France- Champagne

Doyard Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Champagne 2013 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 11 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru has also turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with notes of citrus oil, peach, white flowers and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, it’s taut and chiseled, with serious reserves of concentration and a long, mineral finish. Disgorged in spring 2021, while its quality is apparent, this is predictably a little introverted out of the gates, so I look forward to revisiting it later this year.”

France- Languedoc

Domaine Lafage ‘Nicolas’ Grenache Noir Vieilles Vignes IGP Cotes Catalanes 2019 750ML ($21.95) $19
special
, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Domaine Lafage ‘Nicolas’ Grenache Noir Vieilles Vignes IGP Cotes Catalanes 2019 ($249.95) $208 special, (That’s only $17.34 per bottle!)
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points
“All Grenache brought up in demi–muids and aged on lees for 8 months, the medium ruby/purple hued color of the 2019 Cuvée Nicolas is followed by a killer bouquet of kirsch liqueur, savory spices, cured meats, and peppery garrigue. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s another insane value from this team.”

Germany – Mosel

Weingut A.J. Adam In der Sangerei Riesling Mosel 2019 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 96 points
“The 2019er in der Sängerei, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is an off-dry wine fermented in Fuder from vines still raised on single pole in the Sängerei sector situated high up in the main hill of the Dhroner Hofberg. It offers a deeply complex, pure, and flinty nose of grilled grapefruit, Conference pear, aniseed herbs, smoke, and greengage. The wine is superbly well-balanced and structured on the palate. A juicy feel of residual sugar is wrapped into ripe and zesty acidity, which lifts up the aromatics and gives a stunningly lively side to this joyful and complex off-dry Riesling. The finish is very pure, focused, and hugely long, and makes one salivate and want to go for more. The after-taste is all about spices and salty elements. This is a major success in this so-often forgotten category called “off-dry Riesling.” 2022-2034+.”

Austria – Wachau

Weingut Leo Alzinger Ried Hohereck Riesling Smaragd Wachau 2020 750ML ($64.95) $51.90 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“The perfumed peach, rose and Amalfi-lemon nose sucks you into this succulent and beautifully balanced dry riesling that shows why the Wachau has a special reputation for these wines. Underplayed power at the very long, mineral finish. Limited quantity. Drink or hold.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Weingut Leo Alzinger Hollerin Riesling Smaragd Wachau 2020 750ML ($59.95) $48 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points
“Who says dry riesling is always tart? The effusive grapefruit and peachy nose, with hints of sesame and hibiscus, remains cool and subtle. Hard to resist this as it pulls you into the juicy and bright palate which feels a bit lighter than it actually is. Long, rather zesty finish with delicate minerality that makes you want more. Drink or hold.”

Austria –Niederosterreich

Schloss Gobelsburg Sekt Brut Reserve Niederosterreich NV 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Wine & Spirits 93 points
“Here’s a decadent bubbly, as rich and layered as a croissant, with a similar balance of toasty, nutty notes and buttery luzury. Michael Moosbrugger based it on gruner veltliner, augments it with pinot noir and riesling, then ages it for six months in barrel; he ferments the wine a second time in bottle, where he leaves it for at least three years before disgorgement. The veltliner’s earthy fruit gives away the fact that this isn’t Champagne, but it acts like one.”

Cut-Price Caruso:
5 Day Sale on 2019 Perricone

When you think of Sicilian wine, your mind probably goes to Mt. Etna right off the bat. However the whole island of Sicily produces wine. Located only 12 miles from the ocean, Caruso has been making wine since the late 1800’s. However it wasn’t until the 1990’s did they ever bottle their own wine, previously contracting out to the local cooperatives. With holdings encompassing almost 300 acres at almost 1000 feet above sea level these are some of the best examples of “New Sicily” winemaking and production. Their portfolio is entirely composed of indigenous Sicilian varietals, including the exceedingly rare Perricone. Liked to Barbara by wine writer and critic, Jancis Robinson, it’s a juicy yet herbaceous red that is spectacular with pizza or anything else based in red sauce.

Caruso & Minini ‘Naturalmente Bio’ Perricone Terre Siciliane IGT Sicily 2019 750ML Was $18 now $16 until Sunday 2/27/22

On the Horizon:
2020 JJ Prum Arriving Friday

Manfred and Katarina Prum make some of the finest and most sought after wines of the middle-Mosel. The Prum wines are high-wire acts of tension between fruit and intense minerality and display their terroir in the most expressive way.  Part of this is that their parcels have lots of old, ungrafted vines and part of it is spontaneous fermentation and whatever magic the Prum family uses in the cellar.  No matter what, these are always some of the finest and longest lived wines in Germany. As you can expect with one of the most famous cult producers in Germany, if not the world quantities are highly allocated!

Arriving Friday, February 25th:

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Mosel 2020 375ML ($41.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 93+ points
“The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese offers a beautifully pure and ripe nose of smoke, grapefruit, lime, vineyard peach, minty herbs, and bacon-driven aromatics from residual from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine coats the palate with gorgeously ripe and juicy notes of fruits and leaves a superbly pure, smooth, and almost soft and suave feel in the hugely long finish. The aftertaste is still loaded with sweetness in need of integration, which will need quite some time to integrate. There is upside potential as the wine gains finesse with age. 2035-2050+.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Mosel  2020 750ML ($149.95) $125 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 94+ points
“The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese GK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a superbly elegant and refined nose of wet stone, mango, herbs, apricot flower, almond cream, honeyed peach, candied grapefruit, and guava. The wine proves deliciously smooth and creamy on the palate and leaves a great feel of candied citrusy fruits and sweet exotic flavors in the well-delineated and precise finish packed with fruity notes of pear and peach. This gorgeous noble-sweet wine will need more than a decade to fully integrate its sweetness and has even some upside as it gains finesse and complexity. 2035-2060.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett Mosel 2020 1.5L ($149.95) $129 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 91 points
“The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett is still marked by some fine flinty reduction at first but quickly reveals an aromatic and superbly attractive side including whipped almond cream, grapefruit, white flowers, vineyard peach, herbs, and a hint of Pina Colada. The wine proves very delicate and airy on the light-weighted palate. The aftertaste leaves one with superbly smoky and fruity flavors, which still proves tight but loaded with energy. This is a superb Kabinett in the making. 2027-2040.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese Mosel 2020 750ML ($59.95) $49.90 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 92+ points
“The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese offers a quite rich and even slightly ripe nose of almond cream and bakery products as well as honeyed yellow peach, William’s pear, apricot, and anise, all wrapped into smoky and refined elements. The wine coats the palate with ample and sweet fruits, which give a smoother and ampler structure to the wine. The finish has however more presence and intensity, but still needs to integrate its tale of initial sweetness. This clearly has some upside potential as it gains finesse and elegance over time. 2028-2045.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Mosel  2020 375ML ($49.95) $41.90 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points
“The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a gorgeously attractive and ripe nose of almond cream, honeyed peach, smoke, tangerine, orange zest, candied grapefruit, and apricot. The wine is luscious and proves well on the sweet side on the palate. There is presence and intensity, yet the finish is already airier and more refined than what one could initially expect. Patience will be required, as usual, for the wine to develop its full complexity and integrate all its elements. 2035-2050.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Mosel 2020 750ML ($149.95) $129 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 95 points
“The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a most gorgeous, superbly complex, and rather subtle nose of minty herbs, candied grapefruit, fine honeyed peach, anise, smoke, and herbs. The wine proves much richer and riper on the palate, where plenty of exotic and ripe fruits join the party. This fruity, smooth, and juicy side is nicely wrapped into zest and tension in the very long finish. Expect more than a decade of patience to get the full impact of this stunning wine. But you will not regret. 2035-2060.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Mosel 2020 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points
“The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett greets one with a superbly aromatic and refined floral nose of tangerine, candied grapefruit, minty herbs, some floral nuances, and yellow peach. The wine is very delicate and rather smooth on the spicy and suave palate. The finish proves tight and lean as some fine zesty elements come through and add a very playful and truly Kabinett footprint. The wine combines a feeling of light ripeness and cool freshness and proves a very successful Kabinett. 2028-2040.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Mosel 2020 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points
“The 2020er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers an attractive nose of smoke, flint, apricot flower, a hint of melon, Conference pear, greengage, and anise, as well as some exotic nuances. The wine proves delicately complex and fruity on the smooth palate. Fruity and ripe flavors of pear, melon, and coconut cream come through in the well-delineated and superbly complex finish. This is a gorgeous and beautifully complex Auslese in the making. 2030-2050.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese Mosel 2020 750ML ($54.95) $45 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points
“The 2020er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese still proves flinty, quite smoky, and reductive at first before it almost reluctantly reveals its super nose made of stone fruits, vineyard peach, Conference pear, anise, and herbs. The wine is carried by a beautifully ripe and zesty acidity running through the palate which lifts up the ripe flavors of apricot, almond cream, and pineapple. The finish is light-weighted, very precise, and focused. This is a beautiful Spätlese. 2028-2045.”

Newly Arrived
Pichler-Krutzler

Erich Krutzler is a famous winemaker in his own right, having started the Moric project in Burgenland before moving around the region making internationally recognized wines, however until he married the daughter of FX Pichler, his name was less than recognizable to most wine lovers in the US.  His project with his wife, Pichler-Krutlzer, is based around the great vineyards of the Wachau and has captured our hearts.  Krutzler prefers brighter, fresher wines than his father-in-law, so these wines tend to have a little less power and a lot more versatility at the table.  They’re breathtakingly complex, but you can actually drink them with food.  Also (and more importantly) their priced much more reasonably than the FX wines.

Newly Arrived from Pichler-Krutzler

Pichler-Krutzler Durnstein Gruner Veltliner, Wachau 2019 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 17 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points
“Complex aromas of peach pie, mango and flint follow through to a full body with a tight, concise palate of dried citrus and smoke. It’s long and flavorful. Drink or hold.”
Wine Enthusiast 91 points “A beautifully pure tone of green pear is surrounded by creaminess and lemon ripeness on the nose. A mossy, herbal tint adds allure. The palate is rounded, with a ripe, fresh juiciness that is edged by white plum and citrus. -Anne Krebiehl MW”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Pichler-Krutzler Loibenberg Gruner Veltliner, Wachau 2019 750ML ($59.95) $45 special, 24 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“Did somebody say lobster thermidor? A noble grüner veltliner that is so ripe (apricot, mirabelle and just a hint of papaya), but every bit as subtle, with a very polished texture on the rich palate. Drink or hold.”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Earth and salty yeast come together on the nose, promising texture and savoriness. The palate then adds a lovely Russet pear ripeness and roundness that sits well with the earthy, concentrated, yeasty backdrop that holds pithy concentration and lip-smacking freshness. This is lovely, round and expressive. -Anne Krebiehl MW”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92 points “From the bottom of the cru and on loess soils, the 2019 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner is open and refined on the nose, with ripe and elegant yellow-fleshed fruit aromas and finely flinty notes. Elegant and round, with fine and ripe, lush fruit, fine acidity and an intense and mouth-filling finish, this is a Loibenberg that gets its phenolic grip from the maceration. 14% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in June 2021.”

Pichler-Krutzler Pfaffenberg Alte Reben Gruner Veltliner, Kremstal 2019 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Vinified in a new, untoasted 900-liter oak vat, the 2019 Ried Pfaffenberg Alte Reben Grüner Veltliner was only bottled in spring this year. The intensely citrus-colored wine shows a flinty, precise, fine and fresh bouquet with ripe stone fruit aromas and spices of crunchy crystalline stones. Creamy textured, ripe, lush and very elegant, with some attractive oak notes but fine tannins, this is a sensual, well-balanced and perfectly round Pfaffenberg that has to be marketed as Kremstal Reserve because the oak influence was too dominant for the DAC tasters in Krems. There is 14.5% alcohol, which you don’t feel due to the mineral freshness and elegance. Tasted at the domain in June 2021.”

The next best price is $74.89

Pichler-Krutzler Kellerberg Riesling, Wachau 2019 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 97 points
“Cellar Selection. A still shy nose is not ready to give up its secrets easily, despite much swirling and air. It is the palate that lifts the veil on the citric depth and intensity at the heart of this wine. Tangerine and lemon seem to emanate from a deep, stony, steely and cool depth. That citrus heart is concentrated and seems to draw on a boundless energy that drives it forward with purpose. This is beautiful, chiseled and unbelievably vivid. Drink 2025–2050. -Anne Krebiehl MW”
James Suckling 96 points “Maybe I’m amazed, because this stunning dry riesling marries ravishing fruit aromas. The spectrum ranges from mirabelle to candied lemon via peach, also with wild-herb notes, plus stony minerality. The long finish flickers between lime zest and white chocolate. And all somehow remains delicate! Drink or hold.”

Pichler-Krutzler Pfaffenberg Alte Reben Riesling, Kremstal 2019 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“So ripe, fragrant and delicate, this is a dry-riesling masterpiece that squares the circle of concentration and lightness, the palate a star-burst of stone and exotic-fruit aromas. And at the end, this pulls you straight back to the moment you discovered its ravishing beauty. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2019 Ried Pfaffenberg Alte Reben Riesling is clear, elegant and intense on the nose, with crunchy flinty notes, lemon oil and ripe stone fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and intense, with rich and ripe fruit yet also finesse and mineral vitality, this is a complex and stimulatingly salty Pfaffenberg that was bottled with 13% alcohol in spring this year. Tasted at the domain in June 2021.”

Pichler-Krutzler ‘In der Wand’ Riesling, Wachau 2019 750ML ($41.95) $33 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 94 points
“A hint of creaminess creeps deliciously into the orange zest notes on the nose. The palate comes on light feet but is vibrant with zesty notes of ripe orange and Amalfi lemon. The body is slender but concentrated, almost fizzing with ripe and utterly fresh zestiness. The finish is clean, taut and dry with lasting, mouthwatering citrus. Drink by 2040. -Anne Krebiehl MW”
James Suckling 93 points “Lots of flint and gun metal with lemon and lime and some stone character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with lots of character and a dry, fruity finish. Already shows some bottle bouquet. Drink now.”

Crazy for Cristom

Cristom is one of the hallowed names in Oregon. They’ve been a top name since their inception in 1993 and make reference point wines from their beautiful estate vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills. Much of the credit for their success goes to their vineyards—located just below Bethel Heights and Temperance Hill, truly Cristom is one of the Grand Cru sites of Oregon. The rest of the credit goes to Steve Doerner, their winemaker since the beginning, who made a name for Calera in the ’80s before moving to Oregon and becoming a local legend.

These are wines that have powerful personalities allied to a Burgundian sense of proportion and savor. Doerner loves to use a lot of whole clusters in fermentations and so the wines always have a grip and earthiness that grounds their deep fruit and rich textures.

“The 2019 Chardonnay Eola-Amity Hills is characterized by broad, intense flavors foiled by tangy acidity. It offers aromas of apple pie, honeycomb, toast and white blossoms and is intensely flavored, ripe and textural, finishing with energetic freshness.”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “Wonderfully floral on the nose, sappy and rich on the palate, this expressive wine is packed with flavorful fruits perfectly set against tangy acidity. White peach, Asian pear and a touch of lime combine on a full-bodied midpalate. The juicy fruit flavors energize the wine and set the taster up for sip after sip. -Paul Gregutt”

Cristom Louise Vineyard Chardonnay Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The 2019 Chardonnay Louise Vineyard is scented of white peaches, spring honey and hazelnuts, which seem in 2019 to capture the alluring essence of just-ripe Willamette Valley Chardonnay, tinged with tones of graphite and mushroom powder. The palate is youthfully citrusy and tangy, gaining volume and depth on the extended, honeyed finish. That racy acidity will help this age gracefully, and it will benefit from 2-3 more years in bottle.”
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “This wine is from a vineyard that sports 25-year-old Dijon clones. The flavors range from citrus to peach to pineapple, with bright natural acidity heightening the impact. It’s crystal clear, fresh and crisp, with a penetrating finish that brings a touch of wet stone. -Paul Gregutt”

Cristom Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Cristom Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills 2019 375ML ($41.95) $36 special, 11 half-bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 96 points
” The 2019 Pinot Noir Jessie Vineyard offers notable layering and purity this vintage. Intense, savory cranberry fruit is accented by tones of charcuterie and sweet balsamic on the nose, and the palate combines that sweet, savory and earthy character in a silky frame, finishing with a flourish of spices and great length.”
James Suckling 96 points “The aromas are pretty amazing here with dried flowers, pure fruit, sweet berries and dark strawberries. It’s full-bodied and very layered with ripe, velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Richness with focus. Very drinkable now, but better after 2023.”

Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills  2019 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 11 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“There’s purity of fruit to this pinot with strawberry and floral aromas that follow through to a medium body with ultra-fine, firm tannins and pretty, tangy acidity. Lemon undertones. Needs time to open. Better after 2024.”

Cristom Paul Gerrie Vineyard Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($89.95) $75 special, 13 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 97 points
“Paul Gerrie is the newest vineyard at Cristom, planted from 2016–2019; it’s 28 acres of mostly Pinot Noir and smaller portions of Chardonnay and Gamay. The 2019 Pinot Noir Paul Gerrie Vineyard combines power and precision. It opens with a pleasant touch of sweet balsamic, with Morello cherries, bergamot and loamy earth. The medium-bodied palate is surprisingly intense, all that powerful fruit accented by swirls of savory and spicy nuance. It flows through the mouth with a silky, weightless texture and finishes very long and layered.”

Graillot’s Greatness

The Northern Rhône is increasingly selling at higher prices these days that any of her sisters in the region. This is on account of a multitude of factors (Including climate change) but the lynchpin is the farmers themselves revolutionizing their villages. Arguably the best example of this is Alain Graillot, who came home to Crozes-Hermitage in 1985 after working at the legendary Domaine Dujac in Burgundy.

Alain with his sons Maxime and Antoine make wines using the same techniques that have made Dujac wines iconic like chemical-free farming practices, use of whole clusters during fermentation and long élevage in old oak. As you can expect these are among the most transparent and elegant expressions of Syrah in the world, let alone the Northern Rhône. If you ever wanted to experience The Northern Rhône through the eyes of Burgundy, here’s your chance!

Graillot wines in stock now:

Domaine Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage La Guiraude Rhone 2016 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points
“Opaque ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, olive, potpourri and incense, and exotic spice and mineral notes build steadily with air. Sweet, focused and penetrating on the palate, offering intense, spice-tinged boysenberry, cherry preserve and violet pastille flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Blends concentration and energy with a deft hand and finishes with superb, gently tannic persistence.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 93 points “Showing greater intensity and complexity than the regular bottling, the 2016 Crozes Hermitage la Guiraude also is made entirely whole cluster, yet it shows less prominent stemmy notes. Olive, roasted meat and cherry notes mingle easily on the nose and palate. This is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, fine, elegant finish. It should drink well for over a decade.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Very focused, with a sanguine thread weaving around gentle steeped plum and black currant fruit, all backed by singed mesquite notes and a mouthwatering minerally edge. Should age nicely. Drink now through 2030. 500 cases made, 100 cases imported. — JM”

“Inky ruby. Mineral- and spice-accented aromas of ripe dark berries and candied violet show outstanding clarity and lift. At once rich and energetic in the mouth, offering juicy blackberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors that slowly turn sweeter on the back half. Shows outstanding clarity on the long, penetrating finish, which features well-judged tannins and lingering floral and spice notes.”
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “Maxime Graillot was confident that he will bottle a La Guiraude from 2018, but the selection hadn’t yet been made at the time of my visit. This barrel of 2018 Crozes Hermitage shows superb aromatics, with hints of black tea accenting cassis and blueberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, it reveals some chocolaty notes yet remains remarkably fresh on the finish.”

Maxime Graillot Domaine des Lises Equis Crozes-Hermitage Rhone 2018 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92 points
“Opaque ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented dark berries and a hint of licorice on the lively nose. Subtly sweet blackberry and cherry flavors show very good clarity and energy and pick up a suave floral quality with aeration. Displays fine definition and strong, spicy lift on the persistent, gently tannic finish, which leaves lingering cherry and exotic spice notes behind. 30% whole clusters.”
Grapelive 91 points “Maxime Graillot of Equis, who also now makes the wines at his famous father’s Alain Graillot, has crafted a full bodied charmer of a Syrah from his Domaine des Lises in Crozes-Hermitage that is bursting with ripe black and blue fruits, ultra silky tannins and a mouth filling plush sensation, adding hints of violets, sweet herbs, licorice, cassis and a touch of pepper and cedar. This 2018 is surprisingly luxurious and supple, making it a wine that is ready to drink young, no cellaring required here and it so easy to quaff, you’ll almost think it is a new world wine, though with food and air the true nature and terroir come through with subtle earthy accents. This a more impactful version of Maxime’s Crozes-Hermitage than normal and big step up from the the other Equis Syrahs, which are food friendly quaffers. The Domaine des Lises 2018 Crozes-Hermitage, made from 100% Syrah, comes from an organic 40 year old parcel in the lieu-dit of “Les Picheres” set on the regions classic rocky gravel soils, which is less than 2km from the renown estate vines of Domaine Alain Graillot. Maxime employed a traditional approach here, using about 30% whole-cluster and native yeasts with ripe, late picked grapes and he aged this vintage in well seasoned old French oak barrels for close to a year. “

“Expressive cherry, black currant and floral aromas, along with hints of smoky bacon, licorice and black pepper. Nicely concentrated and energetic on the palate, offering lively, mineral-driven black/blue fruit and floral pastille flavors that stretch out and become sweeter with air. Closes very long, sappy and precise, showing fine delineation and spicy bite on the youthfully tannic, floral-tinged finish. Made with 100% whole clusters.”

Collector’s Corner:
Christophe Baron Wines

As Christophe Baron approaches a quarter century making wine in Walla Walla Valley, his restless nature has spawned a number of different projects, each with their own ambition. Best known as the winemaker and founder of Cayuse in Walla Walla, it’s not well known that he hails from Champagne. After more or less putting The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater on the map, his portfolio now includes Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet, and red blends sourced from Oregon and Washington.

Only a true insider knows Monsieur Baron has a deep passion for Pinot Meunier Champagnes.  Just recently, he began producing profoundly mineral and expressive wines Champagnes from his family’s vines. The soils in the Marne Valley where Christophe sources his grapes are particularly suited for Pinot Meunier being comprised of calcareous clay over pure chalk. Meunier is famed for contributing earthy spice flavors to champagne blends and is gaining prominence as a single varietal, particularly amongst grower producers.

Christophe Baron ‘Les Alouettes’ Brut Nature Champagne 2016 1.5L ($299.95) $259 special, 5 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2016 Brut Nature Les Alouettes (Magnum) is ample and broad, with a real sense of volume that grows over time. Layered and beautifully resonant, the Alouttes is also the most sensual and immediate of these wines. Even with all of its intensity, the Alouttes is translucent and so expressive, even in the early going. Spice, dried pear, flowers and nutty accents linger. Disgorged: March, 2020.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The most reserved wine in the range is the 2016 Brut Nature Les Alouettes, from a southeast-facing site in Charly-sur-Marne. Unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus zest, apricot, orange oil and pear, framed by hints of wet stones and struck match, it’s medium to full-bodied, tightly wound and chalky, with racy acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse. Interestingly, a magnum tasted in November 2020 was rather more open and expressive than this one, tasted in early 2021.”

Christophe Baron ‘Le Dessus du Bois Marie’ Brut Nature Millesime Champagne 2016 1.5L ($319.95) $279 special, 4 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2016 Brut Nature Le Dessus Du Bois Marie (Magnum) is a wine of cut and precision. Lemon confit, spice, baked apple tart and pear notes abound. Here the expression is all about energy, tension and delineation. Tangerine oil, spice, crushed rocks and white flowers add the closing shades of complexity. Disgorged: March, 2020.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 points “Disgorged in March 2020 without dosage, Baron’s 2016 Brut Nature Le Dessus du Bois Marie is showing nicely, wafting from the glass with delicately exotic aromas of mandarin orange, pear, musky peach, clear honey and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and vinous, it’s fleshy and saline, with an enveloping core of fruit, lively acids and a long, mouthwatering finish.”

Cayuse Vineyards Wallah Wallah Special Series Syrah Walla Walla Valley #12 2018 1.5L ($319.95) $289 special, 3 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“Christophe often releases a special blend in magnum (he never says which vineyards it’s from), and the 2018 Syrah Special #12 is another gorgeous wine. Revealing a deep ruby/plum hue as well as classic Rocks notes of blue fruits, ground pepper, bacon fat, lavender, and violets, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for two decades.”

“Lots of earthy tobacco, gravelly earth, shiitake, and assorted darker fruits emerge from the 2018 The Widowmaker En Chamberlin Vineyard. Medium to full-bodied, it has a wonderful core of sweet fruit, polished tannins, and a great finish. It leans heavily into the earthy, foresty side of the spectrum. Give bottles 2-4 years in the cellar if you can, and it should have two decades of prime drinking ahead of it. This is only for those who like plenty of savory earthiness in their Bordeaux blends.”
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 94 points “Opening with a mineral-driven nose, the 2018 The Widowmaker en Chamberlin Vineyard offers up elements of dusty blackberry, hints of leather and resinous purple flowers with cinnamon and nutmeg tones. Medium to full-bodied, the wine displays a ripe, lush expression that is coated with a delightful mineral tension before displaying elements of bitter dark chocolate, dried sage and dusty purple flowers. Concluding with a long, winding finish, the Cabernet should continue to deliver an elegant, dark-fruited and delightful drinking experience for the next decade and a half. The wine rested for 19 months in French oak barrels, one-third new. Just over 3,000 bottles were produced.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 93+ points “Dark red. Claret-like aromas of raspberry, strawberry, black tea, leather, menthol and minerals; a bit less wild than the 2017 version. Enters the mouth smooth, fine-grained and rather thick, then saturates the palate with red and darker fruits and spices. Substantial dusty tannins call for at least a few years of patience. Not currently showing the sweetness of The Lovers, this wine needs time to express itself and gain in nuance. It would appear to possess the balancing acidity and firm mineral spine to evolve positively. (Tasted June 2021; Published September 2021)”

Cayuse Vineyards Impulsivo Tempranillo Walla Walla Valley 2019 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Grapelive 96 points
“While renowned for his Syrah and Grenache based wines, Cayuse’s Christophe Baron also does some fantastic Bordeaux blends, Cabernet Sauvignons, and this awesome Tempranillo, called the Impulsivo, which is very much in the mold of a great Ribera del Douro, with incredible fruit density and thrilling palate impact. It’s a real head turner, something you’d not want to miss…This 2019 Impulsivo has a seductive inky blue/black and garnet hue in the glass and a sultry dark and smoky nose that leads to a complex array of flavors on the concentrated full bodied pale with blackberry coulis, black cherry, plum and grilled orange fruits that are accented by graphite, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, caramelized fennel, mineral tones and a subtle floral dimension. Think of this wine as an American Pingus! Thick and opulent for sure, but with some nice lift from natural acidity and an earthy and transparent personality, along with a young taut structure and balance that certainly gives the impression that it will age well… These new releases from Cayuse are tight and powerful wines that should be decanted and paired with hearty cuisine, but they also possess a raw beauty and finesse that truly make them so alluring, especially the God Only Knows Grenache, which has a soulful expression, reminding me of Rayas and Sadie Family, and this very sexy Tempranillo that should drink well for decades to come. Cayuse employs all organic and biodynamic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar to make wines influenced by place first and foremost, which has made them incredibly hard to get, but well worth the effort!”

Cayuse Vineyards Impulsivo Tempranillo Walla Walla Valley 2018 750ML ($179.95) $129 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“Showing beautifully, with pure cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as loads of dried flowers, cedar, tobacco, and dried herbs, the 2018 Impulsivo is medium to full-bodied and has a seamless, elegant texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It shows more meaty, almost bloody nuances with time in the glass, and it’s certainly a singular expression of Tempranillo. The tannins are present yet polished and ripe, and it has a great mid-palate as well as the balance and elegance to drink nicely today yet also improve with short-term cellaring and keep for two decades.”

Horsepower Vineyards ‘High Contrast Vineyard’ Syrah Walla Walla Valley  2017 ($219.95) $179 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 96 points
“Showing with a deep ruby core that fades to a purple edge, the 2017 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard explodes from the glass with pronounced smoky aromas that waft with delicate notes of dark chocolate-covered blackberries, then show hints of roasted coffee bean, notions of petrichor, baked earth and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is elegantly powerful, showcasing a balanced chassis of youthful tannins that evolve with the complex nature of the wine. There is a velvety firmness to the mid-palate before moving onto an elongated finish that grows in complexity and amplitude as the expression resonates harmoniously, confirming yet another blockbuster Syrah from the ever-so-talented Christophe Baron. Only 386 cases made.”
Wine Enthusiast 96 points “[#69 TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2020] The aromas explode from the glass, with notes of fire pit, potpourri, black olive, wet stone, dried porcini and stone. The palate is sumptuous, layered, elegant and intensely flavorful, showing abundant savory notes. A lingering black olive and earthy finish caps it off. Best after 2025.”
Jeb Dunnuck 95+ points “The 2017 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard is more wound up and tight, with backward notes of chocolaty black fruits, toasted spice, mulled plums, cured ham, and sweet mulch all developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with plenty of tannins, this is one 2017 that’s going to reward bottle age. Do your best to hide bottles for 4-5 years if possible, and it should see its 20th birthday in fine form. This is certainly for those who like a big dose of funk in their Syrah!”
James Suckling 95 points “Aromas of brambleberries and wet earth with some smoke and green cloves. Full body, round and succulent tannins and a juicy, earthy aftertaste. Savory. Delicious now or hold.”

Cayuse Vineyards God Only Knows Armada Vineyard Grenache Walla Walla Valley 2018 750ML ($199.95) $179 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points
“Gorgeous rose petals, wildflowers, cured meats, wild strawberries, and framboise-like notes emerge from the 2018 Grenache God Only Knows, another ethereal, sensationally complex, nuanced, medium-bodied Grenache that’s as unique and singular as they come. Blossoming with time in the glass, it has ripe, present tannins, a layered, building mouthfeel, and a gorgeous, smoky, meaty finish. It needs 3-5 years in the cellar (it’s far from unapproachable today) to integrate its tannins and structure and will deliver the goods over the following 10-15 years.”
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 96 points “Erupting from the glass with spiced cherry and smoked plum tones, the 2018 Grenache God Only Knows Armada Vineyard offers up notions of dusty roses, red peppercorn and dried potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is balanced with energetic acidity, a spicy, red-fruited expression and fine-grained, succulent tannins. The wine concludes with a dusty essence and a lingering flavor of red pepper skin. The wine rested for 22 months in neutral French demi-muids and foudre. It’s stunningly good, and I have no choice but to finish the glass. Just over 6,200 bottles produced.”
