New Arrivals from Bérêche et Fils

As one of the Vinopolis staff’s favorite producers, the Bereche Champagnes enchant us with near-magical tension and overwhelming complexity. They’ve mastered the art of dosage at this estate and the wines show incredible balance. This used to just be a label that professionals in the wine business knew about and adored, but now the cats out of the bag and these bottlings are earning followers far and wide.

Bérêche et Fils Coteaux Champenois Grand Cru Aÿ Blanc 2022 750ml $149 special, 3 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“Pink-grapefruit, lemon-bush and lemon-curd aromas, enhanced by lanolin and chalky minerality. Super-tense and precise on the palate with medium to full body and a long, silky and tight-knit finish. Amazing wine, available from next year. Try from 2025.”

Bérêche et Fils Aÿ Grand Cru Extra Brut Millésime 2017 750ml $219 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2017 Extra-Brut Aÿ Grand Cru is another stellar wine from Bérêche in this difficult vintage. Even so, all the richness, power and intensity of Aÿ comes through loud and clear. The wine’s presence and textural resonance are simply captivating. The Grand Cru is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, a blend that works especially well this year. (Drink between 2025-2032).”

Bérêche et Fils Vallee de la Marne Rive Gauche Extra Brut 2021 750ml $99 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points
“The 2021 Extra-Brut Rive Gauche, 100% Meunier on clay, is floral and effusive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, kirsch, cranberry and dried pear are all beautifully sculpted. The texture of the mousse is so silky, so finessed. The 2021 is incredibly impressive, especially within the context of the year. Aged on cork. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. (Drink between 2025-2031).”

Bérêche et Fils ‘Une’ Extra Brut Millésime 2015 750ml $749 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2015 Extra-Brut Une Champagne is a blend of all the 1er and Grand Crus in the cellar. It’s a step up from the debut 2014. Explosive in the glass, the 2015 possesses tremendous textural richness from start to finish. Orchard fruit, slate, chalk, mint, white flowers and a kiss of toasty brioche saturate the palate. Blending is such a central part of the identity of Champagne. Bérêche’s Extra-Brut Une Champagne makes that point loud and clear. (Drink between 2025-2035).”

Bérêche et Fils Campania Remensis Extra Brut Rosé 2021 750ml $119 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 90-92 points
“The 2021 Extra-Brut Rosé Campania Remensis is bright and crisp. Sandy soils yield an especially aromatic, airy Rosé. The 2021 is naturally on the lighter side, but then again, this is 2021. Cranberry, pink grapefruit, mint, white pepper, slate and chalk are some of the many notes that grace this chiseled, nervy Rosé. I tasted the 2021 from a trial disgorgement, hence my bracketed score. Dosage is 1.5 grams per liter, lower than the 2.5 that is planned for the commercial release. (Drink between 2026-2031).”

Bérêche et Fils Reflet d’Antan Brut (2018) NV 1.5L $849 special, 3 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points
“The NV Brut Reflet d’Antan (base 2018) is exquisite. Silky, aromatic and sublime, the Reflet d’Antan is all finesse. Silky contours caress the palate. Readers will find a Champagne of mind-blowing polish. Orchard fruit, citrus confit, spice, chamomile and a kiss of oak flesh out with time in the glass. Reflet d’Antan is one of the most unique wines in Champagne. The complexity gained through a two-level solera and lightly elevated (but not unpleasant) volatile acidity make for a vinous Champagne that exudes character from the first taste to the last. Today, Reflet d’Antan is a bit less oxidative in style than it once was, a reflection of the shift to slightly newer barrels with thick staves.”

Oregon & Walla Walla

Domaine Drouhin Oregon Roserock Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2023 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“Impeccably structured yet sleekly elegant, with raspberry and blueberry flavors accented by savory tea, stony mineral and dusky spice notes as this gathers tension toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2033.”

Domaine Drouhin Oregon Roserock Zephirine Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“A richer red hue, the 2022 Pinot Noir Zephine Roserock is also more floral and has some savory elements, but it also has a more pronounced dark stone mineral tone, with violets, black raspberries, tea leaf, and toasted spices. Medium-bodied, it’s ripe but has fantastic linear drive through its floral-noted finish, and the lift almost suggests whole cluster, yet it’s entirely destemmed. Drink it over the next 15 or more years.”

Pierre-Yves Colin made wine at his father’s esteemed estate, Domaine Marc Collin, up until the year 2005. At that point, he split off and started his own domaine, based in Chassagne-Montrachet, while getting a boost from some of his family’s vineyard holdings. Outside of Chassagne, he produces Meursault, St. Aubin, and Puligny-Montrachet.

Part of the changes Pierre-Yves decided to make in starting his own project was to do away with batonnage during elevage as well as employing large, demi-muid barrels in lieu of smaller vessels. The wines are wonderfully layered and precise. Msr. Colin has grown to become one of the great values in the Cote de Beaune, winning over sommeliers, shopkeeps, and critics alike.

France – Champagne

The proprietress of Marie-Courtin, Dominique Moreau, is part of the growing grower contingent of young luminaries in Champagne, including Cedric Bouchard and Vouette & Sorbee. Moreau and these others saw the conditions of viticulture in Champagne and resolved to farm better, both for the health of their families and also for the quality of the wines coming out of those vineyards.

On a hillside of the Cote des Bars, near the village of Polisot, Dominique Moreau took over a small vineyard of mostly 40–50-year-old Pinot Noir vines in 2001. She set out to produce single-vineyard, single-varietal, single-vintage Champagnes from biodynamically grown grapes. She farmed with meticulous care and vinified au naturel. Native yeasts, no dosage, minimalist intervention at all decision points. This was and still is a sharp turn from the conventional mind-set in Champagne, which is to produce a homogenous product and plenty of it.

In 2006, her vision became something the world beyond the Aube could share. But her wines didn’t go far, at first. Restaurants and Champagne bars in Paris intercepted most of the mere 1,000 cases or so. Though production and distribution have expanded since those early days, Moreau’s bottlings are still rarities.

The results, if highly limited, are spectacular. Her wines (named after her grandmother) show as tightly coiled, chiseled masterpieces, with incredible energy packed into an edgy frame. They demonstrate a fruity plushness offset by an incomparable mineral-driven tension that drives the somms in Portland, and her growing fanbase, wild.

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Blanches Voies is every bit as captivating as it was last year. It remains very young, intensely saline and full of promise. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. Dried lemon peel, marzipan, white flowers and chalk stain the palate with notable intensity. What a wine! Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: April 2021. (Drink between 2025-2035).”

New Arrivals from Goodfellow Family Cellars

Marcus Goodfellow is one of the most talented winemakers in Oregon. We count ourselves lucky to have had a strong relationship with his winery since its early days under the old name of Matello. He is joined by the equally talented and knowledgeable Megan Joy.

Their wines showcase their microscopic understanding of the potential in the terroirs of the Willamette Valley. Together, they craft wines that continually improve—both in the cellar and vintage to vintage. We love the wines for their coiled power and Burgundian structure, and we stack them enthusiastically & abundantly in our own personal cellars to adore for decades to come.

Goodfellow Family Cellars Long Acre Whistling Ridge Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2023 750ml $56 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Decanter 96 points
“The Long Acre portions of the dry-farmed Whistling Ridge Vineyard were planted in 1996 from a clonal mix of Pinot Noir sourced from throughout the Willamette Valley’s top sites. It’s effusively floral, as rose petals, lavender and lilac leap forth, followed by fresh crushed raspberries, orange peel and dried mint. The vibrance of the Goodfellow Pinot Noirs offers a pulsating resonance in their youth. Electric on the palate as green strawberries, lively notes of pine and sous bois, tart cherry and hibiscus tea. These are structured wines from Marcus Goodfellow that evolve wonderfully with age. Flourishes of umami give a salty depth to the finish. (Drink between 2025-2037).”

New Mosel Arrivals from Falkenstein

Since 1985, Erich and Marita Weber, now joined in their work by their son Johannes, have crafted some of the most soulful and quietly complex Riesling from their ancient vines.

The Webers personally work their vines by hand using organic methods, deviating only by avoiding the use of copper, as it is a toxic heavy metal. They do not use herbicides or fertilizers and avoid tilling for the most part. Yields are kept very low due to the vines’ ages and pruning down to one flat cane per vine.

Some of their prize vineyard holdings include Niedermenniger Herrenberg, from which they source their Pinot Noir for their rosé and the Weissburgunder for their extraordinary Pet-Nat, Niedermenniger Sonnenberg, Krettnacher Altenberg, and Krettnacher Euchariusberg, home to some of their oldest vines. Across their holdings, the vines average 40 to 50-years-old at minimum, including ancient, ungrafted vines that are nearly a century old. Harvest is done by hand on these iron-rich slate and quartz soils.

Erich focuses on dry, or “trocken”, wines whereas Johannes is more inclined to crafting the off-dry to sweet wines. According to importer Lars Carlberg, Falkenstein is one of the few Saar producers that bottles completely dry Rieslings. The region’s cool weather would result in wines too ascorbic and austere to be drinkable. Erich avoids such issues because of the great age of their vines and their low yields, which allow for concentration and the ripe and exotic fruit profiles that beautifully offset the brisk acidity.

The biggest argument that you’ll get from our staff is not whether you should buy the wines from Falkenstein (if you don’t, we will), but whether to focus on dry or sweet wines. In the dry’s corner, we have lush minerality, cut, and poise. In the sweet’s corner, you can experience gorgeous textures, impeccable balance, and near-infinite cellaring capabilities. Your choice, though it’s certainly worth trying both. (If you open the wines young, you may notice a slight spritz due to the residual, naturally-present carbon dioxide left over from fermentation that also helps preserve the wines.)

Now is an excellent time to stock your cellar and table with one of the finest producers tucked in a little-known corner of the Mosel. You’ll be glad you did.

“The 2024er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese Klaus (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from fruit harvested on 60-year-old vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. A whiff of initial reduction slowly gives way to fresh and minty notes of vineyard peach, candied grapefruit, lime, thyme, plum, and white pepper. The wine proves gorgeously juicy yet fresh, spicy, and smoky. The finish is marked by acidity, which brings a lot of tension and zesty freshness. This remarkable Spätlese now only needs a bit of time to reveal all its facets. 2034-2054.”

Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese AP #5, Mosel 2024 750ml $41.90 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 96 points
“The 2024er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese Förster (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was made from clean fruit harvested from vines planted in the 1960s in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It delivers a gorgeously complex and attractive nose of whipped almond cream, greengage, thyme, lavender, orange blossom, and lime. The wine is incredibly balanced and mixes nice fresh, ripe fruits and citrusy fruits, spices, and mint. The finish is magnificently long and pure. This is a superb Spätlese in the making! 2034-2054.”

Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermennig Herrenberg Rosé Trocken, Mosel 2023 750ml $29 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 88 points
“AP: 23 24. The 2023er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Rosé Trocken is made with Spätburgunder. The wine offers a subtle nose of raspberry, barbecue herbs, chalk, and white flowers. It is rather sharp and precise on the palate and leaves a pure and precise feel of minerals, raspberry, and cranberry in the finish. 2025-2026.”
Kopke, founded in 1638, makes what might be the most vibrant and long-lived port wines available. They have been through adverse times in their nearly 400-year history, seeing dramatic shifts in the climate, swings in the popularity of their product, and the rise and fall of populist dictators. Through all of this, they’ve been consistent in their commitment to making the greatest Tawny and Colheita (vintage Tawny) Port available.

Winery Note
“Kopke White Colheita 2002 shows a straw yellow colour, and an intense and rich bouquet, with predominant aromas of dried fruit and light notes of exotic fruit wrapped in delicate hints of honey. On the palate it is fresh and intense, with the avours of ageing in wood, such as spice, perfectly combined with the sweet notes of fruit in syrup. It unfolds into a long and enduring nish.”
