Wine of the Day: Michel Lafarge Bourgogne Rouge 2005 4-5-16

Domaine Michel Lafarge Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Burgundy 2005 750ML ($59.95) Buy Now: $49 special

Lafarge 2005 BurgundyNew releases of old wines feel like a secret you’ve been let in on. I’m not talking about hundred-plus dollar wines buried under a decade of patience – though those can certainly be a treat! – but rather those bottles you walk past in a shop and take a second, third, and fourth glance at. The price seems right but the vintage evokes memories of former selves: poor fashion choices, friends we’ve lost touch with, long-forgotten celebrity scandals and political strife…

The 2005 Bourgogne-level Pinot from Lafarge is nothing short of a postcard from Volnay. Dark fruits mingle with sizzling acidity, a touch of meatiness, and a hint of black tea; there’s a paradoxical blend of freshness with maturity here which is intriguing without being distracting.… Read the rest

Wine of the Day: Philippe Pacalet Les Perrieres 3-27-16

Philippe Pacalet Les Perrieres, Beaune Premier Cru, Burgundy, France 2010 750ML ($99.95) Buy Now: $89 special

Pacalet Les Perrieres BeauneMy jaw basically dropped upon first tasting this wine. I don’t spend as much time with Burgundy as I should, perhaps, but still know when I’m onto something good. The 2010 Perrieres is layered and suave in all the right ways. This one’s recipe includes goji berries with some cherry-tinged roundness, a touch of mint and sage, and a hint of bramble. The finish is unceasing, and I truly don’t know whether you’re better off drinking all of it you can get your hands on ASAP or monitoring its progress through cellaring. Just do what feels right with this guy. – TylerRead the rest

Camille Giroud – September 2015

Burgundy authority Clive Coats has proclaimed Camille Giroud’s David Croix a “genius.” Following a century and a half as a prestigious Burgundy house, the Girouds sold their estate in 2002 to an American group who placed the then 24 year old David in charge of winemaking. Giroud has always been known for wine destined for aging, but Croix, like many of his generation, turns to clarity of terroir above house style. David runs Camille Giroud with a hands-on approach, maintaining the health of the vines and approaching each vintage anew, hoping to encompass the best aspects of each year.

Chevillon Nuits St Georges – Available Here Now

December 2014

While Nuits-Saint-Georges does not officially have any grand cru vineyards, we are convinced that Chevillon is producing wines from the area that are firmly grand cru quality.  The Chevillons have been part of the winemaking history of Nuit St Georges since Symphorien Chevillon began producing in the early 1900s. Several generations of Chevillons worked to build their vineyards, with Robert at the helm until 2003, when he passed the winemaking to his sons Denis and Bertrand. Their land consists of roughly 13 ha in Nuits, mostly Premier Cru, from which they produce a wide selection of single vineyard bottlings each year.  The wines are all made in exactly the same way – only the quantity of new oak may vary between villages and 1er Crus.
