Hot Value Wines to Cool You Down This Summer:

ITALY

Pieropan Soave, Veneto, Italy 2022 750ml $18 special, 36+ bottles available
James Suckling 92 Points “Brothers Dario, the oenologist and Andrea, the agronomist, are responsible for more than 70ha of proprietary vineyards across both volcanic and limestone sites, while championing the indigenous varieties, Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. Telltale aromas of white pepper, jasmine and ripe orchard fruit accents. While this is a blend from a litany of sites, each is vinified separately before blending. A fine smoky plume across an effortless, tenacious finish. A delicious, easygoing and highly fidelitous expression of the region.”

Vinopolnote “Can you say mimosa? This low abv (11%) sparkler is the perfect pairing for juice. And as a twist off, it’s easy to tote along on a sneaky picnic!”

Filodivino ‘Serra 46’ Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico, Marche, Italy 2021 750ml $14 special, 30 bottles available
Jeff Porter-Wine Enthusiast 91 Points “This wine is as if you are sitting in a citrus orchard directly on the seaside. The aromas are intense with mandarin, lemongrass and sea salt leaping out of the glass. The palate has a wonderful texture that is mouthfilling yet balanced by the bright acidity. The wine closes on the classic Verdicchio note of balanced almond and another kiss of salinity.”

Arriving Friday

Domaine Pattes Loup.

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis, Burgundy, France 2021 750ml $49 special, 36 bottles available
Importer’s Note “Thomas Pico is a rising star in the appellation and is taking great risks to farm organically in an inhospitable growing climate. The wines are concentrated and opulent, yet racy and intensely saline. Vent d’Anges means wind of the angel. Mise Tardive refers to the wine undergoing a longer elevage with extended lees ageing.”

…also arriving from Thomas Pico:

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis, Burgundy, France 2020 750ml $46 special, 24 bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 90 Points “The 2020 Chablis Vent d’Ange has a light bouquet with lemon verbena, and citrus peel touches, just slightly smudged at first but gaining clarity with aeration. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly reduced entry, fine depth, plenty of extract, and a saline finish. Moderate length. Just a hint of blackcurrant leaf on the finish. Fine.”

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Les Beauregards, Chablis Premier Cru, France 2019 750ml $95 special, 12 bottles available
No reviews for the 2019 vintage. 2017 review provided for reference.
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 Points “The 2017 Chablis Beauregard 1er Cru is a deep, viscous wine built on textural richness and volume. Dried apricot, almond, chamomile, spice, mint and lightly honeyed notes build in a dense, layered Chablis loaded with class and personality. The 2017 is silky, persistent, and exceptionally beautiful with a very saline, delicate finish.”

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Butteaux, Chablis Premier Cru, France 2019 750ml $99 special, 6 bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 91 Points “… It has a very poised, slightly reductive bouquet that takes time to open in the glass. Plenty of energy here, impressive for this vintage. The palate is well-balanced with a good concentration, fine acidity, and again, sporting a subtle reduction that doesn’t impede the hints of lemongrass emerging on the finish. Excellent.”

Thomas Pico Domaine Pattes Loup Vaillons, Chablis Premier Cru, France 2019 750ml $95 special, 12 bottles available
No reviews for the 2019 vintage. 2018 review provided for reference.
Neal Martin-Vinous 91 Points “The 2018 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru, which is Pico’s only cuvée from purchased grapes, is raised in barrel and vat, and bottled a little earlier, after 21 months. It has an attractive bouquet of lemon curd, patisserie and touches of chai tea, the “mineralité” surfacing after 10 minutes in the glass. The rather straightforward palate is well balanced with lime and orange zest on the entry and subtle bitterness developing toward the finish. Very fine.”

Re-Arrival

Faust.

Faust Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, USA 2021 750ml $49 special, 26 bottles available
James Suckling 95 Points “Cabernet’s classic aromas and flavors star in our 2021 Faust Napa Valley. Delicate violet notes lift the dark fruit on the nose, black currant, and briary blackberry layered with pungent forest botanicals, leafy tobacco, graphite, and toasted spice. The velvet of fine-textured tannins backs expressive red fruit flavors on a complex palate, both sweet and savory with mocha and minerality, juicy ripe fruit and freshness.”

Staff Picks: Focus on Oregon

There is no place like home. The Willamette Valley is one of the most diverse agricultural zones in the world, producing hundreds of fruits and vegetables to sustain us throughout the year. For us at Vinopolis it is of course the grapes that are the main attraction… feeding us not just body and soul but also providing our livelihoods. As impossible as it may be to narrow down our favorite Oregon wines and wineries, here’s a small sample the bottles we’ve been enjoying most recently.

Cameron Winery Clos Electrique Blanc, Dundee Hills, USA 2021 750ml $75 special, 19 bottles available
Tracy “Clos Electrique is super-charged… high-toned and crunchy. Thirst quenching like lemonade on a hot day.”

Coe Cellars Mission Hills Sangiovese, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2020 750ml $23.50 special, 31 bottles available
Tracy “Coe Cellars produces just one wine: a 100% Sangiovese Grosso (the specific clone used in Brunello Di Montalcino production) grown exclusively in the Mission Hill Vineyard of Walla Walla and vinified in Portland Oregon. Dedicated to making “as old world of a wine in the New World as possible,” Coe Cellars’ Sangiovese has a ripe cherry profile, with hints of savory dried herbs around the edges, lithe tannins, and a pleasantly tart finish. Blind fold us and we’d swear this is from Tuscany.”

Hundred Suns Own Rooted Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2022 750ml $69 special, 10 bottles available
Tracy “This wine is incredibly special. A blend of three ungrafted vineyards: Bednarik in Tualatin, Noren in Willamette valley, and Koosah in Eola-Amity, this bottle represents a survey of owners Grant and Renee’s favorite vineyards. Bright cherry fruit is the name of the game here. There is also a beautiful backbone of acidic structure here and savory, herbaceous notes… If I had to select just one local wine to impress visitors with, this would be it. Be careful though, this wine is addictive. Just one bottle will be gone before you realize.”

Championship Bottle ‘Lusty Little Crushes’ Red, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $21.90 special, 19 bottles available
Hannah ” …a fun, flavorful, and easy to drink red that should be chilled down and sipped on while enjoying the sun.  Upon opening, notes of red berry fruit and green herbs came across on the nose. Bright and ripe raspberries, cherries, thyme and just a touch of pepper show on the palate. The wine is light in its structure with juicy fruit that is balanced well by the wine’s acidity, and a crisp and dry finish. I highly recommend you pair this wine with some shish kebabs from off the grill!”

Goodfellow Rose of Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Hannah “Here at Vinopolis, we love our Oregon producers, pinot noir, and (in the springtime) Rose!  This bottle by Goodfellow is just that. Made from the pinot noir grape, this wine is an expressive, refreshing, and delicious style of rose at one of the best values in the store for rose, in my humble opinion. In the glass, this rose shows aromatic notes of wild strawberries, nectarines, and ripe orchard fruit. The palate continues to express these rich flavors of juicy strawberries, peaches and apricots, and a touch of red and green apple that helps to boost the acidity. There is well integrated minerality, a slightly oily texture, and a crisp and short finish to make this rose an easy one to drink in the hot sun, or pair with a seafood dish.”

Kelley Fox Albarino, Willamette Valley, USA 2023 750ml $24 special, 32 bottles available
Hannah “This Albarino is made from the Willamette Valley in OR, and to be quite honest, is my preference over most Albarinos I have had tried. On the nose and palate, there is tons of restrained but bright green apple, peaches, white flowers, and just a touch of honey. There is high acidity that is beautifully complimented by a round and slightly full body and weight. The finish is long, but refreshing and dry. This makes a great aperitif and would pair well with a shrimp risotto.”

Kelley Fox Wines Gruner Veltliner, Willamette Valley, USA 2023 750ml $33 special, 22 bottles available
Hannah “This Gruner Veltliner hits all the marks. It has an effervescent and easy nose with citrus fruit and sea salt coming through. On the palate, juicy melon fruit, honey, and grapefruit peel burst in the mouth. The mouthfeel has light zippiness, a full and oily viscosity, and a slight toast on the finish. This wine is complex, resolved, and would pair well with carbonara.”

Mellen Meyer Whistling Ridge North Block Blanc de Noirs Sparkling, Willamette Valley, USA 2017 750ml $53.50 special, 8 bottles available
Hannah “This domestic sparkling wine is coming from Whistling Ridge right here in Oregon! It is 100 percent Pinot Noir, and the red fruit from the Pinot  shows immediately upon opening and gives notes of apples, raisinated fruit, and florals. The bubbles and palate provide fresh and juicy acidity, with notes of red berries, green apples, and vanilla and brioche on the long and resolved finish. Pair with a garden salad and halibut for a fun spring and summer meal!”
