightrope the way they do… maybe it’s the slow and low cold fermentations he utilizes? He maintains a forested wilderness outside of the arable zones of his properties to ensure balance in the ecosystem… is this grounds his wines and keeps them from the edge?

Today we are proud to welcome three of his most accomplished wines to our shelves. First up are his Granit 30 bottling, a bright and approachable Syrah that wouldn’t be out of place in a new world line-up and Granit 60, a rich Rhone wine with massive minerality. Finally, “La Geynale” is a truly special piece of Cornas history… made up of 80% (and by old we mean olde, these vines were planted in 1910) old vine Genale Vineyard fruit from the Cornas Amphitheater.

These wines are making a lot of noise… don’t miss out!

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30, Rhone, France 2022 750ml $44.50 special, 24 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “So expressive and so precise, this is a great modern Cornas. Haunting nose of black forest berries with notes of dry forest floor and wild herbs. Then comes the wonderful combination of restrained richness and youthful freshness on the vertical, medium-bodied palate. And just as the coolness of evening follows the heat of the day, the mineral vibrancy of the finish follows the succulence of the mid-palate. Drink or hold.”

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 60, Rhone, France 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “A well-composed, velvety and vivid Cornas with brightness and purity. Aromas of dark cherries, currants, wild herbs, graphite and black pepper. Medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Good concentration with precise fruit and a constant mineral edge. The peppercorn and stone character brings freshness and verve to the energetic mid-palate. It’s vibrant and vertical with a lot of tension in the long, textured and spicy finish. Try after 2027.”

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas La Geynale, Rhone, France 2022 750ml $89 special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 98 Points “Very complex nose of smoke and forest berry fruit with a touch of grilled meat. Extremely dense with enormous fine tannins, but still so bright and energetic. Major concentration at the extremely long, velvety finish, where you feel the wildness that’s the signature of this appellation. From a single parcel of 50-year-old vines. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.”

These are the lowest listed prices on the West Coast for these wines!

Coquina Wines.

Formerly making wine for buzzy estates like Kosta Browne and Realm Cellars, winemakers Dana Benn and Nicole Staples came to the Willamette Valley to make something of their own. Their wines have a fine, nervy quality to them, and a style that is far more restrained and Old World than their California winemaking roots might suggest. Coquina is exactly the kind of unique, forward thinking project we like to see from young winemakers and at these.

Coquina Wines Pinot Gris Willamette Valley 2022 750ml $18 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Note “A Lucious white wine with notes of vibrant stone fruits and citrus blossoms. The body is layered and the finish is clean. It is enjoyable on its own or paired with aged cheeses, salty snacks, or bright seafood dishes.”

Coquina Wines Trousseau Eola-Amity Hills 2022 750ml $21.90 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Note “Welcome our first red wine! Drinks light and fruity, with playful texture and a dry finish. We suggest chilling it for a nice refreshing quality. Cheers!”

“Goodfellow,” Great wines:

Goodfellow Family Cellars.

“Marcus Goodfellow makes some of the most elegant and precise New World Pinot Noirs that I know of… An Oregon native, Goodfellow cut his winemaking teeth with Russ Raney at Evesham Wood in the early 2000s, and also counts Cristom’s Steve Doerner as an early inspiration… The Pinots (and Chardonnays) are distinctly taut and precise, and they rarely hit above 13.5% alcohol. I cannot recommend them highly enough to readers who prize this style.” -Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media

Marcus Goodfellow is one of the most talented winemakers in Oregon, joined by the equally talented and knowledgeable Megan Joy. The wines reflect the minds of this incredible pair, showing microscopic understanding of the potential in the terroirs of the Willamette Valley.

These are profound wines, both white and red, that are made in a style that’s distinctly savory—no fruit bombs here. Together, Marcus and Megan craft wines that continually improve—both in the cellar and vintage to vintage. We love the wines for their coiled power and Burgundian structure, and we stack them enthusiastically & abundantly in our own personal cellars to adore for decades to come.

These are the only listings for these wines in the USA today:

STAFF PICK  Goodfellow Family Cellars “Vin Soif” Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $24 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery note
“Yellow apple, pear, lime flower and peel, almonds, hints of tarragon and pastry dough. In the mouth, it’s more yellow apples and pear, underripe nectarine, lime peel, and a distinct stoniness. Bottled a year early from our normal Chardonnay program, the impetus for this wine was to push for a pretty, nervy, and slightly less lees inflected wine for everyday enjoyment.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay, Yamhill-Carlton 2021 750ml $28 special, 12 bottles available
Winery note
“The 2021 Yamhill-Carlton Chardonnay is a puncheon from the Tsai Vineyard. The vines were planted in 2001, and the vineyard is on Jory soils, unusual in the Y-C AVA, and faces due south. The deeper soils match well with no till farming, and keeps the fruit balanced between ripening flavors without quick sugar accumulation leading to a very classic style of Chardonnay.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Fir Crest Vineyard Block Eleven Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton 2021 750ml $54.50 special, 7 bottles available
Winery Notes “My first thought was black strawberry, but those don’t exist. Think of black cherry or black raspberry and then apply the idea to strawberries and it will give you an idea of the Block Eleven. Layer on spiced plums, dark forest berries, and kitchen spices. The palate is dark and structured. Pretty red and black fruit, slightly velvety turning to structural tannins and a bright, long finish.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Heritage No. 17, Durant Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml $69 special, 13 bottles available
Winery note
“Deeper red hues and spice on the nose, black cherry, boysenberry, violets, cardamom, balsam, enveloping and textural with juicy, lovely acidity, firm tannins on opening that integrate over several days as the weight and texture of the wine fills in. Aromatically, the high point seems to really arrive after being open for about 48 hours, and the seamless interplay between fruit, baking spice, loamy earth, and hints of kitchen herbs is dramatic and superlative. In the zone the nose here is absolutely intoxicating.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Heritage No. 19, Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2021 750ml $66.50 special, 5 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“Coming from the Whistling Ridge and pouring a deeper ruby hue, the 2021 Pinot Noir Heritage No. 19 is floral, ripe, and spicy with aromas of grenadine, violets, licorice candy, and sage. Medium-bodied and spicy, with stemmy forest herbs, dried orange peel, and smoky earth, it has gripping structure and a savory finish.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2021 750ml $24 special, 26 bottles available
Winery note
“The 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir shows aromatics of sweet dark strawberry, boysenberry and black cherry fruits. On the palate more dark black and red fruits, coffee, floral, and amaro notes, and an overlying savory, dark and wild spice and kitchen herb. Tannins are fine, but firm on the finish, and the palate is juicy and medium-light bodied. As with all of our Pinot Noirs, fermentations are 100% whole cluster, and relatively cool and slow…”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Pumphouse Block Temperance Hill Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml $54.50 special, 10 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 92 points
“The 2021 Pinot Noir Pumphouse Block is sourced from the Temperance Hill Vineyard and pours a touch deeper ruby hue, with aromas of grenadine, violets, cinnamon, and forest herbs. Structured and medium-bodied, it has a gripping youthful texture, with loads of spice filling the palate and a bit of stemmy astringency throughout that will need time to potentially harmonize. It’s going to need time to see where this goes, but it has potential for sure.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Rosé of Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery note
“Peach blossoms, wild strawberries, star fruit, green melon, light florals. This is very pretty in the nose, light bodied with plenty of flavor, and brightly refreshing to drink. The bottle disappears quickly. Perfect for sunny days watching the hummingbirds, grilling chicken, and sushi. 82% direct press from the blanc de noir program and 18% saignee from 100% whole cluster ferments of Whistling Ridge and Durant.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Temperance Hill Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml $59 special, 7 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“The 2021 Chardonnay Temperance Hill is incredible in its aromatics for lovers of well-managed reduction. Bright golden-yellow, it’s flush with flint wet stones, vibrant citrus and golden pineapple. Full-bodied, with a core of driving citrus and energetic acidity, it has a long and saline finish, with a weightless feel and elegant balance. It has a lovely, rounded edge to its acidity and does not come across as harsh.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Temperance Hill Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml $49 special, 28 bottles available
Eric Guido-Vinous 93+ points
“The remarkably pretty 2021 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill slowly evolves in the glass, wafting up with a bouquet of dried strawberries, cedar, crushed stone, and dusty rose. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied weight and crisp red fruits cascading across a core of brisk acidity. Tactile mineral tones mingle with a gentle layer of fine tannins as the 2021 finishes a spicy citrus twang, long and staining yet still remarkably fresh. 100% whole cluster.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Tsai Vineyard Chardonnay, Yamhill-Carlton 2021 750ml $49 special, 12 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“The medium golden 2021 Chardonnay Tsai Vineyard is ripe with forward aromatics of preserved Meyer lemon, toasted spice, pineapple rind, and gunflint. Medium-bodied and silky on the palate, it has great balanced energy as well as a long, clean finish, with notes of lemon custard on the back palate.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Tsai Vineyard Pinot Blanc, Yamhill-Carlton 2023 750ml $24 special 26 bottles available
Winery note “I love this wine…it’s my perfect combination of weightless, supple, and zingy. So refreshing … if Pinot Blanc were grown in Chablis this is what it would taste like. Perfect with simply prepared shellfish: oysters on the halfshell, scallops, crab, even lobster.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2021 750ml $49 special, 35 bottles available

“The 2021 Pinot Noir Whistling Ridge is spicy and savory in the glass, leading with a rich blend of steeped plums, cola and rose petals giving way to hints of clove. This is lifted and finessed with pretty red berries and suggestions of cocoa and inner florals, all guided by fresh acidity. The 2021 tapers off with medium length and a crunchy sensation, leaving just a tinge of fine tannin framing the experience beautifully. Of note, the Whistling Ridge took three hours to blossom, and it was worth the wait.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Whistling Ridge Vineyard Riesling, Ribbon Ridge 2023 750ml $28 special, 30 bottles available
Winery note “Lime peel, stone fruit, tangerine, rainier cherry, and river stones. Raised in an old 820L Acacia puncheon, this is textural and tranquil in the attack, then unfolds like a flower blossom in the palate with soft fruit and florals which give way to juicy, lingering acidity … This is one of my favorite versions of this wine.”
Can you even call it summer before the Peyrassol Roses have arrived? We would argue no. Year in, year out, these are our most popular rose wines and it’s easy to see why: they are well-priced, historic, and always delicious.

From the foothills of the massif des Maures along the Mediterranean coast, La Commanderie de Peyrassol has consistently produced wine since 1256 when it was operated by the Knights Templar during the Crusades. It has changed hands, sometimes violently, many times over many centuries, before finally becoming the benchmark for Provencal Wines under control of the Austruy family. The wines are produced organically with naturally limited yields due to the severe climate, low-vigor soils, and age of the vines.

There are two tiers of wine and five different vintages here to be explored and while, yes, the wines do vary in polish and elegance, there is not a bad choice to be made among these bottles. Layered with herbs, stone fruit, and salinity, drinking a glass of Peyrassol will transport you to the banks of the Mediterranean.

CHÂTEAU PEYRASSOL:

WAS $159
Chateau Peyrassol Provence Rose 2017 3L $135 special, 3 bottles available
Importer Note “Made entirely from estate fruit in 2017, “Chateau” is primarily Cinsault, with increasingly smaller amounts of Grenache, Mourvedre, Tibouren, and Syrah. This is a higher-toned, more floral, more filigree wine than its brother above, with subtle herbal notes framing clean, lifted fruit on the nose. “

Importer Note “This is the elite cuvée of the estate relying as it does on grapes harvested from the oldest vines of the domaine (35 years and older). Principally composed of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah, the “Chateau” bottling also sees the addition, from time-to-time of Tibouren, the ancient and regal Provencale grape.”

Chateau Peyrassol Provence Rose 2019 1.5L $59 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate “It hints at passion fruit at first, then broadens out to include notes of pink grapefruit, red currant and even a touch of peach, but it always retains a sinewy structure and bright acidity. It’s medium-bodied, with a silky texture in the mouth and a long, mouthwatering finish.

Chateau Peyrassol Provence Rose 2022 1.5L $89 special, 5 bottles available
Importer’s Note “Very pale, lychee pink in color. The nose is fine and elegant. Complex, releasing white fleshed fruit and citrus fruits aromas, along with white floral notes. The palate is straightforward and clean. Fine and silky, it is soft, delicate and lively. The freshness of the finish is balanced with a subtle hint of saltiness.”

LE CLOS:

WAS $129
Peyrassol Cotes de Provence ‘Le Clos Peyrassol’ Rose, France 2019 1.5L $99 special, 7 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 Points “Predominantly Tibouren, with the balance of the blend being Grenache and Rolle, Peyrassol’s super pale 2019 Cotes de Provence Rose Le Clos Peyrassol offers up scents of crushed stone, garrigue, white peach and lime, all tinged with tart red berries. It’s medium-bodied on the palate, with a silky-wet stone feel and a lingering finish… “

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 Points “A highly perfumed and complex bouquet evokes fresh citrus and pit fruits, strawberry and pungent flowers, along with building mineral and succulent herb elements … Shows excellent clarity and depth to its juicy red fruit, nectarine and mango flavors, which are sweetened by a background of vanilla note.”
