Marsannay
At the very north of Burgundy is the village of Marsannay. Once overlooked in favor of its more famous neighbors, such as Nuits-St-Georges or Gevrey-Chambertin, interest in Marsannay has grown as its neighbors’ prices climb and climate change brings much-needed warmth to Marsannay. These wines are achieving more weight and impact, making Marsannay great source for value without sacrificing complexity.
Though Pinot Noir is by far the most common variety, Chardonnay is also produced. Historically, Gamay and Aligoté were the most common varieties and rosé the dominate style. Because of this, no Grand Cru or Premier Cru vineyards were designated, though Clos du Roy and Les Longeroies are under consideration for Premier Cru status.
One of our favorite producers in the area is Sylvain Pataille. Working with nearly 40 acres of vines that are all certified organic, these are impressive, soulful wines that offer plenty of value. These are quick movers at the shop, so make your selections early.

“The 2022 Marsannay Blanc is a blend of several parcels. It was fairly reduced on the nose when I encountered it. The palate is more promising much more finely balanced with perfectly judged acidity, tangible mineralité, and a delicacy on the finish that I appreciate. Give it 12 months once in bottle.” –Neal Martin, Vinous

Domaine Charlopin Tissier Marsannay La Montagne 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $56.50, that’s $53.68 at 5% off and $50.85 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “Domaine Charlopin Tissier was created in 2013 with only 1.08 hectares of vines by husband and wife Yann Charlopin and Justine Tissier. The young couple now hold just over 4 hectares of vines in Bourgogne, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Marsannay, Gevrey Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Vosne Romanée, and Pernand-Vergelesses. Inspired by the elegant wines of his mentor Jean-Marie Fourrier, the wines of Domaine Charlopin Tissier are wines of elegance and finesse. After studying wine in Beaune and spending time making wine in Tasmania, Sancerre and Chablis, Yann Charlopin returned home to work with his father Philippe Charlopin. When the opportunity arose to acquire some of Justine’s family’s vines in Marsannay and with a vision of the wines he would like to create, Yann did not pass up the opportunity to venture out on his own. With the encouragement of Jean-Marie Fourrier, Yann and Justine purchased Domaine David Clarke in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the vineyard, all farming is organic and done by hand. Once harvested, all grapes are fully de-stemmed, undergo a cold maceration and are fermented with natural yeasts. Yann does little racking as he prefers a long, slow élevage on the fine lees.”
Jerome Galeyrand Marsannay Clos du Roy 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $135, that’s $128.25 at 5% off and $121.50 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 92 points “The 2021 Marsannay Clos du Roy marries the natural tension of the year with good depth. Dark red cherry/plum fruit, spice, leather, smoke and blood orange all meld together. Give this year or two to soften. It’s a very promising wine from Galeyrand.”
Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay L’Ancestrale 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Decanter 96 points “This thrilling wine is deeply complex without any heaviness at all. The initial attack begins with seductive aromas of ripe cassis and mulberry fruit and hints of smoke, earth, spice, and mint. The texture is approachable and supple, yet the finish is long and refined. The grapes come from a collection of Pataille’s favourite parcels, including 90-year-old vines in the Clos de Roy and others in En Clémengeot and Les Ouzeloy, all of them left unhedged in a v-shaped goblet form (tressé) and worked by horse, farmed organically with biodynamic methods to make this spectacular wine. (Drink between 2032-2075).”
The Royal Tokaji Company has led the region’s renaissance. Notable wine writer Hugh Johnson founded the company in 1990 with the sole purpose of revitalizing these once renowned wines. In addition to their maniacal focus on quality, the company has also been reviving the single-vineyards that were once synonymous with the best Hungarian bottlings.
Furmint, the grape that is synonymous with Hungary and exists few places elsewhere, forms the back-bones of these incredible wines. Stunning acidity alongside honeyed fruit flavors and exotic spices make this unique variety capable of producing some of the longest-lived wines in history.

Royal Tokaji ‘Mezes Maly’ Furmint Dry, Tokaj Great 1st Growth, Hungary 2022 750ml Was $39, Now $33 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Importer Tasting Note “Mézes Mály Furmint is a sleek, concentrated wine with elegance and a subtle floral character – hints of spice, and plenty of white peach and apricot fruit all balanced by refreshing, crisp acidity and a lingering finish.”
Winery Note “Mézes Mály is one of just two vineyards classified as a Great First Growth. Its volcanic bedrock is overlaid with deep loess soil, giving elegance, finesse and floral notes to its wines. Royal Tokaji owns 11 of its 19 hectares, facing south with views to the Great Plain in the distance. Mézes Mály Furmint is a sleek, concentrated wine with elegancy and a subtle floral character, hints of spice, and plenty of white peach and apricot fruit all balanced by refreshing, crisp acidity and a lingering finish.”
Royal Tokaji Szt. Tamás Aszu 6-Puttonyos, Tokaj, Hungary 2017 500ml Was $119, Now $108 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 95 points “The 2017 Tokaji Szt. Tamás 6-Puttonyos comes from red-clay topsoils in the commune of Mád. This is more backward compared to the Mézes Mály, and very much more citrus-driven, featuring lemon peel, orange zest and crushed stone aromas; the Aszú element is more discreet. The fresh, vibrant palate is well balanced and harmonious, offering a fine bead of acidity and candied orange peel toward the finish. Edgier than Royal Tokaji’s other 2017s, and perhaps spicier on the finish, this will be fascinating to observe mature in bottle. 3,635 bottles produced.”

Royal Tokaji “By Appointment Only” No. 10 Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos Furmint 2013 375ml Was $99, Now $89 special, 4 half-bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Rich intense nose with hints of orange and spice. Full flavoured with citrus, pear and quince fruit, outstanding structure and a long, crisp finish. A perfect vintage with miraculous weather, perfect conditions during autumn for the development of Aszú – misty mornings, warm drying winds blowing across the Great Plain of Hungary and sweeping the mists up into the vineyards. Harvested from Royal Tokaji exclusively owned vineyards, excellent quality Furmint Aszú berries with good structure and perfect botrytis were macerated in fermenting Furmint must for two days. After pressing, the wine was filled into three 300 litre old Hungarian oak casks and transferred down into Royal Tokaji’s extensive, deep underground cellars to mature for 23 months. The final blend was made during early spring in 2016 and bottled in May. Enjoy at this young age or cellar for future enjoyment as the wine matures. Sip on its own as an aperitif, serve with fruit-based desserts or hard cheeses or enjoy this mouth-watering wine on its own instead of a dessert.”
