New Reviews – New Sale Prices

Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2012 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, previously $66, 20 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 95 points “Bright ruby. Explosive red and dark berry scents are complicated by suggestions of fresh flowers, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and rose pastille flavors that put on weight with air. Gentle tannins sneak in slowly and fold smoothly into the wine’s sweet fruit on the strikingly long spicy, floral finish.” JR

Domaine de Ferrand Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2012 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, previously $56, 16 bottles available
Jen Dunnuck – Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape is jaw-dropping good! Made from 92% Grenache and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, aged all in concrete tank, it boasts fabulous notes of truffles, damp earth, wild herbs and both kirsch and darker berry fruit. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and even voluptuous, it covers the mouth with fruit, has sweet tannin and a hard-to-resist personality. Drink this beauty over the coming decade or longer.”

Importer’s note: The Lapostolle Casa tier of wines are young and expressive, bright and vivid, and made to capture the freshness of the fruit. Casa Grand Selection Chardonnay comes from the breezy, coastal Casablanca Valley, which has cool and dry summers, allowing the Chardonnay to ripen slowly and maintain its natural acidity. Hand-harvesting at night enhances the fruitiness and crispness of the grapes, and also helps reduce the use of energy at the winery. Casa Grand Selection Chardonnay is satisfying on its own, and also goes well with many seafood dishes and white meat.

Arriving Mid-December

Claude Dugat

Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($349.95) $319 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin is pure pleasure. Black cherries, plums, cloves, violets and new leather are all woven together in a fabric of notable class. Here it is the wine’s extraordinary textural finesse and overall harmony that take over all of the senses. There is so much to like here, including the wine’s generous, inviting personality. The Charmes has really come on strong over the last year.”

Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2013 750ML ($349.95) $319 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 90-93 points “Bright medium red. Lovely floral perfume lifts aromas of red cherry, raspberry and pepper. Then juicy but youthfully clenched in the mouth; deeper than the Lavaux but today the firm tannins really clamp down on the wine’s saline finish. Dugat described this wine as round, but I find it quite tight in the early going. Does it possess enough mid-palate ripeness to support its spine?”

Produttori del Barbaresco 2011
New Reviews from Antonio Galloni
Wines Arrive February 2016

These are all the only listings in the USA today!

Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($699.95) $619 pre-arrival special (that’s only $51.58/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is one of the most refined wines in this range. Here the fruit shows more distinctly red-toned notes, with plenty of Asili creaminess, silkiness and overall texture, not to mention considerable density. There is plenty of Asili sexiness and radiance, but at the same time, there is also more tannin and overall brightness than I expected. Not that those things are bad. Far from it. I imagine the 2011 will reward readers with many years of exceptional drinking. This is one of the most polished wines in the range of 2011 Riservas. Then again, it’s Asili.” AG
VinopolNote: In Asili, the grapes are from calcium-rich limestone vineyard land. The vineyard produces exceptionally rich and age-worthy wines.

Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($699.95) $619 pre-arrival special (that’s only $51.58/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is another of the highlights in this range from the Produttori. Imagine the precision of Ovello, but with slightly darker fruit and more density and power through the middle. That’s the Montefico. A regal, towering Barbaresco, the Montefico should provide thrilling drinking for the next several decades. A rush of dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco add nuance on the powerful, structured finish.” AG
VinopolNote: The Montefico vineyard produces intensely mineral wines with spicy fruit and exceptional ageing potential from the calcareous limestone.

Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 1.5L ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($599.95) $519 pre-arrival special (that’s only $43.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is one of the least expressive of these wines. Inward, powerful and explosive, the 2011 is not in a mood to show much today, that is pretty clear. Still, there is an obvious energy here that is impossible to miss. A firm spine of tannin gives the wine much of its signature power. Dark red cherry, smoke, pomegranate and scorched earth blossom on the dramatic finish. A wine of real density and gravitas, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano stands out for its pure, unbridled energy and overall intensity.” AG
VinopolNote: The Montestefano vineyard produces a dark, ripe and rich wine with thick texture.

Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($469.95) $419 pre-arrival special (that’s only $34.92/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 90 points “Soft, caressing and voluptuous, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is the sweetest and most open of these 2011 Riservas. Hard candy, wild flowers, mint and sweet spices meld together in a sensual, inviting Barbaresco that will drink nicely pretty much upon release. The 2011 strikes an attractive middle ground of raciness, texture and structure. As such, it will be one of the best early drinkers in this range. This is a gorgeous Muncagota.” AG
VinopolNote: Muncagota has a South-Eastern exposure and produces elegant and floral wines with lingering tannins.

Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 1.5 ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($599.95) $519 pre-arrival special (that’s only $43.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 94+ points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello, from one of the coolest zones in Barbaresco, is superb. Here it is the wine’s precision and energy – both hard to come by in 2011 – that really stand out. Pine, mint, chalk, bright red berries, blood orange and white pepper are some of the signatures in a brilliant, finely-cut Barbaresco that captures the best of both the vintage and this site. Don’t miss it!” AG
VinopolNote: Expect the Ovello wines to be full with rich red fruit.

Produttori del Barbaresco Paje, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Paje, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($599.95) $519 pre-arrival special (that’s only $43.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “One of the highlights in this range, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is also one of the most classic of these 2011 Riservas. Beams of underlying acidity and minerality give the flavors considerable thrust and brightness. Sweet mentholated notes wrap around a core of plush, red-fleshed plum and pomegranate fruit, leading to a brisk, refreshing finish. What is left to say? The 2011 Pajè is absolutely gorgeous. It’s as simple as that. Pajè is one of the cooler micro-climates the Produttori work with, and that was a help in 2011.” AG
VinopolNote: With its South-Western and Western exposure, the Paje vineyard produces complex wines with bright fruit aromas.

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $44 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($519.95) $459 pre-arrival special (that’s only $38.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is sweet, round and sensual. Beautifully layered in the glass, the Pora is absolutely exquisite, with plenty of sweet red cherry, plum, mint and spice notes woven throughout. The Pora is typically the most open of the Produttori’s nine Riservas, as it is once again this year. There is so much to like here.” AG
VinopolNote: Pora vineyard wines are lighter, with rich fruit and earthy notes, and integrates tannin more quickly.

Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 1.5L ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($699.95) $619 pre-arrival special (that’s only $51.58/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is quite backward today, with intense, salivating tannins that cut through the fruit. The trademark Rabajà balsamic flavor profile is there, with notable darkness and plenty of structure that add complexity to a core of crystalline fruit. Energetic and powerful, with searing tannin and exceptional balance, the Rabajà is going to require considerable patience. The only question is how much.” AG
VinopolNote: Wines from the Rabaja vineyard are complex with silky tannins and dark fruit aromas.

Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $44 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($519.95) $459 pre-arrival special (that’s only $38.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is a bit darker and more ample than it usually is, a signature of the year. With time in the glass, the typical soaring floral/spiced Rio Sordo bouquet emerges. Dark, sensual and beautifully expressive, the Rio Sordo is another wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring.”
VinopolNote: The Rio Sordo vineyard produces elegant, lingering wines with silky tannins and medium body.

San Fereolo
The Benchmark for Dogliani

Dogliani lies within a wilder, less trodden pocket of Piedmont. Classically known for their Dolcetto, the region has inherited Barbera and Nebbiolo from its esteemed neighbors. Across a handful of small parcels across Dogliani, the San Fereolo estate has managed to produce wines full of character and depth with little manipulation and great respect for the region.

Located immediately south of Barolo, San Fereolo was acquired by Nicoletta Bocca in 1992. She has since converted the estate to biodynamic (certified by Demeter) and practices a minimalist approach: hand-harvesting grapes to ferment with natural yeasts and no additives. The Dogliani DOCG is home to some of Piedmont’s greatest Dolcetto vineyards, and thus the world’s greatest, and the majority of her 12 acre estate is in the zone. Dolcetto is a long-overlooked varietal, often produced in a fruity, easy-drinking style meant for immediate consumption. Nicoletta takes it more seriously, releasing wines aged for at least 7 years from vines ranging in age from 79-37 years old. The wines are characteristic of the wider Piedmontese style: showing austerity, tannic structure, polish and elegance.

The wines we currently stock by Nicoletta are both her classic, beautiful Dolcettos and her powerful-yet-graceful blends of Barbera and Nebbiolo bottled under the “Austri” name.

San Fereolo Wines Available Here Now

San Fereolo Valdiba, Dolcetto di Dogliani DOCG 2013 750ML ($19.95) $16.60 special, 34 bottles available
Importer note “A youthful expression of the Dogliani DOCG, the ‘Valdiba’ is made all in steel cuve, which shows in the fresh brightness of the wine. Nicoletta considers this to be classical Dolcetto, striking all of the notes one would expect from the variety, with a confident tannic backbone.”

The next best price is $22.01

San Fereolo ‘Il Provinciale’ Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2009 750ML ($37.95) $27 special, 24 bottles available
Importer note “While Dolcetto rules the estate, we are offered a glimpse of how the estate’s style would translate to its northern Barolo neighbor through this wine. Half of the fruit comes of a friend’s prime holding in Serralunga d’Alba while the balance is sourced from an estate parcel is Dogliani. The long 30-day maceration in large vat allows for all of the character of the terroir to present itself, and the result is a wine of power and depth.”

San Fereolo ‘Austri’ Langhe Rosso – Multi-vintage Review
“While much of the Piemonte eagerly pushes the greatest wines to market as soon as they are in bottle, ‘Austri’ is one of two cuvees from San Fereolo that offer a patient alternative. A study in terroir, cepage, and evolution, we were stunned by the beautiful consistency when we first tasted through a vertical of this wine. Generally 95% Barbera and 5% Nebbiolo, this ranks among the greatest expressions of Barbera we have experienced. Nicoletta treats the wine with a high degree of respects, allowing it to evolve through three years of elevage in large, neutral oak, followed by another three to four years in bottle. The current release is the 2007, though we are fortunate to be able to offer a selection of back-vintages as well.”– Importer note

San Fereolo ‘Austri’ Langhe Rosso, Piedmont 2007 750ML ($31.95) $27 special, 19 bottles available

San Fereolo Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore DOCG – Multi-Vintage Review
“The most important wine of the estate. The Dolcetto for the top wine is sourced from parcels found in prime positions as well as the oldest vines of the estate. The seven-year wait from harvest to release reflects the important of the San Fereolo to Nicoletta, who carefully tends the wine through its three years in large barrel before a 3-4 year hibernation in the bottle cellar. Our tasting of each vintage from 2001 to 2008 revealed a consistent vein of dense, warm fruit, which spoke of the Langhe source. Fresh mineral notes, mint, licorice and savory elements permeated each expression, while a lively freshness was alive in every wine, including the 14-year old 2001 vintage. As with the Austri, the 2007 is the current release, and we are pleased to be able to source multiple back vintages.” — Importer Note

Saint Cosme

The Saint Cosme estate is located in the heart of Gigondas in the Southern Rhone. The Chateau at the center of estate was built in the 16th century and is surrounded by 37 acres of old-vine vineyard land. It is no surprise that the vines average an impressive 60 years in age, coming from an estate that was founded in 1490 and saw 14 successive generations of the Barruol family manage it. The estate is in the middle of two geological faults, resulting in a wide variety of soil types. The microclimate is quite cool for the region; grapes are usually harvested later than other estates in the area.

In 1995, Louis Barruol took over from his father, Henri. He takes a very active role in managing the vineyards, personally overseeing pruning, ripening and harvests. From the family-owned vineyards, Barruol produces several Gigondas wines. These wines are powerful and rich with a striking elegance. The Le Poste vineyard surrounds the estate’s chapel and was replanted by Louis’ father Henri in 1963. The vineyard was one the first purchased by the family in 1490 along with the estate. The soil is limestone yellow mall with many fossils. The winemaker writes that this vineyard makes the most feminine and elegant wine of the estate. Le Claux and the Hominis Fides vineyards were first recognized in 1902. Le Claux, planted in 1870, was scheduled to be ripped out in 1914 because the vines no longer produced large yields. The War and several deaths in the family prevented its destruction. The soil is yellow limestone clay and gravel. Now Le Claux is celebrated for its old vines that produce tiny, concentrated yields. It produces the most Burgundian character, with finesse and complexity. The Hominis Fides vineyard is composed of the oldest vines in the estate. It is made of sandy limestone soil that the winemaker believes help contribute to the fine tannins in the Grenache. It is their “most deep and enigmatic wine.”

Chateau de Saint Cosme and Saint Cosme Wines Available Here Now

Saint Cosme Saint-Joseph 2013 750ML ($37.95) $28 special, 21 bottles available
Wine Advocate 88-90 points “A step up over the Crozes, the 2013 St Joseph is a pretty, elegant and finesse-driven effort that has lots of purple fruits, violets and spring-flower nuances, medium-bodied richness and terrific purity of fruit. It should drink well on release and have 7-8 years of longevity.” WA

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2013 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 19 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90-92 points “Deep ruby. Smoky cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by candied violet and cracked pepper; really shows its Syrah component. Spicy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open slowly with air. Very northern Rhône in character, with firm tannins adding grip to a peppery, floral finish.” JR

Saint Cosme Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2011 750ML ($69.95) $51.90 special, 10 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “A wine I missed getting into the first southern Rhone report (Issue 215), the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape showed brilliantly from bottle. Loaded with Provencal character, it has tons of garrigue, licorice, ground pepper and sweet dark fruit, full-bodied richness and a sexy, seamless profile. I don’t think it will be the longest lived Chateauneuf du Pape out there, but it will dish out plenty of pleasure over the coming 7-8 years at least.” WA

Saint Cosme Cote Rotie 2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 7 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92-94 points “(made from whole-cluster serine grown in the Cote Brune and aged in a 50/50 combination of new and one-year-old barriques): Brilliant ruby. Smoke-accented cassis and cherry-cola on the nose, with suave floral and Indian spice nuances adding an exotic touch. Sweet dark berry preserve and violet pastille flavors show very good depth, with a peppery, spicy quality emerging with air. In an elegant style, finishing smooth, sweet and very long.” ST
Wine Spectator 93 points “Energetic, with white pepper and alder notes framing a core of racy red currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Hints of bay and iron line the back end, where everything streamlines together for a lengthy finish. Approachable now, but could expand with cellaring. Best from 2015 through 2025.”

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Hominis Fides 2012 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 points “Offers a dense core of black currant, fig and blackberry paste flavors, showing terrific cut and definition. A bright chalky minerality runs underneath, with pepper, charcoal and bay leaf notes on the sleek finish. Best from 2015 through 2028. 24 cases imported.”WS
Wine Advocate 93-96 points “Despite coming from sandy soils, the 2012 Gigondas Hominis Fides has a masculine, structured and almost burly profile. Underbrush, black raspberry, crushed rock, pepper and black licorice are just some of the notions here, and it hits the palate with full-bodied authority and richness. I expect it will flesh out nicely once in bottle, but it should still warrant 2-3 years in the cellar and have the capacity to keep for 20 years.” WA

Loads of sweet psice runs underneath, accented by juniper, black tea and ganache details. Impressive for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2030.”JM

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Claux 2012 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 points “Probably my favorite of the single vineyard releases (although, truthfully, I find the quality among the three almost indistinguishable), the 2012 Gigondas Le Claux has beautiful minerality to go with notions of black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite and liquid violets. A big, full-bodied Gigondas, it never puts a foot wrong, has building, polished tannin and a blockbuster finish that stays focused. Give it a couple years and enjoy bottles through 2032.” WA
Wine Spectator 95 points “This has a gorgeous beam of pomegranate, red currant and damson plum fruit, coiled tightly for now. A snap of red licorice adds lift before tangy sanguine, iron, pepper and bay leaf notes emerge on the finish. Exhibits terrific cut and length. Best from 2015 through 2025. 72 cases imported.”WS

Wine Spectator 96 points “Packed yet backward, with a wall of roasted alder and juniper notes in front of the core of dense blackberry, black currant and fig compote flavors. Loads of singed bay, dark pepper and leather accents course through the finish, showing a long echo of bitter-sweet cocoa. Best from 2017 through 2027.”JM

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle 2012 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Spectator 94 points “A broad, muscular style, with red and black currant paste flavors, bolstered by a graphite underpinning. Bittersweet cocoa, bay leaf and smoldering tobacco accents lurk in the background, adding extra bass to the finish. This offers loads of grip, but needs time to settle down. Best from 2016 through 2030. 34 cases imported.” WS
Wine Advocate 94 points “One of the more limited production releases, the 2012 Gigondas Cuvee Valbelle (which comes from a blend of terroirs) exhibits fabulous cassis, cocoa dusted meat, dried herbs, soy sauce and Asian spice-box-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, deep, concentrated and structured, it’s a powerhouse of a Gigondas that will have 15+ years of evolution.” WA

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 35 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91-93 points “Brilliant ruby. An expansive, complex bouquet evokes fresh blackberry and boysenberry, lifted by a sexy floral topnote and a hint of incense. Silky, sweet and palate-caressing, with intense black and blue fruit flavors given spine by tangy acidity. This juicy, pure wine finishes with excellent clarity and smooth, building tannins.” JR

2009 Champagne
A Vintage Review

As harvest drew to a close, producers throughout Champagne were giddy. Comparisons were made to ’82, ’89, ’95, ’02 – all fabulous vintages- as the wine press, too, caught up to the excitement. The growing season was close to ideal, albeit some mildew in the earlier months. July and August seemed picture-perfect, with warm days and cool nights, early flowering, and an ahead-of-schedule harvest.

It was a warm, healthy vintage producing average sugars and low acidities. If anything, the wines were a bit powerful upon release, though the drinking public didn’t seem to mind much and the wines have largely since mellowed. In drinking through some of these selections, we’re noticing a touch more body than normal, with beautifully layered aromatics. Below, the eight Champagnes from the 2009 vintage we currently stock:

2009 Champagne Currently Available

Wine Spectator 93 points “Bright and creamy, this firm version is powerful and harmonious, offering a minerally underpinning and flavors of apricot, chalk and biscotti. Spice and citrus peel notes linger on the finish. Disgorged November 2013.”
Wine Advocate 90+ points “From the Côte des Blancs grands crus Cramant, Chouilly and Oger plus the premiers Cuis and Vertus, the 2009 Cuvée Gastronomique 1er Cru Brut opens very clear on the nose indicating fully ripe (partly brown), cooked and also baked apples, ripe pears, butter, some exotic spicy and limey flavors as well as tobacco and brazil nut along with discreet yeasty flavors and a mineral touch. Full-bodied and very rich, this well structured and persistent Champagne develops an intense taste of cooked, brown apples with cinnamon but keeps its citric freshness also in the finish. I sniffed the bouquet for 15 minutes and the bouquet became more and more complex with every single minute. I was also impressed by the long lasting purity and minerality on the palate and this is why I recommend to spend more time with this excellent Champagne and to pour it into a big wine glass.”

Champagne Aubry Le Nombre d’Or Sable Blanc de Blancs Campanae Veteres Vites Brut 2009 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Lemon oil, white flowers, mint and crushed rocks jump from the glass in Aubry’s 2009 Sablé Blanc des Blancs, a blend of Chardonnay, Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau. The bright, focused style will appeal most to readers who enjoy tense, vibrant Champagnes. This is a stellar showing from the Aubry brothers. In particular, I am impressed with the level of freshness here given the warm, radiant vintage” AG

Champagne Aubry ‘Sable’ Premier Cru Rose Brut 2009 750ML ($99.95) $69 special, 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2009 Sablé Rosé Nicolas François Aubry is steely and reserved in this vintage. This is one of the more vibrant, tense 2009 Champagnes readers will come across. Rose petal, cranberry, crushed rocks and mint all jump from the glass. The 2009 Sablé Rosé is another inward Aubry Champagne that needs time in bottle. But it is striking just the same. The 2009 spent 50 months on the lees and was bottled with no dosage.” AG

Larmandier-Bernier Terre de Vertus Blanc de Blancs Non-Dose Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($69.95) $57 special, 15 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Rich and explosive to the core, the 2009 Blanc de Blancs Terre de Vertus races across the palate with tons of depth and power. Dried apricots, honey, wild flowers and anise all blossom in the glass, but the 2009 is first and foremost a wine of structure. A creamy, textured finish rounds things out nicely. The combination of a ripe year and the non-dosage style work beautifully. The Terre de Vertus emerges from the Les Barillers and Les Faucherets lieux-dits. The Terre de Vertus is non-dosé” AG

Champagne Hebrart Special Club Millesime Brut 2009 750ML ($99.95) $69 special, 12 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Greenish yellow. Intense lemon curd and pear aromas are complicated by suggestions of anise, green tea and buttered toast. Vibrant, deep, mineral-laced citrus and orchard fruit flavors pick up a sexy floral quality with aeration. Quite nervy for a hot-year Champagne, finishing sappy, incisive and very long. Disgorged in March, 2014.” JR

Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut 2009 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 33 bottles available
Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut 2009 1.5L ($299.95) $269 special, 1 magnum available
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The flagship 2009 Brut Les Chétillons looks like it will reward readers with a long and broad drinking window of pure pleasure. The warmth of the vintage has given the 2009 Chétillons a bit more mid-palate richness and sweetness than is typical, yet there is plenty of Mesnil drive and precision in the glass. Dense, powerful and explosive, the 2009 hits all the right notes. Best of all, it won’t need years in bottle to come together. Dosage is 4.7 grams/liter. Disgorged: February 2015.”

Pierre Peters Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut Cuvee L’Esprit de 2009 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 11 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The L’Esprit de 2009 is striking. The wine’s body, texture and breadth are all suggestive of a warm, ripe year, there is also plenty of freshness to keep things in balance. Apricot pit, smoke, dried flowers, orange peel, chamomile and honey add nuance through to the huge, resonant finish. This is a terrific showing from the 2009.” AG

Vintage Summary: White Burgundy of 2013

2013 was a difficult year in Burgundy and resulted in a small crop harvested as late as the end of October. The resulting wines from the more meticulous producers were very good, often compared to the 2008 or 2010 vintages. Vignerons describe the white wines as less concentrated than 2012, with refreshing and precise minerality. So long as the yields were kept low, the wines fared well.

Overall, it’s a vintage where many formidable wines were made, where the keenest harvester wins out, and where the true talent and intuition of a winemaker shows. We’ve got a lovely curation of wines displaying some of the best examples of the region for the year.

Clotilde Davenne Domaine Les Temps Perdus Saint-Bris 2013 750ML ($19.95) $16.60 special, 31 bottles available

Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “The 2013 Chablis Vaillons is striking today. Partial vinification in oak gives the Vaillons an added level of textural breadth and raciness that works beautifully here. Yellow stone fruits and spices flesh out in an utterly irresistible, striking wine.” AG

Domaine Jean Collet Montee de Tonnerre, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($31.95) $28 special, 4 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 92 points “(like the Mont de Milieu, this was bottled in February of 2015): Bright yellow. Tangy orange peel and lime zest aromas are enlivened by fresh minerality; clearly the coolest and most classic of these rather exotic 2013s. Still plenty ripe but with real éclat and energy to the juicy citrus and dusty mineral flavors. With its tactile, rising finish, this premier cru transcends the vintage.” ST

Domaine Cameron Bourgogne Tonnerre Sagara 2013 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 12 bottles available
Case-12 Domaine Cameron Bourgogne Tonnerre Sagara 2013 750ML ($249.95) $219 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $18.25/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2013 Bourgogne Tonnerre Sagara has light nectarine, jasmine and almond scents on the nose that is nicely defined, though it does not quite have the edginess of the 2014. The palate is clean and fresh, nicely poised with a slightly resinous texture and attractive blood-orange notes interlacing the finish. Drink this more exotic Sagara over the next 4 to 6 years.” WA

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis 2013 750ML ($31.95) $28 special, 30 bottles available
Wine Advocate 88 points “The 2013 Chablis Villages is a blend of vines up to 60 years old, 90% in vat and 10% in barrel. This came from the latest of three bottling that Thomas Pico makes. It has a clean and precise bouquet with citrus fruit and just a faint touch of white chocolate. The palate is well balanced with a crisp, light opening, simple at first, but offering a light spicy note toward the finish to lend a bit of personality. Returning after 10 minutes, it develops a light marine element on the nose and a touch more weight on the finish.” WA

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Les Beauregards, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 20 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2013 Chablis 1er Cru Beauregard is similar to the Vaillon in that it demands coaxing from the glass. It eventually repays your patience with granite, almond and light hazelnut scents that are very focused. The palate is a little more rounded and fruit-driven than the Vaillon, with subtle hints of orange zest and white pepper, satisfying weight on the back palate with a long saline finish. This is another very fine 2013 from winemaker Thomas Pico.” NM
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 90 points “Pale straw-yellow. A bit more exotic on the nose than the Côtes de Jouan, offering scents of orange oil, yellow peach and spices. Sweeter and fruitier on the palate, with a flavor of orange zest complemented by a trace of honey. More typically 2013 in style than the Côtes de Jouan and richer on the aftertaste.” ST

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Butteaux, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2013 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux is more reserved, earthier on the nose compared directly with the Beauregard and the Vaillons. Touches of chalk and granite begin to emerge with a hint of orange rind in the background. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, more orange zest and dried apricot notes with just a hint of honey toward the finish. There is a fine grip in the mouth with a long and spicy finish. This is all about the steady build to the finish and it constitutes another excellent wine from the finest drummer in Courgis.” NM
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 91 points “Bright, light straw-yellow. Subtle spice and mineral aromas on the lively nose. Rich, saline and dry on the palate, offering a distinctly saline, tactile quality to the flavors of citrus fruits, spices and stone. Lovely texture and mineral-driven persistence here. At once concentrated and energetic, and tightly coiled for the vintage, this wine shows more vineyard than vintage character and should evolve nicely.” ST

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Cote de Jouans, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2013 Chablis Côte de Jouan is matured in barrel for one year (alcoholic and malolactic) and then six months in vat. It has a precise and quite understated bouquet with hints of white truffle filtering through the citric fruit. The palate is well balanced with light pear and citrus notes on the entry, immediately followed by a well-judged citric seam that lends a sense of tension to the finish. For me, this is a distinct level up from the village cru and is well worth hunting down.” NM
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 89 points “Bright pale yellow. Rather austere aromas and flavors of apple skin, menthol, caraway seed and crushed stone. Juicy and nicely delineated, showing firm dusty minerality for the vintage. The apple note carries through on the tactile, brisk finish. Not as rich as the superb 2012 version but quite supple and light on its feet.” ST

Domaine Servin Butteaux, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($34.95) $26 special, 22 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 89-90 points “The 2013 Chablis Butteaux is all about subtlety. Here the citrus flavors take on an attractive sense of oiliness and pure texture, with white flowers, white pepper and mint overtones that add brightness. Today the Butteaux is a bit compact, especially on the finish, but that is a relatively small quibble within the context of the year. Saline notes add complexity to the chalky finish.” AG

Domaine Servin Les Forets, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($31.95) $26 special, 33 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 89-91 points “A round, succulent Chablis, the 2013 Les Forêts is beautifully textured in the glass. Graphite, petrol, slate and white orchard fruit open up nicely. The 2013 looks to be a fairly approachable Forêts with considerable near and medium-term appeal.” AG

Domaine Servin Chablis Premiere Cuvee Les Pargues 2013 750ML ($29.95) $19 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 87-89 points “Servin’s 2013 Chablis Les Pargues presents attractive smoke and slate nuances, along with yellow orchard fruit, mint and spices. There is plenty to admire in this subtle, nicely layered village-level Chablis.” AG

The average price is $24

Domaine Servin Vaillons, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($34.95) $26 special, 6 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “Bright citrus, lemon peel and tangerine notes emerge from the 2013 Chablis Vaillons. One of the more energetic, vibrant 1er Crus at Servin in 2013, the Vaillons stands out for its nuance and crystalline precision.” AG

Domaine Servin Vaucoupin, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($34.95) $26 special, 25 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 89-91 points “(from 48-year-old vines): Bright yellow. Citrus fruits, minerals and flowers on the nose, plus a suggestion of gingery spice. Intensely flavored and nicely deep, with an attractive sugar/acid balance contributing to an overall impression of smoothness. Saline and white pepper qualities add interest to the middle palate. Finishes pliant and long, with firm chalky minerality.” ST

Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Les Vergers, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 23 bottles available
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru les Vergers, which debuted in 2002 and comes from purchased grapes, was taken from tank and will be bottled next February/March. Matured in around 25 to 30% new oak, it has a floral bouquet: hints of white flowers accompanying the citrus fruit dallying with walnut. The palate is lively and citric on the entry with orange zest and Clementine notes, the acidity taut and lending linearity toward the long, shaved ginger-tinged finish. This should be a delight once in bottle.”NM

Case-12 Joseph Drouhin Laforet Bourgogne Chardonnay 2013 750ML ($179.95) $133 special, 3 cases available (that’s only $11.08/bottle!)
“We have a good palette of aromas and flavours. Chablis, in the north, for the freshness and character, the Côte d’Or for finesse and elegance, the Mâconnais to the south for the charm and fruitiness. With this structure, LaForêt is a faithful wine, and we rediscover these traits from year to year”–Winery Notes

Maison Pascal Clement Bourgogne Chardonnay 2013 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 2 bottles available
Winery note “A pure, clear crystalline gold in colour with green highlights; hazelnut notes underlie accents of honey, butter, nuanced with fern, spices and tones of white flowers (hawthorn, acacia) and flint. To the palate, an aromatic wine, fine but not light, full-bodied but not heavy, smooth and firm, dry and tender, rounded and rather intense, little structure but persistent.”

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Les Combes, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 10 bottles available
Wine Advocate 88-90 points “The 2013 Saint Aubin les Combes has another very expressive bouquet with hints of mango and overripe Satsumas combining nicely with the mineral component. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, quite refined, although it just eases off a little prematurely on the tapered finish. Otherwise I envisage this slipping down the throat with ease.” WA

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Les Creots, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 9 bottles available
Wine Advocate 90-92 points “The 2013 Saint Aubin 1er Cru les Creots has very fine mineralité on the nose: flint and wet limestone, almost Puligny-like in style. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, hints of orange zest and lime with a dash of spice to round things off nicely on the finish. It does not quite have the complexity of a top climats, but it is still very well crafted and should offer a decade of drinking pleasure, possibly more.” WA

“A very fresh nose features a pretty mix of apple, citrus, petrol and soft floral hints. There is both good volume and punch to the detailed and delicious flavors that possess only average complexity but very solid persistence. This balanced effort should drink well almost immediately.” Burghound

Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2013 Saint Aubin 1er Cru Champlots has a more austere bouquet compared to Pierre-Yves’s other premier crus: stony, touches of damp moss in an old churchyard. The palate is well balanced with sharp acidity on the entry: sour lemon, hints of apricot with quite an intense saline finish, this is a very well-crafted Saint Aubin that should repay time in the cellar. There’s something enigmatic about this wine.” WA
