“This is well-packed, offering the vivid plum, boysenberry, cassis and açaí berry fruit profile of the vintage, along with a dark edge of tar, baker’s chocolate and salted licorice that courses underneath. The long finish lets the fruit play out, keeping singed alder and chai spice hints in the background. Smolderingly seductive. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. Casa Emma’s 2019 Gran Selezione:

Today, at the top of the Chianti range, there is a new category: the Gran Selezione. Not only does it undergo longer aging that Chianti Classico Riserva, thirty months, and require a higher minimum percentage of Sangiovese, at 90%, but it also has more stringent quality control requirements. Gran Selezione must be crafted from estate-grown grapes from within the Chianti Classico zone, either a single-vineyard or a reserve selection. Additionally, it must pass a tasting panel performed by the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico against its peers. This example from Casa Emma is in its prime, showing an intensity and energy that will pair nicely with rich stews and hearty grilled offerings.

Casa Emma Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG, Tuscany 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“An intense, fruity style, showing tension between its elegant side and firm, dusty tannins, while raspberry, cherry, red currant, rose hip, mint, pine and mineral flavors ply the space between. The finish is austere, yet this reveals lovely fruit and energy. Best from 2026 through 2045. 800 cases made, 350 cases imported.”

Cavalli’s 2020 Tenuta degli Dei:

Roberto Cavalli, international fashion icon, owns a top-end winery in Tuscany.  Named Tenuta degli Dei (Estate of the Gods), he and his son, the winemaker, aim to make the best possible Super Tuscan style wines out of their beautiful vineyard in the Tuscan hills. As you might expect from someone known for attention to detail and a strong sense of perfectionism, these are immaculately made wines. No expense is spared in their production. The resulting wines are bold, dense and textured. This is a bold, flashy wine that’s an absolute treat—in other words, exactly what you’d expect from Cavalli.

Cavalli Tenuta degli Dei Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points
“The 2020 Tenuta degli Dei is wonderfully poised and vibrant. Cavalli’s blend of (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc) stands out for its precision. The heaviness of some previous years thankfully belongs to the past. Bright acid lift a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and espresso. The 2020 might be the best vintage yet for this wine.”

Cordero di Montezemolo’s 2017 Enrico VI Barolo:

Cordero di Montezemolo, in Barolo, was founded in 1340. We’ll let that sink in for a second. That’s a long time, by any measure, and when you have one family, in the same place, farming the same land, generation after generation, they are bound to become really good at it. That’s very true here. The Montezemolo wines have always been really wonderful, classic examples of Piedmontese wines in their respective categories.

“The 2017 Barolos from Cordero di Montezemolo are terrific.” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous

James Suckling 96 points
“Aromas of ripe berries with dark mushrooms, wet earth and some tar. It’s full-bodied with creamy and chewy tannins that are polished and rather bold, but still held back. The finish is very long and caressing, if a little austere. From organically grown grapes. Needs four or five years to soften. Try in 2025.”

Felsina’s 2018 Fontalloro:

Felsina’s 100% Sangiovese Fontalloro is a Brunello-drinker’s dream, with explosive aromatics and lots of power to back it up. With its rich, velvety texture, enticing aromas, and long, satisfying finish, Fontalloro embodies the perfect marriage of tradition and innovation. The 2018 will reward a long rest in a decanter or a deep slumber in your cellar.

Felsina Berardenga Fontalloro Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $128, that’s $121.60 at 5% off and $115.20 at 10% off, 6 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2018 Fontalloro is bright, floral and full of energy. In most vintages, Fontalloro is quite open, but the 2018 is especially nervy and taut. That won’t be an issue in time, of course, but readers should plan on being patient. Sangiovese is so expressive here. A whole range of floral and savory accents lingers on the close.”

Le Pianelle’s 2016 Bramaterra:

What makes Nebbiolo such an incredible grape also seems to be the reason it is not more famous: its success is tied intimately to the land from which it comes. This captivating grape has been responsible for hundreds of thousands of highly praised wines for centuries.

Its robust structure and alcohol potential, coupled with a high acidity, seems at odds with its almost ethereal feel on the palate and its classic floral aroma. But only exploring it through the lens of Barolo and Barbaresco does a disservice to any true Italian wine aficionado. Explore outside the box with this exotic example from Bramaterra. It is, in the words of Italian wine expert Antonio Galloni, “drop-dead gorgeous.”

Le Pianelle Bramaterra DOC, Piedmont 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $48, that’s $45.60 at 5% off and $43.20 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94-97 points
“The 2016 Bramaterra is drop-dead gorgeous. Utterly captivating in its aromatics and inner sweetness, the 2016 is insanely beautiful. Sweet red cherry, candy, iron, graphite, rose petal and blood orange are some of the many notes that come alive with a bit of aeration. I tasted the 2016 from two core lots, separarely, and then in a hypothetical blend. It is a hugely promising wine.”

Produttori del Barbaresco’s 2019 Pora:

Produttori del Barbaresco is revered for producing classically-styled Barbaresco and Riservas of uncompromising quality and transparency. The vineyard holdings of Produttori have never been more impressive. Total incorporated growers now number 51, and the plots that the cooperative has to work with are the finest in the entire appellation.

Since 1967 the winery has often offered single-vineyard Riserva bottlings from the finest plots in excellent years and these continue to be the gems of the portfolio. Here at Vinopolis we have an incredibly deep inventory of Produttori’s Riservas, many of them aged to perfection and expressing a fineness of character that cannot be yet replicated by younger bottlings. The 2019s should feature heavily in your cellar. It’s a vintage deemed legendary for Piedmont and a benchmark for this old school producer. Check in on its development early with the bottling from Pora (after a healthy decant, of course). Pora is known as the most approachable, with supple tannins and delicious aromatics. Now’s your chance.

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a pretty tightly wound wine, certainly moreso than is typically the case for this Barbaresco, which is often much more engaging in the early going. Dried herbs, tobacco, cedar and earthiness lend notable savory nuance in this decidedly nervy, somber Pora. There’s good fruit intensity and plenty of character that makes me want to revisit this in a few months’ time.”
