Ribeira Sacra

The Spanish winemaking region of Ribeira Sacra is best known for its native red wine grape, Mencía. This grape has the depth and nuance of Pinot Noir or Syrah, especially considering the age of the vines available within this region. Envínate is one of the region’s notable producers. They work with ancient vines, starting at 60-years-old at minimum with single vineyard bottlings going well up from there. These are excellent examples of what this profound and profoundly Spanish grape can do. Much like Terre Nere’s work with indigenous Sicilian grapes, Envínate’s Mencía can give international superstars like Syrah and Pinot Noir a run for their money.

Prinz

This garagiste winemaker, Fred Prinz, originally started his winery in 1991. The critics fell quickly in love, and an invitation to join the legendary VDP consortium of top German wineries followed in 2005. His estate vineyards are farmed organically, with a house style that aims for “minerality, elegance, finesse and ageing ability” that expresses terroir.

With high-elevation holdings in the Rheingau, the winery produces a full range of Riesling’s including an ultra-rare Eiswein. Eiswein is one of the most challenging wines to make and is becoming rarer as climate change advances. This is on account of the time the Riesling grapes must spend on the vine as decreed by German law.

Bartolo Mascarello’s 2021 Barolo

Founded in 1918, second-generation winemaker Maria-Teresa Mascarello now runs Bartolo Mascarello. Aside from the supreme quality of the wines, this estate is notable for its staunch resistance to the modernist influences on Barolo.

Mascarello avoids the small French oak barriques that would impart oak flavors to the wine and they continue to employ the long, traditional maceration period before maturation in large Slavonian oak botti.

Elvio Cogno: Steward of Greatness on Sale Now 9-21-25

On Sale for up to 10% Off!

Azienda Agricola Cogno. Family members walking the vineyards.

Tucked into the rolling hills of Novello, the Elvio Cogno estate stands as one of Barolo’s most revered names—a house that seamlessly weaves deep tradition with a spirit of quiet innovation. Ravera is often considered among the greatest single vineyards in all of Barolo, and why the Cogno family has earned its reputation as its most devoted steward. Trying to describe the wines from this vineyard is a task doomed to do disservice to the wines themselves. You can’t mirror the sensory experience of a world class wine with words, you can only paint a picture of their shadow. The residue of flavor memory that you wish you could experience one again.
