While the Mosel is best known for its sweet Rieslings, some of the finest producers craft dry and barely off-dry bottlings. If you’re looking for powerful expressions from old vines, look no further than Carl Loewen.
Loewen’s holdings include some of the oldest vines in the entire Mosel. His aim is to preserve these cherished parcels, returning them to their historic esteem and often elevating them to new heights. The wines are textural, rich and complex, often from ancient, ungrafted parcels. But the real magic behind these staff-favorite Rieslings are their low prices, reminding us that there is still value to be found in one of Europe’s most hallowed vineyard lands.

Mosel Fine Wines 93 points “The 2021er Maximin 1896 Herrenberg Alte Reben Trocken, as it is referred to on the front label, is a dry wine picked on un-grafted vines planted in 1896 in a plot at the lower end of the vineyard and was fermented and matured in Fuder. It proves quite smoky and herbal at first before delivering a pure nose of freshly cut pineapple, greengage, pear, and minty herbs, all wrapped into lime and may tree. The wine proves zesty and pure on the light-weighted yet complex palate. It leaves a very intense and smoky feel in the long and focused finish. The after-taste is all about lime, spices, and herbs, with a touch of salty elements in the background. This is a really great dry Riesling. 2025-2036.”

Within a few years of taking over his family’s estate in 1984, Dominique Lafon’s wines became some of the most prized bottlings in Burghound. In 1999, he founded a new biodynamic winery in the Macon: Héritiers du Comte Lafon.
A longtime proponent of organic and sustainable viticulture, Héritiers (meaning “inheritors” in French) is a project he runs with his daughter and nephew. His belief in and passion for the Macon region has made Héritiers a towering beacon for fine wine. On top of elevating quality, he believes that his commitment to sustainable viticulture is a commitment to the next generation of the Lafon family, the future “héritiers” of the estate.
